The last high fire of the 2022 year is back home. I feel so proud of these pieces, and see where I want to go further in terms of vessel shape, surface texture, and grouping in 2023.
A ramen bowl, a planter, a serving bowl, a ringed vessel, a small bud vase, stacking plates, and other vessel explorations.
All were thrown with Stoneware 48 Clay and fired in Cone 10.

Mini Art Lesson   Tuesday, April 21, 2020
This week, we're taking a closer look at the materials and design elements of this Wine Jar with Fish and Aquatic Plants, made in China during the fourteenth century. Children ages 2-6 can follow along with step-by-step instructions to learn about habitats while creating a home for their favorite animal. For children 7 and up, we'll explore chemical reactions by making our own watercolors and paining our own nature scenes!
FOR AGES 2–6:   LET’S PLAY
Today, we’ll work on building a setting for animals with our family! Take a close look at Wine Jar with Fish and Aquatic Plants and discuss the concept of habitat and home. What do you notice about this animal’s habitat? Where do you think the fish’s home is?
Tumblr media
Step 1: Find an old shoebox, small cardboard shipping box, or even a paper bag for your child to decorate. Grab any art materials like markers, paper, scissors, and glue or tape. Optional materials include, straws, popsicle sticks, or even pens or pencils!
Tumblr media
Step 2: With your child, decide what animal to put in your box and discuss the habitat you will create. You can create your own animal or get a stuffed animal! Feel free to also sketch out your design together.
Tumblr media
Step 3: Color the interior (and exterior if you’d like) in a way that reflects the habitat of your chosen animal. You can also tape on paper in different colors.
Tumblr media
If you have additional items, try to mix up the materials with other items around the house!
Tumblr media
Step 4: If you’re using a stuffed animal, add your animal to the environment! Use your setting to create stories about your animals, and enjoy continuing to make stories in the days and weeks to come!
Tumblr media
Bonus: If you’re making an animal puppet, cut out the sketch of your puppet, and use popsicle sticks, straws, or even pens to create your animal with tape! Hint: tape them from the top.
Tumblr media
Thank you to Filippa Christofalou and Orestis for working on this project!
FOR AGES 7+:  LET’S CREATE
This jar was created with clay that was dug out of the earth and painted with glaze made by grinding down minerals. For our project, let’s also use some natural materials to make art materials of our own!
You’ll need:
A pot
Water
Cabbage
Lemon
Baking powder
Step 1: With the help of a grown up, cut up the cabbage and boil it for 20-30 minutes until the water is reduced by about half.
Tumblr media
Step 2: Drain the liquid and pour it into three separate containers. Then, add a few drops of lemon juice to one and two teaspoons of baking powder to the other. A chemical reaction causes the liquid to change colors!
Tumblr media
Step 3: Let’s use our colorful liquid to do some watercolor painting! What things in nature inspire you? Let’s paint a scene that includes our favorite animals and plants.
Tumblr media
Bonus: What other natural ingredients can you use to make paint? You can try coffee, tea, spinach, carrots, strawberries, and more. Experiment and make a rainbow!
FOR TEACHERS, CAREGIVERS, AND PARENTS  Access a free teaching guide to this collection highlight, featuring questions for viewing and other great activities and lessons.
We’ll be back next Tuesday with another Mini Art Lesson! In the meantime, let us know what your like to see or learn!

Dish (Tabaq) with Scale Pattern and Serrated Leaves, Islamic, 1550, Art Institute of Chicago: Asian Art
The central design of this dish features two opposing leaves surrounding a central three-lobed (trefoil) shape, all set against a fish-scale motif in turquoise and blue. The design of the leaves is in the so-called saz (reed) style, referring to the reed pen used by Persian and Turkish artists to create black-ink drawings. Early drawings in this style depict dragons and phoenixes in combat surrounded by blossoms and feather-like leaves. The rim of the vessel contains a classic "wave and rock" pattern, inspired by Chinese ceramics. At the beginning of Iznik pottery production, Chinese porcelain exerted a large influence on the style and colors of Iznik tiles. However, by the late 16th century, when this dish was created, Iznik potters had developed their own distinctive style of colorful floral and abstract motifs that went beyond their original Chinese influence. Gift of Martin A. Ryerson Size: 6 × 30.7 cm (2 3/8 × 12 1/16 in.) Medium: Fritware with underglaze painting in blue, turquoise, red, and black

mornings work underglazing and glazing. I used the pictures i took of the unfired clay pieces as a stencil. I held them down while i traced around the outline with a ceramic pen. Once I had a line I went over it again till it was nice and dark. I underglazed white and left pieces just bare. I layered up 3/4 times and gave them a 10sec dip in the glaze.

Ceramic bell, I received new blue underglazes that I’m dying to try and will make some more ceramic pieces inspired by my aquatic escapes this summer. ( I get very excited about swimming in the ocean after 12 long years in darwin where sea swimming is not possible for most of the time) … also in this on the background a black and white ink drawing that was the very last collaboration I did with my father before he passed away 5 years ago. It started with a line randomly in a page and we took turns adding to it. He was already very ill when we did this and wasn’t easy fir him to hold a pen back then, his sketches were amazing and I’m so lucky that he left me an entire sketch book full of his drawings the last time he visited me in Australia. Anyway enjoy your Friday! . . . #ceramicbell #wales❤️ #lookingforthewales #handmadeceramics #artuststudio #illustrationnow #illustratedceramics #inkdrawing #isabel_lopes_artist #adelaidemade #adelaideartist #seasideliving #coastallivingstyle #southaustralianbeaches #ceramicmagazine #australiancontemporaryartist #weekendvibes #fatherdaughtertime (at Aldinga Beach) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZPzq1BBVef/?utm_medium=tumblr

FMP Progress Week 11
Another busy and productive week- so happy that I can see the light at the end of the tunnel now!
On Monday in ceramics I tried throwing left handed ( reversed the wheel direction). I found this much easier and happily made 2 pots , 1 wasn't quite centered, but I was very happy with the second. As there had been a power cut in Street that morning we also had a visit from the College photographer who took pictures while I was throwing- not offputting at all!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The pots were left overnight to dry enought to be able to turn and shape them. I glazed the teracotta speech bubble piece with a paint on transparent glaze ( 2 coats on back 3 on front) and put on pins ready to fire. I made the creative decision to glaze back after the discussion on how to mount the final piece and felt that glue would stick better to a glazed surface to attach brackets for hanging.
The afternoon was spent in Sculpture deciding on fonts for the skull piece mirror writing. I used PowerPoint to try different fonts and then printed and traced the chosen font (Apple Chancery italic) onto the back of the skull. I then used fineliner pens ( 0.8 and 0.5 mm) to write on the skull and added gold leaf to the eye sockets after applying size (glue) to the area I wanted to gild. I next measured and cut the piece of linen canvas gifted by a fellow student to make a mask, following the template paper pattern I had made earlier, and drilled holes in a mount block I had made at home from a reclaimed fence post that had been planed, sanded and painted black. I cut a piece of metal rod to the required length, polised it and drilled two holes in the plaster skull at 2 different angles to see which worked best.
Tumblr media
On Tuesday I turned and shaped the two bowls made on Monday, practicing how to use turning tools in the reverse orientation and also learned that I used the wrong shape tool to get the shape I wanted!
I played with textural effects on the inside and outside of the 2 pieces cutting a rim and decided to use spare ceramic transfer words on the inside of the small bowl.
I found a broken tile in the style of Rennie Mackintosh that had been in our previous home, and wanted to replicate the style on my bowl so I piped on a rose outline with white earthenware slip using a fine-nozzled stopper bottle. I later added velvet underglazes to decorate the inside and outside of both bowls.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made further progress with the skull sculpture on Wednesday and fitted the linen mask made at home using pins. I need to get nice gold pins to finish it. I also bought a mirror from a local hardware shop to display with the sculpture- it is bevelled and perfect for showing the writing, but may need framing better as it is made of plastic.
Tumblr media
The music file was tested in the tree 'headspace' and it works, and I started the build, using recycled cardboard boxes from music equipment for our home studio (another connection to creativity).
Tumblr media
At the weekend- I spent Saturday writing up my notes and sketchbook, and Sunday finishing painting the canvas tryptych- inspired by quote from Ruth Lanius at a disassociation after trauma webinar that said to heal traumatised clients you need to help them transform from a Larva into a Butterfly. I thought this tied together the project nicely with the Reminiscence learning Chrysalsis moments theme and the concept of Art as a Healing tool. I painted a Larva on one small canvas and used a Butterfly wall frieze collaged onto a second small canvas. Also added more paint to the self portrait with abtract paint glued onto it, but struggled to get the skin tone right. Happy with final results and these will work well with teh teracotta speech bubble piece capturing the comments from the survey on what creativity means.

I've moved my desk! 90° to the side wall where I have some little shelves, it means my video is not back-lit by the windows and I think is giving a better quality as a result? I actually shot the entire illustration of this jug from beginning to end in time-lapse - five-and-a-half hours' work reduced to twenty-odd minutes! I'll stick in on Vimeo or Utube if anyone's interested. 🐾 This clip shows me outling my illustrations of a pair of GSPs (German Shorthaired Pointers) - they're lovely dogs and are both working and show dogs. It's a commissioned, custom pitcher and I've been working with my customer to show both dogs equally, in action and in their standing poses. The composition is all-important, so I sketch out on the leatherhard clay the position of the dogs using a pale wash of underglaze until I'm happy. 🐾 The only preparations I do before this is a very simple pen sketch 'design'. I like to leave most of the work until I'm on the clay, I hate tracing or copying which always seems to kill a drawing - since I was a child I've thought that (I know plenty of highly accomplished artists do use tracing techniques - it's just not for me). 🐾 This custom jug was ordered through my webshop and photos of the dogs themselves and relevant information sent through, I always respond quickly to custom requests. At the moment some international deliveries are experiencing some understandable delays at some US airports and I'm thanking all my customers for their continuing support and, where necessary, patience. UK deliveries are pretty much unaffected. In all countries, delivery men and women are clearly doing an exceptional job of keeping the world turning - hugely important to all craftspeople and their micro-businesses 👍 (at London, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_Rjb5ijJLZ/?igshid=2jqk6h77ewe7
