Insights on Embarrassment and Shame from 52 Weeks of Reflection Practice “Shame and embarrassment is a universal experience. Yet it can be transformative in our image of ourselves. Surprisingly this has a lot to do with the response of others around us. If we are supported when we feel embarrassed and ashamed, we learn the feelings are normal and processing them with the support of someone else is a healthy way to respond to those feelings. If the child is responded to with more shaming, this intensifies the connection between feelings of shame and their parent. The parent is no longer seen as a trusted ally and support but as someone who may make us feel shame and that's such an uncomfortable feeling, a lot of people try to avoid it. It can lead to avoidance, in order to not experience shame and/or disconnection.” J.
