You know what could really make more misunderstandings happen with tiny Danny...
What if mershark Eyefestation-
I mean, it's not like anyone's first thought about tiny green-eyed fish-snake child is dimension travel. Logically, they're going to look at Sebastian, big fish snake man who is taking care of said tiny child. And they're gonna look at the other creature with bright green eyes, eye patterns, etc.
Look me in the eyes and tell me this kind of thing wouldn't cause so many misunderstandings to people like the expendables and Undershade operatives in general.

Art Advice: The Misconception Behind "Study Realism"
Most people who draw anime/cartoons have, while asking for ways to improve, at one point or another been told to "study realism." A common response to this is, "But I don't want to draw realism!"
But, did you know that the purpose behind this suggestion is NOT so that you draw realism? They're not suggesting you change to a more realistic style. What, then?
Let's look at this through an analogy:
Say you don't know music yet and decide you want to learn how to play the Happy Birthday song. You're not interested in playing anything else, just the HB song, and you haven't started learning anything related to music at this point. OK, that's fine, and now we have our situation set up. Once you've decided this, you set yourself to learning the sequence of notes to the HB song. You practice and practice, and, after a while, you can play it really well without a hitch. After a few years, it starts feeling bland to you, and you ask, "How can I make my HB song better?" And someone tells you, "Learn all the other music notes," and "Study classical and other genres of music." And you reply, "But I don't want to play that type of music; I want to play the HB song!" (And that's FINE! It's valid; it's what you want to do.[*Footnote 1]) But without having learned all the other notes and other types of music, you can't make a remix of the HB song, or an "epic version," or a hip-hop-fusion version; you've capped at the end of the first paragraph of this story.
So drawing anime or cartoons is like playing the HB song, or any one song in our example.
And here's where our misunderstanding comes in:
"Study Realism" DOES NOT MEAN "Draw Realism"
Yes, you'll have to draw it to study it (not only your brain, but also your hand needs to learn the skill), but it doesn't mean that's what all your artwork will look like. It is meant to give you more tools to make your anime and cartoon work stronger, more appealing, and more unique.
How will it do that? The more music notes you know, the more types of music you understand and can play, the more original a remix /version of the Happy Birthday song you'll be able to make - and it will be unique. Because you will be able to take all that diverse knowledge and apply it to your song, making it stand out, and the next time you play the HB song, people will go, "Wow! This is a really cool version!"
So now we can be clear: There is a difference between learning something and performing it. You can perform whatever you choose, but by learning all the things, your performance of your "Thing of Choice" will be stronger.
What, Exactly, Will Studying Realism Teach You, Then?
I. VALUES
If you learn how to paint/shade with a full range of values (by learning realistic shading) that properly depict both volume and lighting, you will have no trouble simplifying that to cel-shading or gradient-shading in your anime or cartoon drawings, because you will at once spot when something is undershaded or the shadows are in the wrong spot.
On the other hand, if you try to do cel- or gradient-shading first, you are way more likely to a) undershade, and b) have an inconsistent light source. And when these things happen, you won't be able to tell *why* your drawing looks "off" or bland.
II. COLOR
By studying realistic coloring, you'll be able to learn how color varies across an item (say, a shirt) that is a "solid color." Example: you're drawing a character with a pink t-shirt, standing in the sun, at the end of the school day. The t-shirt is solid pink, however, the colors on it will vary from orange-ish to purple-gray, with some areas almost a bright red (and that's not even considering items around the shirt that would bounce light back onto the shirt and change its color). But you'll only know this (and how to do it) if you study realistic coloring.
Then you can apply that knowledge to your stylized artwork and make it stand out more.
Painting of a stylized pear, where I studied real pears to understand their coloring and texture. See how studying realism can enhance your cartoon work.
III. MAKE BETTER STYLIZED ANATOMY
By studying and learning realistic anatomy, you will be able to make stylized art that, for example, doesn't have one arm longer than the other, because you will have learned how to measure proportions, even if you don't draw realistic proportions. So that if you decide you want to draw unrealistically long legs (eg: Sailor Moon), you'll be able to make them look good and keep them consistent.
You will also be able to draw figures in any position, because you will have learned how body parts are made up and how they move, as well as foreshortening/perspective. Then, when you go to draw a pose you haven't drawn before, it will be WAY easier.
IV. UNDERLYING SHAPES
Although this is one of the least-mentioned aspects of art-learning, it is, in my opinion, one of the most important, because when you learn to see underlying shapes (the quasi-geometrical shapes that build up a figure), coupled with learning how to measure a form using other parts of the same form as reference (measuring the length of one body part by the number of times another body part fits in it, as mentioned in Section III, above), you will be able to DRAW. (Period.) You won't be able to draw just people. Or just wolves. Or just cats. You will be able to break down a new subject into its building blocks and come up with a very reasonable likeness. And whatever's different, you'll easily be able to make relative measurements to spot why and fix it.
Once you learn to identify underlying shapes and how to measure proportions in anything, you will also be able to pick up and reproduce any existing style without much trouble.
[link to Tumblr post with this artwork]
For example, this was my first time drawing anything Peanuts. I didn't have to do practice sketches for it (though there's nothing wrong with doing that). But I knew, from realism, that to achieve a good likeness, you need to measure body parts relative to other body parts, so I looked at Schulz's drawings and was able to determine: OK, Charlie Brown's head is roughly this shape, his body is so many heads tall, his eyes are this % of the head, the ears are this far in, the arms reach down to here, etc. I knew what to look for.
V. FOR THOSE WHO WANT SEMI-REALISM
If you want to do "semi-realism," you'll have a way easier time of it by learning realism and then stripping it down as much as you like, than by starting off with "100% anime" and trying to build it up without knowledge of realism. People think the latter is easier, because it *seems* less intimidating, but it's like trying to drive to a store you've never been to without knowing its address: you'll be driving around forever trying to find it, and it will be frustrating. What people call "semi-realism" is stylized realism, and you can't really hit it without knowing how realism works.
CLOSING NOTES
It also doesn't mean you should stop drawing anime/cartoons and focus solely on realism for X amount of time - you can do both concurrently. In fact, the most fun way to study realism is to do so on your favorite subjects; you can even turn your reference into your favorite character!
Studying realism is also one of the best ways to help develop your OWN, unique style; one which, when people look at it, say, "Oh, that's [your name]'s work!"
[*]Footnote 1: It is fine as long as you are drawing for yourself. As soon as art is a job and you're drawing for an employer, you have to draw in the style they tell you to. So, in this case, it's to your advantage to be flexible.
I hope this was helpful and helps clear up a common misunderstanding people go through when receiving feedback. 💞

Sebastian Adjusting With The Plourdes
When Sebastian is living with the Plourdes it really is a healing experience for him as he waits to get treatment from Innovation Inc and have his family arranged to meet him. I like to think they keep him in this abandoned shed the have where he can fit and reside in. I do think at first he would have trouble sleeping due to the years of messed up stuff that Undershade did to him. I do think one night he would have night terrors and Renee the matriarch of the family would go to comfort him. She would really remind him of his own mother and it would be a soothing moment for him that he's surrounded by people who really care about him. It helps he's the father of their oldest child's children so they would treat him like family but also be mindful of what he's gone through. They become like a second family to him.

I love careless imperfections in art.
People always praise the perfections and fear the imperfections in their works, and i'm not going to say i don't completely fear imperfections in my works either;
However honestly, the happy and the unlucky accidents in art feel so special to me. The accidental dots that should've been removed, the wonky-choppy lines, wrong colors, rushed anatomy, an area left over/undershaded, forgetting to erase an additional pair of hands from a finished artwork.
It can be jarring, it can be beautiful, but it always feels lived, and that is so wonderful. Even if you got to erase an entire pair of extra hands after you already posted the artwork online.
#does anyone even remember that one time from years ago i forgot to delete a couple of hands from a fully painted artwork#smh#i don't think anyone would remember that tbh but that's alright to me :)#carpet talks#art positivity

demi trainer take 2
i worked hard on color matching this time and i'm happy with the result. honestly i think i did better with the colors than the stock plastic did. and there's decals!
i botched the panel lining but i know what i did wrong. i used the wrong type of varnish and it couldn't stand against the lacquer thinner i used to wipe off excess panel liner. it's cool tho. i'm definitely not the kind of person to dwell on flaws, and i'm definitely the kind of person willing to move on from those flaws 🙃
it's def better than my previous d trainer. undershading each part does so much to give it depth

In the first panel, we immediately get an introduction in what state of mind Max and Karen are in - Max’s stance is wide, open, but not even fully facing Karen, as if he can’t be bothered, whereas Karen’s is rigid and in one place.
Max’s general attitude in almost the entire comic is condescending - something similar to an older bully when you’re a neurodivergent kid - he acts sort of warm and friendly, but he’s tilting his head, he’s amused like he’s being entertained by the antics of a puppy. Chi wrote the scene and the dialogue, and honestly, I made Max an even bigger asshole here by tweaking some of his dialogue drip with false assurance 😅 - him looking to the side in mock consideration, telling Karen some brutal honesty except he’s far more interested in the brutality.
Another design choice for Max is that similar to Trellis, he doesn’t have the “light” in his eyes like Karen and the other characters have - it’s to show that Max is quite jaded/”dead” inside. Also, Max has a light undershade to make his eyes a bit more alive, but when he delivers his threat to Karen, they go full on black.
Twice, Emily is depicted in the light, framing her as some greater savior figure. Whereas, Silas is depicted in a more ominous atmosphere, showing his terrifying power in contrast to Karen, who is pretty much very mundane in comparison.
They’re both standing upright here, but the frame is tilted so heavily that Max appears to be looming over Karen, showing who has more power and intimidation.
And on the final page, we don’t even get to hear a dialogue from Karen even if the comic is meant to be from her pov - instead, even the final shot focuses on Max with his own lines. It’s to show just how much power Max has over the situation - Karen doesn’t even get to have a say, the comic ends on Max’s terms.
That said, even their outfits have a story to tell. Our In-Universe explanation for the outfits is that since Max is an authority, he gets to wear opulent clothes. In turn, since Emily has become an esteemed figure in Cielis, so should her family, and Max provided them with outfits as “befitting their status”. Navin hates it but is forced to wear it, Karen does it because of social pressure.
I set the comic in black and white part out of convenience, part out of symbolism. Gold is the most prominent color in the comic - which is the Elf King’s colors. It’s to show that even when not present, his influence is still all over the story.
Max’s clothes are meant to look more freeing than Karen’s (also I thought it’d be hilarious if he looks like Howl’s moving castle 😂) and to evoke the same feeling of a “prince/noble”. Karen’s gold is meant to emulate shackles - she’s Max’s prisoner, and she doesn’t even know! Also, in the concept art, she looks uncomfortable and the colors don't suit her, because she’s in Max’s colors!
That said, even Max’s layered outfit has metaphorical layers. Max’s gold echoes Karen’s own - they’re in more or less in the same places. Max’s jacket is to show Max’s privileged status, yes, it also shows that EK has him in his pockets, but it’s also just hung on his shoulders, and can easily be discarded. It’s to show Ek doesn’t have complete control as he believes as Max has his own agenda, and that Max doesn’t value his privileged status that much.
However, in the 2nd layer, we see Max has a golden griffin pendant hanging heavy on his neck, not unlike a collar/leash. It’s to show that despite his hatred towards his family name, he’s still burdened by that part of his past, and the gold is to show he’s still stifled serving the Elf King.
And then barely seen, underneath all that, we see a glimpse of a necklace that’s in Layra’s colors. I think that says enough.
For @chi-the-idiot, based off of a scene from their Rewrite, that I just HAD to make a comic about - I hope I did it justice! :
The scene takes place in the context of book 4. The Hayes are allowed to come into the academy to accompany Emily in her seek for help and proper training. However, the days pass and no longer can they tell if weeks or months have gone through. The family becomes distant, having to time to see one another in all this time. When Karen finds Emily in the gardens, looking pale and sleeping from exhertion in the middle of the day, she decides that enough is enough and decides to ask Max if he could ask the council to give them a day off. And although the answer appears to be positive at first, Max starts to question Karen's reasoning...
Stuff about Max?? In my blog?? It's more likely than you think.
Would add some notes tomorrow, am tired xD

You know what could be a fun crossover? Roblox: Pressure and Subnautica.
I mean, presumably when Z-13 escaped from transport and started the whole lockdown, he was in transport for a reason. Maybe getting transferred to a new site seeing as he only got the kill on sight orders after the breakout.
And if it's say, in a world with space travel, said transport could definitely be a ship.
Alternatively, the Hadal Blacksite is where it is because it's undiscovered- Undershade scooped it up as soon as they could. So, hypothetically, the Blacksite could also be on 4546B.
There's a lot of potential for different takes and ideas.

TMI Tuesday
Good morning, Tumblr!
First things first, everybody go vote in the Chipped Cup Awards! The mods have put in a lot of work to take over from the TEAs--and we Rumbelle authors have put in a lot of work with our fics! Let's pat each other on the back and celebrate the best of the best.
Chapter 25 of Dark Mistress (Salvation) is ready to go on Friday. This is one of those chapters that both went according to plan, but also surprised me. Parts of it were exactly what I'd been imagining for the past year or so. But there's also something major that I... didn't plan, but should have. I can't wait for you guts to read it, so I've got snippets for anyone who asks!
(There are less than 10 chapters left in Dark Mistress, guys! Less than six months of real time! I'm going to begin the bittersweet process of saying good-bye to a story.)
In other news, my surprise new fic On the House posted last Friday to rave reviews. Apparently people think this is going to be angsty? Can't imagine what about my previous work or the premise of the story would lead to that expectation.
I will say I've been missing some of the 2013-era Rumbelle fics, and I'm trying to channel some of that vibe into On the House. It's not just "angst" or "darkness" or "grit," though all of those aspects are involved. But there was this layer of poetic gloom that hung over a lot of early Rumbelle stories. It's like how Batman: The Animated Series was animated on black paper, so even scenes in daylight had these dark undershades. (My theory is that this is because we didn't know how the Rumbelle story was going to end, so we kept delving into worst-case scenarios as a way to prepare for the worst.)
That's what I'm going for. If I succeed remains to be seen.
The point is, I am 2,800 words into Chapter 2 of On the House. Unless things go very, very badly, I should be able to post it next Friday, 2-17. I'm having a blast with this chapter, but I'm also getting in my own way a bit. At least three or four times I've ended a writing session knowing that the last bit I'd written didn't work, so I'd have to go up a few lines and see where everything went off the rails. (See, this is what happens when I don't plan a story out a year in advance.) But it is coming together and I can't wait to show you more!
So stop by my inbox and ask away! I can't wait to hear from you. I hope you all have a wonderful day.
My ask box is here
On the House is here

Edd Bundy (Roblox Pressure Oc)
Name: Edward Bundy
Ethnicity: Caucasian-American
Age: late 30's
Sexuality: Straight
Headcannon Voice Actor: Paul Scheer
Relatives: Genene Bundy (mother); Herman Bundy (father); Vickie Bundy (sister)
Occupation: Surgeon (formerly); Prisoner
Residence: Raiford, Florida (formerly); █████████ High-Security Prison
Personality: He is a sadistic and malicious sociopath who relishes on causing pain and death to others. He has a twisted interest in dissecting organisms so he can see inside of them and mess with them. He is especially interested in being able to dissect the inhabitants of the Hadal Blacksite, especially Sebastian since he can have the freeway to kill and dissect him in the most painful way. He doesn't view Sebastian as human and treats him like he's just a simple fish even if he knows he was mutated. He also loves creeping out his fellow prisoners by describing how he relished in killing his victims and will be happy to make more. He also has a love of tasting his victim's blood and often says they have a distinct flavor. He grows to have a creepy fascination with Evangeline that borders violence and sexual. Background: Originally a surgeon from Florida he had a history of killing his patients while making it look like an accident until the hospital he was employed by eventually caught on and he was sent to prison. He would serve 93 days of his intended long sentence until he was given a chance to have his crimes pardoned. He would work for Undershade to retrieve the crystal at the Hadal Blacksite which he happily agreed.
* His name is a combination of Ed Gein and Al Bundy.
* His sadism stems from childhood where he began playing surgeon with little animals.
* He is inspired by Cioccolata.
* He has an interest in dissecting Sebastian due to his status as an experiment.
* He is the most hated Expendables of the group.
* Sebastian is legit creeped out by him.
* Mr. Lopee who himself is a pillar of mortality thinks of him as a disgusting piece of trash.
* Like Mr. Shade, his soul cannot be redeemed with angel's blood.
* Evangeline eventually kills him to protect Sebastian when he bragged about wanting to have a chance of killing him. Mr. Lopee finally decides it's better he wasn't brought back alive.
* He calls Sebastian "It".
* He also doesn't mind the idea of killing his fellow prisoners in Blacksite under the excuse of it being an accident and getting away with it. So, the other prisoners are wary of him. And the fact that they can revive has taken the joy out of it and because they could still get back at him when they come back alive.
* His family keeps a distance from him due to his reputation. His sister is married with kids.
* He favors the blood of young women and itches to cut Evangeline to taste her blood.
* He is based on more sadistic interpretations of the Expendable where they actually committed their crime.

Ok that makes things like
200% easier.
Ok so, basically
Theres 2 ways i shade "hair"
1 is for fur (non-glossy)
The other is for. Human hair. (Glossy) for human hair. You make a new layer, select your base color (unless its white, if its white, select either grey or a darker, saturated color. (Red for example)) and set the layer to "multiply" (the same place add and overlay and all that jazz are) and, use a *faded* brush. (A marker brush, watercolor brush, those sort of brushes. Or a dedicated shading brush if you find one on the net) and, depending on where your light source is, draw the shadows the same way you would any normal object, but make sure to leave unshadeddspace between the top and buttom of the hair, the only hair that should go fully shaded is hair that gets 0 light. (The hair below the neck, for example) make sure to get EVERY nook and cranny. It doesnt matter if you Overshade. But it DOES matter if you undershade. Adjust the opacity to make the shading seem more natural, then. You repeat this process again, but now you focus on the *hard* shadows. For example in the onyx drawing i did you see that the darks to the *right* of his hair are darker than the *left* those are "hard shadows" because they are places that get No light. And remember that hard shadows always go On top of light shadows (the first layer we did)
After that, you change your color to either pure white, or a dark grey. And make a new layer. This time either on "dodge" or "add." (Add is lighter than dodge) then, you (very gently) go over all of your "unshaded" areas that are most in contact to your light source. For my onyx drawing this is the top and bottom of his front hair.

So I said I wanted to pull out the stops. That means...
After market parts! A photo-etch set and a transparent resin bridge part (the transparent part will be important in the future!)
Working on the bridge. I really want to make it look like the real thing.
Obviously we paint it black
Yeah... looks just like the real thing...
You know what close enough.
Test fitting in the top saucer. Also I did the undershading. I think I'm getting better at controlling the airbrush. It looks splotchy but that won't matter once it's painted over.
Looks good! I mean it looks a bit blurry in the pic, but in person it looks good. Scraped away paint so that light can shine thru the screens and consoles.
Oh yeah I'm lighting the model up. All the stops.
