Digital Museum lets visitors explore Yup'ik life in the past with help from local community today

Extraordinary archaeological discoveries from a frozen 16th century Alaskan village on the shores of the Bering Sea can now be viewed online for the first time.

The Nunalleq Digital Museum and Catalogue features some 6,000 everyday objects found over a decade of excavations near Quinhagak in western Alaska, including dolls, ceremonial dance masks, jewellery, cooking utensils and sewing tools.

Meaning ‘the old village’ in Yup’ik, Nunalleq is a site dating from 1570-1675 AD. The permafrost has preserved tens of thousands of rarely seen artefacts from wood and other organic materials, and the collections ranks as one of the largest and best-preserved in the world.

Using artists reconstructions and 3D scans, the new resource brings to life Yup’ik life in the past, as told by the Quinhagak community in the present, with visitors able to cycle through the seasons and discover what village life was like before the Euro-American colonisation of Alaska.

The project is a collaboration between the University of Aberdeen, the 3DVisLab at the University of Dundee and Qanirtuuq Village Corporation in Quinhagak, Alaska. It has been funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

Dr Charlotta Hillerdal, lecturer in Archaeology at the University of Aberdeen, said: “The Digital Museum is the latest step in a long-term relationship between researchers and residents of the Native Alaskan village of Quinhagak who first contacted us in 2009 to carry out a rescue dig after seeing their coastline being washed away due to global warming.

“The physical collection of around 100,000 objects is housed in the village’s Nunalleq museum under the curatorial care of the descendant community but its remote location makes it accessible to only a limited number of visitors.

“This unique digital resource gives worldwide access to these important artefacts, alongside reconstructed scenes of life in the area in the 1600s which integrate the crucial Yup’ik perspective into the archaeological interpretations.”

University takes the main title in Aberdeen Boat Race 2023

The University of Aberdeen has won this year's Aberdeen Boat Race which took place on the River Dee on Saturday (March 11)

The head-to-head between the University of Aberdeen and RGU saw the University win in a time of 8 min 48 sec, crossing the line with a three and a quarter length margin ahead of their rivals.

RGU took the spoils in the shorter-distance second crew race, winning by a quarter of a length in a time of 2 min 43 sec. Meanwhile the University claimed this year’s alumni race by a third of a length, in a time of 8 min 22 sec.

Both universities raced under the theme ‘row it like you own it’ for the 2023 race, the 28th between the two institutions. Running since 1996, it is described as the north-east of Scotland’s answer to the annual Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race and takes place over a 3.5km stretch of the Dee between the Bridge of Dee and the Aberdeen Boat Club.

Both crews train year-round for the race. Each of the 18 rowers take just under 5500 strokes during the race, testing their physical and mental endurance to the limit.

The University’s victory leaves the current overall standings at 20-8 against RGU.

Speaking after the race, Aberdeen University Boat Club (AUBC) Team President Kirstin McCallum said: “‘The race could not have gone better. The University of Aberdeen squad has worked very hard over the past few months so it was great to be rewarded with a great row and a win!”

Bob Newton, Boat Race Secretary and Event Organiser, said: “It was great to see spectators back to the banks of the Dee for this year’s Aberdeen Boat Race, which thanks to everyone involved was yet another memorable event.

“My thanks go to both universities and other partners for their ongoing support, and to the crews for all their efforts this year.”

Scientists have discovered a type of seaweed at new depths for the first time around Antarctica.

Working at Rothera Research Station on Adelaide Island off the southwestern Antarctic Peninsula and by using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) from a small boat the researchers found the red alga Palmaria decipiensat 100m below the surface and collected samples for further examination.

DNA sequencing was then used to confirm the type of seaweed.

Seaweeds are hugely important to marine ecosystems, providing a habitat to a variety of marine organisms like barnacles, snails, sea urchins, crabs and mussels as well as being natural carbon sinks.

Funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and published in journal Polar Biology the research was a collaboration involving the University of Aberdeen, the University of Southampton, the British Antarctic Survey and the University of Thessaly, Volos, Greece.

Professor Frithjof Kuepper of the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Aberdeen said: “We know that carbon capture will be crucial to limiting global warming as we move forward and seaweeds sequester large amounts of CO2.

“Seaweeds have the potential to play a huge role in protecting the environment by storing carbon at the bottom of oceans when they die and reducing ocean acidification. Seaweeds are also an important food source to numerous animals and fish and have been eaten by people in many coastal communities in parts of the world for centuries.

“Seaweeds have been used in a variety of cosmetic and pharmaceutical goods and with carbon-neutralising properties it represents a sustainable product.

“Finding Palmaria decipiensat 100m depth is important for furthering our knowledge of Antarctica, a continent that is so important to understand for addressing the environmental challenges the world faces today.

“Our research aimed to clarify the maximum depths that seaweeds grow at in Antarctica and we used the ROV to look for seaweeds attached to hard substrate, in order to avoid mistaking them for alga which could have drifted down from shallower waters.

“We now know that seaweeds can live at least down to 100m depth in Antarctica. That is quite a lot, but we can’t rule out that they may live even deeper.”

Ben Robinson, British Antarctic Survey and University of Southampton added: “In Antarctica icebergs scour and remove seaweed from the shallows, leading to lots of loose seaweed at depths where it is no longer attached to the seafloor. Due to cold temperatures, it can take many years for these loose seaweeds to even start breaking down, so we could not rely on appearance. Instead we needed to use an ROV to test and collect seaweed to confirm whether they were attached to the seafloor and to confirm a new depth limit for seaweed.”
