SOULWARSTALE~UNDERTALE AU
What is Soulwarstale?
“Where the underground is now the world of the living dead. Souls of humans in the afterlife will cross the bridge and into the monster's den.”
MC:
“Frisk is one of the few humans whose soul still lives after her death.”
Backstory?
“Frisk awakens to find herself enclosed inside a coffin, surrounded by monsters. As she tries to make sense of her surroundings, she notices a small flower grasped tightly in her hand. Suddenly, the flower springs to life, its petals unfolding with a curious glint in its eye. It is then that Flowey, the caretaker of the ruins, reveals to her that she has passed on to the other side and that her soul is unlike any other - a fierce determination to cling to life even in death.
As the child departed, leaving her sister Chara behind on the surface, she couldn't help but feel worried for her. That's when Flowey offered her a tempting deal. "If you become the best reaper, I promise I'll reunite you with your sister," the mischievous creature said with a sly grin. The child was intrigued but also wary of the offer. Could she trust Flowey? What did he want in return? Nonetheless, the thought of seeing her sister again was too alluring to ignore, so the child decided to accept the deal and set out on a path to become the best Reaper she could be.”
Notes:
This AU is not particularly FRANS but you're allowed to ship who you want🍷 (Even the flower).
The old comics are right here, however things might change in the new one so be aware :)!
Characters:
Sans Frisk Flowey

Chapter 11 / Epilogue 2
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7 | Part 8 | Part 9 | Part 10 | Part 11
The last chapter T.T
To get the full experience I had writing this, listen to the Undertale song Home while reading this.
——-
……..He could see her in the darkness.
She was there. She was right there. She was a wisp but she was there.
He could grab her, pull her back, pull her into the light and it’d be the same and nothing would change and it would remain the same and he would have fixed it-
His arm shot out, hand phasing through her figure, crumbling at the touch. A single smile before that too, cracked and withered. Like she had turned to ashes, the wind cruelly blowing her away from him, separating the two of them. He wanted to follow, but something was holding him back. He could only watch as she faded away into nothingness. It was him. He who did this. He who let her be-
Curt’s eyes shot open, his arm still in the air, reaching but grasping nothing.
It took him two, three, maybe more moments before he realised what happened, all while his heavy breathing was the only sound around him.
A nightmare. Just a nightmare.
With a small groan, he started to move up into a sitting position.
And froze.
This wasn’t his room. This wasn’t any room he recognised. He could tell even with the low light. Where the hell was he? What was going on? Was he kidnapped? What happened to his friends? Had the Foundation captured them again? Had everything been for nothing? Had-
A tiny muffled groan sounded next to him and the thing capturing his hand tightened ever so slightly. Curt looked to his right. Kristine lay half slumped over the bed, holding onto his hand as if letting go would cause him to disappear. Quite impressive, as she was sound asleep by the looks of it.
He stared at her. His breathing started to even, slowly changing to match hers. And with every breath, he calmed down.
With his heart no longer beating like crazy, he slowly looked around the room. He quickly found what he was looking for.
Den and Ivan were in deep sleep on the tiny couch, closer than ever as Den had her arm over Ivan’s shoulder. Sweet, heartwarming and definitely out of character, until Curt saw the knife in Den’s hand, hanging near Ivan’s throat. Yeah, that made more sense. He duly noted that Ivan had become tangible, which meant he was alive again.
On the other end of the small room, left from him, Christian had planted himself in a chair, fast asleep in a half-sitting half-lying position so cool yet uncomfortable that it left Curt’s back screaming. He didn’t want to know how long they’d all been like that.
He released the breath and tension he was holding in. They were safe. They are safe. Thank god they are safe. They’re… safe. Thank fucking god.
With all of them accounted for, Curt took another look at the room.
A few cracks showed in the wall, especially around a clock that seemed to have been put there to cover most of it up. The time read 4:35 am. There was only a single bed, the one he occupied. A nightstand with old wood, an old lamp that probably didn’t work, the fact the room was tiny yet seemed to have a bathroom… it all made sense now.
They were in a cheap motel. They had made it out. They did it. They got out. They fucking made it out and Snee-
Memories of agony flashed through his head. Memories of lying on his back in a grassy field. Memories of pointing a gun at that bastard and pulling the trigger. Right. He’d gotten shot. Nearly gotten killed by Snee. Almost bled to death right in that field.
Tentatively, he lifted the blanket on top of him. His entire torso was wrapped in bandages. Did Ivan do it? Was the bullet still in there or had they somehow removed it? Like how the fuck was he alive right now?
…Well, fuck it. It didn’t matter. It didn’t matter how he had survived, just that he had.
With a quiet sigh, he dropped the blanket. He moved his free hand to his face, gently massaging it to get his brain running.
Snee was gone. He was gone and that was good. Curt had shot him in the head, there was no way he could’ve survived that. (Although a small voice in his mind doubted it, saying he was forgetting something. He couldn’t remember.)
But just because Snee was gone, didn’t mean the whole Foundation was. That meant they couldn’t stay here for long. Goddammit, he’d need to start planning shit immediately, didn’t he? They needed a proper car, first of all, no fictional one. One that didn’t require the host to stay awake. And they’d need rations, maybe weapons. Maybe they could use their powers to make a plane? They did get all the way here with a made up car, a plane could work. But the Foundation was clever and he’d need to figure out a way around the anomaly scanners…
Feeling incredibly tired, he rubbed his face and pulled his hand back.
His hand was stained with something black.
Curt squinted his eyes, internally asking why the fuck there was some weird black residue on his hands-
And pressed his hand against his mouth as he realised, to stop his laughter from waking them up.
The motherfuckers had sharpie’d his face.
His body shook with his laughs and chuckles, something he had desperately needed. He was actually afraid he’d wake up Kristine with how much he was shaking, but calming down was hard. And honestly, he didn’t really want to.
Eventually though, everything slowly got out of his system. Laughter, anxiety, panic… all of it slowly started to leave him. Leave him nothing but tired.
He removed his hand, still smiling. Carefully, he laid back down again, another wave of exhaustion washing over him when his head hit the pillow. Part of him didn’t want to go back to sleep, afraid of another nightmare. The other wanted a goddamn nap.
The Foundation, them being SCP’s, their next step… it could wait a little longer. Until they were all awake and ready.
His eyes glanced over them one by one. Stopping at his stained hand. God, they really were asshole friends.
He closed his eyes.
But they were his asshole friends.
And for them, he’d risk it all.
Fin
——————-
When I start writing the first chapter, I had no idea it would turn out to be the first step to this incredible journey.
Thank you Recreyo, for the time I had. And thank you everyone who liked, reblogged and commented. I love you all and your motivation helped me continue this.
I don’t think I’m quite done with the fandom yet though, but I need more time to flesh out the plots I have in mind. I want to improve, I want to grow, but I need some stuff in the middle for my plots lol. Also, I want to focus a little more on another project for a different fandom, but I’ll def come back here!
I will be starting to move this fic to AO3 soon, though it’ll ofc remain here too. The AO3 version will have some slight fixes, maybe some changes and perhaps even an extra chapter, so stay tuned for that!
P.s. I looked very forward to writing this chapter and it’s my absolute favourite lol.

Was erwartest du von diesem faszinierenden neuen Spiel? Welche Elemente von 'Undertale' und 'Moon' würdest du gerne sehen? Teile deine Gedanken und Vorfreude unten mit!

I am now writing a small review for Bug Fables - The Everlasting Sapling. Characters and Story
The main trio were some of the best characters I have seen in video games. They started out a bit dysfunctional, barely knowing each other, but grew into a really good team and really close friends over the course of the game. I also liked that their relationship stayed purely platonic, not a single time I thought there was a ship worthy moment, they very much felt like friends that are welded by fire. A lot of the other characters also were really adorable, like the other explorations teams and Elizant II had a really cool arc in my opinion. I was really impressed by Zasp, but sadly that also means that I need to talk about...
Mothiva! What were they thinking?! I am not opposed to the rival character, but Mothiva started out as bitch and stayed a bitch during the whole game and I never understood why Zasp kept simping for her! Then the story! The main motivation were finding out more about the team, especially Vi and Leif. Leif probably had the best arc in the whole game, Vi's arc was also pretty good, but Kabbu got the short end of the stick. We didn't learn that much about him and during his shining moment he acted kinda out of character, only for the narrative to make sense. The story started out as treasure hunt, but had some foreshadowing already, only to take a really dark turn at the last possible moment with the last area, going pretty much eldritch horror. It worked, it very much worked, but I also have some issues with certain parts of it. Chapter 5 and 6 were really strange, especially Chapter 5 had some things that turn out to be problematic when you think about it. And the main villain wasn't properly set up, even his back story was hidden in the spy notes. The only reason why it felt good to beat him up was, because he stole all we worked for, but other than that, there wasn't that much chemistry of him being the main villain. In short, Bug Fables is one of the games where the GREAT characters save the story that starts to struggle a bit on the last stretch. The dynamic of the team is amazing and that you could let them talk in every single room was amazing. Every game should have that. Music Okay, I don't have any complains here. The music is AWESOME! So many catchy tunes, I found myself going to Youtube every time I beat a new boss to listen to the tunes. Every major boss (outside of the bounties) has its own musical theme and I am a sucker for unique boss themes. The area themes also were fantastic and I loved to listen to them. Snakemouth Den reminded me a lot of Link's Awakening, then my husband came and said "Reminds me of Undertale" and it happened throughout the whole game. The composer clearly got influenced a lot by other games and used it to their best abilities to compose a fantastic OST. I will listen to it a long time after I finished playing the game. Gameplay The gameplay is consisting of two parts. Overworld puzzles and battles. Battles function like in Paper Mario. Turn based combat with quick time event attacks. The attacks are quick and easy to perform and you can block enemy attacks. Everything can be done super well when you have tight timing, so there was always suspense in the battles. You also got a bunch of skills to use to cause more damage or weaken the enemy or heal and you can use items to heal or cause damage. The battle system was fun, especially because the enemies all had different attack types and the team often had to combine their attacks to take them down. I loved the "relay turn" mechanic, where a member could give up their turn to another member. However, the member who did two turns in a row would deal less damage, so you had to think how to use it. What I didn't like that much, the main attacks pretty much stayed the same the whole game. It would have been nice for these bugs to get a little upgrade for them outside of skills. Later battles pretty much have to be fought with skills, or you would fight forever, because of the high HP the enemies have. You also have a medal system, where you practically equip advantages in battles. It was a fun system and you could try out a lot of different builds. I went with a build that was Kabbu as tank, Leif as supporter and Vi as damage dealer. Now onto the puzzles. Our bugs all have different abilites to use and they used them to solve all kind of puzzles, but sometimes the puzzles were a bit ....abritrary. Sometimes I genuinely had to look up the solution to a puzzle because I never would have gotten the solution on my own. While I could solve most puzzles on my own, I had to look up solutions three or four times. I got especially mad at the book puzzle in the Rubber Prison, because it is really EASY to run past that shelf
where you have to put the books in and I ran through the whole prison three times before I found out that there is a shelf where you can interact with. The world also had some strange twists and turns, where you could move in hidden alleyways even though it looked like solid wall... That was strange. At least the game had lots of optional stuff to do, with tons of sidequests to fulfil, some of them even having important story value (Leif's Request for example), you could find five bounties to fight, there is an optional card game that is NOT "conquer the area" (I am so bad at these kind of card games) and even a post game where you can finish up all your quests and get a few new very challenging fights. Final Thoughts I very much enjoyed this game. I was very motivated to play through it, especially once I hit chapter 4, I finally wanted to solve the mystery of the sapling and the mystery of Leif and I just wanted to see the artifacts come together. I had fun with the gameplay, I liked the music, the puzzles were a bit infuriating sometimes and my controller was janky and made me go "uuugh" a few times as well. The world building in this game was a bit barebones though, because they put it all in lore books instead of showing me through the world. The lore books could be found anywhere and then brought back to the library where they could be read. They gave all the info about the world of Bugaria and stuff like why the ladybugs are banned from the ant kingdom and why only bees and wasps fly, but I wonder why that couldn't be told in the game? It would have been easy to just add some dialogue that explains that other bugs can't fly anymore for example. But mostly, I was fine with it. I got a lot of the information I wanted and I can live with reading lore books, it's better than nothing and there was a bit of environmental storytelling as well. I really enjoyed this. And also, some foreshadowing in Snakemouth Den is the freaking best I've seen in quite some time. This game isn't perfect, no, but it also is pretty damn enjoyable. I would say, the game could be better, yeah, but in a positive way. This game could get great if it tried more, but it is pretty damn enjoyable like it is. If I had to give it a score, I would probably go for an 7 or 8/10.

[Reader is Female, for the record there is a rare phenomenon known as Golden Blood where a individual is RHnull having no RH factor which means they have no - or + in their blood. For more information please research it further on your preferred method. This is an Undertale original Vampire AU done by @taytay2656 ]
Here you were, standing in the lions den. The lion in question was staring you down, sizing you up. Lord Xyrus, owner of this lovely castle and noble of the area. You came here looking for work, knowing full-well that this was not the place for you...but you didn’t have much choice.
It was either this or return to your home and be forced into a political marriage to a man who would turn you into another trinket in his growing harem of ‘brides’ so to speak. You did everything in your power to look like a peasant girl, giving away your clothes, bartering for any scraps of clothing and even rolling in dirt. Well it worked, by the time you go there you looked like some vagabond tossed out of their home.
Now here you were asking for help... before a person you knew would be dangerous...especially if he found out your secret. You flinched as he stood up and walked around you, you held your breath as he took his seat again.
“Well you seem to be in good health, you’ll be put to work outside on the grounds. Do well and you may work your way up to being a maid in the house...or be apart of my...nobles.”
He smirked at you, you cursed your face...your mother always told you that you were born with a ‘youthful’ face. Round and cute, you shook your head and bowed to him.
“I will do my best out on the grounds my lord, I promise not to be a disappointment to you.”
He gave you a stern nod and lead you outside, he introduced you to a senior member of the groundskeepers. He was a tall, older man but had such a welcoming smile, his name was Arthur and he took you under his wing. You didn’t have much trouble adapting really, true you were born into nobility you snuck away to help the maids and servants with chores as a way to pass the time. Your favorite thing to do was go outside in the garden an help tend to the flower beds and vegetable patches.
You felt truly at ease here, yes it was dangerous to be in the presents of Lord Xyrus but you’d take this over being a harem girl any day.
.....But this ease would not last long...
[six months later]
It was one particularly nice day that you were outside, one of the workers...a young girl came running up and telling you the lord wished to see you. You waisted no time stepping down off the ladder with your basket of apples, handing them to the girl you made your way to the castle where Lord Xyrus was waiting.
“Ah, there you are. I need you to do me a special chore, my brother who lives up the way needs his home cleaned and since I can’t spare any of my indoor servants at the moment an you seem to be the most...studious you seem to be the most qualified for this.”
You tilted your head, he had plenty enough servants to spare...but then again it was best not to argue. You nodded and listened closely to his instructions on where to find his home. You listened carefully and headed off into the woods.
Odd that the two don’t live together given their family but then again sometimes family are better living their own lives. The path towards the home spiraled through the woods, you didn’t mind really. It was so nice to see the beauty of the woods here, for a moment you stopped, extend your arms and breathed in the luscious air of the woods.....
That was a mistake...
The wind was knocked out of you when arms wrapped around your midsection, next thing was the sharp prick of teeth sinking into your skin. You got a look at your attacker, his burnt umber kimono slowly staining with your blood. You noted he was rather large frame...that and you were practically lifted off the ground into his hold. You could feel his tongue dig into the muscles, ripping them to produce more blood, he took flesh that was for sure. Yes he got a taste of your blood...and he wasn’t letting go any time soon.
“.......Are you done yet?” You groaned, folding your arms across your chest.
You felt him jump a little as he let you go, you fell flat on your butt. You turned and glared at him but it faded when you saw his...scared expression. Slowly you stood up, slightly dizzy from the loss of blood but it was slowly coming back. Along with your wound closing up.
“Next time don’t drop me, you must be the masters brother. He didn’t give me your name so mind telling it to me?”
He didn’t answer...he just stared....you stared back and sighed. You looked around and just barely through the tree’s you spotted a small cottage, probably his home. You turned to him, took his hand and started pulling him towards the cottage in question. He needed to clean up and so did you...funny he didn’t resist.
“Well I suppose we can get you cleaned up and we can do introductions then hm?”
You weren’t sure what to say, poor thing looked lost...alright sure he just tried to kill you but you just survived his attack. That probably not only surprised him but scared him, the cottage inside was small but it felt like you stepped into the story book.
The floors inside were lined with tatami mats, there was a cute little square filled with sand and a fire going in it. There was a line from the top of the ceiling holding a pot, a nice place to cook a stew. There was a smaller room where a futon mat was laid out for sleep, you doubted he slept much but it was still nice. There were scrolls and books on shelves about.
This place was truly a little slice of heaven, if things were different you would have loved to live here...even if you had to live with someone who just tried to take half of your neck off. You walked to the little washbasin in the corner of the room, it was half filled with water. Taking up a rag you dipped it in the water and walked over to him, he backed away when you came close.
“Now don’t be difficult, your brother Xyrus sent me to take care of things around here an my guess is also take care of you. So be still please, if you leave blood sitting on your face it’ll get sticky.” You managed to get pull him close and dabbed his stained mouth clean.
Once he was clean you washed off around your neck, you poured some water into the washbasin and let the rag soak. You went to the smaller room and proceeded to look for a clean kimono to change your....right you didn’t know his name.
“Whats your name please, I need to call you something.”
“C-Cayden!” He practically hiccuped his name, you almost giggled at it but kept your composure.
“Very good then, come here master Cayden I got a clean kimono for you. Please change an I’ll go wash that one, don’t want it staining.”
In a daze he took the kimono, walked into the smaller room and proceeded to change, you waited till he came out. Seems all his kimonos had the same color, orange. You took his sullied kimono and headed outside, just a few steps away was a stream. Kneeling you began washing and scrubbing the kimono clean of your blood. You heard him come up behind you, he knelt down beside you.
“Y-you shouldn’t be at my home, does my brother know about you?!” You couldn’t miss the waver in his tone.
“No your brother doesn’t know, doubt if he did he’d send me to you. An if your referring to my blood...I took great measures to make sure no one found out about my blood, golden blood isn’t exactly something you want others to know about.” You smiled at him and patted his head, he was so sweet.
“Well...when your finished with that we must head back to his castle, my brother would be very cross with me if I kept you.”
That made you sad, you kinda hoped you’d stay and be ‘his’ servant but its not like you had a choice, you were obligated to obey.
“Alright master Cayden, as you wish...if its not too much trouble do you have a cloak or anything I could wear. Don’t wanna walk into his home covered in blood, might scare the others.”
He nodded and ran back to his cottage, by the time he got back you were just hanging his kimono on tree branch to dry in the sun. It was adorable how he put it over you and fastened the clasped around the front. He took you by your hand and swiftly lead you down a carved path towards the castle, if you knew this was here it would have made the trek to the cottage easier...but you digressed. The sun was starting to set by the time you reached the castle, you barely stepped foot into the castle grounds when you saw master Xyrus.
He was damn near running towards the both of you, you were tempted to hide but then why? You didn’t do anything wrong, in a blink he was before you tearing the cloak from you. He gripped the part of your clothes that were still stained with blood, he inhaled and turned to you. Eyes widening, you could have sword you saw a glint of saliva forming in the corner of his mouth...
“Inside...please.” He whispered to you as he fixed the cloak back on you.
Doing as you were told you walked back in, looking back to be sure Cayden wasn’t getting yelled at. But instead Xyrus was simply patting his brother’s arm and sending him on his way, thats good at least there wasn’t bad feelings between the two. You were careful to avoid the maids and servants around, just because your clothes were covered didn’t mean they couldn’t smell your blood. Finally you reached master Xyrus’ quarters, you closed the door and were about to sit down before it opened again, the master stepping inside.
He closed and locked the door, again the cloak torn from you. His arm swiftly wrapped around you and pulled you into an embrace, his fangs the color of ocean pearls gingerly pierced your flesh. Compared to Cayden it was a change, to steady yourself you held on to him. This did feel a lot less painful, after a moment he pulled his head away. Kissing the mark he left, already starting to heal.
“Hmm yes...to think I had you in my possession and never knew.” He purred, he cradled the back of your head as he tilted it forward.
“You’ll live among my nobles from now on, on top of that I think I’ll give you a name.”
You blinked at him. “An..what name is that?”
You watched as a Cheshire grin formed on his face as he leaned in to your neck.
“Ambrosia...” he hissly moaned as he again pressed his fangs into you..for another drink.
End, more to come if you wish to have more.

Hello! This is Sugar! Wanted to let you know I think you are an amazing writer and I believe in you! I had a quick question for you tho, how/when did you know this was what you wanted to do?
Sending you love!!💚💚💚
Short answer: This has been a long and broken path. Wanting something and making it happen was a series of false starts and self reflection.
But I have always loved storytelling. So here’s my long answer:
I started making OCs for my favorite shows since I can remember. They were all originally self inserts with powers or alterations. To name a few, I had a best friend to Sonic, a sixth Power Ranger, and an immortal being of the Force that helps Luke on his journey. There were so many.
My first fanfic was in Harry Potter, and… well… I don’t know if anyone remembers Fanfiction.Net and it’s toxicity level in the 90s… (who knows, maybe it’s never changed?) But my tiny little 12-year-old-written self-insert was eaten alive and spit out to die slowly. I had like 12 views, no likes, and 3 comments of vile cruelty.
So then I only wrote for my friends. I created a multiverse combining OCs from Dragonball Z to Star Wars… Gundam Wing to Harry Potter… Xanth to Xena and Hercules. I made their descendants, lore, etc. But it was all for my friends’ eyes alone.
In high school, I went to Creative Writing summer camps (which I later became a camp counselor in… Ah, summer jobs…). In college, one of my majors was English with an emphasis on Creative Writing. But I did realize I had another calling by then too. One that was a bit more stable. And, honestly, Creative Writing courses killed my drive to write. I was looked down on for aspiring to be a “genre writer.” And it’s crazy to think I listened to them, but I did… except once…
In my senior year of college, for my last story, I wrote about Lucifer’s fall from the perspective of the fallen angel himself. It was inspired by John Milton’s Paradise Lost (which I had taken an entire course on) and my own battle with my faith, Catholicism. I had been an active member in the church, but in college I finally let myself explore parts of me I didn’t before. I had sex. I let myself finally acknowledge that I wasn’t straight. I had more sex with everyone. I dated guys and girls, non binary and trans. And I became an outsider to the world I once knew. All that taken into perspective, I felt for a character who used to be so close to God’s right hand, and then loses his position because of choices that didn’t fall in line with the teachings. So I wrote from my heart in a tale as old as patriarchy.
And no one in class made a goddamn negative critique.
I don’t know how many of you out there have ever taken a creative writing class, but I still can’t put into words how shocking it was to not receive even a single red note. Not even that pretentious jackass who was already published in multiple online magazines had any comment for improvement. Instead, what was supposed to be a fifteen minute round robin of commentary became an hour long conversation about how jarringly relatable Satan is as a protagonist. Some were grappling with God as a tyrant. Others enjoyed the juxtaposition of Jesus and Satan. It was awesome. It was fun. It was everything I wished a my entire four years had been: talking about ideas.
But then I didn’t get a single call back from any graduate schools when I decided to use that piece and genre fiction in my portfolio. So I focused instead on the job I did get that does the other thing I love.
And I stopped writing.
Fast forward almost ten years. I’m now married, career secure, and looking to have a baby. I haven’t grappled with the fact that I love sex but have married an asexual man who I love beyond words. I’m also going into heat. (That’s a more honest way to describe the “ticking clock” everyone talks about as you near your 30s and then get into it. Holy hell ovulation is a hungry beast).
I needed an outlet, and it couldn’t be private. I was already too private. At the same time as I’m grappling with this, a friend introduced me to this deliciously dark character of Gaster in Undertale, and I just… started writing.
I created an AO3 account under the name Dark Crystal Demon and I let myself write whatever I wanted to write. I wrote rape by plants and ghosts. I wrote about women with dicks. Myself with a dick. I wrote about BDSM and Master/Pet play and It. Felt. So. Good.
I feel alive writing whatever I want because I can’t be whatever I want in real life. I honestly can’t. I’m highly respected in my career, but that all goes away if I reveal an account like this. I want to keep the career I have. So welcome to my secret den of dreams and nightmares. I’m very good at decorating closets I find myself hiding in.
I didn’t plan on writing for others, but my love for pleasuring others has definitely intermingled with my love for writing erotic content. Most of the time I write for me, but there are a few of you in my DMs who know when I’m writing for you ^_~ I can’t help but tease you. I adore you so.
Teasing friends made me realize I like world building around people’s desires. So that’s when I started taking commissions. But balancing family, career, and writing has been difficult these last five years. You all who have been with me for a while have seen my giant hiatuses in fanfics, etc.
During this pandemic I realized I wanted to finally give writing it’s chance. Instead of taking another career-advancing task, I decided to stay where I am in my job. So for the first time in a very long time, I can finally use my free time for my hobby and not extra work. (Can I just say, making a calendar for when I’m going to work on different fics, commissions, Master Classes, and erotic articles is exhilarating.)
So here I am. Told you it was a long story. Communities in writing are just like relationships, some are abusive and treat you poorly. I got lucky and found one that has let me be me. That’s why, when I tell you all I appreciate your support, it’s coming from the center of my soul. Thank you for letting me be me, especially you, Sugar. You are a very cherished supporter. 💜

my hand slipped for about 10 days straight or so! have some hollow knight gijinkas! (and there are at least 3 more i want to do, too! i just didnt want to run out of photoset space lol)
UPDATE: i drew a lot more than just 3 lol. gijinkas part 2 (hollow, grimm, the white lady, radi, lace, seer, marmu, unn, bretta, cloth, & myla) can be found here.
i’ll put notes about these under a readmore for curious parties.
please read my faq page! (tl;dr version: dont use my art for icons/graphics/whatever without getting my permission beforehand, please use they/them pronouns for ghost and the other vessels in any tags/commentary, dont tag as kin/me/whatever pls)
GHOST - all vessels are albino and have glossy black pools of void for eyes. i think proximity to the void/the pale beings influences how much the vessels grow so ghost, who ollied out early and never came back to hallownest, has been 4′7″ forever even into adulthood (theyre supposed to be in their early 20s here). yes they are Incredibly salty about this. all vessels probably started out with similar Undertale-Brand Androgynous Chin Length Haircuts(tm) with small differences; ghost's identifiers are no bangs (with that hair tucked behind their ears) & big chunky eyebrows.
HORNET - is where i started making gijinkas because i wanted to see more brown hornet lol. i see a lot of parallels between hollow knight lore & australian history in general, and the deepling-weaver lore reminded me of the makassan muslim traders who were on friendly terms with many indigenous australian groups pre-colonization. so... i got really excited about hijabi hornet and decided to Make My Own Content lol
MONOMON - i love valdotpng’s locs monomon So Much i decided to make my monomon gijinka a different ethnicity just to make sure i wouldnt copy that design lmfao. i went with korean monomon because women’s hanbok have such big poofy skirts and lots of dangly stuff (goreum etc) that could echo her jellyfish features. shes trans by the way
HERRAH - incorporated a bunch of den sculpture motifs in her crown and cloak with spiderweb patterns on the cloak hem and the front of her tunic. her and hornet’s 6-braid hairstyles when veiled are the same because i like to make myself sad, which is why baby hornet is also there on her ref
LURIEN - the four-leaf-clover-shaped bun in his put-together pics is courtesy of monomon & herrah who decided to do something with his hair since he wouldn’t. scruffy lurien on his solo ref has been writing reports for 3 days straight w/o painting breaks, has been sleeping in his binder the whole time, & is about to get screamed at for it by monomon lol. he doesn’t wear gold jewelry as a show of loyalty to tpk
QUIRREL - everyone does little samurai quirrel but he talks like one in the jpn localization so everyone is valid actually. he’s very baby-faced for his age (27~30?) but still a whole foot taller than ghost. obv his trans tape is from monomon as u can tell from the notes but she gave him his earrings, netsuke, and inrou too. the ahoge in his ponytail are supposed to be like lil antennae

Tumblr’s Top Fandoms of 2020
https://ift.tt/37LLRPI
It’s been a weird and often devastating year, and our social media has reflected that. Tumblr has just released its top fandoms of 2020 and it’s fascinating to see how a year of pandemic and quarantine has affected transformative fandom and broader cultural trends. In a year when almost everyone spent a lot more time at home, Animal Crossing: New Horizons was the most blogged about topic on the social media platform, followed by animated dramedy Steven Universe, Belgian SKAM adaptation WtFOCK, K-pop supergroup BTS, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. We talked to Tumblr’s Trend Expert Amanda Brennan about how she interpreted the biggest trends of the year, how this was a big year for animation and international media, and why 2020 was the year everyone stopped worrying about what was cool and just embraced what they love. And, now, our chat with Brennan. (This Q&A has been edited for clarity and length.)
Den of Geek: I’ve heard you refer to the users as the Tumblr hive-mind or the orchid, whatever it is. I was just hoping you could generally talk about what the Tumblr hive-mind is to you? Which is the way of saying, who uses Tumblr generally? And how and why? If you can even extrapolate those things. Go!
Amanda Brennan: Most of our audiences is Gen Z; it’s at 48%. Our new user registration with Gen Z is even higher; I’m pretty sure it’s 60%. These are people who come to Tumblr because they love something so much they just want to share that love with people who love it as much as they do. I know that feels like a giant umbrella, but that’s the thing: Tumblr is what you make of it. If you love sports, sports Tumblr is intense hockey Tumblr, so good. If you love TV, you’ll have all of that. K-pop Tumblr, totally amazing. Furby Tumblr is off the hook and they make these incredible creations. I’ve recently gotten into Stained Glass Tumblr.
There’s layers upon layers. No matter what you love, there’s something on Tumblr for you. That’s both the easiest thing and the hardest thing about it. You have to go in being like, “Alright, I’m so into this thing, what does Tumblr have for me?” It’s not like the other social media networks, right? It’s really about what you love rather than who you know.
Yeah, I like that. I did want to ask you specifically about the process of how you track trends and how you make decisions about what to track?
We built the whole taxonomy that powers fandom metrics based on what Tumblr talks about. I’m a librarian, as you know, and I kind of reverse engineered it. My first year in review at Tumblr in 2013, they handed me a spreadsheet and they’re like, ‘OK, go to town.” So I was like, “Cool, let me pull out the threads that I see.” We really let the data tell us how to analyze it, if that makes sense. So when it comes to what we track, I have a running notebook that I’ve kept all year of the things that I’ve wanted to have in year in review.
The Witcher has been on my list since it came out. Animal Crossing has been another one. The Old Guard had a huge moment. I was just writing notes, like, “Oh, what is this thing? And we’ll keep an eye on it.” I have an amazing team. We all are into our own pieces of Tumblr. So we’ll all work together to just keep an eye on different fandoms. I don’t know if you know about Minecraft YouTuber fandom?
Yeah. I was actually listening to the latest Fansplaining last night and they mentioned it in that. I was just like, “OK, a new thing.” There’s always a new thing to learn about.
There’s always a new thing. That’s the beauty of Tumblr. It’s so fluid in fandom. You can go from one fandom to another and then you’ll see like, “Ooh, what is this thing?” I’ve got Supernatural on the brain, as who in the fandom doesn’t right now. [This interview was recorded on the day of the Supernatual series finale.] I was telling someone, the whole reason I got into Supernatural was because I saw a gif from the show on Tumblr and I was like, “What is happening? Let me go back and watch this entire series.” That’s the vibe of Tumblr, right? You see a thing and you’re like, “Oh, I need to know everything about that.”

Hmm. Yeah, for sure. I was interested in talking to you or getting your insight into how trends you saw or data you saw that were maybe tied to the very unique experience of being in the middle of a pandemic.
Yeah. I was looking back at the predictions that I had made last year and like four of those things didn’t even come out. It was just so unexpected. There’s two things that we really saw tied to the pandemic. The first was “cottagecore” as an aesthetic. It kind of touched everything because it’s soothing, it feels comfortable. In March and April in the early days, when you didn’t know what to do, you’re stuck in a forest isolation. Cottagecore has got this vibe of chosen isolation. It was very fantasy-driven and something to reach out for.
That evolved also into nostalgia. I think this year’s really big theme is nostalgia and comfort. We saw huge returns to fandoms like Twilight and Avatar: The Last Airbender. Avatar going on Netflix was such a world-breaking moment. Not only did it introduce a new, younger fandom to the show, there’s a lot of Avatar content once you get into it, but it brought people back to a younger time in their lives. Remembering and rewatching. The Avatar fandom, as you see, it’s all over all of the lists. Zuko is number 20 on all of the things on Tumblr this year. Avatar was able to redefine people’s year. Because you know what, we’re all at home, I’m going to binge Avatar. Reignite my love for this fandom.
A lot of TV too, because TV is episodic, you get lost in it. Movies had a really rough year. When we look at the movies, movies like Megamind were trending this year. That comfort movie that you go back and watch 17 times.
Yeah. I was curious about that too. The balance or proportions between older fandoms and newer fandoms, like the Avatar example. I was curious how much that changed this year? How much you thought it was tied to the pandemic? How much is tied to accessibility and things, like Avatar coming to Netflix? Do you think that is an interest in older fandoms? Or that it’s going to continue past the pandemic?
Yeah. I think another high-level theme of this year is the rejection of cringe culture. I’m getting a little ahead of myself, but I’ll tie it all back in. I think people are realizing what their values are and not being afraid to admit that they like a thing. Not caring what other people think of the things they like. Unabashedly loving the things they love. That’s why I think we do see a resurgence in these older fandoms.
Because people who may have loved them their whole lives, or may have been nervous to share that they liked it when they were younger they’re not afraid anymore. They’re like, “You know what? Twilight, it’s not that great, but I love it. This is my emotional support vampire.” Recognizing that you can be critical of something. You can see where its flaws are, but you can still love it. That duality of fandom is something that is going to persist into next year. That freedom to just like a thing, because you like it. Be able to see its flaws, but still be like, “You know what? Overall, this brings me joy and the world is melting down.”
I’m on board with that mission, that plan for 2021. I did want to ask about the role of non-English language media, especially live action stuff. Generally because I was someone who fell into The Untamed this year, but I saw that there were two SKAM remakes as well that are on the top 10. In general, have you seen over your time at Tumblr, and maybe especially in the past few years, an increase in non-English language content? Do you think that is mostly English speakers and Americans being more open to that or being able to find it easier? Or do you think it’s also an influx of people from outside the United States coming to Tumblr? Or both?
Interesting. The data that we work with is actually stripped of all user information. I don’t really have an insight into where these people are coming from. I do think that users in general are more open to content in any language. Tumblr is more interested in characters than where the story comes from. Thinking about The Untamed, it’s just such a compelling story, it doesn’t matter if you have to read subtitles.
To parallel it to something in major pop culture, Parasite. People are becoming more open to just watching content because it’s good. SKAM is really fascinating to me because the number one live action show is wtFOCK. Then, I think two years ago, 2018, the original SKAM was number one at some point. This show really transcends language barriers. It transcends geographical barriers. At the core, the story of the teenagers is just so relatable to anyone. We’ve seen lots of translation happening and not just into English. Translation of SKAM into other languages, just because people want more of these characters and their iterations, no matter what locale they’re based in. I’m waiting for some professor to have a class on it, because it’s so fascinating to me.
I also wanted to ask about how you thought the election cycle affected Tumblr this year, if there were any trends or data that you were like, “Yes, of course this is what people were doing on Tumblr this year.”
Tumblr has always had this backbone of social justice. This year, it came out stronger and in more force. No matter what fandom you were in or interests, everyone I know on Tumblr was participating in sharing social justice stuff. Even politics, if they weren’t from the US, those kinds of memes that were like, “I feel for you”. The way that fandoms do. I see your show is ending and I’m sorry.
The one thing that Tumblr really had leading up to the election was such an appreciation for the postal service. Especially Gen Z, their world is so much larger due to digital connection. Mail order, just as well as sending letters and keeping in touch with your digital friends is just as important as keeping in touch with your IRL friends. All of the artists on Tumblr, so many of them turn to mail order to replace cons. This is their livelihood. By the time the fall hit and the postal service was having all these issues, people are ready to jump in. There were the Transformers dressed like mail people.
https://morethanmeetstheass.tumblr.com/post/626466946047705088/i-completely-forgot-to-post-this-guy-here-this-is
There were all these comments like “support your postal workers,” “support the USPS.” It really boils down to the fact that we are all connected and the mail service is something in the US that connects everyone. Even overseas. Supporting these artists whose livelihood went from IRL to online and having to deal with all of this.
And the “Super Putin Election.” The confluence of those elements. I was just surfing on my personal computer and I was on Tumblr and I saw a post being like “Destiel’s canon.” I’m like, “Excuse me?” I immediately texted my team. I was like, “Open up your work computers, let’s go.”
It’s time.
We all signed on trying to figure out what’s going on and watching the numbers. That, to me, is thrilling. I said this to someone else, but it felt like the night of The Dress. To have that moment where everyone on the internet is feeling the energy. The things that kept getting layered on top of it. Putin and Sherlock and all the anime mysteries. It was breakneck speed, and it was really thrilling just to be in that moment, and so Tumblr.
I did want to ask you about an increase in animated fandom and potentially anime fandom. A lot of these things I’m anecdotally or just observing things in my own little corner of the internet. It just seems like animation and anime, probably at least partially because Netflix has accumulated a much larger anime collection and seems to be investing in these sorts of things. Have you seen that increase? Could you talk about it, if so?
It plays into what we were talking about earlier, twofold. That nostalgia vibe, the late nineties anime vibe, that art style. Also your comfort zone and being open to more stuff just because it’s good. Not worrying about reading subtitles and stuff like that. But anime in general had a huge year. Haikyū!! ending also transposed into other fandoms because that moment of the final panels, it brings people together. People being so excited to see this massive thing come to a close. You might not be familiar with Haikyū!! in general, but you’ll see the fanart and be like, “Oh, I feel that.” It’s the emotion of it.
The popularity of Avatar did also open people’s doors to like, “Oh, well, what else can I watch? What else do I want to learn about”? Boku No Hero was consistently on our Week In Review every week. BEASTARS is another Netflix anime that’s at the top. Then Mo Dao Zu Shi, thinking about The Untamed, the story of Mo Dao Zu Shi is so fascinating. I don’t think I can name another piece of content that has that storyline. People are just ready to take it all on.
I did want to ask you, I think you’ve probably talked about some of these already, but what were some of the biggest fandom moments for you on Tumblr this year?
Oh boy. So many things going canon. Catradora was a huge, huge moment. I cried watching that. The Witcher, Jaskier, introducing this whole new world to Henry Cavill. I saw a post yesterday that was like once Superman was goth, a lot more people realize that he’s hot. Repurposing and looking at things in a new way. Among Us, so huge. There is a user who is doing a comic about White and Pink being in love. She’s giving them lore. She’s giving them backstory, personalities. It is amazing.
Unus Annus, I am not very into streamers, but I’ve caught some of those videos. When they had their final stream, I was tuning in. I was like, “Are you really going to delete the channel?” Then they did. Just watching the fans have that moment, even though I am not in that fandom, it was wonderful so meaningful.
Harry Potter being taken by the fans. Fans own Harry Potter now, and that’s what matters. The Old Guard also came out of nowhere and really blew Tumblr away. The Immortal Husbands. I love that ship. I’ve got to touch on almost all of the places, MCR, My Chemical Romance. Those fans have woken up and they didn’t get their tour, but they will. They’re not going to sleep until they do.
Because we maybe all have Supernatural on the brain, to a certain extent. I’m just curious how you think, that show’s been on for 15 years. The fandom has gone through literal generations. How do you think the fandom is going to change?
There’s always going to be a supernatural gif for everything. People will continue gifing it. It’s going to surpass what it is and it’s going to become that comfort show. This is a personal anecdote, but when I go to the dentist, every single time supernatural is on. It’s just like, “Oh, I get to watch my boys while I’m getting my teeth cleaned. That’s good.” It’s always going to be there. It’s always going to be there for people when they need it the most. We’re going to see a lot more fan creations. People love these boys, men now they’re adults. People love these characters. I haven’t watched this season. I am going to watch the finale tonight. I’m going in almost cold. I know that a lot of fan favorites have returned. My prediction for Supernatural fandom going forward is seeing these side stories come through in fanfiction even more than they already do. Lots more Charlie. That’s personal of mine because I love her.
I don’t think you’re alone in this.
Yeah. Who doesn’t love Charlie? Seeing these smaller characters come out and just shine in their own fan works, more so than the world might’ve provided them in canon.
It feels dangerous to make fandom predictions based on what happened this year, but if you have any predictions and or hopes for the coming year in terms of Tumblr and fandom?
Where we’re at now and going forward, it’s all about true authenticity. Screw what people think. We’re rejecting our old ways of thinking. We’re about flipping perspectives and forgetting what you thought was important in exchange for what you truly love. 2020 has helped us all figure out what our values at our core are. It’s about choosing something that makes you happy, that supports you, and your people. Choosing the happiness of those around you and making sure that you’re fighting for the goodness in life. Which sounds really sugar sweet, but one of the things, again, that I love about Tumblr is it is about putting people first based on the things they love. That’s what I see happening.

Sanslix Headcanons;;
-Felix is the ‘fallen human’ from Sans’s Undertale file, but not the body; Villager Felix is a reincarnation to be specific. [deadname] Dreemurr would have died while Sans was a child, making the timespan of the game file around 11 years or so (died at 13 y/o). (13 max, died at 10 y/o) - However, Felix’s soul remained a Pacifist post death, as it was Toriel’s idea to suggest killing some humans in the first place. When it didn’t work out, naturally this was the line of logic to take, directing Frisk to follow this path. -Because of this, villager!Felix feared that the reason Sans hung around was out of anger or revenge, despite never having hurt a monster. This sort of guilt complex would have lasted around 2 years until Sans asked him out. (Felix thought he was being bullied, when it was a noncommunicated teasing crush.) -Felix, as a child in both timelines, coincidentally wore a blue hoodie to hide his features due to dysphoria and cold. It isn’t a parka, however, and is just fuzzy and soft. -Sans started out stalking Felix on halloween 2019, and fell in love December; likely because of puns at first, with meta stuff and observation making it more serious. - Sans leaves sticky notes all over Felix’s house, just as he would with Papyrus. - Sans helped teach Felix to warp around actively in a small area, which is one reason he has a headstart for his age on this; most animals his age and younger only passively warp, ending up where they want to be rather than where they intend to be. -Sans will Prank call Felix, even if the call is actually for another reason. His texts can be serious, however. - Both have a taste for the sneakers and hoodie look, and they sometimes just hang around loitering, like delinquents vibe without the actual troublemaking (most of the time) - The Underground may actually be under Zendo, exiting out on the mountain on the East Coast. The entrance is likely blocked off for safety, if that were the case. New Snowdin is a subset of the town, not far from the Campsite or the Park/Bamboo Forest. -Most of Sans’s affection is expressed lowkey, although things can get intense at home. -One of Sans’s favorite hangout places is Zendo Mall’s Food Court, which is on the top floor of the mall. -As a couple, they probably fall asleep together in random seats around the mansion; such as one of the living room/den couches, or if the weather is nice, the stands.

“Ok, look up at the ceiling.”
Papyrus turned his head upwards, staring at the snowy ceiling of their shelter as he sat on the edge of the bed.
“Good, good,” Sans nodded. “Now down at the floor.”
The little skeleton dropped his head to look at his feet, his chin pressed against his collarbone.
“Now, left.”
He lifted his head to look at the opening of the shelter.
“And right.”
He swiveled his head, looking at his brother’s jacket and his scarf, hanging on the coat rack near the fire room.
“Now look at me.”
Papyrus turned his head back center, his eyes meeting Sans’ as he knelt in front of him on the floor next to the bed.
“Great!” Sans grinned. “You didn’t wince at all! How does it feel?”
Papyrus tilted his head side to side before answering. “Feels better. No more achy.”
“I’m so glad, Pap,” Sans smiled.
It had been two weeks since the incident at the waterfall. Papyrus had been able to sit up without too much pain about a week after it, and his brother had guided him through bone training exercises to help him get back to his old self.
“Ok, let’s make sure your back and those ribs of yours are doing better, too.”
Sans had Papyrus lean back, forward, to one side, then the other, twist left to right, and then stretch his arms above his head, taking a deep breath to fill his lungs. There was no wincing, no more pain.
“Well, Pap,” Sans grinned, raising an eyebrow as he rubbed the top of his brother’s head. “Looks like you’re back to normal now.”
“Yay!” his brother exclaimed, throwing his arms back up in the air and waggling them.
“Which means,” Sans said, lengthening the words to add to their weight. “That you are now able to go outside again.”
Papyrus gasped, his fallen jaw slowly creeping to a wide smile.
“Yup,” Sans winked. “You definitely seem well enough. You still have to be careful, though. But I don’t see why not.”
Sans stood up, rubbed his brother’s skull once more, then went to the pantry.
“Let’s make some breakfast, then we’ll figure out what we’ll do today.”
Papyrus slid off the bed and was at his brother’s side to help him prepare the meal.
Soon they were sat at their little table, munching on granola cereal with banana slices, chopped nuts, and milk, multigrain toast with mixed fruit jelly, and ice-cold water to wash it all down.
“I don’t want to do anything too strenuous,” Sans said after a sip of water. “So I think we should hold off on training for another couple days.”
Papyrus nodded, his jellied toast still in his jaws mid-bite.
Sans hesitated to suggest what he had in mind, having agonized over it for days and was still unsure if they should do it. But, deep down, he knew it was the right thing to do. He couldn’t avoid the area forever out of fear, and it was better to get it over with sooner rather than putting it off for an indefinite amount of time.
“What...what about...,” he had trouble even saying it. He took a deep breath before trying again. “How do you feel about going back to that area...with the gems and mushrooms?”
He shifted his eyes up from the half-eaten bowl of cereal he was staring at to look at his brother.
Papyrus blinked, then put his toast back on his plate as he swallowed his bite. He looked down at his feet a moment, still wearing the fuzzy red socks his brother had got him when he was recovering. He sheepishly looked up to meet his brother’s gaze, his mouth twitching to voice the question he had been afraid to ask since the incident.
“I mean—” Sans said quickly, eager to fill the silence with words as he concentrated on a banana slice sitting in his cereal. Of course his brother was still too traumatized to want to go back. He knew it was a bad idea, and never should have suggested it. “—you know, we don’t have to, I’m sure there’s something else we could—”
“Sas?”
Sans looked up. His brother’s voice was soft, even timid. He looked like he was on the verge of tears.
“Are you mad at me?” Papyrus asked as his lip quivered. His eyes shone as tears welled up.
“Mad at you?” Sans blinked, stunned that his brother would even think that, having given him no indication of being upset at him. “Wh-why would I be mad at you?”
Papyrus stared at his lap, which caused a few tears to spill. He couldn’t even face his brother as he let loose the worries that had filled his mind since that terrible day.
“Cuz I went inna wata when you said not to, an den I fell in da wata, an I couldn’t get out, an den I fell in da air, an den you hadta come alla way down to find me, an den you got too cold an tired an hurt an den we hadta go alla way up, an...an...an....”
Papyrus’ tears were flowing freely now, his shoulders shaking with sobs. He looked up into Sans’ face, his expression heartbreakingly sorrowful.
“Sas, I’m so sorry I dinin lissen an went inna wata! I’m so sorry! I did very bad, an I’m really, really sorry!”
Papyrus buried his face in his hands and wept loudly. Sans immediately got up and knelt beside him, putting his arms around his little brother to hug him.
“Hey, hey, hey,” Sans whispered soothingly. “Shh...shh.... Pap, it’s ok. I’m not mad at you. I was never mad at you.”
Papyrus clutched his brother, crying hard into his shoulder. He sobbed into Sans’ shirt, which muffled the cries that poured from the depths of his soul. Sans nuzzled into the side of Papyrus’ head gently, shutting his own eyes.
“Papyrus, really,” he whispered into his ear. “I’m not mad. Yeah, I was scared. Really scared. Scared that I lost you. But, no, I wasn’t mad then, and I’m not mad now.”
He pulled back and lifted Papyrus’ chin to look him in the eye. The little skeleton was sniffling, his tear-soaked face jerking slightly from suppressed sobs with every breath.
Sans’ brow was furrowed sadly, but he grinned reassuringly. “More than anything, I am happy that you are ok. I was happy when I found you, I’m happy that you’re better, and I am happy that you’re back here with me, safe and sound.”
“Sas not mad at me for not lissening?” Papyrus mumbled through tears.
“No, I’m not,” Sans said, wiping his brother’s tears with his thumbs. “I know it was an accident, and I know you were only trying to get that gem to help me with food. It was a terrible accident—I know you didn’t do it on purpose.”
Papyrus’ mouth twitched as his tears slowed. “I won’t do it again. Next time, I ask for help, not do dangerous fings by myself.”
“And I will always be there to help you,” Sans said, his soul twinging as his anger towards himself started rising, reminding him of how he failed last time.
“Fanks, Sas,” Papyrus gave a weak smile, wiping his eyes on his sleeves.
“Now, let’s finish breakfast,” Sans grinned, rubbing the top of his brother’s skull playfully. “Then we’ll get ready to go.”
“M’kay,” the little skeleton nodded with a sniffle, then turned back to his meal.
Sans returned to his seat, gave his brother an encouraging smile, and continued eating.
The two brothers finished their breakfast in silence, each lost in their own thoughts.
 -
Sans brought over his brother’s scarf as Papyrus was taking off his thick socks to put on his shoes.
“I washed it,” Sans said, spreading it out to show him. “It’s nice and clean now, and it dried by the fire, so it’s soft again.”
“Fanks, Sas,” Papyrus smiled as his brother wrapped it around his neck.
“I also washed your bag,” Sans said, holding it out for him to take. “Got all the mud and dirt off it.”
Papyrus thanked his brother again as he slipped the rope handle over his head, patting it as it sat at his hip. It was clean and empty—ready to be stuffed with more gems and other findings.
Sans put the paper bag with their lunch in the haversack and checked his pockets. A cloth bag filled with dried fruit was in his jacket pocket, and in his pants pocket was the small emergency packet of dried fruit he had prepared.
Determined not to be caught without dried fruit to replenish his magic like before, he had put a small amount in a piece of parchment paper, wrapped it up tight, then covered it in wax to keep the bundle waterproof. He had been keeping the wax that encased their cheese since first buying them from the market, knowing that it had many good uses, such as this. He then wrapped the waxed package in a few layers of parchment paper to protect his pocket from the wax, tying the bundle up with twine.
Sans shouldered his haversack, the nagging desire to cancel the trip to protect Papyrus grasping at his chest. He shook it off—they would be ok, they would be more careful from now on. He would be more careful from now on.
He held out his hand for his brother, his wide grin hiding the misgivings haunting his mind. Papyrus smiled back, taking his big brother’s hand, and in seconds, they were gone.
 -
Sans hadn’t let go of Papyrus’ hand since he took hold of it in the shelter. They had made their way through many winding paths, searching for a good spot to collect things they needed.
Soon they came across an open area with more land than water, the walls and floors teeming with gems and mouseshroom nightlights. In the narrow waterways that ran along the area were numerous clusters of cattails. Sans smiled with relief—the area had no edges that dropped into nothingness, no waterfalls to sweep little skeletons away. It was a nice, large, safe area enclosed by walls with lots to collect.
After surveying the room and feeling satisfied, Sans let go of Papyrus’ hand. He walked over to one of the waterways and peered into it. He was relieved that he could see the bottom, noting that it would go just above their shins at its deepest.
“Ok, Pap,” Sans said as he took off his shoes. “I’m going to get these cattails. Feel free to grab any gems you find.”
“Okay,” Papyrus nodded, his face serious.
As Sans watched his brother go off to gather gems, dread crept over him.
No, he told himself firmly. He’ll be fine. It’s safer here, he’s learned from the last time, and he’ll be all right.
Sans sighed, exhaling his growing anxiety. He then rolled up his pant legs and made a blue bone knife. The sickening feeling of déjà vu weighed heavily on him.
He will be fine. It’s not like last time. Once this trip is over, I’ll feel better about him being here, because there won’t be any accidents. I just need to get through this. He will be just fine.
Sans took a deeper, more cleansing breath, and turned his attention to the waterway near him. He stepped in, gasping at the chilly waters on his bare feet, and sloshed through to the clusters.
For the first several minutes, he kept looking at his brother. Then he allowed himself to focus on the cattails, cutting through their shoots at the bases.
Papyrus was busy. The area was huge and filled with so much great stuff—too much for his little bag. As soon as he couldn’t put another gem inside, he returned to Sans’ shoes and emptied his bag out next to them. Now that his bag was empty, he went off to fill it again.
Once Sans had collected the cattails from the waterway, he went back to his shoes and the piles of gems his brother had left him. He glanced over at his brother, who was walking in a crouch as he scooped up gems from the ground.
Sans bundled up the cattails with twine and laid them on the ground. He headed over to a different waterway, calling out to his brother.
“Pap! I’m going to be over there now if you need me! You doing ok?”
Papyrus poked his head up and waved.
“M’fine! Lotsa gems!”
“Yeah! You’re doing great!” Sans grinned.
The two brothers spent the day gathering gems, cattails, and mushrooms, placing them with the other bundles and piles, stopping only to wash their hands in the waterway and eat the lunch Sans had prepared—peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, celery sticks, an apple between them, and smoked gouda cheese.
Sans dropped the last bundle of cattails on the huge pile of things that had amassed. He wiped his sweaty brow on his sleeve and blew a sigh of tiredness—although there was no way to tell the hour, he knew it was getting close to dinner time. They had been at their tasks all day, as evidenced by the number of items in front of him.
“Hey, Pap!” Sans called out. “Ready to head back?”
The little skeleton didn’t even answer. He stood up and headed right over, his little bag filled to the brim with gems.
Sans filled his haversack until it, too, was full, then shouldered it.
“I’ll bring you home, then come back for the rest of this,” he said, gesturing to the piles that remained on the ground.
Papyrus nodded. Sans could tell he was tired from the long day, too.
They returned to the shelter, and Sans quickly emptied his haversack. Papyrus started putting the items away—the cattails against the wall, the gems in the basket under the coat hooks, the mushrooms in the large basket in the pantry.
“Ok, I’ll be right back,” Sans said, and then was gone.
Sans only needed a couple more trips to bring all the collected items into the shelter. They hadn’t planned it this way, but it was a very efficient method that Sans decided to adopt for their future exploration trips.
They prepared dinner together and ate, discussing their findings, the goodness of their food, and potential plans for the upcoming days. They were tired from the events of the day, but it was a good tired, a weariness that comes from a productive day’s work, one that left them feeling accomplished and happy.
 -
Sans walked through the streets of the purple cavern’s city in a rather good mood. He had just dropped off his mushroom donations in the domed building. He had apologized profusely for not being able to give anything the last couple weeks as he emptied his haversack fit to bursting with mushrooms into the donation crates, in addition to four large parcels of them wrapped in parchment paper that he had been carrying in his arms. As he rolled up the parchment paper to put in his bag, the charity workers thanked him repeatedly, insisting that he need not feel bad because he had already done more than enough.
He was now off to the tailor’s shop, a hint of excitement tickling the bottom of his stomach. He finally had enough cattail flowers to make pillows for him and his brother, and was going to get the material. No more sleeping on the bumpy, hard haversack for them!
The ferret tailor took the spool of thin, white cotton fabric Sans had picked out and cut a piece to the size he requested. He was even so kind as to cut the fabric in half when Sans told him what he was making with it, saving Sans the trouble. With much appreciation, Sans handed over the gold, put the folded-up fabric in his bag, and bid the ferret a wonderful day.
After his food shopping, Sans went to Ashen’s shop to finish his trip. As he entered, she rose to greet him with her cheery smile. Sans inwardly winced—she was even more gaunt than she was the last time he saw her.
“Sans! I’m so glad you’re here!” Ashen exclaimed with a touch of exhilaration. “I have something for you!”
“Don’t tell me,” Sans gasped as she rounded the counter. “Did you get a writing utensil in?”
“No, no,” she answered, her voice regretful. “Believe me, when I find one, you’ll be the first one to know. No, this is a gift I made for you and your brother.”
She was at one of the two chests in front of her counter. She took the crates off from on top so she could open it.
“Wh-! You...made us...a-a gift?” Sans breathed, stunned. “Ashen, you didn’t have to make us anything—”
Ashen was bent over, shifting things around in the chest. “I know I didn’t have to, but I really wanted to.”
She stood up with something in her wings, hiding it from Sans’ view. She turned around and held it out to him. Sans’ eyes grew wide and his mouth fell open.
It was a blanket.
Sans reached for it, his hands trembling slightly, and could not utter a sound. He took hold of the folded material, feeling its incredibly dense weight. He gently unfolded it and Ashen took the corners to hold it up so he could see it better.
The design was plaid, with violet squares on purple—the colors of the cavern—with white trim. It was extremely soft and thick, and large enough to cover them and their bed. It was beautiful.
“I-I don’t know wh-what to say,” Sans whispered at last. His mouth just could not close and tears welled up in his eyes.
“You don’t have to say anything,” Ashen smiled with the same warmth the blanket offered. “You always have your hood up, and you skeletons don’t have much on your bones to keep you warm, so I know you boys must be chilly in this drafty old cavern. But when I saw you shivering that day....my heart broke, and I knew you needed something to make sure you’re warm at night.”
Sans looked up into Ashen’s eyes, tears slipping down. “You...you have no idea how much this means to me....”
Ashen gave a shudder that made the blanket ripple in her wingtips. She whispered softly. “Sans, I can only imagine what you and your brother have gone through since leaving your home. This is the least I could do.”
She wrapped him up in the blanket as she hugged him with her wings. He nestled into the soft fabric as he returned the hug.
She pulled back and started folding it up. “To make sure it’s extra warm and thick, it’s filled with my own down—not that terrible down those wretched humans make, cruelly ripped from those poor, tortured birds. No, I always collect my moulted feathers for just such a purpose, so it is nice and heavy, perfect for chasing away those shivers.”
She handed him the re-folded blanket and he took it, hugging it against himself. He still couldn’t believe it.
“Ashen, I cannot thank you enough,” he breathed, running his hand along the softness. “This is such an amazing gift.”
He placed the precious blanket in his haversack gently, then turned and gave his friend a proper hug, his arms now free.
“I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it,” he whispered into her peach dress.
Ashen hugged him tightly, the way she used to hug her precious little chicks. “You are so welcome, my little one.”
Sans stayed for a while, chatting with his kind, thoughtful friend about this and that. Before he left, he purchased a bar of soap that smelled like raspberries, and gave Ashen one last hug. The two waved farewell as Sans left.
 -
“Ok, I’m done!” Sans announced later that night.
Papyrus had been helping Sans by taking the empty “water sausage” flowers off the floor and putting them in the compost bag while his brother took the fluff and stuffed it into the pillows he was making.
Sans held up the two finished pillows. They were nice and large, filled out plumply, and the cotton fabric felt cool and smooth to the touch. He put them at the head of the bed, and the two skeletons tested them out. Their deep sighs of contentment and comfort indicated that they were perfect.
They turned to look at each other, smiling.
“How’s yours?” Sans asked.
“Comfy,” Papyrus answered with a happy wiggle of his skull into the pillow.
“Yeah, mine too,” Sans agreed.
He jumped up off the bed and went over to his haversack. “Ok, now I can show you the gift my friend made us.”
Papyrus watched from where he lay, not wanting to remove his head from his soft, new pillow. He knew of Sans’ friend, Ashen, as Sans had mentioned her several times.
As Sans took out the blanket, Papyrus gasped. Sans shifted the fabric scraps off the bed with Papyrus’ help, then shook out the blanket, unfolding it completely, as it landed on the bed. Papyrus’ legs were under it, and he felt the softness as he smoothed it out with his hands.
“Ooh,” he said in awe.
“I know!” Sans exclaimed, running his hands along it. “She made this special for you and me.”
“Aww, dasso nice uv her....” Papyrus took up the blanket and rubbed it against his cheekbone.
“I know,” Sans agreed with a thoughtful smile.
Sans went and got a wide basket he had made and put the fabric scraps into it, setting them aside for future use. They had served the brothers well, having kept them warm through shivering nights, covering them when they were sleeping, and getting them through the rough times when their frozen conditions were severe. Sans placed the basket against the wall across from their bed.
The two brothers got ready for bed, Papyrus made his blue bones illuminating the room disappear, and Sans pulled up their new warm blanket over them as they set their heads down on their new cushy pillows. They were so comfortable that they fell asleep soon after they wished each other good night and shut their eyes.
The magical flame tickled the skeletons with its firelight as it crackled softly within its basin, the shadows capering along the walls like puppets telling a story. Its warmth caressed the open spaces of the shelter and embraced the little pot nearby, gently melting the snow within. It flickered as if laughing with joy, happy that it need not strain itself anymore in a desperate effort to keep the cold off the little ones during the night.

Author’s note:
That blanket sure looks familiar....
Tumblr media
Also, I really want to emphasize that I do not, in any way, condone the use of down. As Ashen said, it's obtained cruelly, with no humane way of obtaining it. Since we don't have chicken monsters willing to give us their moulted down, PLEASE, I urge you, use synthetic down or any other cruelty-free materials for your blankets, coats, etc. :D
On a serious note, tomorrow, Sept 30, is the last day of my Family Medical Leave. I have been staying with my elderly dad and disabled brother, who are both high risk during the Covid crisis, and have been taking care of them since March. Not only will I be returning to work on Oct 1, but I am being forced to move out of the room I'm renting. This means I won't have computer access for a while, especially since public libraries aren't open to the public for the foreseeable future. I am half-way through the next chapter, and my goal before I leave tomorrow is to get as many chapters done as I can so that I can set them to auto-post on AO3 on their update days (there doesn’t seem to be a way to do that on Tumblr, unfortunately). I will also be trying to write the chapters on my phone, but since I'll be spending most of my waking hours working and moving, I'm not sure how I'll be able to get chapters up on time.
I feel really, REALLY bad about this, but I had no idea that I was going to be losing housing again, so there was no way I could account for that. All I can say is that I will NOT be abandoning this story, so please don't think that. It's just going to be rough for a while, and there might come a point where they aren't being updated on the schedule they've been on.
I will be posting status updates on my DeviantArt page, so keep an eye out on there.
As always, I am so grateful for the support you all have given me during this amazing journey with my two darling boys. This isn't the end for them. :)
