I’m betting he jumped from the board behind him and the shutter snapped just at the instant of his toes hitting the water.
HOWEVER I wonder if that water’s as warm as it looks, because I wore a very similar expression at the instant of entering my school’s swimming pool for the first time ever, aged about 12...
*****
It was early September, the first week of the Autumn term, and the weather was hot enough that our sports master announced First Form would be allowed into the pool after class.
However, what he probably - and we certainly - didn't know was that the pool wasn’t scheduled for full use until next week. The engineer hadn’t turned the heating system on yet, and a few days of mere sunny weather had no effect on that much indoor water, left unheated since the end of June.
Unaware little me made A Great Bound poolwards and, as my feet hit, my nervous system had just enough time to go ARGH THIS IS FREEZING! before I was in over my head.
Literally, because I’d jumped into the 9-foot deep end.
My mate Wally said later that I'd done my best to bounce off the surface, and even then I rebounded from the bottom and out of the water more like a sub-launched missile than a schoolboy, already one giant goosebump from head to heels.
The only thing warming me even slightly was the glow of embarrassment at the way the way the rest of the class - even my mate Wally - was laughing.
Bastards.
I'd been the one babbling about the pool all afternoon, I'd been the keenest to get into it, and while they’d noticed a certain chill in the air and held back, not one of them bothered to tell eager little me since watching what happened would be far more amusing.
Bastards...
Moral: if everyone is in their swimsuits but nobody's in the pool, there may be - from shark-bite to frostbite - a very good reason why not.
*****
Adding insult to chill-shrunken injury, come the very next week when the heating went on officially, the engineer's assistant mis-set its thermostat and on that first Proper Swimming Lesson day the pool was almost as hot as a bathtub.
Outside, the weather had shifted to cold, so amazing clouds of steam rolled out through the doors and hung over the surface, and the only things missing about being in the water were some rubber ducks, a couple of sponges, a loofah and a few toy boats.
But since it was a Proper Swimming Lesson, we had to do 20 lengths instead.
Sometimes you just can't win...

This morning I went on field research for writing
In my town there is an unheated outdoor swimming pool that is open year-round. Indeed, as @frodothefair said in her comment, winter bathing is a tradition in many Nordic countries: the place was packed!!!
Today the water was 6.7°C (or 44°F for you heathens) and the air was a misty 4°C (39°F).
So... I should definitely have gone there before writing the ice bathing scene in Cold hands, warm heart! But it wasn't my very first experience bathing in "fresh" conditions, although it was my coldest ever by a couple degrees at least. I'm happy to say that the experience mostly fit what I pictured as I was writing!
A few extra impressions:
Before and after bathing, the worst is the feet. Even scantily clad, the air is not that bad, if you've moved a bit before. But the FEET, in contact with cold water on the hard ground, are in pain. It would be excruciating in the snow! Next time I must bring water shoes.
It's really interesting to experience a culture where nudity is really no big deal! Everyone naked in the changing rooms, bare butts all around in the communal showers! My partner who is from a very private culture was shocked and amused. Like a Grimbold at the Aldburg swim hole! 😅🍑
The main way I could convince myself to jump in and stay in at first was to repeat "I am Éowyn, I am Éowyn, I am Éowyn!" Whatever works, I guess!
The main reaction of my body in the water and immediately out was not shivering, but hyperventilating and panting heavily. I had to work hard to calm my breathing! I was thinking of an ex of mine who was really into the Wim Hof method... But I'm not sure I would recommend it without medical supervision.
I was able to wade perhaps 20 meters, and after about 45 seconds I felt like I needed to get out. But as soon as I was wrapped in my towel, I felt much better, and I wanted to go back again. I went around the pool once more, maybe 30 meters, and this time was almost comfortable. Nonetheless I was glad for the warm shower waiting for me! But it was nowhere, NOWHERE as bad as I would have expected.
My partner was NOT able to stay that long in the water. He was in and out, and then he wanted to go back in because he saw me swim and his ego couldn't leave it at that. His second try was not much more successful. 🤭
This is something I've observed many times: guys are quick to go in, but can't stand it long, whereas women are more affected by the initial shock (it HURTS, okay), but then are able to stay for a good while longer. And this is why I wrote Éowyn taking her time and toughing it out, but surfer-bro Éomer jumping in and running out swearing!
To be fair, men tend to have less body fat than women. I'm indeed a little softer around the edges than my partner. When I was in Mexico, this earned me the nickname of "beluga" amongst marine biologists, because I cannot tan, and I could withstand frigid waters (frigid to them, we're talking 22°C/72°F).
Overall it was FUN! The feeling of euphoria is real! I'd definitely do it again, especially that it's a 2km run from where I live, which is perfect to get warmed up before and after. A new winter tradition for me!
Okay, I'm off to make hokshoklet!

I'm not even gonna try to get in the game till tonight tbh. I learned my lesson:
Once upon a time my IRL fireteam and I (my partner and our friend who lives a few states over) organised a LAN party with Special Chemical Treats for our first DLC drop (beyond light) and we popped em at reset & couldn't play till the wee hours so we just. rode out most of the trip by engaging in edifying meatspace activities like Getting In The Very Unheated Pool At Thev Exact Same Time That A Cold Front Moved In As A Storm (it had been positively Scorching before), and also Strawberry Mint Mojito Concoctions.
The first metaphorical faceful of windswept snow and the fuckign plural voice of the Witness and the first taste of a new subclass and the fuckign beautiful ass environments at midnight did feel pretty nuts in that state tho
#also i'm not. bougie. our rental at the time had a pool that we only managed to keep clean for like 2 weeks out of the year we spent there#it was a POPULATED swamp the rest of the time. we had dragonflies hatching and swimming about in their nymph stage in there#and 4 of us could only afford the rental bc it was half-built in a lot of places. like it didn't have guard rails on the balconies#so they couldn't rent to anyone with kids or with low physical stats lmao#viitalks#about destiny#the final shape#we had another reunion for witch queen and then lightfall but couldn't pull it off this year :<

𝐓𝐀𝐒𝐊 𝟎𝟎𝟑 — 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮𝘦
it is 𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐂𝐇 𝟐𝟑𝐑𝐃 , 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑 , , , and the alpha delta phis are hosting their largest party of the semester . naturally , it is themed in a way that encourages the least amount of clothes possible despite the crisp spring seattle air . though the brother's would argue that nothing screams SPRING BREAK quite like low fifty degree whether , an unheated pool , copious amounts of booze , and any kind of drug , or partner , a person could think of experimenting with .
the hardest part of going to a party is deciding what to wear . what to bring . who to go with . do you keep your ID in the back of the phone or do you bother with a bag or wallet ?? is there a motivation behind your attendance or is it a bad case of fomo ?? maybe you're just looking to party , or maybe there's a goal ; get drunk , get laid , experience greek life with the fraternity on campus that practically invented the term . . . whatever your reasons for going are ; you'll need something to wear .
for this task , we are wanting to see what everyone's muses are gonna be wearing to this fun lil shindig in the year of 2023 .. keep in mind the theme for the party is SPRING BREAKERS - think the awful 2012 movie .
you do not have to limit this task to what they're wearing ; who are they going with ?? what's their fave frat party bev of choice ?? how do they feel about going ?? anything you want to add in to this fun and light hearted task ( no fine print here , we promise ) - we encourage you to do so !!
can't wait to see how slutty , hot , and mouthwatering everyone looks what everyone is wearing : ) x you know where to find us if you have any questions !!

Hi, different anon than the trans-ask anon, but I got curious bc I saw their ask and I don't often see a lot of wump that focuses on the fact that a character is trans - probably bc the author doesn't want to risk getting blasted for transphobia, which is totally understandable - rather than just having a character who happens to be trans (I'm a transman btw)
Anyway you can delete this one if it's outside your comfort zone, but how do you think Mason would react if he saw a pet showing genuine signs of distress or dysphoria over being treated or perceived as their assigned gender? For example, if the pet was visibly uncomfortable with being put in form-fitting or revealing clothing (that was coded for their assigned gender or otherwise made their abg obvious), or developed eating disorders and or other unheated habits bc of it?
TW: Transphobia (but only for pets? He's a strange dude)
Yeah, I'm sure that's a topic that requires a lot of care the thought. Either way it's def out of my experience pool.
Honestly Mason would be super confused. If someone else was telling him second hand about it he probably wouldn't believe them, but if he was experiencing it first hand with a pet he cared about? Very confused. He might reach out to other trainers and see if they had heard of it before.
He's infantilized and belittled pets for so long, the concept that they could be feeling and expressing like that would be just bonkers to him.
Sadly in the end he would be more likely to chalk it up to anxiety and copying behavior from humans rather than confront his delusion that 'pet's aren't real humans." :/
#tw transphobia#mason is good at his job#i mean not in this case but that is his tag 😬#he's such a weird one because he respects trans HUMANS#but can't accept Pets are human#which makes him such a horrible person.... but only to pets?#delusional is really the only correct word

tbh i'm also really curious about what all your answers might be to all those questions in the ask game if that's okay with you 😆 you have a very interesting and nice perspective (as i also see in your writing) that i am curious and want to know about your thoughts through those asks if that's fine :) (you don't have to if you think it's too much!)
this is SO SWEET!! i don't mind answering them at all!!! i'll try and do most of them, but im gonna pick my fav questions from the list <33 and ill put them below the cut. im so flattered actually that u wanna hear my answers to them what if i blushed...
What did you dream about last night?
OH FUCK i forgot i had this dream until i got halfway through the questions but last night i had a dream that i was at work but i was falling asleep during it. like could not keep my eyes open,.. and my manager messaged me on teams and she was like "we can see you doing nothing" but for some reason i just could not wake myself up. and then when i DID wake myself up in the dream i was like "bro something is wrong why does it feel like im still asleep. wake up!" and then i woke up and realized i was just dreaming. it scared me 😭
What is your favorite color?
i like yellow and orange!!!! but lately i have been on a bit of a light blue kick since this summer!!
Do you feel more connected to the moon or the sun?
this one is cute!! i think i feel more connected to the sun. i'm more comfortable during the day and tend to be in a better mood. plus i really like the way it feels on my skin <3
Have you ever wished on a shooting star?
a few times!!! i've seen some on the rare occasion i went camping, but i never really remember my wish long enough to know if it came true or not lol
What do you enjoy daydreaming about most?
god this is going to sound so corny but lately my fav daydream has been imagining that im winning my first emmy for an animated tv show. idk i just imagine the way it would feel to have my work and dreams recognized, getting to thank my parents and team and shit. corny corny i know but i love imagining it.
Do you believe in guardian angels?
i do, but in a nonreligious way! i won't go too deep into it, but i've had many dreams / experiences that preceded major life events that i can't explain otherwise. even without it, it's nice to think that there is something out there looking out for us. kinda like the universe has us in mind.
What is something (or someone) you’re in love with?
this one is hard!! i haven't been in romantic love with a person ever i don't think (mutually at least), but i am in love with my friends. i really truly believe i met them for a reason and i think i'm the luckiest person because they're in my life. i have so much love for them that i genuinely don't know what to do with it. my other love... and i say it so frequently... is writing and storytelling. it's the greatest love of my life, i know it.
What’s your ideal summer aesthetic?
linen clothes and dresses and flowy shorts and humidity and laying on the floor outside. unheated swimming pools, music from a speaker or the tv, friends laying out on towels. exploring cities and sweating and driving to the beach on a whim and sitting on the porch eating lunch. roadtrips along the coast with the windows down. yeah <3
Talk about something exciting or good that happened to you this year.
maybe not this year, but this summer, i spent a month traveling japan with one of my best friends.
Where do you feel most at home?
with my friends!!! always always always with my friends
What is something you own that is important to you? What makes it so important?
writing and creating things and making art!! i genuinely can't stop myself from doing it. i write and make things with the same urgency and feeling as eating or drinking water. i do it before i sleep and when i wake up and even just in my head constantly. it's corny, but it's a part of me and i genuinely can't live without it.
Do you believe dreams have meanings or are they completely random?
i've had some WILD dreams that absolutely have meaning. some of my dreams are totally random, but i think a lot of them are symbolic of things or feelings i'm experiencing. i had one that was so long and frightening and weirdly poetic that there's no way it couldn't have meant something. haven't quite figured it out yet tho LOL
Do you believe in love at first sight?
nope! i've definitely written about love at first sight, but i think that to really LOVE someone, you have to know them. that's one of the best parts about love.
What’s the sweetest thing someone has done for you?
i've spoken about it before but when my dad had a brain bleed in may and was rushed for emergency surgery, my friends (and housemates at the time) emailed all of my professors for me, packed a lunch, packed my car with blankets and tissues, sat with me while i packed a bag with clothes, and drove me six hours one way so that i could be at home with my family. he ended up going into surgery while i was on the drive back home and the housemate driving me held my hand for hours while i waited for news that he was out. i'd never felt more held and loved than i did then and they are some of the kindest things anyone has ever done for me to this day.
What’s your zodiac sign? Do you think you fit the general characteristics of that sign?
i'm a taurus (with a leo moon and leo rising)!! and i absolutely think i fit the characteristics LOL
Are you more of a hopeless romantic or realist?
mmmm i'm not sure! i'd say hopeless romantic if i had to pick one, but not to the point that i don't know how the real world works. i don't like big gestures though, so im not sure if maybe that disqualifies me LOL. i just like the idea of eventually being known and loved for it.
What’s a song that gives off good vibes anytime you listen to it?
hold in, hold on by kid bloom!!!
Have you ever written a love letter?
nope!!!
Name a book you don’t mind reading over and over.
heaven by mieko kawakami. i could read it 800 times and never be sick of it. the lilith's brood trilogy is a close second, though i've only read it once so we'll have to test it. but i LOVE that series.
What do you do to feel at peace?
i write or draw!!! that's typically my first instinct when i need some quiet or some callie time. i feel very calm when i create.
#cal care package#i exlcuded a few questions but i think i answered most of them!!!!#thanks for asking anon!! im really glad you did !!#it was fun to answer these#ask games

Oooh! Okay, so. Funny story.
It's April 2020. I'm getting more and more concerned about public and semi-private pools being shut down long term. This is a huge problem because my brother has severe physical disabilities and aqua aerobics are literally his ONLY option for significant cardio activity, so. The closures for the pandemic, while protecting everyone ELSE, could mean a huge health problem for him. I've been calling and lobbying the city to open up the pools on a severely limited capacity basis, and am getting nowhere. All the semi-private pools I call have shut down for the duration.
In desperation, I turn to Facebook and start looking for anyone with a connection to a private pool. I don't have a lot of hope, because I'm in Colorado, and most people with a private pool have an outdoors/unheated pool, which means they won't open up for another two months or so.
One of my wife's cousins down in Austin suggests that I look into swimply, which is apparently a new startup doing air bnb but for pools. I download the app and enter in my zipcode, and there's one pool within 100 miles. It's about 20 miles away, in fact, which is certainly not ideal, but I'll definitely take it over no pool at all. I contact that owner, and they're very willing to rent it out to me three times a week, for like $15/hour but with a three-hour minimum, which is, again, not optimal, but look. My bro can't just go months without any exercise, either.
So, in May 2020, we start renting this private pool out three times a week. It's out in the guy's backyard, no wheelchair lift obviously but it's doable for me and my brother's aide to get him in and out manually. This is still deep social distancing/masking time, so of course the owner doesn't come out to meet us or anything, but we have a few shouted conversations with him on his porch and us in the pool. We leave cash under a rock on the porch. He lets us use his pool noodles and patio chairs/umbrellas. It's all workable.
And then about two months into this endeavor, some rando (not wearing a mask) comes up to my van as I'm getting ready to drive away, having just loaded my brother up. He motions for me to roll down my window. Hesitant (he's not wearing a mask), but thinking that he's gonna tell me that like, my headlight is out or I just dropped my wallet in the street or something, I adjust my mask pointedly and do so. (Keep in mind that I have audio processing issues for the following)
Him: Hey, I'm (unintelligible), a (unintelligible) from Fox 31 News, and I'm (unintelligible), were you just renting a pool from Bob (unintelligible)?
Me (having no idea what's going on. Did he say he was a reporter?): Uh. Yeah?
Him: Okay, how did you find him? Does he charge a lot?"
Me (okay, maybe I misheard and he just wants to rent the pool?): Oh. It's up on swimply. We pay $45 for the three hours?
Reporter: And do you think it's okay that he's allowed to do that while under house arrest for the murder of his wife?
What.
WhAt.
WHAT?!?!
I managed to get something out and then drove away. Later we looked it up, and sure enough, the guy murdered his wife (thankfully, not in the pool) but managed to get out on bond while awaiting trial because of COVID. So, you know. That was fun. We didn't really have another option, so we kept renting out his pool for another few months, until some of the public pools finally reopened in October.
Here's the article the guy ended up writing, if anyone's curious.
for a literature essay im writing im inexplicably looking up a lot of articles abt private pools and american culture and now im curious.
i'm dutch, and to me a private pool seems like the height of ostentatious luxury. i don't know anyone in my country who has a private pool, i grew up swimming in public pools or whatever random body of water was nearby, lakes or rivers or canals or whatever. american media has so many private pools though, are they really that common?

Here's what I needed to see in high school and post college. Unlike many other girls I know, I really loved lifting weights at the gym. It was my stress relief.
Sure I switched to the unheated pool at the side of my condo. What else was I supposed to do when stressed from work while saving money?
Of course I left that job--no matter how much the Linux screens everywhere made me smile. At least I got to scare my ex that I placed their domain in my company's database. 😅 Their face turned a ghostly white when I said that.
Duh, I placed them in the client DB. Did they think I'm crazy? I use her domain as well.
Maybe I should switch the body positivity into 🤓🧠 positivity. Too many unconsciously put me down for understanding coding, domains, networks and cybersecurity.
That stuff doesn't define all of me. It's been a long time since I opened up a screen to poke around Linux. Ironically it was on a gifted iPad.
The man who gave it to me was shocked when they showed up in the 🏥 behind me. Yeppers I'm a tech addict. Back then I was reaching for something I really enjoyed.
Ohh yeah, the man was an old coworker in the same office. Of course I had my own office in the company suite. Nevermind that it looked like a broom closet from the outside. It's that I didn't need distractions.
Another man who I had a mutual attraction to happened to work in a bright office building across the street. Too bad I didn't have the guts to invite them to a company holiday party ferry ride on the bay. (Dang scared me.)
That's ok. That last man looked like he was scared of me when they figured out I'm an engineer. Dude, it's not a cootie they could catch. At least they could add some cool points to my life. They were fun to go out with.
The nerd thing shouldn't be a weight on my shoulders. I'm geek and proud. It's not anything people should be making fun of. I've incorporated skills to help keep the internet safe. It's not my problem that a company didn't heed my ⚠️ about their flawed firewall rules.
I pushed the ⚠️ to old colleagues still in the industry. It turns out that I was right about the hole in the firewall. Companies who used the services of that corporation were down for a whole day from a cyber attack.
An old director was right about reminding me I'm getting old and should kick back. Of course I'm kicking back in bed right now. Reading lots of 📚 and staying away from news posts pounding my devices is calming.
Here's the thing, I pay attention to plenty of sports. There's an app for that. Thanks Yahoo sports!
Going over what I enjoy, is showing me that I'm well rounded and 🚫 a workaholic. I even have doggies who I 💕.
These two rascals are bonded crazy furbabies. They're a riot when they hit zoomie mode in the flat. My sister is treating them to a happy life with loads of love ❤️ , traveling, and outings. It's what they deserve.
The purse pups deserve nothing but the best and that's also why I let them stay with my sister in Tahoe. She adores their goofy personalities.
This image shows who they are while leaving your face safe from their kisses.

I only experience no pain after 30 minutes in an unheated pool.
It actually takes longer in a heated pool.
I hate hot tubs and hot showers.
Chronic pain and illness really do skew what you consider to be normal.
I'm complaining to a friend about two separate pains I've got going on right now, pains which I would categorize as "annoying," and "distracting," and she's freaking out, like, "Go to the ER!!!!" and it's like, oh, that's right. Normal people go to the ER when it hurts to breathe.
Anyway...
(Just to clarify, I'm, like, 90% sure it's costochondritis, and I'm not actually struggling to breathe. It just feels blegh. The other pain is more distracting and potentially an issue but we'll cross that bridge if we get to it.)

A/O 4 Dec 2024 - Elmendorf Fitness Pool is closed due to high chlorine levels. We are bringing them down as fast as possible, but the fix action is lowering the water temp as we have to add fresh unheated water. ALL programs are canceled.
Earliest anticipated reopening is 5 Dec.

Diantha wanted to specialise in Water types when she was younger- probably not mono-water; Amé always has a guaranteed spot on her team - but still very water heavy. She grew out of it, though.
One perk? She's a very strong swimmer; her apartment complex has a heated pool in the basement of each block, and a outdoor, unheated pool for the brave/insane/water types. Diantha swims daily, more often in the summer.

Plumbers In DC Explains All You Need To Do To Avoid Frozen Pipes
When the temperature drops too low, you may find yourself with a case of frozen pipes, which can leave you without running water to certain fixtures or even the whole house. If you suspect you have frozen pipes, give us a call today! We’ll not only get your pipes thawed in the quickest way possible, we’ll look for long-term remedies so you’re not dealing with the same problem winter after winter.
Give us a call, and we’ll get your water flowing again in no time!
Our Plumbers In DC will explain frozen pipes and how to prevent it:
When water freezes it expands putting incredible pressure on your pipes causing your pipes to break. Pipes that freeze most frequently are those that are exposed to extreme cold, like outdoor hose bibs(faucets), attics, swimming pool supply lines, water sprinkler lines, and water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements and crawl spaces, garages, or kitchen cabinets. Pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation are subject to freezing.
How to Prevent Frozen Pipes:
In the fall before the cold weather sets in follow these guidelines to prevent expensive repairs in the future:
Drain water from the swimming pool and water sprinkler supply lines following manufacturer’s or installer’s directions.
Remove, drain, and store hoses used outdoors. Close inside valves supplying outdoor hose bibs. Open the outside hose bibs to allow water to drain.
Insulating your exposed pipes, particularly in the colder areas of your home, like basements and garages, is a very crucial step. This simple action can provide a significant defense against freezing temperatures.
Equally important is maintaining a consistent temperature in your home. Resist the urge to lower your thermostat at night; a slightly higher heating bill is a small price to pay compared to the cost of dealing with burst pipes. You can also open any cabinet doors that back up to an exterior wall to allow warm air to circulate around your plumbing.
As experienced plumbers in DC we know that the pipes can still freeze. Call DJ’s Plumbing & Electrical Services at (202) 505-4675. Our plumbers in DC can help assess and fix the problem for you. We also offer a wide variety of plumbing services, so if your system is in need of plumbing repair, we can take care of that too!
