Perhaps the most irksome consequence of Cinder’s inadequate handling of the operation at Haven Academy is that it’s left the strays she dragged home unmoored and rudderless. Salem cannot fathom why Hazel bothered to bring them back: it isn’t as if he trusts her to treat them well, and it’s not as though she wants them here, particularly.

They’re children.

Under ideal circumstances, she would ignore them entirely until Cinder returned to… deal with them. Present circumstances being decidedly less than ideal, however…

“Mercury,” Salem says, rather dismal, from the entrance to the empty hall the children have taken to sparring in of late. She lifts one eyebrow, sardonic. “I’m sure you do not have anything so important to do that you can’t spare a few minutes of your time.”

Is she asking? No. She turns on her heel.

“Come with me.”

Qrow lightly pushed the boy back into his pillows, and stepped back to pull a chair towards the bedside. Before he sat down, Qrow pulled a pair of reading glasses from his breast pocket.

"Show me where you were on the page," he said as he perched the glasses on his nose. "Then you lay back and close your eyes, and I'll read you your chapter."

Hazel wasn't often bashful, let alone embarrassed, but there's a definite flush on his cheeks at Mercury's words. He had thought that only Tyrian had been around to witness his goodbye to Arthur, but he never should have underestimated either Emerald or Mercury; of course they'd seen what had happened. They kind of made it their business to know what was going on around the base.

But then something else Mercury said caught his attention.

"Wait a minute--you call me dad?" he asked, raising an eyebrow. While he hadn't really considered having kids (he had…..kind of stopped really living for a while, after Gretchen had died), he honestly didn't mind the idea.

Mercury didn't bring up the subject of his family often, but on those rare occasions he did Blake's heart bled just a little more for him. Having loving parents of her own, she couldn't imagine the pain of having a father or a mother that hated their child. It was so wrong; disgusting.

Why have children at all?

"I'm sorry you had to go through that," Blake says softly, lifting her hand as if debating whether or not she should wrap her arms around him. She could never be sure with Mercury, and eventually her hand falls back into her lap.

"You didn't deserve it."

Yes, that was the concern she had. Not that two of those wanted criminals looked as if they could have been her sister's age. What had happened to them, to make them go to this extreme...?

Emerald would have rolled her eyes or retorted irritably, but she simply lacked the energy. She hadn't had a decent night's sleep since arriving back at Evernight Castle, whether that was because of the constant snarling and howling of Grimm or her own thoughts varied from night to night. It had been difficult enough before, but now that Cinder was gone, it had gotten even worse.

She instead continues staring out of the window, blanket draped around her shoulders and arms wrapped around her knees. "Shut up..." She mumbles, in a tone weaker than she would have liked. Right now though, she was too exhausted to care. She sighs, gaze shifting slightly to look at him from the corner of her eye. "What do you want?"

Mercury was late. While not uncommon, being almost three hours late was new. So Oscar had gone in search of him.

Of course, the pouring rain makes it a bit hard to hunt the other down, and the only reason Oscar had any idea of where to go was because Mercury had mentioned wanting to look at a store because it had tools, but he does find his way. Usually he wouldn't have cared too much, but Mercury tried not to be too late for their weekly attempts to find something Mercury couldn't eat.

Oscar is about to pass by a side route when his head turns, just barely catching what sounds like Mercury's voice deeper in. The boy considers if it could be a trap for all of a minute before he pokes his head in the alley, scanning the scene.

Mercury, leaned heavily against the wall, one hand angrily working at his prosthetic which... Oscar assumes isn't working right. He's not exactly intimate with how things like that work.

Then there's the bodies that are barely breathing that Oscar skims over, people who had tried to pick a fight with Mercury and lost presumably.

"M-mercury? Do... you need help?"

They had to find Oscar and get out of here. This place gave her the creeps, and even though Ren was shielding their presence from the Grimm around them, Yang was pretty sure they only had so long before they were discovered.

So running into Mercury, one of the people who had infiltrated the Vytal Festival, who had helped to cause the fall of Beacon, while not unexpected, was one of the last things she wanted.

It took an immense amount of willpower not to just punch him in the face. But Oscar was with him, something that gave her pause.

"What the hell do you want?" Yang snarled, eyes blazing red, her fists lifting automatically when she sees Mercury. She doesn't trust him as far as she can throw him, and quite frankly, that would probably be pretty far. He was part of the reason she'd lost her arm, and she'd been just itching for a rematch, one that was fair, that didn't end in everyone watching the Vytal Festival thinking that she was someone who would hit an opponent in a sanctioned fight when they were down.

The point of Hush's blade sits against Mercury's throat for a moment longer, her expression one of a more serious nature than she normally cared to show. But, he'd repented, and she wasn't one to hold a grudge...

Alright. That was an outright lie. But she wasn't going to make a fuss over Mercury being a jackass. If she did, she'd never be able to give it up, and she preferred when she and Cinder's two little followers could at least pretend to be friends.

The blade is retracted, the parasol swung up over onto her shoulder as Neo offers Mercury a sugary-sweet smile and a hand to help him back up.
