What is a UPS?
In layman’s term, an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) is an electrical apparatus that is designed to prevent loss of power which could damage an electrical system. So the UPS provides backup power when the regular power source fails.
What does the UPS protect against?
There are four main problems that can befall your electrical supply which are:
·         Overvoltage – Over-voltage is when the power being supplied is greater than the power required and can cause overheating and damage. Unlike with a power surge, this power is over a sustained period and causes different problems.
·         Power Surges – A sudden increase in power flowing through to your device is typically caused by something like a lightning strike. This leads to a sudden increase in power followed by a drop which causes damage to the electrical equipment.
·         Undervoltage – Also known as a brownout, Under-voltage is what occurs when the power supplied is less than is required. This could be from a sudden demand for power in other areas or a problem with the grid, the lack of flow leads to damage and active data loss.
·         Power Outage – A complete disruption of power, either short or long term. BALIPORTALNEWS.COM, DENPASAR - Demi mendukung kesuksesan penyelenggaraan Konferensi Tingkat Tinggi (KTT) G20 pada 15–16 November mendatang, PT PLN (Persero) terus berjibaku memastikan keamanan dan keandalan pasokan listrik dengan berbagai persiapan. Tak hanya infrastruktur kelistrikan yang terus dipastikan kesiapannya, personil yang akan bertugas pun turut dipersiapkan seoptimal mungkin. Salah satunya melalui kegiatan pelatihan peningkatan kapasitas petugas yang nantinya akan disiagakan selama KTT G20 berlangsung. Sejumlah 51 personil yang terdiri dari pegawai terpilih, diikutsertakan dalam kegiatan pelatihan pengoperasian uninterruptible power supply (UPS) dan unit kabel bergerak (UKB) di Kantor PLN UID Bali, Selasa (13/10/2022). “UPS dan UKB ini akan difungsikan sebagai pasokan cadangan yang menyediakan daya darurat seketika jika daya utama gagal tersedia, oleh karena itu para petugas yang akan mengoperasikannya harus dipastikan kemampuannya,” terang I Made Suamba, Senior Manager Distribusi PT PLN (Persero) UID Bali saat membuka kegiatan pelatihan. PLN menyiapkan peralatan pendukung antara lain 102 unit UPS, 36 UGB, 29 unit unit kabel bergerak (UKB) dan 68 unit Genset sebagai back-up supply pasokan listrik. “Seluruh petigas akan dibekali SOP (Standar Operational Prosedure) yang mewajibkan masing – masing personil menguasainya. Kami berharap rekan–rekan nantinya telah memahami secara detil baik itu sumber tegangan, back-up nya seperti apa, dan lain sebagainya sehingga jika terdapat kejadian khusus dapat segera diatasi melalui analisa dan evaluasi yang cepat dan tepat,” ungkapnya. Ia menekankan pentingnya persiapan mental untuk menghadapi event ini dengan lebih tenang yakni dengan mempersiapkan diri melalui peningkatan pengetahuan, penguasaan SOP, dan selalu berdoa. “Pelajari baik – baik apa yang akan disampaikan hari ini sehingga saat hari H nantinya, rekan – rekan akan percaya diri dan cepat dalam pengambilan keputusan,” tutup Suamba. Kesiapan PLN dalam menjamin keandalan pasokan listrik untuk KTT G20 telah mencapai 98 persen. Keseluruhan 123 program aksi yang dicanangkan antara lain terbagi dalam pengamanan pasokan kelistrikan pada operasi sistem, pembangkitan, transmisi, distribusi penyediaan stasiun pengisian kendaraan listrik umum, dan beautifikasi yakni perapian berbagai jaringan listrik serta showcase energi baru terbarukan. Diharapkan seluruh proses baik sisi pasokan sumber energi dari pembangkit maupun operasional pembangkit, termasuk transmisi dan gardu induk melalui peremajaan aset dan lapis proteksi juga beautifikasi distribusi dan sarana pendukung lainnya dapat segera selesai sesuai dengan target yang diharapkan.(bpn) Read the full article
