What to Know Before Transforming Small Spaces into Wine Rooms
Renovating an unused guest closet into an elegant, timeless wine room—serving as both design and function—is a dream come true for any wine lover. In fact, converting closets into wine storage spaces is more popular now than ever. There are a number of other interesting ways to create unique wine storage solutions in homes and commercial businesses out of small spaces—think understairs, bonus rooms, and between open-concept rooms.
What many customers don’t realize is that the smaller the application, the more challenging the project. Overcoming these obstacles typically equates to greater expense and less space, since a small area still needs all the components of a functioning and aesthetically pleasing wine cellar condensed into a smaller footprint. However, armed with a bit of knowledge of what goes into creating a smaller wine display, collectors can avoid the common pitfalls that dash their wine room dreams.
Slow Down and Plan
Like any wine room or display, a small space intended for wine storage and aging needs to be able to maintain a pristine environment. Just because a space is small does not mean it is easier to make airtight. The most effective way to execute a successful application is to plan well before the construction begins. This ensures that the designer, contractor, and home or restaurant owner are on the same page long before anyone has their heart set on a particular outcome.
After helping their clients design and execute wine cellars, rooms, and displays of every size, Wine Guardian’s long-time partner Vineyard Wine Cellars knows a thing or two about the importance of planning.

Do the kids need a little more room to play? You can turn the wall space under the stairs into a little playhouse! How cute is this? #understairs #home #house #littlehouse #storage #forkids #kidsonly #clubhouse #playroomdecor #playroomorganization #playroomideas #designfeature https://www.instagram.com/p/BwvItM4julT/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=6gjlds9tw6h

Stairs...untapped space below the steps!? Just below those steps you go up & down on everyday is usable untapped square footage. Beyond the drywall lies that special room you’ve been dreaming about. Could be a wine cellar, a reading nook, a laundryroom or just creative extra storage. For more visual ideas check out my blog on HeyLucyIamHOME.com or my Pinterest board Under stair ideas. The cherry tree in my "wild" garden Baby crickets on my narcissus. Anyone who knows me, will know that I will have been crying this week! No sad news, just that money has been trickling through my fingers (something I do not like) due to unexpected situations. Monday saw my hob, of 8 months duration, die a death. This is the second one I have owned since I arrived here 20 months ago!! I had kept the receipt this time and managed a full refund however going for a new one I was coerced into buying an induction hob, then I needed new pans!! I did clean up the old pans and advertise them on Marketplace, result on Thursday when they sold. Wednesday morning arrived and lying in bed I thought I am sure I can paint this bedroom. Oh dear did I wish I had not started, I ended up contacting a “bricoleur” I know from the bar and asking for a price. I also wanted 5 light fittings put up and the walls of the bedroom painted. He brought a “friend” who presumably was going to do the work and they bounced a figure of 500 euro. Blimey at that price I will persevere doing a bit at a time. After all, I had all of the equipment all I needed was the labour. I am hoping that I have now arranged the services of an out of work painter, at a price of 17.85 euro an hour. I am also hoping to get a gardener for that price (well it is a bit more as I am wanting to use their equipment) the supervisor has to come and do an assessment. And so I continued unpacking boxes and packing things into my understairs cupboard, it is like a little room and that means loads of storage. Most of my other work this week has been emailing places for further information on progress of Carte de Sejour, Exchange of Driving Licence plus finishing off the change of address on my log book and arranging to get a badge to go to the dechetterie and finding out how to acquire a composteur. My hydrangea is looking good in it’s big pot and I love looking out of the kitchen window and seeing it there. I went and bought the compost to fill the other pot and plant the buddleia in it. I must also make some space in the garden for the plants that Anie brought me last week. I will have to think about where I am going to put my herb garden as I have thyme, chives and mint which, as is usual, has gone berserk in the ground. I have been to the bar a couple of times this week, in fact a couple of times in one day to be more precise. I saw the man that lives a few doors up from me and he is the person who pops into the bar for a coffee on a morning, he was saying how peaceful it was living on this estate. Good news too for when my son, Richard, arrives……..just over the way on an evening there is a pizza van so if we don’t feel like cooking we can pop over and see what delicacies he makes. Oh dear just remembered, more spending will take place next week as the shop rang to say the table and chairs I ordered have arrived. They are to go into the front garden to take advantage of the setting sun with a glass of something, or to have breakfast in a shaded area. Monique called on Monday this week as we had no class on Friday. Her and Jean-Claude went to Paris on Tuesday to visit their daughter and go to the theatre. They came back on Wednesday and unfortunately Jean-Claude has bronchitis now. Monique was going to look for a gite around Munster for us to go and stay for 5 days, We were hoping to go in May and I just hope that Jean-Claude will be well enough by then. Today, I must get myself organised as I am taking the car to be washed. I have not washed it since I got it and I bought it in July 2017!! I am hoping to meet Robert up there so that I do not go daft with the pressure wand. After that I am going to the cinema and then I will be home for the evening. Yesterday I asked myself (yes I talk to myself!) where does the time go. I plan to do jobs and then you turn around and it is evening and you haven’t done half of the jobs you wanted to do. Well, I had better go and have breakfast, get dressed and do a couple of jobs before I make lunch and head off to the car wash. Whatever you are doing today, enjoy. I hope the sun is shining where you are too.
