Red:

Oh, MOST DEFINITELY uses emoticons the most. He's the type to use the most insane ones like╭( ๐_๐)╮and is not above using OwO unironically. Uses all-caps the most, overall VERY expressive in text.

Definitely the one to have the most typos and uses shorthand a lot, but WILL correct when someone else makes a typing error.

Example - "HEYY GUYS hru?? :D" and "NOOO rEuebn in MCSM DIEDDD (ᗒᗣᗕ)՞"

Orange/TSC:

They're a ghoster in chat/J

Types pretty normally, but also uses shorthand a lot. Only uses punctuation and caps when it REALLY counts. Rarely uses emoticons, and uses tone indicators more. Lazy at typing, lmao

Example - "hey what's up?" and "oh dang, rlly? that sucks/gen"

Yellow:

Everything he types is in perfect grammar, punctuation, and spelling. This, of course, leads to him being a bit of a slow typer.

He almost-never uses shorthand, same goes for emoticons. He uses tone indicators, though! And not above using multiple letters like "Helloooo!"

When he makes a single typo, everyone goes crazy and is quick to joke about it. Always quick to correct any typing mistakes.

Example - "I think you mean *Reuben, @/Red, and wasn't there an option to save him? /genq"

Green:

Green, Mr. Everything-must-be-perfect Green? He tries to NEVER make a typo, and is quite fast at typing. Manages to maintain perfect typing even in a fast pace.

(The same outcome from Yellow happens to him if he makes a typing mistake, but gets clowned on a lot less since he'd definitely make more typos than Yellow ever would)

Similar to Yellow, he tries to maintain perfect everything for typing, but he DOES use emoticons and shorthands! Also drags on some words with extra letters, of course.

Example - "Yeaah, I think so?? But the scene where he turns into a porkchop is hilarious lmaooo" and "Oh heyy @/Blue and @/Purple are both online! Hey, guys <3"

Blue:

Has a typing style similar to Orange’s, but uses caps and emoticons a lot more! Doesn't quite care about typing errors unless it's something important. Nothing much to add to this, to be honest.

Example - "Heyyy! ^^" and "The cutsecene was actually pretty funny ngl, it made teh sad moment less sad tho :P"

Purple:

Their typing style used to be extremely perfect, but as time went on, they stopped caring too much. Of course, they use proper spelling and doesn't use shorthand too often, but they do allow themselves to be imperfect!

They use tone indicators more than shorthand, but they do use stuff like "lmaoo" and "wtf" sometimes!

Example - "Wait tf who's Reuben? /genq" and "@/Red I am so sorry for your loss.."

King Orange/King Mango:

Perfect typing, doesn't even try. Doesn't use emoticons, doesn't use shorthand, doesn't use tone indicators. Uses emojis.

Doesn't understand what "lol" means. His typing style reflects his speaking style.

OKOKOKOKOK so first things first the region/generation IIIIIIIII was introduced into was Gen 6 aka Kalos (yes I am young HAHSWBWHEH) and oh my G O D I have. SOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH NOSTALGIA FOR THAT GEN. I replay X&Y AAAAALLL THE TIME just cuz I love those games S O DAMN MUCH?????? Like the design of the region is so pretty and the Pokémon designed are so unique and the music is so,,,,,, mwuah perfect. Nuzlocke comics also got really big around that time so that’s how I was introduced into Nuzlocking and HOOOOOOOOOO BOYO BOY

I AM A M A S S I V E NUZLOCKER. I LOVE NUZLOCKES SM. THEYRE MY FAVOURITE THINGS EVER if I’m not writing an essay over Luis you can GUARENTEE I’ll be doing a Nuzlocke. I got into them cuz I ADORED the storytelling aspect and all the creative comics but I’ve stuck around cuz I just LOVE the problem solving/mathematics part of them?????? I love all the insane strategies and statistics runners come up with and I can easily just watch multi-hour Nuzlocke runs for days on end

But going back on track kinda but also on the subject of Nuzlockes my absolute FAAAAAAVORITE region/generation is EASILY Gen 4 and Platinum. In 2020 I started my first ever Nuzlocke of Platinum and tk say that singular playthrough impacted my life in a way I can’t even describe would be a MASSIVE understatement. I played it through some REEEEEEEALLY TOUGH TIMES and it was such a consistent constant for me I still go back to that save file and just. Walk around with my Pokémon. And reminisce. It was also just my first ever Pokémon game EVER (if you don’t count Pokémon GO BDBSBSHSH) so I hold it very near and dear to my heart <<<33

My starter was Turtwig and I called him Boba Fett and now Boba Fett the Torterra has stuck with me through every single game I’ve played- I’ve transferred him all the way up to Scarlet & Violet and I love him SO much he unironically means the world to me. Torterras my favourite Pokémon ever I have SO many plushies of it n stuff <<<<<333 if I can find a photo of Boba Fett the Torterra I’ll post it

But I think if I had to nail down my number one favourite Pokémon game EVER right alongside Platinum it would be Legends Arceus. LIKE?????? THE STORY???????????? THE ENVIORMENT????????????? THE MECHANICS??? THE ART STYLE??????? ALL THE LITTLE BACKGROUND NOISES????????? OFS SUCH A GOOD GAME I think right alongside like. Any advice on how to draw backgrounds? Gotten to the point in my art where im semi confident in drawing poses and expressions but backgrounds?? girl help i can only somewhat draw a tree

oh hell yeah i love backgrounds, ive been working on more interiors lately (when not overburdened by sbc work lol) but im assuming you're asking about nature so that's how im going to answer it as okay so: -first of all find yourself a good TEXTURED blending/smudging brush because it will save your life. i use these rock texture brushes from This Studio Ghibli pack, it's $6 and i HIGHLY recommend the whole pack because it's the main one i use for most of my bg foliage/grass ect and i love it dearly

-find references either in irl photos or other artist's work. if using another artist's work watch their speedpaints or look at what you like about their art style and techniques and steal it. im serious. obviously don't trace it and pass it off as something of your own but look at how they do the aspects you struggle with, and try to incorporate that

for me, that struggle is forest foliage because i have a hard time filling out the spaces without everything looking like same colored blobs, so i looked at how my buddy hannah mudshadow does bgs because she's really good at filling out a scene and making it look natural, and i noticed she uses a lot of abstract shapes instead of trying to render every leaf, so rather than doing my base work for bushes/trees with a leaf brush, i use a chunky scatter brush now and it looks really good, and then i can go and add some leaf brushes on top of that for more definition in areas that might catch light ect so that will give it the thick, bushy .. bush look without looking crowded or too shaped

-nature is messy as hell and things are never going to be perfectly shaped and toned unless you're drawing perfectly managed hedges or something. got some dirt brown on your green bush? those are dead leaves now. accidental weird texture on your tree? the bark is gone there, something ate it. bushes and trees have dead branches that just hang out there in them, grass grows long and sometimes a deer or whatever doesn't eat the whole patch so there's long uneven sprigs sticking up. petals fall off flowers. trees have huge webs of branches

-don't try to detail everything. make things further away more abstract and messy to give the illusion of detail. throw a gradient over it for some slight tone variation or something so it;s not completely flat but ppl are going to look at your subject and see the rest of it with the corner of their eyes, so you don;t need to fully render every flower in the field. here's some examples of that

the cactuses in the far BG are just V and Y shapes, the joshua tree in the middle distance is dark with some light blobs right on the edge where the needles would catch light.

this is from 2021 so be nice to me but as the flowers go back in the distance, i stop rendering their petals and start doing blue dots with white dots, and then even further away i just sorta blend blue and green together to give the illusion of a field of flowers.

-i dont know what your style is, but i personally hate using a ton of layers and tend to merge them as i go, but for the most part i draw every panel of SBC bg on the same 1 layer, going back to front (start with sky, mountain, bg grass, foreground grass and cactus, then go back and scatter foliage as necessary) and it keeps my stuff loser and i tend to get less precious about making things look perfect. i also work very fast because i am unironically really lazy at art and am desperate for shortcuts.

-oh yeah one more thing. assuming you draw cats, cats are SOOOOOO small in comparison to literally everything. as warrior artists i think our perspective gets a but confused sometimes (i am certainly guilty of this too!) and there is absolutely nothing wrong with this because sometimes that's just how you have to build your scenes, but it really makes me laugh when i see scenes of like, rusty jumping off his fence to go into the woods, but the fence is only a bit taller than him. so try to remember things are huge and cats are small as hell

na'ni's a huge cat, all things considered but look at her compared to my small aloe plant

or the cedar tree in my front yard.

so yeah. i hope this helps, it's not so much a tutorial because i don't think i'm the best person for tutorials because honestly i dont know much and this is all stuff i've picked up on, like i dont know shit about composition or values or color theory but this is important stuff to keep in mind about the environments themselves. don't worry too hard about colors at first because you can always change it by adjusting your curves n stuff. or slap a filter on that bad boy. or dont. also pay attention to your horizon line because it helps angle the rest of your piece. but look up tutorials for that because i only started learning about it like a week ago

I continue to play Fashion Game!

And the more I play in offline mode, the more range I’m seeing from the men’s fashion, which is unironically great. I’ve got cute pink pants with like, candy appliques! And a vampire coat! I suspect that part of the reason why I haven’t seen them in online as much is that that stuff is rarer by default than the hoodies and oversized pants, so a lot of players haven’t unlocked them (because seriously, you can’t throw a rock in online mode without hitting at least four gothic or sweet lolita dresses, I’m pretty sure the goth stuff at least will do numbers once more people have it, and I HAVE seen quite a few user-designed variants of the Type B sailor shirt.) But also, as implied by that parenthetical, some styles are just more popular in general, and on the menswear side it is definitely that particular cool-casual look with a tendency towards dark colors. Which, hey, is actually a fashion trend and not Stock Photo Model. Given how limited the menswear was in the Style Savvys, it is great to FINALLY see some proper range and willingness to go into subcultures on that side.

A note: Yeah I noticed I refer to the character models as Type A and Type B but the clothes as actively gendered. That’ll likely keep up. For those of you tuning in at home, Type A is the one that has boobs. Hairstyles, makeup, face shape and those details, facial hair, and I think idle poses aren’t locked to frame, which is great. It’s very doable to design a character who’s androgynous, and in fact there are a couple NPCs who are Type B with very feminine haircuts. (I haven’t really seen the same thing with Type A NPCs that I recall - there’s a few with short hair but I think they all wear makeup - but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist.) Unfortunately, the clothes (except hats, glasses, and earrings) ARE locked to frame, and the styles there are more gendered. Even the “cool” clothes for Type A tend to be pretty fitted, for example, and shorts tend to be shorter than their Type B counterparts. There are, of course, no skirts, dresses, or high heels for Type B that I have found, and even the “cute” clothes still read pretty masculine. I’ve yet to encounter leggings for Type A, though there are tights.

And this is pretty unfortunate because there are items on both sides that I’d like to mix and match - I just unlocked a fun color-blocked hoodie for Type A I think would look great on Type B, and I’d like to wear the sailor shirt that’s unlocked for Type B on my Type A character instead of a full-on dress with a hoop skirt. (Also, leggings. I love leggings. I love to wear them under dresses and skirts. Tights just aren’t the same.) Type A characters should be able to wear oversized stuff, and Type B ones should get to wear skirts and dresses. As far as I can tell it should be possible to create two characters whose only difference is frame (though I’m not entirely certain about the body type/height evening out, and haven’t tried naming the characters the same thing,) and I’ve yet to see the NPCs refer to you differently depending on model, but that’s an obviously imperfect solution. It doesn’t allow you to mix styles, it won’t work for players who want to dress one way but still have a frame that matches them, and while you CAN make four characters who share a save and progress, if you wanted them all to be different characters this limits you.

Also, as far as I can tell, to change characters - or change from offline to online mode or vice versa - you have to close the game and start again.

But anyway, I think I’ve gone on enough about both the gender lock (and have now articulated my issues with it beyond principle) and the state of the masculine fashion (SO MUCH IMPROVED.) More under the cut!

First: It is VERY CLEAR this game was designed for online first and foremost, to the point where, if you DON’T have it, I would recommend you skip this one. The fashion’s great, and it’s very PLAYABLE offline, but.

Okay, so let me break down the core gameplay loop. You enter a Cocoon (the little game settings, with the central conceit that this is essentially an MMO of sorts and you are encountering other players’ “Muses” - characters - and becoming an influencer in the game world of Eve. This is why using a different Muse doesn’t change how other NPCs react to you - you’re clearly the same player with a different account.) You encounter other characters and Like their clothes, receiving any items you Like and don’t have. You can then dress them up as you see fit. NPCs will have specific wishes (a particular style, or color, or item,) and Player profiles include spaces to fill out their preferred style, favorite color and print, and an item they want. (You can also pick “anything” for at least two of those.) Making outfits gets you E-Points, both from the customer and in your little social media sidebar. You can use these E-Points in two ways: To buy items for a showcase (essentially a storefront, though clothes are free,) and to make your own pieces using patterns in the design section. You can obtain patterns that don’t use E-Points from gacha machines in each setting, based off the theme - the city at night area full of neon lights and graffiti has “cool” clothes, for example, while the whimsical fantasy world full of giant teddy bears and castles has pop and I believe sweet lolita. You can also get a sense of what setting has which themes in offline mode in the “Pop Up Arena”s each area has, which have boards based on the current trends and one in each setting with clothes popular there specifically that you can like and obtain. (This isn’t NOT the case for online, but again: Some styles are way more popular than others. I saw way more of a mix in the online boards.) I’m pretty sure the pattern items are only available through the gachas.

But you also have designs that you can make unlimitedly, they just cost E-Points even once you’ve unlocked them. These start at like, 500 E-Points for basic items, but increase in rarity as you go, and you unlock more as your design rank and influencer rank go up. The max-rarity stuff costs in the realm of 100,000 E-Points at a time.

This sounds intimidatingly huge, right? Yeah, it’s a lot… If you’re playing in offline mode, anyway. There even a longer play session is probably going to earn you around 30,000. But ONLINE mode scales differently. Someone visiting your showcase in online mode gets you 10,000 points. Liking your items and outfits gets you 20,000 at a time. In other words, I managed to get like 800,000 points in two Online play sessions, so making higher rarity items wasn’t a problem.

There are other differences between the two modes, and reasons to play in either. Offline mode, of course, means you’re encountering the NPCs more. They can unlock things for you as you make them outfits and their friendship levels go up - new hairstyles, photo poses, details like eye shape and color, and even some more patterns for designs. Obviously beneficial. NPCs will still appear in Online Mode, dressed in outfits other players have made for them. But the real highlight of Online Mode is that you can make outfits for other players, and other players can make them for you, and you get to receive those outfits.

Not gonna lie, that part is awesome. I LOVE seeing what other players have dressed my character up in, because there’s clearly a lot of effort that goes into them. Definite highlight of the experience. Players can also send you stamps - “Thanks!” or “Nice!” - and choose to follow you and check in on your showcase whenever. Some of the Style Savvy games had multiplayer experiences, but the only parts you could really do online were a shopfront - where you could buy premade outfits the players had made, which as an aside meant that a lot of players would take the rare late-game items when they found them and put them in the online shop so people could get them way earlier, which was great - and sometimes fashion shows. Being able to get another player as a customer and make an outfit for them was pretty much always limited to Streetpass when it was available.

Which I imagine would be doable if you encounter other people who have played the game, bring their 3DS with them, and have Streetpass enabled. However, I live in North America, which means I don’t think I’ve ever met another Style Savvy player in the flesh. The games by all accounts did quite well in Japan and Europe - there’s a reason why the last two straight up used the EU localization rather than relocalize for North America* - but here, they tanked. I got Streetpasses fairly frequently in the 3DS’s heyday, sure, but for any given game-specific Streetpass function it was a crapshoot and I NEVER got them for Style Savvy.

*Just to list the most noticeable differences, you’d get UK spellings of things like “curb/kerb”, the hair that covers your forehead was referred to as a “fringe” rather than “bangs,” and a character in Trendsetters who reappeared in Fashion Forward who had a different appearance and name between regions used the European version in Fashion Forward, which made it harder to recognize she was intended to be a crossover character in North America. Nothing that seriously impacted gameplay, but since this was the pair of games where you could unlock hair styling, the fringe thing did take a little getting used to. The playerbase was seriously worried we wouldn’t get Fashion Forward in North America AT ALL, and Style Star was released exclusively digitally here, so I don’t think anyone was bothered by getting the EU localization since the alternative was “jailbreak your 3DS” at a time when that required buying a specific game or two to set up.

So yeah. The online multiplayer? Fantastic. Genuinely love it as an experience. But this also means the game’s longevity is directly dependent on there being plenty of people PLAYING in online mode, because if you aren’t getting online Likes, rarer items are prohibitively expensive to produce. There IS a way to get more E-Points… in addition to them, when you design outfits for people you get a few items for unlockables. One is used to buy props for photos, another is of course used for the gacha (my beloathed,) but most commonly, you’ll get tickets for a set of bingo machines in each area.

Genuine question: Does anyone actually enjoy bingo? Like, the traditional version where you get a board of numbers or arbitrary symbols that are pulled out at random? I get that it’s a social gathering thing, but this is single-player bingo. I get that it’s a form of gambling, but even with that in mind I was playing the bingo machines and finding this Skinner Box deeply ineffective. You hit A. A number or symbol comes up. You hit A again. But I’ve also never enjoyed bingo so I may be biased. There are two machines, a 9-square grid with a limited number of cute symbols where I’m pretty sure you’ll always get a hit and need three in a row to win, and a 25-square grid that uses numbers and matches 5. You will not always get a hit on the match-5. There are bonuses for managing to hit double bingo, triple bingo, quadruple bingo (in the match 5,) or for getting it remarkably quick (below 25 turns on the match 5) or remarkably slow (I have… no idea how long it takes to hit slow. I have spent more than fifty in one go to burn the damn things down to reasonable numbers, and still did not get the slow modifier. It is LONG.) It’s a dull and unpleasant sequence, even by the standards of gambling, and I only spend those tickets to get rid of them since they’re way more common than gacha tickets. (Which incidentally I hate, there’s no way to transfer your excess bingo tickets into an unlock item you actually want. I hate that this game has a gacha mechanic but at least that machine lets you spend in groups of 10.)

So yeah, if you don’t have online mode, or if the online player base dies down, you’ll eventually be functionally locked out of a core mechanic except by playing BINGO, because the point costs are balanced towards online. Now, if you just want ro dress people up with the brand items, that’s very doable, but since one of the central things this game was sold on was designing your own stuff, it’s not a great situation to be relying on bingo.

And you know, on the one hand? There are plenty of games that are functionally dependent on multiplayer. Fortnite, for example. Fighting games. The original Starcraft is one of the oldest esports, and it and Starcraft II still have HUGE professional scenes to this day. Hell, a lot of big online action games don’t even HAVE a single player mode, or what they have serves as much as a tutorial/warmup space as anything else. So you know, why NOT do that with a fashion game? Why SHOULDN’T there be more creative community-based games? Super Mario Maker was a hit with the Kaizo/romhack community, and that’s super-niche, but I’ve never worried about ITS longevity. (I’ve also never been particularly interested, granted, since I don’t usually play platformers due to the whole “my particular disabilities make anything harder and more precise than Kirby a challenge” thing. Love watching them, never gonna try them.)

But on the other hand, it is a concern. Inevitably, Nintendo will move on from the Switch and eventually its online servers will go down. That’s unavoidable, and a thing people bring up as a concern about ALL these online-only games and the potential for the experience to be lost. (Hell, as WoW Classic demonstrates, even experiencing a still-running game in an older state is a thing you eventually can’t do as those games inevitably change.) Any given Style Savvy will still be playable through legitimate means once Nintendo closes the 3DS/Wii U online services next year, provided you already own them. (The original DS game is on the Wii U VC.) This isn’t really going to be the case here. Given we are pretty firmly in the “late” stage of the Switch’s lifecycle and everyone knows it, that is a thing to worry about.

More than that, I’m personally concerned about an issue I had with Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer. Like Fashion Dreamer, you had basically unlimited options for designs once you hit a certain point, with just a vague prompt to work towards. And I really liked HHD for a while! But over time, once I had unlocked most of the items, it got pretty same-y - there was no budget or anything, so there was no reason not to use basically the same layouts and items over and over again, and then I eventually just stopped playing because I realized I’d fallen into a rut. In Style Savvy, the shop management aspects serve as a blocker on that - you don’t always have the same items in stock, and you have to manage inventory in every game but Style Star. The real-time aspects of Fashion Forward and the original mean you have to plan around what items you’ll have for certain brands in case you don’t get a good selection of sneakers or Marble Lily isn’t available that day. Customers have budgets that you have to manage around when you’re designing an outfit. They’re limitations, but they’re limitations that keep you from making the same outfit forever, and that extends the game’s longevity. Don’t get me wrong, I’m decently creative in these kinds of games - my Animal Crossing houses may not be the kind of pure spectacle you get from the REALLY fancy people, but I’m still really proud of the island design I settled on for New Horizons because it both has a consistent aesthetic that I like, and was designed for ease of play. (Since I spent most of the two years and change I was regularly playing New Horizons with what I affectionately call the murder tendonitis, doing things like keeping the villagers and shops relatively close together was important so I could play efficiently.) I have fun with the design aspects in this game. But most people aren’t going to play HHD or this indefinitely. The fatigue is a known phenomenon. In HHD, it wasn’t a problem when the uploads to the little Nook Social Media thing slowed down, and it survived the fall of Miiverse - these weren’t essential components of the game, and you could continue unlocking the story mode and furniture on your own. But for an online multiplayer game, that fatigue becomes a very real concern. Now, I’ve yet to see a pattern that I DON’T believe is based off a premade item from the game’s brand. You can dress the NPCs as many times as you want. But again, the designing aspect is balanced towards online play, and it’s a core feature. The point of the game is to “build your fashion brand as an influencer.”

Okay, so, we have the good and the bad, we have the things I find interesting and the things I find concerning. Now for the ugly:

The core loops of dressup and design are fine, and I’m sure people who enjoy photo mode more than I habitually do are having fun there, but they aren’t really integrated together well. The “like clothes - dress up everyone in the area - move onto the next area” loop works fine. “Make clothes, level up your design level, make more clothes” as a loop works fine. But it’s easy to get caught up in one or the other without any great incentive to switch over unless someone wants an item you already have, or you run out of E-Points (and again, the scaling there is intense). I have way more keys and patterns I haven’t used yet than is probably wise, just because I get caught in the dressup loop more often.

And a lot of the game is clunky. Like, mechanically. Your player character moves fairly slowly even at a run. The setting layouts differ by area, and the maps for them all show the same “Main Area with Salon on one side and Pop Up Arena on the other” for fast travel. It’s not particularly intuitive to figure out what’s a dead end and how you get to different spaces and what’s interactable or not. Not helping things is the fact that how the areas relate to each other… doesn’t always make logical sense. Like, I’m pretty sure I can enter one area of the cool setting from both the direct north and direct south of another. I get that this is, like, a VR setting or whatever, but it’s hard to make sense of.

You can fast travel to figure out to get where you need to go, but that’s not really explained - despite a tip text box-heavy tutorial, it doesn’t tell you up front how to travel from one big area to the next when you unlock them, you just have to notice the button prompt at the bottom of the screen to bring up the map and then the second prompt to bring up the list of areas. Not an unforgiveable design crime, but like I said, awkward. The tutorial, in general, just sort of walks you through the bare minimum to open online mode and then drops off entirely - it doesn’t clearly tell you how to do… quite a lot, really, and the UI isn’t the WORST I’ve ever seen but it does feature small white text on a light blue background, sort of things. There are ways to mass-like OUTFITS, and to individually like items from that, but not individual items in the showcases (on racks or display shelves or the like) or from the pop up arena boards. Little things about the UI and menuing experience are just a bit off.

Meanwhile, reaching Platinum Influencer Rank happens at 10,000 followers (these are just sort of gained arbitrarily as you do outfits? They clearly have no relation to real players as you get them in offline mode, and NPCs will have a special event where they decide to follow you as you level up with them, but that doesn’t seem to DO anything.) This is a gate so low that it feels like THAT is the real end of tutorial - it happened unceremoniously in the middle of my third play session or so when I checked my notifications to get E-points, at which point the “Guide Muse” from the tutorial gave a little speech about how you’ve spread and received Likes all over the world and made people happy, and then we went straight into an agonizingly long credits sequence. And like I do not begrudge the devs a credit sequence, I know this is an important thing for them to have on their resumes because studios will ask about it. But usually there’s clear buildup to that point so you know it’s coming, and you’re out of the “this is normal gameplay” mindset. This just drops you in, spends eleven minutes (yeah, I checked) on a very slow sequence through every NPC you’ve met and location you’ve seen (as well as the final big game area, which you unlock after the credits - not that the game tells you this,) and is not particularly visually interesting or, since you will reach it so early, particularly meaningful. And then it boots you back to the title screen.

And frustratingly, while there IS a way to go from category to category for designs, looking at your inventory of clothes and dressing up? Yeah, there is a filter, but only using the search. And the search itself is ONLY to filter out what big category (pants, tops, hats, etc,) you’re looking for - you can’t do subcategories like distinguishing between jackets and cardigans, (it’s been a bit of a pain when the game asks me for a “shirt” and means a specific subclass of items within the tops category) or specific colors, or what items are in which styles. This last one is probably so that you have flexibility, particularly if you get inventive with colors and turn, say, a pair of camouflage leggings into a sort of pink speckling that can fit if people want cute/cool outfits. Makes sense. It also makes it easier for items to belong in multiple categories at once. But I still haven’t necessarily worked out the difference between active, relaxed, and simple, or what specific looks are clumped together under “unique”. (Historically, it could include everything from boho-chic to psychedelic vintage to gothic lolita. In the same game.) I’m pretty sure sweet lolita is considered cute, but I couldn’t tell you right now where pop kei is being listed. I’ve been asked repeatedly now for “neon colors” by NPCs and while I suspect that’s a color palette category, I haven’t unlocked it at all yet and therefore have NO IDEA if anything but the most electric eye-searing green I’ve gotten in a few items counts toward it. The downside of this game being so vibes-based is that a lot of aspects are trial and error - and when you get fewer hearts from NPC outfits, you don’t really know exactly what went wrong. There will be requests for items that are rare or “mega-rare,” but while there are numbers listing each item’s rareness designation, the game does not see fit to tell you when it crosses from standard to rare, or rare to mega-rare. Or if you can use an item at a higher rarity for a lower-rarity request. Not to mention, because the only way to narrow down items by category is the search, scrolling through all the dresses every time to get to outerwear is a massive pain. Instead of making the shoulder buttons the broad categories, they bring up your total inventory, your favorites, and quick suggestions for the specific NPC… based off their default style, I suspect. Having a favorites toggle isn’t a bad idea, but at the expense of not having to load every item of your caps-at-5000 wardrobe that fits the body type you’re working at… mngh. This should be obvious. It IS obvious, because they do it for design. The sub-shoulder buttons (specifically, ZL) is designated for a sorter that allows you to do things by how recently they were acquired (the default, gag me), the category, rarity, and whether or not to prioritize your brand as you search. This is good and excellent, and I feel like either favorites should have been grouped with this or SOMETHING because it’s so irritating not to have a category sort by default and a more detailed search (and the process of searching and removing filters is… oddly unintuitive, in ways I can’t quite explain? Like, there’s something about what buttons it has you pressing at various times that just doesn’t click with me no matter how many times I do it. This happens with a lot of aspects of gameplay, they’re just… mildly awkward.)

Miscellaneous points that are fairly neutral:

* I think at least one NPC’s level progression is bugged for me. Pretty sure it’s a bug because his heart has an exclamation point over it but he KEEPS ASKING for normal requests. I also have what I’m pretty sure is either a glitch or a recurring issue with Marvelous, depending on whether I’m remembering correctly that this is a problem with AWL as well: I play exclusively in undocked mode with joycons detached due to lingering stuff with the murder tendonitis, and every time I boot this game up, it needs a minute to re-recognize the joycons. This may well be a problem only I personally experience because I play in a pretty unusual setup, or maybe there’s something wrong with my Switch or my joycons, but who knows.

* Back on “the character creator is much improved”: Noses are an option you can determine now, where before I think every character got Generic Animation Small Nose’. Nice! The skin tones have a much wider range than Style Star’s “four, and the darkest is Pastel Grayish Taupe for a player character,” which is good because that was downright shameful. The PC had fewer options than NPCs did, and the one we had was so terrible. I am not the person who can tell you how this game handles the lighting or makeup for various skintones (I am white, notably bad at judging lighting in general, and haven’t played much with makeup at all here, and there’s clearly a lot still to unlock,) but it has cleared the EXTREMELY low bar of “being better than Style Star.” Within the A and B body types there’s another range of nine types each that are mostly height, but there is SOME variation in proportions - you’re stuck with your character being thin, unfortunately, but I noticed some of the Type B frames had broader shoulders than the others and there was definitely SOME kind of shift with the Type As but I can’t articulate what. They might have slightly longer torsos in proportion to arms/legs within the same height type? I’m not sure, I’d have to check again with both of my current characters. Again, this is better than the Style Savvy games’ “at maximum, three heights that are the same proportions but taller” by a significant margin. Like with the men’s fashion, still not perfect, but a genuine improvement.

* It appears that the Type A and Type B models have different run cycles - A’s being a bit “floatier” for lack of a better term. It’s not terrible, and I haven’t checked to see if using the same idle animation changes the cycle or anything, but yeah, distinct difference viewed side by side.

* NPC lines are nowhere near as involved as the ones in Style Savvy (where you’d get requests like “I need a red dress so when I spill spaghetti sauce on it, it won’t show!” and “I was watching this superhero show I liked as a kid and I want earrings like the dark antihero girl wears… wait maybe I should wait to do her pose when I get home,”) but they do seem to all be unique NPCs - each one gets a little adjective in front of their name, they have specific-to-them dialogue when you make outfits, and when you get their level up events they’ll have equally specific lines for that. It’s not anything I’d call involved enough to be a storyline, but while the lines are short they are distinct.

14 Going on 24: To All the Girls I've Been Before

Sometimes I still feel like a teenager in my twenties.

Except not really, because I turn 24 in a few days and I find myself in a small town in Sevilla, Spain with my own apartment just a 6-minute walk from the high school I'll be working in for a school year. I'm doing adult things, like going to the local bakery to order a cake for myself and two boxes of pastries to share with the faculty, paying my own bills, cooking all my meals, booking train tickets for the holidays, and reserving a table at a restaurant in full Spanish without panic. My real teenage self had different dreams fed to her by the innate trophy-daughter urge to please her parents: go to law school, find a nice Catholic boy to marry, and stay in the Philippines forever.

You might have seen it on social media, the teenage girl in her twenties meme. It's a revival of everything we've ever loved growing up as girls together. It's a nice thing, this reclamation of girlhood. An attempt to somehow heal our inner children and reminisce on the times when we were only imagining what it would be like to be an adult. The mythical womanhood. A real 13 going on 30 dilemma. I wish we weren't in such a rush to grow up, but that's the irony of it all. As a grown woman, I often wonder about the girl I was, because despite all this I know I will never be her again.

She was ambitious, naive, too nice, but also a little arrogant it intimidated a lot of people with whom she could have been really good friends. I try to think fondly of the girl I was, and I honor her by preserving some of her interests that will never really go away, even now. I remember every young adult series I was ever obsessed with, alongside the sitcoms with each season I had saved on my netbook. I used to make physical mix CDs and now I curate Spotify playlists. I still get a little excited when a One Direction song plays out of the blue. I hear an indie song from years ago, like now as I type this while Cigarette Daydreams by Cage the Elephant is playing, and wish I could hear it for the first time again. I see old Facebook posts made by teenage me and chuckle at her drama. I unironically consume the Twilight Saga media when I feel a little sad, no matter how cringy people make it out to be. I love pink, books, letters, and stickers. I know every High School Musical song by heart. I have a weirdly specific knowledge of R&B and Hip-hop songs inherited from my brothers. I pray the same prayer at night, the one taught by my parents when I still shared a bedroom with them until I was fifteen.

A little confession: sometimes, despite loving the fact that I am wildly independent, I still miss having my mother around; even if it means having the occasional petty fights. Along with the tiny resentments of never fully living up to the image in her head, failing some of the dreams she also had as a girl, and rejecting the projection. I'm the most stubborn person I know, but sometimes I wish I could crawl under her table at her old office as I did so many times before, and cry before taking that nap I so vehemently refused but always took.

I look at old photos of myself as a teen and wish I was kinder to that girl, so I could unlearn the mean things I think about myself on occasion. One night on a casual doomscroll on Twitter, I read something along the lines of us seeing different versions of ourselves over the years and yearning for those times, how we never fully appreciate the current version until they become another face in a photo from years ago. A memory you didn't know you'd create.

I think about the people I had in my life then: friends, mentors, crushes, classmates, crappy boyfriends (ugh), and want to forgive her for the poor life decisions. She was forgiving to a fault after all, but she still makes me so proud when I remember how she learned her boundaries and stuck with them in the most crucial moments. The ones who were meant to stay are still with me to this day, the others who left have also left their mark on this version of me now, in some way. Some people have already arrived and others I'm looking forward to meeting soon. The growing pains feel especially potent as I continue to learn that change is constant and that sometimes who or what I want isn't necessarily good for me. The universe makes it known too often; I have to learn it by heart at some point.

Ultimately, I'd like to think she'd be so proud of me. Maybe, I turned out better than she hoped. I could also be such a stranger to her, a disappointment; her preparation for the real world. I still have a lot of work to do before I'm the adult she would have trusted and aspired to be, but knowing I'm on that path makes me confident that I can handle my problems like a grown-up. Being in my early twenties is to straddle the line between too young and too old, wanting to always do the mature thing, but sometimes still feeling like I'm a kid playing the role of someone who has it together. I don't. I don't think anyone does, really, not even older adults I know with much more interesting stories and problems. I try not to control everything and let things be because sometimes it's the only thing to do. Plans do fail, but somehow, things always work out for the better.

When I think of that transition from being just a girl to an adult with actual consequences, I remember Rory Gilmore crying in front of her grandfather at the end of Gilmore girls season 5; when she realized that she was no longer the golden child she was, but a young adult that might not be good enough for all of her aspirations.

I think about such tender moments of my girlhood, all the times I was teased for being chubby or having curly, unruly hair that earned me nicknames like Lion King or Hagrid. The first time I ever wore eyeliner to a family Christmas party, an uncle commented with such disdain, thinking I was doing it for attention. I'm weirdly familiar with terms like "malandi" or its English variations, even when I was just being friendly. In my first high school relationship, people gossiped about how my then-boyfriend was only with me so he could get higher grades, not for my looks. I know how they talked about a relationship they knew nothing about, completely overlooking how much I was hurt by this boy they adored just because he played some sport. I remember being a teenager, learning what it means to be attracted to another person romantically, and having a relative tell my mom, "Marielle's so into boys, ano?" even when I was single at the time and didn't really care for anything but starting college. There were weird older men who were creeps, and yet somehow I was made out to be some kind of a mastermind that lured them in. I was just a girl.

The beauty and innocence of girlhood are also marred by these moments of misogyny, sadly looking like a rite of passage every girl I know has gone through--one way or another.

At 16, all the pain I felt then felt like the rest of my life. A few days shy of 24, I realize that some pains are just too great that they will always stay, faintly, but life is so ridiculously unpredictable that there is no way we'll live on without incredible moments to show for it.

I look back on the year I just had in disbelief because so much has happened, most of them completely unexpected while others were dreams I worked hard to make my reality. I finished my undergraduate thesis on Filipino food and restaurants in the Filipino-American diaspora and graduated Magna Cum Laude from UP Diliman. I was in love with someone who I thought fit me so perfectly and felt the full aftermath of that heartbreak, lamented the impossibility of long-distance relationships, and believed I'd never do better; only to discover more about myself in the next few months and move on to a more beautiful love I never thought possible. I got into the 61st Silliman University National Writers Workshop, on my first (and could have been last, because I didn't know then when I'd be back in the PH) try, and spent two magical weeks in Dumaguete learning more about writing with the most amazing group of writers I now consider another chosen family.

I also outgrew some close friends. I had to process this unworldly form of devastation by going through all the stages of grief a million times over. I've reflected on what I can do better to nurture my relationships, and grown more appreciative of the unconditional friendships I have that continue to withstand time. I kept learning Spanish for two years and moved to Spain to explore more opportunities. It's been one of the most interesting years of my life so far, the emotions rising and falling like waves that sometimes consumed me whole. I've been through so much in year 23 that I'm both thrilled and horrified for the big 24, a year away from my expected quarter-life crisis.

I've always loved birthdays, by the way, and maybe I'll move on from it the older I get. I always look forward to the sweet messages and spending time with my friends and family. I like welcoming another year as an opportunity for me to try and do better. For this year, though, I don't have solid plans. It's on a Monday and I have classes to teach until 2:30pm. I reserved a cake with flowers all around it and a dedication written in Spanish, something the lady at the bakery wrote for me. I might take a few pictures with my film camera, invite some work colleagues for drinks, and cook Filipino spaghetti the way my mom does it. Maybe I'll call her, think of the ending to the movie, Lady Bird (2017). I could take the bus to the city center or enjoy a nice dinner alone with my Kindle. I might take calls from my friends and cry over their messages, miss everyone a little deeper.

my proposal for tropes we as a fandom should adopt in all fanworks going forward: Duke Thomas edition

So every fandom has tropes and characterization quirks that have been generally accepted into fanon and, like, maybe? they were originally based on some obscure comic panel from the 80s or something but it doesn’t really matter because we’re all just,,, cool with it? Like for example- in the dc comics fandom, an art piece could show 3 of the bats that look virtually identical except one of them is holding a box of cereal so that one is obviously Dick Grayson. . . Y’know?

Anyway, these things usually come up naturally I guess but I’ve been here a while and it’s finally time to put my foot down. It’s high time for Duke Thomas to be more in fanon than “the sane one.” Because he might be the relatively new guy but he is certainly fears no gods or laws of the land just as much as the other bats, lemme tell ya. 

TL;DR here are character quirks (”canon-based” or otherwise) that we should all really latch onto seriously I’m begging y’all to make at least one of these happen-

Duke “Habitually Jumping Out of Moving Vehicles” Thomas

This one’s actually based in canon y’all; Duke did indeed yeet himself out of the back of a cop car and off of a bridge (in We Are... Robin). Normalize Duke’s wearing knee and elbow pads as Signal because jumping out of a car turns out relatively fine once and then suddenly Batman’s rooftop disappearing act seems mellow compared to the amount of times Gordon has whipped his head around to see a now Signal-less backseat. 

Like, he’s going 60 mph?? And he didn’t even hear the door open?? and tHE DOORS ARE STILL LOCKED??

Imagine this leaking into civilian life and Bruce waking up to a blurry photo of Duke mid-escape from a limousine on the front page of the Gotham Gazette.

Duke “Puzzles are my Passion” Thomas

Duke is ~canonically~ very skilled at both solving and concocting riddles (as a child during that time where The Riddler just,,, controlled Gotham, he worked non-stop on riddles, trying to make the perfect one). Please y’all- let Duke solve puzzles. Have the other bats ask him for help after 36 hours straight of brooding over some brainteaser that Duke works out within the half-hour. He texts a picture of the solution scribbled out on loose leaf in the margins of his pre-calc homework because this boy shows his work. 

My guy is a word-cross FIEND. A mind-sweeper speed-runner. That guy who mails into the Gazette to correct a solution in the “fun & games” section and also ps that photo is not of me I am simply a polite young man who is much too busy writing into the paper in the year 2021 to jump out of limos-

I also would love to see this integrated into the type of cases he investigates / runs into on his daytime patrol. Like, obviously the criminal activity is going to dramatically differ before and after sundown, but that doesn’t make Duke’s work any easier or less important. It’s a different skillset; he has to work differently. Instead of jumping into fights, halting mob meetings, saving civilians in dark allies, etc. Duke has to sort through all of the moving pieces before they all converge into something catastrophic. 

It’s a known fact that criminal organizations in Gotham make and execute a lot of behind-the-scenes plans during the day specifically not to run into the bats. And Duke knows and monitors this shit all by himself; his work is crucial to logistics and information gathering for the bats as a whole. Now criminals have like, a 2 hour gap between bat-shifts to try and get stuff done. But Duke would 100% set traps on timers or lead them on this pre-set convoluted goose chase  to distract them until the night bats come out and to let himself enjoy the whole thing playing out on the news while he finishes homework that’s due at midnight.

Duke “I Know a Guy” Thomas

So in going off of the basic concept for the “We Are. . . Robin” run in combination to his general likability, Duke has a lot of friends all around Gotham. Okay, sure, he doesn’t have a Super best friend or a Speedster on speed dial, but he does know this guy who details cars up on West 35th and will tell them all about the new mods on Black Mask’s transport vans if they come through the third floor window and bring takeout. 

Bruce and Tim will be waiting for the facial recognition software to identify at least a partial match off of security cam footage when Duke pulls into the cave, takes one look at the screen, and says “Oh, that’s <insert name, address, abridged life story, and known associates here>.” This also brings in the opportunity for Duke to have some sort of perfect recall for faces, voices, names, etc. which I think could be a really cool element for his position as the batfamily member who has a lot more personal interaction with the people of Gotham.

I’m also into the idea of a lot of people knowing/telling stories about Duke. Not to reference the Chuck Norris meme but almost like the Chuck Norris meme lmao. Think about Jason mentioning his brother to someone and she replies, “Duke Thomas? Like that Duke Thomas? The one who swam across the harbor because he said it’d be faster than the subway and it actually was?” These stories have varying levels of truth to them but Duke will never confirm nor deny when he gets random calls from family members yelling “you dID WHAT”

So those are my top three, and the following is a little speed-round of headcanons :)

Duke has a super expressive face. Like when he’s relaxed around family, you can tell exactly what he’s thinking and how he’s feeling by his visual reactions to things

Duke rotates through picking up new and revisiting old hobbies at a pretty rapid pace. Some hobbies include: bullet journaling, origami, viola, cello, synth, conversational basics in multiple languages, up-cycling and embroidering clothes

Duke has a really fucking adorable smile. He can’t help it. He’ll try to grin sarcastically or smug to be annoying but his smile just cannot be anything other than endearing. He also has a very specific booming laugh that’s an absolute treasure to hear, because it’s the most genuinely happy thing ever. 

Duke unironically enjoys Signal by Twice even though the first time he heard it was after Steph had set it as his morning alarm.

So.

Come and get your food, I guess.

hinata — unironically tries out those diy hacks on facebook. he thinks they're really neat but if it goes wrong, his excuse is that he just wanted to debunk it. like ofc he knew olive oil, in fact, does not get rid of the scratches on your wooden table......

kageyama — tells you to buy fat free milk and then remembers after u get home that it was supposed to be 1% “nothing more, nothing less.”

tsukishima — will go over the lyrics of a song or like a dance ONCE and expects u to get with the program. deadass doesn't understand why u can't keep up

yamaguchi — CONSTANTLY STRESSIN whenever he's in charge of an event like a party. literally sweatin bullets running around the venue to make sure everything is in its place. poor boy can't even enjoy himself bc he has to make sure the night is running smoothly the entire time,,,

daichi — u were chillin in the backseat with noya and tanaka goin stupit goin crazy but u couldn't hear daichi telling u three to chill tf out so he fucking brake checks yall. noya nearly goes flyin while u and tanaka have whiplash.

sugawara — ok this one i know everyone can relate to but he's that person that leaves you in line at the grocery store while he takes his sweet ass time to grab one thing he forgot. u probably end up paying for everything bc he took too long 

oikawa — doesn't care if u don't look good in the pic he will still post it on every social media platform he has bc he thinks he looks amazing rip

kenma — i'm sorey but i think this mf sucks at taking pictures. selfies are ez but like pictures of u? of everyone else? absolute shit. don't get me wrong he's really trying, but he will have like 14 different blurry photos of the same thing and a 3 second video of the ground. refuses to delete them though bc he might need it (he's in denial and embarrassed ok)

kuroo — whenever u guys have fish for dinner he goes out of his way to remove the sharp troublesome bones if there are any before serving it to u. if u do end up choking on a bone that he missed he just tells u to go eat a banana. 

bokuto — was scared when he heard the raiders were coming to town but he didn't know that they're actually a football team

osamu — his food is great, i know, but there are rare nights where he tries to mix it up a little and throw in a little something extra. this time around, it was the seasoning. it smelled great, but the taste was not 100% w u. so u tell him honestly, not in a way to hurt his feelings, but for future reference. will give u an attitude for the rest of the night and tell u to cook ur own food next time. (he still cooked for u the following night)

atsumu — refused to sing at a karaoke party bc he thought it would be rude to steal the spotlight like that oml just say ur shy and GO JJDJKDSK

kita — ur having dinner w the inarizaki boys and chattin w suna and then kita just randomly asks u if u smoke weed. u can't tell if he's asking bc he wants some or if he's asking so he can lecture u about it.

suna — gets upset if you ask if he wants to get food but u aren't paying like why are u offering if it's not gonna be free?? also won't pay if he's the one that invites u out. i mean he does sometimes but uknow.

sakusa — one time he bought the highest strength of zinc supplements since he read that they’re good 4 u. he just wanted to take care of u and gets worked up over keeping the both of u rona free but he didn't know the strength for daily usage is waaay lower than what he got and so u were stuck w a severely upset stomach the whole day. he feels TERRIBLE 

hoshiumi — sings along passionately to his favorite song and talks about how much he genuinely thinks he can replicate the artist's singing style. not a fan if u disagree.

ushijima — i personally like the hc that he has reading glasses, but if he loses them he has his phone held like an arm's length away from his face and types with one finger. also doesn't know how to save pictures so he just screenshots and won't even crop it like ushi pls crop ur memes .

✦ a/n — I’m writing this with the holiday celebrations as a secular thing in mind.

Bruce Wayne

Bruce honestly doesn’t have enough time to set up the manor, but he makes it up to you by actually helping you choose the decorations.

I mean, don’t get me wrong, he’s enthusiastic about it, he’s just busy. And he makes as much time as possible for you and the family.

Bruce enjoys baking for the holidays. I’m sure that’s one of the few activities he enjoyed as a kid when Alfred tried to keep his mind off how sad the holidays would be without his parents.

December is like Gala Time™︎ so the season is hectic for everybody at the manor. Never a dull moment is spent at that house.

And he likes it that way. I think Bruce prefers the erratic nature of having the entire batfamily around him throughout the festivities, it’s a reminder that he isn’t alone even though he feels like it sometimes.

He goes out of his way to get everybody a special gift. Alfred helps, of course, but Bruce takes his time to give his input and think about them.

Dick Grayson

You find out he’s a good singer while decorating the apartment. He starts by whistling and then he’s full-on belting while singing different Christmas songs.

He claims he isn’t a “Christmas guy” but he enjoys the cheer the season brings. He finds it contagious. (He sooooo is a Christmas guy, but don’t tell him I told you.)

Dick’s less impulsive throughout the holidays because he doesn’t want to miss any party or event.

Really indecisive as to what to get his family for Christmas. He low key panics when it’s time to choose Damian’s present.

You will never get Dick Grayson to bake. I’m sorry, but he’s a menace in the kitchen. He also hates measuring ingredients.

Buuuuut, he’ll happily watch you and keep you company. He might take place in decorating cookies. They don’t turn out that pretty, but it’s a blast.

Jason Todd

Setting up the apartment with Jason is really fun. And he can reach anywhere so he does all the hard work.

However, when you get to the Christmas tree it isn’t as fun anymore.

You see, Jason is very protective of the people he loves. He loves you very much. And Christmas trees are a fire hazard.

He’s almost ready to throw out the tree but he can never say no to your puppy eyes. So he agrees. And he turns into a clean freak because “artificial trees collect dust and that makes them a fire hazard.”

I have this headcanon that Jason is a great cook and I also think he’s a great baker. The apartment usually smells amazing, and it smells even better throughout winter.

Don’t tell Alfred, but Jason’s cookies are the best in the world.

Tim Drake

I see him as somebody who’s really into the festive season.

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year,” he says, unironically and with a sweet smile on his face.

Colors everywhere, stockings, mistletoe, ornaments... decorating the apartment takes you a few days because neither of you can decide how much is too much.

Not much of a baker, but he’ll give it a try just to have some festive fun.

He’s an expert at wrapping gifts. Seriously, he does it quickly and without a struggle.

I think everybody from the batfamily enjoys doing charity work around the holidays, but especially Tim.

Damian Wayne

I’m certain Damian didn’t grow up celebrating the holidays to the same level westerners did, and he probably started tolerating them in his late teens.

That being said, he prefers simple decorations. Too much color is headache-inducing and he thinks it doesn’t look good when a pallet isn’t being followed.

Tease him about how colorful Robin’s suit is and he’ll send you the deathliest glare you had ever seen.

Damian takes decorating cookies very seriously. And he’s a really good artist, so as expected, his cookies are gorgeous.

Never take him Christmas shopping, please, the world isn’t ready for that catastrophe. He does all his shopping online and he always knows what to buy for everybody.

Expect a gift that could only be considered as a lot. Damian doesn’t know what a small present is — or if he does, he chooses to ignore the concept.

Duke Thomas

The two of you slow dance surrounded by the Christmas lights when you’re done decorating the apartment.

Movie marathons are a usual thing for you, and they only get more frequent as the holidays approach because there are a lot of holiday movies and he loves most of them.

The entire month, he tries to take a peek into what you buy in case his gift is there. Sweet Duke doesn’t know you bought his gift earlier because of that specific reason.

He tries to get you to spill what you bought for him. Mostly with spontaneous kisses. He makes it reaaaaally hard to keep the secret, but you manage.

He’s a decent cook, but he cannot bake to save his life. He can bake pre-made stuff and even that turns out burnt sometimes.

Look, he’s busy rather often and he can’t remember everything he has to do — that includes that there’s good in the oven. BUT IT’S OKAY, HE’S CUTE, NOBODY’S PERFECT.

Barbara Gordon

Babs gets you matching Christmas sweaters for every occasion. You don’t know where she finds the ugly kind but she manages to get her hands on some atrocious stuff (in a fun way.)

The two of you most likely spend Christmas Eve at her family’s. She’ll be okay with visiting your family too, and will probably try to bring something special to charm your parents.

She’s already charming as she is, but festive!Babs is 100x more charming.

You have a tradition of giving each other awful gifts on Christmas Eve and good gifts on Christmas Day. She switches it one year and it’s chaos.

So. Many. Cute. Photos. Together. Dressed as elves, as Santa, as reindeer; with your Christmas sweaters; on your pajamas; dolled up for a party... you could fill an album with photos exclusively taken on the holiday season.

Christmas Day is for cuddling and eating candy you found on sale.

Stephanie Brown

Picture her in one of your sweaters, stretching her arm to teach the top of the tree so she can do the finishing touches. She’ll refuse your help, but will kiss you as soon as she’s done as a thank you for being helpful.

The two of you host a small holiday party at your apartment and the preparations are the most fun you’ve ever had.

Like finding Christmas markets in Gotham is hard and the city is awful sometimes, but the process is fun and Stephanie’s excitement makes it even better.

And the party is a success. Your friends are there, and your girlfriend is so happy because the apartment feels so much like home that you can be comfortable with hosting parties.

Instead of baking cookies and being a cute couple by smearing royal glass over each other’s faces only to clean each other, you have a gingerbread house competition.

It gets messy, and Steph laughs throughout the whole thing. Nobody wins, but it’s fun, and it isn’t particularly cute, but you wouldn’t have it any other way.

Cassandra Cain

Like Damian, she didn’t grow up celebrating the holidays as westerners do.

Cass isn’t the most open person in the world. She tries, but it’s hard for her sometimes. She makes more efforts around the holiday season. As cliche as it sounds.

If she’s spending the holidays with the batfam, she partakes in the family traditions Bruce has set up for everybody.

If she’s on her own with her S/O, I see her doing chill stuff. The two of you cook your favorite food and watch movies the entire day, perhaps indulge in a bottle of mauled wine or something of sorts.

She’d be okay with going to your family’s Christmas celebration as long as you also get time for yourselves later.

okay so let's start from the most recent one

1. Notebook This one is pretty special because I used one picture of my own photos as a reference. I also really like the mood it gives :)

2. Blindfolded and dog tags I came up with this one out of nowhere and tbh I love it, sadly I haven't been able to recreate the style again. I want to try though.

3. Steve's unread letters pt.2 I made my mom pose as Bucky while I was drawing from Steve's perspective lmao. I also like how it means Bucky was cuddled against Steve's leg while he was on watch. I'm not much of a writer but I find it sort of easy to write from Steve's pov because we're both in love with Bucky :(

4. Look at me Okay just let me swoon about this one because this is legit one of my own stuff that I can 100% unironically say I love. It took a couple if days to finish and I love it. Even if it didn't get many notes, the style and the overall look of it was jsjdhsjhd also, I had it as my phone screen, something that I never do bc I always cringe at my own art and the mistakes I notice 🤣

5. Siberia, 1947 Oh the cursed thought that crossed my mind and made me draw this one in like half an hour. It made me feel so bad for Bucky and all he had to endure before they broke him and how it must have been for him to just wait in hopes Steve would save him, but he never did.

Hello! So sorry this is late! My schedule has been swamped but it is all good now! I do have some 80s-90s hc's for the boys and here they are:

80s

Ponyboy got a portable color camera and used it to take photos of nature and the gang.

Johnny would apply decorative pins to every shirt and jacket he owned.

Ponyboy is a giant Earth, Wind, and Fire fan and loves to pop a tape into his Sony Sports Walkman and roller skate to the funky music.

Ponyboys halloween costumes were those vinyl masks and trash bag-like shirts (Pink Panther and other characters).

Steve wouldn’t shut up about the first moonwalk for many weeks after it premiered at Motown 25.

Darry and Dallas were giant Prince fans (bought 1999 record at launch).

The gang saved up enough money to go to a Michael Jackson concert in Kansas City on February 23, 1988 and loved it.

Ponyboy was a big advocate for the “We Are The World” foundation and bought the 45 for it along with getting a “USA For Africa” shirt.

Steve jokingly subscribed Sodapop to all those cheesy teen magazine services (16, Tiger Beat, Teen Machine, etc.) and Soda thought it was strange that he would get those magazines that promised “HOTTEST BOYS OF THE 80’S! 6 COLOR PIN-UP’S!”

Darry really liked the “Rocky” movies.

Dallas really liked the album "Bad" and the music video for it.

Once, Ponyboy accidentally put copious amounts of Razzle candies on Darry’s tab.

Johnny unironically used “grody”.

Ponyboy and Steve stayed up to watch the premiere of “Beat It” on MTV in March ‘83.

Johnny used Garfield The Cat and Odie The Dog stationary.

The gang was really into the He-Man cartoon and Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Ponyboy would rush to record songs off the radio with his cassette recorder.

90s

When crystal Pepsi was announced, Soda’s nickname for the whole year of 1992 was “Crystal Pepsi” and he was obsessed with both the name and drink.

The boys became fascinated with BMX biking and tried making their own at the junkyard with scrap metal (Steve broke an arm going down a trash pile).

Two-Bit would like the cartoons “Ducktales” and “Darkwing Duck”.

Two-Bit somehow redirected the schools satellite after throwing rocks at it and, instead of the Tulsa weather channel, all the televisions started playing the live OJ chase in 1994 (Two got suspended for 2 weeks).

Dallas was really into timberland boots and Biggie Smalls.

Dallas also got a single diamond piercing in his earlobe (Curly did it for him with a needle and ice cube) and this inflated his ego to the max.

The gang's favorite movie to watch was “The Sandlot”.

Ponyboy, Soda, and Johnny were Sega nerds.

Johnny started to watch “The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air” and dressed like Will (denim overalls with multi-colored and baggy striped shirts).

Steve would try to fight someone if they tried to diss the remixes on Michael Jackson’s “Blood On The Dance Floor” album.

Soda and Ponyboy were total Pokemon nerds when the show started and got the first movie on tape the day it was released.

Dallas would have his video cassette tapes stacked up in his living room simply because it felt “practical” to him to have them all in one place (Johnny pleaded with him to put them in a cardboard box or something of the sorts).

Johnny was the first one in the gang to buy a CD as they all could only afford audio cassette tapes (Motown Greatest Hits CD.)

Dallas started a secret business with Tim of ripping CDs and making cheap copies to sell.

Ponyboy's favorite snack were Dunka-roos (chocolate flavored).

When their local arcade got a Nintendo 64, they all went and played it for hours for several days a week.

Darry would keep a neatly organized bin in the living room of all his recorded tapes of various movies and talk shows (with Steve's copy of the 1993 Oprah interview with Michael Jackson).

Ponyboy and Two-Bit chatted in AOL chat rooms (Two-Bit usually got them kicked.)

Two-Bit refused to pay for music once Napster came onto the scene.

Ponyboy would get frosted tips like Joey Fatone and be made fun of until his hair grew out.

Steve would wear hammer pants and wouldn’t take any lip from anyone about it.

oh god...this is gonna be so long. in an effort to not make this a 300 page dissertation, i’m excluding stuff he only wore in photo shoots and stuff. here we go:

first the red military-style jacket he wore most notably at manchester on the tde tour:

this look is honestly perfect. he is an actual disney prince and it makes me Insane. he looks so good in red, and the gold details are just chef’s kiss. genuinely one of his Peak Looks™️, especially with perfect tde hair before it went full neck curls. does he know i’d die for the one curl in the front? because i would, i really would. if he ever brought this jacket back i would absolutely pass away like WHEN is this man going to climb my tower (😏) and save me from my old ways??

the star shirt my beLOVED:

in either the classic short-sleeved form, or the more rare long-sleeved version with the vest, this look is so SO good. the tight black pants and combat boots were so simple but make me SO weak. and the way the shirt would cling to him when he got sweaty?? and how the nevada necklace perfectly nestled into the unbuttoned collar??? hello 911? yes there is a woman here who has stopped breathing. pls send help ASAP.

the grandpa/carpet vest:

UNIRONICALLY this is one of his Best Looks ever and i do NOT accept criticism thanks!!! if you insult it 3 times i appear in your room and k*ll you instantly. the rolled sleeves of the white shirt underneath?? the tightness of the vest? the soft brown color looks so good on him and the pattern is interesting and fun. if the itm/pm tour turns into flamingo 2.0 in terms of looks i DEMAND he brings this back. 20/10, stunning, talented, amazing, spectacular.

sam’s town decennial suit:

do i even have to say anything about this one? the way his shirt gets soaked (i’m really channeling gemma for this ask, huh?) and is so exposed because of the low-cut vest is SO oppressive. the pinstripes make him look tall and somehow even more USDA Certified Lean™️ it’s so unfair??? this look is so classy, we love a frontman who cares so much about his look.

sparkly valentino jacket:

how fucking gorgeous is the way this jacket sparkles when he moves???? the flames and stars give it a lowkey cowboy vibe, but like. a classy one who has an expansive ranch that he hires other people to take care of as his sips sweet tea from the porch in high-heeled boots. it’s really a tragedy that i’m 99.9% sure he wasn’t allowed to keep it because we really deserved to see this beauty more than once. he looks so good in blue and really needs to wear it more.

letterman jacket:

red is absolutely his color, i will fight you on this. i’m just really so weak for this look, i don’t know what else to say. he looks like the captain of the basketball team and i go to games literally just to watch him. i would let this brandon bully me and shove me into a locker and i would thank him, honestly.

the Gold Suit™️:

how iconic is it that he felt too self-conscious to wear the full outfit during sam’s town but he kept it and absolutely rocked it during ww...king. i also love how his thighs were Too Powerful and he kept busting the seams but it didn’t stop him. literally where would we as a society be without him performing the calling in this outfit??? a true highlight of the tour for sure, i’m very sad at the thought he won’t see it again next tour

this metallic jacket:

he’s only worn it a handful of times which is really a hate crime against me specifically because it’s??? so???? pretty?????? the bluish green color is just chef’s kiss, and i love how shiny it is under the lights. he really doesn’t wear enough jewel tones but he SHOULD because he looks great

and finally, our lord and savior, levitcus:

YES this look is A Lot™️ and shocked me immensely the first time i ever saw it. it really takes your breath away. but i eventually saw the light and realized the true beauty of the long velvet coat paired with the scruff, sunglasses, and weird bead necklace. this was bold and i think began his weird commitment to the aesthetic despite how hot it is when performing.
