ironically enough, some people claim he stole his idea for the fountain from elsa von freytag-loringhoven. in my eyes that theory has been completely disproven due to those letters both being taken out of context and willfully mistranslated. but the fact that it could have been a stolen idea? what would that mean for the piece? would that mean it's not art? would that undo the influence it had on the art world for more than a century? theft does not negate art.
i personally don't like ai art, but i don't think that it's ontologically evil, or that it isn't art, because i believe anything can be art. the theft of living artists' work by these sites does make me uncomfortable, just as if duchamp stole the urinal from either freytag-loringhoven or from a pub, that would make him a bit of a dick. he'd still be an artist, though.
it’s awesome that we’re doomed to hear the same reactionary opinion that art is only art if the artist puts work into it for the rest of time
#the main reason i'm not anti ai art is bc the only meaningful action that can be taken to combat ai art is to expand copyright law. i'm for#the abolishment of copyright law bc i am for the abolishment of capitalism and copyright is intended to protect artists from exploitation#under capitalism. if we get rid of capitalism then we can get rid of copyright too. copyright law is so often misused by capitalist#corporations to the detriment of small artists and individuals. think abt YT's copyright system being shit. or how awful record companies#are. or how disney keeps remaking old ips of classic fairytales in order to keep the rights to those stories. expanding copyright will not#help you bc copyright already doesn't help you in our broken system. so if we get rid of our current system? then after that copyright#becomes obsolete. those are just my thought though. apologies if any of this is rambly. i just woke up and had to respond to this bc it#annoyed me lmao. great points as always nick!!

Saw great pro artist takes on twitter today regarding ai art
Obv ai people hate them, but sadly basically all artists I see talk about this issue are opposed to anti capitalism so none of these get any traction or support
Like the idea is there is already a problem in how art gets approached that needs to be fixed, which can only be done with systemic change
AI art ist just one of the many results of that systemic change bot having taken place. Still broader discussions focus only on getting rid of ai art, or sometimes ai as a whole (which is more sensible in my opinion but I digress), instead of looking at any trends we see within our legal system and the general treatment of artists. It's mainly big artists making anti ai statements because they've found a stable platform to monetize their work under capitalism that then pull support from lots of smaller artists who either are uninformed and manipulatable or dream of achieving the same success which is a) unsustainable long term and b) unrealistic for most.
Edit: ah I forgot the video that was linked in the tweets. Just for hammering home that intellectual property and copyright weren't invented for writers, painters, or other artists, here it is

Patents, Trademarks, Copyrights, Trade Secrets Protect Your Invention!
Patent numbers are provided sequentially, beginning with the number one. It took 75 years for the United States Patent as well as Trademark Office (USPTO) to provide patent number 1,000,000.
What does this indicate? Simply, there is more creativity since at any time in history. The old saw that "there is nothing brand-new" is entirely wrong. There have never been so many people as well as entities producing novel, special items, innovation and also services, and so driven to commercialize these inventions. Much more licenses and also business owners attempting to market their items is indicative that there is even more competition for effective positioning.
To try to market an invention without covering the work with the shield of patent, hallmark, copyright, or profession secret protection indicates a pointless method that will certainly not be successful. Investors, licensees, and also capitalists demand the defense that these intellectual property products manage. You can also get help with invention
He never prepared for that Coke would become a global comfort item, the soft beverage. The most intelligent point John Pemberton ever before did, besides inventing Coca-Cola, was to take care of the secret formula for the syrup as a Profession Trick. To this day, the Coca-Cola Bottling Business zealously shields the active ingredients as well as chemistry involved in generating the base syrup that is the significance of traditional Coca-Cola.
Large Kid Restaurants protects the dish for the tartar sauce that goes on their sandwiches, and that numerous customers buy by the container and take home. McDonald's doggedly secure the process their dining establishments use to cut, prepare, and also season their French-fries. William Wrigley was just as manic in keeping secret his method for supplying powerfully flavored, resilient, chewing periodontal.
Trade Tricks typically are not able to safeguard patent security. The novelty of the Trade Key is in the mixing, chemistry, or chronology utilized to deliver the finished item.
If your item has the possible as well as requirement to end up being a Profession Secret you will certainly desire to comply with numerous very standard actions. As you finalize your growth work hallow all of the steps necessary to deliver the finished item you wish to maintain the key in a dish or recap document.
The Trade Secret gains unbelievable property value when your item comes to be a market success. Offering a business developed around a fully secured Trade Secret tremendously boosts the value of the company. Coca-Cola, Betty Crocker, Duncan Hines, Oil of Olay, Schlitz, Dom Perignon, Ben, and also Jerry's, as well as Estee Lauder's Young people Dew are just a couple of instances of renowned brands constructed around a Trade Secret.
A Hallmark is essential in developing a brand understanding of an item. Use a Patent Attorney when approaching the extremely specialized area of seeking Hallmark protection. I have never seen a business owner efficiently browse the extremely complicated functions of the USPTO. I HAVE seen lots of efforts to deal with the procedure, all causing total failing.
The material of a Hallmark can include a personalized, determining symbol, stylized trademark name, and a branding declaration. Nike uses the well-known slash (icon) the Firm's name (identifiable stylized font) and "Just Do It!" (branding statement). Include all of the aspects that the public will certainly identify in your Hallmark application.
Pat's Cheese Steaks in Philly is a regional service that has gained great popularity as well as brand recognition and protects their brand with a trademark. Chanel, the French haute couture brand name, is internationally admired and also the traditional "C" that adorns every system of Chanel item is one of the most acknowledged brand name symbols in the globe.
Having a Trademark provides a commitment to police as well as safeguard the assigned mark. The incorporation of (TM) on every unit of product is vital. Once more, get in touch with an attorney. Trademarks can inadvertently become abandoned and also shed.
Copyrights are utilized to protect intellectual property. We always copyright the guidelines and/or the play attributes of the game.
Lately, Dan Brown, the author of the hugely successful publication "The Da Vinci Code", was suited for plagiarism by the British authors of a book concerning the search for the Holy Grail. The search for the Holy Grail is main to the story of the "The Da Vinci Code". There are full collection racks dedicated to the search for the magical Holy Grail. And yet, throughout the run-up to the film release of "The Da Vinci Code" a lawsuit including this copyright was begun. Brown and also his author intensely protected their legal rights under their Copyright protection. They won complete vindication from the court.
Producers of intellectual web content buildings (motion picture workshops, record labels, book authors) are extremely hesitant to approve unrequested proposals for evaluation. Legal activity is raging in the area of intellectual residential or commercial property. We all bear in mind things that we saw, listened to, or experienced from the remote, however dim past.
Mattel, as well as Hasbro, will not review ANY outside toy entries. Is it not accidental that there has not been an advancement plaything introduction in years from Hasbro or Mattel? This is one of the regrettable by-products of a litigious society, the limits put on required technologies. Secure your intellectual property with a Copyright.
I suggest to my clients, before investing a cent on a patent attorney, that they perform a brief search at the USPTO.Gov web-site by giving all evident keyword phrases applicable to their invention. The comprehensive search will validate the capacity for efficiently acquiring patent protection.
Patents are the favored style of security for many inventors as well as entrepreneurs. Patents (energy) are very powerful representatives of protection versus killers, thieves, as well as rip off musicians. Not to be a boor, but, again, use the solutions of a patent attorney. I am always impressed and amused at the number of individuals I think they can efficiently create, offer extremely certain 3-D CAD art, file, manage USPTO arguments and also move the patent through the labyrinth of a Federal Government administration. Go Figure! They waste time and cash and also usually negate any kind of possibility to have a re-filed patent efficiently obtain a patent number.
The Provisional Patent declaring is a letter that is positioned on data with the USPTO. The Provisionary filing encourages the USPTO of the description of the product you are trying to establish. The letter has a 1-year life cycle and must be prolonged with an official patent declaring (Utility or Layout) or the item is left forever.
We utilize the Provisional Patent as a completely lawful way to state that an item in early-stage development is Patent Pending. A Provisionary Patent filing also makes it possible for the business owner to have a one-year time window to examination as well as scale market action to the invention.
A rival only requires to change a layout aspect, cosmetic attribute, or include a craftsmen version to get rid of a Style Patent. For products that have the real commercial capacity, however, can not get over prior, existing item art to get a Utility Patent, the Layout Patent offers one possibly crucial benefit: the alternative to keep a product suspended in ongoing Patent Pending status.
We have done this for some celebrations. A simple modification to the preliminary declaring indicates that a politician at the USPTO needs to locate the file, pick it up, put the modified filing information as well as re-log the filing. Therefore, the filing goes to the back of the line and we gain months more Patent Pending defense.
When a product is in the Patent-pending mode it has the best defense. When a patent number is provided the clock starts ticking on the effective life of defense and information of the novelty of the trademarked product comes to be public understanding.
By maintaining a product in Patent pending limbo we keep the attributes shrouded from any public understanding. This usually leads to a first to market advantage as well as competition is only aware that there is a Patent pending.
The Utility Patent is exceedingly useful, both as a safety guard against competition and also as an organization possession. The invention that obtains an Energy Patent number from the USPTO is the possibility of a passion for licensees, companions, financiers, as well as equity capital. Many trademarked items (Utility), however, never make it to market. We often see unique inventions, and also hence patent possible, yet not a business, or need, or valuable. Most of us understand a mad scientist or more, with limitless layouts, inventions, as well as patents, none of which are ever going to be a market success.

The reason why I wanted to ignore the feasibility of such a change is not because I don't think it's an important discussion, but rather because I think both changing copyright law in such a drastic way and getting rid of it entirely are both incredibly difficult tasks, and my focus was more on understanding why abolishment of copyright law seems to be a more popular proposition than reforming the law in a way that would allow for the ideal scenario presented by that-dumb-moth. I didn't want to get hung up on which seems more feasible without first knowing if an ideal reform exists at all.
As for the self-employed issue, I don't think it'd be too difficult to come up with a sort of legal contract that allows another party to use your work without giving up ownership. Something that would allow creators to create works that can be used by a second party without transferring ownership. The second party can employ creators to create something, and in return, they get a guaranteed contract to have the rights to use said thing (possibly however they want) without stripping the rights of the creators to also use that thing.
Under our current system, would anyone seeking such a contract find work? No, but that's why the copyright law would have to be reformed first---to ensure that the creator of a work always has certain rights to their created works. No company could (legally) strip a creator's rights to use the works they created, and thus could not selectively hire based on whether or not they'd be able to have exclusive rights to said works.
As for the abuses of power you mentioned, I think those might play out differently if being the creator of a thing gave any actual rights rather than being mostly a title with little to no legal benefits. Or I'm severely misunderstanding something here (which, if I am, correction is very welcome).
I do understand that this is ideologically opposed to and incompatible with capitalism, but in the event that capitalism is finally abolished and replaced with socialism, I see no reason why copyright law ought to be fully abolished with capitalism rather than reformed and improved for a better system. (If you're not socialist, though, this point obviously doesn't apply)
But if that ideal does and can exist within a socialist framework, my question then becomes: is there a way to reform copyright law in that direction right now to measurably improve it within the current system? And, if we have indeed established that that ideal exists in theory, then I am willling to ask: is it more feasible to introduce that reform of copyright law, or to outright abolish it, considering that both run against the capitalist system we live in?
(Though, to be honest, that question is far enough outside my realm of confidence that I don't think it'd be very productive for me to discuss; this conversation alone is already far enough out that I'm really only comfortable asking questions rather than making statements)
[person who clearly thinks they are making a really awesome burn that makes them look good voice] at least nazis believe in copyright law

A Foreword : Skip if you wish
This is a short excerpt from a large (OVER 140,000 words) novel named SEA DRAGON’S GIFT. Kurin is speaking with her friend and mentor, Blind Mecat, a Great Sea Dragon.
The story takes place on a world where all of the land was sunk deliberately by a civilization living in the depths of the sea. There is no dry land anywhere on the world of Sea.
That was done 2.5 million years ago. The Great Sea Dragons are still trying to get the ecological damage under control. Part of this effort is the giant Coriolis Storms. They serve multiple ecological purposes and are necessary to the survival of life on Sea.
It is important to note that any creature called by a familiar Earthly name is NOT IN ANY WAY actually that creature. It has been named for a superficial resemblance and nothing more.
When referring to the world, Sea is capitalized. If referring to the ocean in general it is not.
The world of Sea has three moons. They are large Wohan, middle sized Carsis and small Dorac.
///////////////////////
Nestled securely in the powerful white tentacles of her friend and mentor, the Great Sea Dragon, Blind Mecat, Kurin asked, “Would you tell me something, Mecat?”
Tolerantly, Mecat replied, “If I can, Little Fish. You know that there are things that I cannot tell you and others that I do not know.”
Seeing that her foster daughter might be busy for a while, Captain Tanlin settled herself comfortably on the gray-green laminated Strong Skin rail of the Grandalor. She casually gripped a standing rigging line for better balance and composed herself to listen, Sea’s never-ending wind playing in her hair. She enjoyed Mecat’s tales too.
Kurin said thoughtfully, “We use the term “dry land” to mean stupid or crazy. You told me that the First Men came to Sea looking for a real dry land. A place where the bottom comes right up out of the water, high enough to become dry and stay that way. Is that right?”
The Great Sea Dragon’s blind eyes turned to face her snout where Kurin was perched and replied, “That is so, Little Fish. I heard them say so myself. Why do you ask?”
Young Kurin wrinkled her forehead as she composed her questions. “Was there ever any place like that anywhere on Sea?”
Blind Mecat said softly, “Yes, Kurin, there really was. That was a long time ago. About two and a half million years past the last of the land sank beneath the waves. It was not an accident of nature, either.”
Surprised, Kurin blurted out, “Not natural? What happened to it?”
“Stupidity,” spat Mecat.
“We had politicians and a planet whose seas were crowded to the safe limits of the ecology … and a bit more. Those beings looked about them for a way to get more space for the people who were the source of their political power. Immortality of a sort had just been made possible for the few, and the many were clamoring for it. If people were to live longer, they would need more room.
“They found the space that they needed in the land. Land took up almost a third of the planet surface. All that we needed to do, they said, was get rid of the land, and we could use the shallower seas where it had been to support many more of our kind.
“Some of us, who were actual students of the ecology, were opposed to the plan from the start. We were shouted down. They said so what if the air could run freely over the sea, without the land to stop it? We lived in the deep water. The systems were not connected or, if they were, it had to be a tenuous connection. We were ignored and they went ahead with their plans.
“It is easier to start some things than it is to stop them. Sinking the land was like that. It was disastrously easy to begin. The land was like icebergs, floating on the crust of the planet. It was deepest under the mountains. The scientists and engineers who worked for the politicians made hot spots form under the mountains to melt them away from beneath. Slow but mighty convection currents in the mantle of the world melted away the mountains. That broke up the continents and large islands. In the end, those hot spots swallowed up even the fragments.
“It was a rough and dangerous time, filled with earthquakes and tsunami. These were predictable events and mostly our people were cleared out of the way of the immediate dangers.
“By three million Gatherings ago, they knew it was a mistake. Two and a half million Gatherings ago, the last land sank. By then, even the stupidest of our people finally saw that the land did more for us who lived in the oceans than most had realized. Not having it nearly destroyed us and our world.
“The atmosphere began to separate into bands of high speed wind. Some of those winds were up to five hundred miles per hour. Besides that, clouds shut out the sun. The world was covered by a single monstrous storm. So what? We lived in the calm depths.
“The drag of a five hundred mile per hour air current is immense. Dangerous currents began to form in the seas. The waves were so fierce that they would seize and batter to death any who were unwary enough to get near the surface.
“Even in the depths, we need oxygen to breathe. The photoplankton on the surface could not get sunlight. The wind waves stirred it down to depths where it could not have made the vital oxygen even if it could get sunlight. Much of it died. And so did most of our people.
“I admit that even we who had expected serious problems had not seen the extent of the disaster. The shallow seas where the continents had been were uninhabitable and much of the rest was going. Our people had begun a process of mass extinction.
“We who did foresee the catastrophe had already moved to the polar regions. Those were the only places left getting any sunlight at all. The few survivors of my kind retreated to the north and south poles. The situation was desperate. Frath had predicted the atmospheric disaster in detail. They had not believed him even when it was beginning. There were a few others of us who had foreseen various other aspects of the disaster.
”Many of our people, especially the politicians, wanted to blame us for the destruction. Their reasoning was that we caused the calamity by not opposing the majority effectively. We responded by forming an Ecological Council and telling the others that they only had two courses. Cooperate or die.
“A surprising number did choose to die. They thought that if we saved the biosphere, we would have to save them too. They were wrong.”
Kurin thought the story over for a bit and said, “So, you need to work with the things that are real. What you want them to be might not be good at all if you ignore what is real.”

For a "free economy" to work, there would have to be absolutely no copyright law, and a stringent law against monopolies. People would have to have the right to choose between multiple sources and if needed procure them from elsewhere.
Getting medicine and health options from across country borders for example.
There are issues with state run medicine, sure, but none compare to the massive, profit driven farce that comes from applying capitalist logic to healthcare. Literally the difference between life and death, and you think people are freer by not having the state involved, setting limits to profits at the very least?
And that farmer you mentioned can cut corners. Hiring illegal workers to cut costs, keeping their workers in slave like conditions, because they have no choice. Exposing them, and their consumers, to horribly toxic fertilizers and pesticides, that increase yield but hurt both us, and the environment. That is what happens when you don't have enforced regulations, which requires government involvement.
The government setting water quality standards, and recently getting rid of them, caused a bunch of people to get sick. Ecoli, causing recalls on many produce products, because somebody thought that removing safety regulations would save money.
Capitalism worships profit, under any means. No method is too extreme. That is part if the name. Capital is profit. It is literally "Profitism".
Any attempt to apple standards requires government involvement, because it is the only thing that can actually hold some people accountable. But if we get rid of the government involvement, we also would get rid of the protections for the wealthy, via police and military enforcement, which stops mind from killing the elites who have so severely failed us.
So long as police and military stop people from seizing the profits themselves, your capitalist ideals are drivel.
Profit is unpaid wages. If a company is making lots of money, and that success doesn't at least partially carry over to the workers, all of them, especially those lowest on the totem pole, then the company is a leach. Siphoning value away, condensing if into the arms of the few, and causing a drag on the economy.
If you have six million dollars in profit for a year, and six thousand employees, the economy does way better by giving all those employees a thousand dollars to reinvest in local goods and services than it does by giving that money to a small handful of executives. Those executives do not need bonuses. They already get paid for their job way more than those other employees.
And can you imagine the kind of quality worker, and the talent pool, of people who want to work for a company that reinvests success into it's employees?
And every single one if those employees would be motivated to ensure their company succeeds. They would feel like they are part if something bigger than themselves. It would cut attrition rates, and it would certainly cut corporate malfeasance costs. Any employees seeing someone else stealing, would take an affront to it.
But no companies do this. The elites would stop getting all the gross excesses they enjoy. We would demand it, but without being able to hold the wealthy accountable when they fail, french revolution style, then things are never going to improve.
In The Details.
He who has no control over the DETAILS of a matter has no say over the matter period. Not only is “the devil in the details” as the old saying goes , but the entire mechanics of a thing lies within its details. This is why the state planned economy inevitably ends in tyranny. No matter how much the statist insists it reflects the “general” aims of the people, the people do not craft the details, political officers do. There is no feasible way for 100 million individuals to add input into and design this state planned economy. The ONLY way for the citizens of a large society to actually participate in shaping the economy is to do so directly by setting the demand as consumers and deciding which products and which firms have a function and which do not.. When the people disapprove of what they are getting in a product or service in a free economy, they change what they are doing with their dollars and things change. Products and companies disappear. When the people disapprove of what they are getting under a state run economy they are just stuck.
In a free society as little as possible is turned over to the state precisely because of an understanding of the truth expressed in the very first sentence of this piece.

Forget love: This is how to find your perfect partner
Image copyright Getty Images
What’s the best way to find the husband or wife of your dreams?
Think what society tells us about finding the perfect life partner: it’s all about love; follow your instincts; it’s down to fate.
Now consider what would happen if you followed similar advice in your job, or even trying to run a company.
Imagine telling investors you hadn’t done any market research, had no long-term plan and hadn’t bothered to study business. It wouldn’t inspire confidence, would it?
Yet the choice of who to marry is without question the biggest decision you are ever going to take.
This is someone you’re going to see virtually every day for the rest of your life; if you have kids, you’ll almost certainly have them with this person; you’ll share a bed, holidays, money, a home – pretty much everything, in fact.

Image caption Society tells us to follow our instincts when it comes to love – but should we?
Wouldn’t it make sense to take a more rational approach?
The statistics certainly suggest lots of us are getting it wrong, 42% of UK marriages end in divorce. In the US the figure is even higher: half all married couples divorce.
That’s why Ed Conard decided he needed to “optimise” his search for a spouse when he wanted to get married 20 years ago.
Mr Conard is an uber-capitalist. He made millions running the venture capital company, Bain Capital, with former US presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
Image copyright Getty Images
Image caption The question is, how do you pick your perfect partner?
He is now an economic commentator and the author of the magnificently bombastic bestseller, Unintended Consequences: Why Everything You’ve Been Told About the Economy Is Wrong.
He calls the process he chose “sequential selection, no turning back” – romantic, eh?
Here’s how it works.
Calibration
You start off by “calibrating” your choice. That means meeting as many suitable partners as possible.
Cast your net wide, he urges, but initially you must forget about lust and even love: “that’s evolution trying to get us to have babies,” cautions Mr Conard.
You won’t date anyone now, you are just gathering people who might make the grade. There probably won’t be that many, maybe a handful or two.
Once you’ve got a set of promising candidates you move to phase two. You are going to date a third of this subset, choosing them pretty much at random.
You won’t marry any of these people, according to his rules, so be prepared to be hard-hearted, moving on however attractive a potential partner seems.
The most suitable person in this period “calibrates” your choice, setting the standard for the next stage in the process.

Image caption Ed Conard argues we should adopt a highly systematic approach to finding a soulmate
Evaluation
What follows is what Mr Conard calls the “evaluation” period: this is when you actually choose your future spouse.
Once again, you’ve got to drop potential partners like a stone if you can’t resolve problems fairly easily.
“You have to be ruthless,” he insists. “If you are not highly confident that that person is a person you can be successfully married to… you have to get rid of them.”
Here’s Mr Conard’s key rule: “When you find someone better than the best person in the calibration period, you marry them. And if you haven’t found anyone by the end, you marry the last person.”
Follow this process, he claims, and the statistics suggest they’ll be as good a match as you’re going to get.
Job done.
Better matches, happier marriages?
Mr Conard’s approach to choosing a wife is a well-established method for buying things like a new place to live but, says Nobel Prize winning economist Alvin Roth, spouses aren’t like houses: marriage is a market without prices.
Image copyright Standford Univresity
Image caption You can do too much calibrating and evaluating, cautions Prof Alvin Roth
Prof Roth of Stanford University won his Nobel for his work on balancing the supply and demand of all sorts resources that don’t carry a price tag – schools and students, kidneys and patients, doctors and hospitals.
He agrees that it is important to meet quite a few possible partners before you take the plunge – “don’t marry the first person you meet”, he warns.
You’ve also got to have realistic expectations: “the first thing a matrimonial agency has to do is persuade clients they aren’t a 10.”
But, he says, you can do too much calibrating and evaluating. Choosing a partner is a two-way thing: it is only when you are serious about marriage that potential partners will take you seriously.
“Part of being well matched is the history you share and this starts when you first meet”, Prof Roth says, “so investing in that history improves the quality of that match.”
To use an economic metaphor, you have to build up some capital.
What about love?
That’s no doubt what lots of you will be asking.
“It sounds a little bit cold, a little bit calculating; very unromantic”, says Nicola Cornick, a bestselling author of dozens of romantic novels and the chair of the Romantic Novelists Association.
Image copyright HarperCollins
Image caption “Under an instant attraction there are probably rational criteria there as well,” says Nicola Cornick
Not surprisingly she is a big fan of love and romance in relationships.
“If working your way through a checklist with a whole load of people works for you then hey, that’s great”, she laughs.
“What I would counsel against is throwing out the element of spontaneity.”
Mrs Cornick believes the idea that being swept off your feet is always irrational is just plain wrong.
“I think if you examine what lies under an instant attraction there are probably rational criteria there as well”, she says. “You’ve got the same sense of humour, you’ve got shared values or interests.”
And she’s not alone in thinking that. Let’s cut to the chase…
How did the real story end?
Did Ed Conard meet his perfect match?
Image copyright Ed Conard
Image caption Jill Davies is the woman Ed Conard finally fell for: she says “I just went with my gut”
Jill Davies is the woman he finally fell for – or should that be “selected”?
She acknowledges his systematised approach is probably “unique” and – you may be surprised to discover – she was “charmed” that he had put so much thought into the process.
But there was no methodical reasoning for her when she met Mr Conard on a blind date. “I just went with my gut”, she admits. “I thought Ed was a brilliant person, I’d not met anyone like him before.”
And think about it this way. Jill had ranked top in Ed’s brutal search process so she was, judged by his objective criteria, the woman of his dreams.
But what about romance, I want to know. “For him, this is romantic”, she says, “but a different version of romance.”
Jill and Ed have been happily married for 20 years so maybe their romance is evidence the head and the heart can work together.
Now there’s a thought for Valentine’s Day!

Elie Saab on confinement as an opportunity to organize thought; reduce anger and tame egos
Few countries are going through as much a crisis as Lebanon right now, even if the country has been relatively unscathed by the Covid-19 in comparison to Western Europe. FashionNetwork.com caught up with the country’s most famous designer, the Phoenician couturier Elie Saab, to discuss the impact of the pandemic. And how his couture house is handling the enormous disruption caused by Covid-19. Elie Saab’s headquarters in Beirut, Lebanon – Elie Saab Though he always shows haute couture and ready-to-wear in Paris, Saab’s hometown is Beirut, which has been the center of enormous political activity this spring. This week, Lebanon’s lawmakers donned face masks to meet inside a cavernous Beirut theatre – in order to observe social distancing – the place sprayed with disinfectant as they entered. Outside, anti-government protestors paraded around in hundreds of cars – again, to maintain social distancing. Remarkably, throughout Lebanon’s long years of civil war and often chaotic conflict, Saab and his three sons have managed to build one of fashion’s most distinctive houses, develop a unique aesthetic and dress an Oscar winner. So, we caught up with Saab for his particular take on the current crisis, and what we can all potentially learn from this dark moment in world history. As well as how he sees the before and after Covid-19, both very different to him. And why, to Saab, this period can be one of personal fulfillment; and an opportunity to organize one’s thoughts; reduce anger and tame ego.A look from Elie Saab’s Fall/Winter 2020 collection – Elie Saab FashionNetwork.com: Where are you now? With your family?Elie Saab: I’m in Lebanon with my wife Claudine. We spend our time between the house in Beirut and our house in the mountains in Faqra. Elie Jr and Celio are also in Lebanon but Michel is still in Switzerland. FN: How is the situation in the Lebanon?ES: Unfortunately, the situation in Lebanon is not very favorable. For a while now, we have been living in a fairly fragile and agitated economic and social context and this virus has made the situation even worse. FN: How are all your team?ES: Everyone is fine. We had taken the necessary measures to ensure the safety of our teams. However, we are starting to set our goals by looking to the future, considering that this pandemic has become more contained and controlled. The teams are working on a suitable tactic and a more suitable strategy for the long term that will be applied immediately. FN: How has all this pandemic affected your creative ideas? ES: Honestly, I consider that this pause has generated certain positive consequences. I had never had the time or the opportune occasion to put my ideas in order, to reflect amply, to see things from another angle and in a more serene way. This confinement is an important period of reflection and contemplation. I continue to feed my creativity on a daily basis, I let myself be inspired by everything around me. FN: When was the moment when you first realized how serious this all was?ES: We were living in an express world where everyone was caught up with their agenda between incessant travel and consecutive events. Now, suddenly, the whole planet is in confinement, the world economy is affected, so we understand that the situation is out of the ordinary. Nature, whether one likes it or not, is stronger than we humans. What we have just experienced will not be able to reproduce easily. It may be tens of generations more before we face a similar test that will change our perception, be it personal or professional. I hope that everyone will take advantage of this situation to build a better, healthier, more balanced, simpler, and above all more humane future. FN: Has anyone you know personally been affected?ES: This virus has unfortunately affected a large number of people around the world. To see that there is a large number of deaths really pains me …Like everyone else, I know friends who have been mildly affected by the virus or their family members. But I believe education and awareness about the virus now will help contain the spread so that we can get by as quickly and as best as possible. FN: How will fashion change after Covid-19?ES: Fashion as well as the world will no longer be the same. We will refer to before and after Covid-19. Many things will change. I was convinced that a change would take place sooner or later because the cycle was no longer human. But I never thought that in our time, a pandemic would mobilize the planet to this point. The pace in our industry had become insane, robotic: we were working on several collections at the same time, so we lost the pleasure of savoring each one. We were under continuous pressure, we lost the joy of living and enjoying human relationships, as well as listening to others. Due to the speed and the sequence that we lived, simplicity lost its value, merits had become less and less appreciated. The calendar we were following was crazy and barely gave us time to catch our breath. Even the customers were bombarded by the novelties on the market. The consumption of the products became irrational and it was rather an endless race. We have to start again on the basis of favoring quality over quantity, creating brand-specific experiences, giving back the product’s own value so that it remains timeless. I really believe that today, we are moving to a new chapter that will give us the chance to set the record straight.A look from Elie Saab’s Fall/Winter 2020 collection – FashionNetwork.com FN: How will the world change after Covid-19?ES: Our daily life will also change. We got into the habit of connecting remotely, working remotely, finding opportunities and looking for reliable solutions. We have developed our adaptability. We have realized that we can do things without being on-site by ensuring good remote management. Everything can be done online and this gives greater importance to technology. This phase remains very exceptional, as everything will gradually resume to regain its place – as it should. Excess remains the boredom of mankind and everything must be well-balanced to give a better meaning to humanity. Earth, too, had to breathe differently, with less pollution! It was really a click that brought us back to true and simple values. I am optimistic, I welcome this situation positively as a way to redefine our aspirations, our needs, our expectations. This period gave me a certain feeling of gratitude. I consider it as an experience of personal fulfillment to assess the details that surround us. I really hope that many people have had the chance to organize their thoughts during this time to reduce their anger and tame their ego. Some had lost their bearings before, and now is the time to raise the bar and return to simplicity and authenticity. FN: As an industry of incessant travel, where the shows went on last month even as the pandemic raged in China, does fashion bear any of the blame?FN: Fashion Week may have accelerated the spread of the virus, but there were also other sporting events, conferences, etc. taking place around the world. Meetings and trips are not just for visiting fashion capitals and attending fashion shows. The spread of this virus has no borders or barriers. I especially do not want to associate this virus with the Fashion Month period because fashion represents beauty and elegance, Fashion Week evokes conviviality, and I insist that it symbolizes such, and that, forever. FN: Many people have talked about a reset button – do you think that is the case?ES: Of course, the entire planet is on hiatus and it takes a “reset button” to restart it. Yet, you must be very careful when restarting the machine. We must ensure that we will take over the reins with skill, by emphasizing quality, in all of these aspects. We cannot ignore this phase that we have lived and re-launch lightly as if nothing had happened. This initialization button should trigger a promising start. I can’t stop thinking about it, and I’m in the midst of organizing myself to pass this course at best. FN: Others have noted that influencers have gone very quiet. Do you think that their influence will wane?ES: I have a belief that you cannot cross out something that has existed for a certain period of time. Influencers marked their territory: some were influential and were able to create an identity, others lesser so, and this will also be the case in the future. These influencers are above all a source of inspiration for the millennia and I hope that they will evolve in the right direction. FN: What will we keep from this period and what will we discard?ES: Personally, I will keep my character that you know well: simple, human, courteous and insightful, so as to not complicate matters. I will get rid of everything that could harm the quality of life that I will begin again, and take more pleasure around human relationships. My initial intuition had never deceived me, and today, I am even more convinced that you have to be well-surrounded to give more to the world.I have always gone forward with hope, and learned to overcome obstacles by determining the essentials, what inspires me – and this will further strengthen my conviction. FN: Do you still expect to come to Paris and shows in September?ES: Paris is my second city, and I can’t wait to come back to start again fully. I hope that this industry will recover in the best conditions possible, and that we will all be united to create subtly.

The Next Big Thing in what is copyright
And in the long run, the like you make, is equivalent towards the love, you take. ~Lennon and McCartney~
I exploit to acquire aggravated by Valentines Day. I thought of it a income grab perpetrated through the greeting card, floral, lingerie and confectionary industries to get American buyers to pay for $18.six billion (based on the National Retail Federation) in an effort to materially Specific our enjoy for our associates. A ritualized instance of economic hucksterism.
When reflecting on Valentines Working day and also the revenue derived through the notion of affection, it happened to me that if organizations definitely "occupy" the Idea of love within their company cultures, gains would prosper, leaders will be additional fulfilled, along with the ripple impact would remodel the social and environmental crises struggling with the planet today.
The Organization of Love
Why is there no love in corporations? Why is love all but stricken from the corporate lexicon?
Very first, as company men and women we have been mired while in the distorted paradigm that we must "compete" for "our reasonable share" - acquire/eliminate wondering, that is based on the assumption that there aren't plenty of means for everybody to reside in materials abundance. Scarcity is based on anxiety - panic that there won't be sufficient. And panic and appreciate - as opposing polarities, can't co-exist.
2nd, really like is misperceived as "tender" in a tough company globe, when in fact, to lead by having an open up heart - the supply of appreciate, belief, connection and empowerment - necessitates actual braveness, and is particularly the only real legitimate supply of power. A much more skillful strategy to Stay and guide.
Eventually, the model of capitalism was constructed within the minimal notion turned self-satisfying prophecy that self interest drives human behavior. From there it's got grown into a pathological pursuit For additional, perpetuated by an epidemic of dread.
Due to this fact, love in company is often a misconceived anomaly - Peculiar bedfellows that not often exist in-tandem. But that's modifying. We're for the precipice of a social transformation in capitalism, and leaders that ignore this accomplish that at their peril.
A Call For Bravery
Envision a courageous CEO, a conscious leader, prepared to function from his coronary heart and his head. A CEO that has asks the concerns - how am i able to provide? What on earth is our reason and what is the purpose of company? What exactly is driving my life - my ego, or an intelligent drive industry depending on like? And what if I test on adore as a corporate mantra - compassion and caring for all my stakeholders - staff, clients, suppliers, shareholders, Local community, even my Competitors? Consider a business with an increased sense of objective, that is totally endearing to all its stakeholders. What would that seem like regarding financial gain, market place value, joy, peace, fulfillment!?
Heartshare Equals Marketshare
Professor Raj Sisodia wrote a wonderful reserve, referred to as Firms of Endearment, where he profiled thirty corporations functioning from this area of compassion and service, and empirically shown that not merely had been their workers happier and more engaged, but their inventory market place benefit outperformed the S&P 500 over a ten yr interval by a factor of 8.
As human beings, whether we acknowledge it or not, our greatest will need is relationship and connection, the source of which happens to be really like. That resource is also occurs to be the most powerful creator of organization worth. Staff members want appreciate - caring and relationship - to one another and to an increased purpose - to go the extra mile. Buyers want to be in love. The makes of Starbucks, Google, Whole Foods, Harley Davidson, Apple could be deemed "Lovemarks" in lieu of "Trademarks". And when prospects won't be able to uncover love, they're going to accept The most affordable price tag in lieu of having to pay you a quality.
There are numerous wonderful pioneers in personal and public firms who realize that emotionally clever leadership is at the guts of this new worth revolution. They know that "coronary heart-share" is a more skillful intention than "wallet-share" - in the long run leading to the best financial gain and worth development. Beneath are a couple of:
Innovators Embrace Adore and Build Terrific Prosperity
• Kevin Roberts, CEO of Saatchi what is copyrightin and Saatchi, one of the worlds largest marketing businesses explained the best degree of branding as creating a "lovemark" vs. trademark, support mark or copywrite.
• Southwest Airways, NYSE ticker symbol, "LUV", generally known as "the like airline" is the only real airline which has been worthwhile each and every year because it commenced in 1973. CEO Gary Kelly points out his differentiator as "Persons working with each other, lovin' one another, persons respecting one another".
• John Mackey, CEO of Full Foods labored with his group to create a "Declaration of Interdependence", which acknowledges that all stakeholders are similar to a household whose customers depend on one another.
• Honda "marries their suppliers for life"; When suppliers earn admittance into Honda's offer chain, they're supported in enhancing their excellent and profitability.
The truth is capitalism, in It is recent sort, isn't really Performing. But capitalism can get the job done. And financial gain growth can catalyze vital equilibrium inside of a earth from get. It just wants like. We have to action outdoors our paradigms of scarcity and Competitors, and step inside of a brand new paradigm of service, of offering, of caring. We must become aware which the unconscious drive of self fascination only brings about seeking and dissatisfaction, and exchange it with "enlightened self curiosity", aligning and serving stakeholder interests. Why? Simply because it works. It truly is essentially the most skillful way to create value, and generate pleasure.
R evol ution is really an inside job. But right up until we move past our own indoctrination, embedded by a globe that may be mentally sick, we won't really know what re evol ution is. We've appear a good distance, and Evidently the start is in close proximity to.
As component of your strategic plan, I invite you to inquire on your own how one can Construct additional adore into your brand and company tactic - by aligning, caring for and serving all your stakeholders - clients, personnel, traders, suppliers, Neighborhood and world alike.
The development of impressive nonetheless very simple copy commences with the renowned First Basic principle: The products or services supplied have to fulfill a real will need. This can be basic and simple to do, Based on Susan Gunelius, author of Kick Ass Copywriting in ten Simple Ways. The First Principle Of Copywriting suggests "Your product or service is far less significant than It is capacity to fulfill your customer's desires." Keep an eye on this idea mainly because a services or products has to fulfill a have to be of curiosity on the buying general public. If it will not fill a necessity not one person will want it or purchase it.
So as to sell an item with easy but powerful copywriting we request ourselves who wants to get our products and why. There are two sorts of need we are interested in; urgent will need and mere perceived need. We deal with our duplicate to both just one. The only individual likely to obtain our product or service is anyone which has a will need for it. So we pitch to the need. Any problem that causes Severe discomfort and/or threatens the life and contentment in the prospect and his potential to function totally is undoubtedly an urgent will need. But perceived need to have refers to desires that are not Severe but under no circumstances the less make the prospect unpleasant. His distress is this sort of that he surely would like relief but will endure no sturdy hurt if his pleasure is slow to reach. Since urgent will need is considered the most powerful it truly is more practical to provide a service or product that will get rid of the urgent risk speedily. Even though most goods accessible to the general public tackle lesser perceived demands. But we would be wise to produce or endorse an merchandise that removes urgent will need. This is obvious adequate.
Urgent want is often the necessity to deal properly using a risk to survival or maybe the potential to survive while in the short term that also triggers Bodily or mental discomfort. The need for food, air, h2o, local weather and methods to life threatening illnesses are its most important traits. Merchandise enabling the prospect t to get paid funds also strongly relate to survival as well as the appropriation of comfort. Copywriting resolved to what is termed "perceived need" bargains with significantly less fast sources of discomfort, lots of which can be generally psychological. The strongest copywriting aims at urgent need . Featuring to fulfill any want is the primary basic principle of copywriting. We will also need to make use in the listing of the varied popular wants, urgent and perceived. Copywriting seeks to hit the focus on strongly with powerful text. That is the means of impressive copywriting.
Right after Mastering Every single simple copywriting principle in the Complete Kick Ass Copywriting eCourse we should have a look at true life advertizing and just take Observe of how the basic principle is being applied by Skilled copywriters. Make the effort to have a look at a TV ad, a newspaper ad, journal advert, or Site revenue web page, and pay attention to an audio ad after Mastering each theory. These are typically good true lifestyle examples of the rules we discover listed here and present distinct ways of how the pertinent wants are targeted, and also the design and really feel from the presentation. We can easily learn a great deal at no cost by finding out adverts that we find everywhere. In fact, we might be hard pressed to prevent them.

Financing Your Home Business
The 5 Things Every Company Must Do When Seeking Capital
In my practice working with startup and growing companies, the first and most important question I am invariably asked is: How do we get financing and on what terms? Since being undercapitalized is the death knell for startups and not a good thing for any company, it is an issue which needs prompt solving. As any realtor will tell you, when selling a house it needs to be “dressed for sale.” Fix the leak in the bathroom, patch the roof, add two coats of paint, replace the dead azalea and be sure the pictures on the internet show off the home to its best advantage. Now you are ready for the market. When dealing with the financial markets, advice from one-time Giant football coach Bill Parcells comes to mind: “When you get to the end zone, look like you have been there before.”
Franchise Businesses – Visit the Home Business EXPO
So how do we get ready to “sell” the company to a lender, angel investor, private equity company and even to an IPO underwriter? The principles are the same. You need to make sure your “house” is in top shape first, by examining and preparing the following:
1. Financial Statements.
Have accountants or sophisticated financial professionals prepare them. Don’t try this at home kids. Always be sure the figures are mathematically accurate, based upon factually correct assumptions, cross foot, contain a balance sheet, income statement and statement of cash flow. Financial statements come in three varieties: Compilation, Review and Audit. “Compilation” is a gathering of financial information supplied by the company and put in a proper accounting format. It is not certified by an accountant and is the least reliable (and least expensive) variety. “Review” has critical evaluations of the clients’ numbers to confirm a level of accuracy more than compilations. “Audit” has the financial evaluations which provide for accuracy greater than reviews and confirms accounts with the outside world of customers, vendors and creditors. In financing, it is worth the investment to get a review or audit. With startups, compilations work only for so long, and with commercial lenders, as opposed to angel investors, audit is required by Federal regulators.
2. Financial Projections.
Please don’t come up with the notion that the industry is $4 billion so all I need is 1/2 of 1% and I am home free to put $20 million of revenue on my projection. I have seen it and worse yet I have seen potential investors react to such nonsense. Talking about getting to the end zone – here is a chance to either look like a seasoned veteran or to embarrass yourself as a rookie. Detail is king. To determine revenue, make lists of customers and what they have purchased and assess the likelihood of repeat business, improved levels or losses for each one. Carefully provide the pipeline of future business, their potential contributions, estimated time of arrival and the pari-mutuel odds of success. Provide head counts, future hiring plans and the incremental costs of new business. Also, no investor wants to pay for unnecessary expenditures that are not essential to the business. So now is the time to get spouses, children, cousins and the nanny off the payroll. If you are not a cruise line, get the boat off the books and have the business charter it at market rates when you are doing business entertaining.
3. Legal Audit and Review.
This is the time to get rid of your old Legal Zoom purchase and to fire your brother-in-law even if he did survive two years at The Spencer Business Institute. You need a competent corporate lawyer to do a soup-to-nuts legal review, including all charter documents, articles of organization, by-laws, stockholders or LLC operating agreements, all investor documents and correspondence, all deeds, leases, financing documents, equipment financing and purchase documents, vendor contracts, customer contracts, employment agreements, tax filings with IRS and appropriate states, pension plans, ERISA plans, any surveys, environmental studies, and all IP documents and correspondence relating to the company’s trademarks, copyrights, patents and trade secrets. If the company has IP, give counsel the freedom to consult with your IP counsel to fully understand the landscape.
4. Self-Assessment.
Staging is everything.
Commercial Lending: Every commercial lender and every private equity player has stringent and inviolate rules of engagement. For the former, the rules are set primarily by the state or federal government in some form or fashion, the latter by the limited partners investing in the fund. So, if you are a mature company with audited financial statement and five years of profitability, feel free to approach either. Otherwise, they make no exceptions. With commercial lenders you need to know rates but also terms, including the dreaded personal guaranties. Know too that while they will be doing extensive diligence on you, you should be doing extensive diligence on them. How committed are they to your industry? They may be heavily into your industry and are unlikely to pull out of their loans shortly down the road. If they taking a shot with you and are dabbling, BEWARE. My adage is that in bad times banks call good loans. The bad loans won’t pay off. Check their track record on foreclosing on good companies (in bad times just about everyone is in technical default). Also read and get help analyzing your balance sheet. In exuberant times banks may lend at six times cash flow and in bad times they may think (or the regulators may think for them) that three times is the better number. Plan for such occasion by lowering leverage with additional equity and do it before the banks tell you to.
Private Equity: It is time for private equity if you are looking for a good and well heeled business partner to grow the company. In the best of circumstances, they provide internal growth capital to fund those critical projects. They are ideal too for those strategic acquisitions. Again, do as much diligence on them as they do on you. What have they done in the past, during economic downturns, missed projections, heightened competition?
Family, Friends and Angels: At the start stage you need to find folks who believe in you. Family, friends and angels. Put together the best operating team you can who show that you care about competence and depth, who can replace you if you are run over by a bus, and who can handle anything in you absence. A smart, well financed angel who believes in you is your best early stage investor.
5. Aligned Interests.
Private equity players always make a fuss about interest alignment. Does the company and the equity prosper under the same circumstances? The principle is the same with the company’s internal operations. Are the salespeople compensated on a percentage of monies collected not just accrued? No employee that I have ever known has sought to be paid by an assignment of accounts receivable. Are there incentives for proper inventory control? Is there a credit policy that allows for an acceptable degree of risk, which will maximize sales but at acceptable levels of write offs? Are collections part of an established policy and regularly monitored? It sounds mundane but anyone entrusting money into your hands wants to know that you are adept at the little things which matter so much in the aggregate. To echo Bill Parcells, you need to be skillful at blocking and tackling.
So whether you are looking for capital to start a company, to operate a company, to grow a company organically or to grow by acquisition or through your IPO, the principles are the same. Pay attention to details, be meticulous, be thoughtful and look like you have been in the end zone before!

Worst of Times
Now that I no longer do a weekly TV show, I have more time to read my local paper. Sadly, that’s The New York Times.
The Times actually does some good reporting, but their political and economic coverage is filled with deceit.
Can I find deceit every day? You bet. Take a look at a few days just last week.
–Thursday:
The front page: “NAFTA’s promise is falling short, Mexicans agree.”
Wow, the Times now embraces Donald Trump’s position on trade? Economists estimate that 14 million jobs depend upon NAFTA, but people everywhere often oppose trade because the smaller number of jobs lost is more visible than gradual gains.
What evidence of NAFTA’s failings does the Times offer? Oddly, the article says “the workforce has grown.”
Ah, hello? Job growth is good.
Jose Luis Rico “earns well under $10,000 a year.”
Not much by American standards, but good for Latin America, and the reporter mentions that Rico got “a handful of raises.” Have you gotten “a handful of raises”?
Despite NAFTA, the “gap between the nation’s rich and poor persists.”
Duh. Trade doesn’t eliminate wealth gaps—it may increase the gap because the cleverest traders get rich. But since the poor gain jobs and wealth, too, so what?
Finally, the clueless Times reporter quotes a Mexican politician and crony capitalist complaining: “Government has not established policies to protect Mexican businesses.”
But “protection” for some businesses is corporate welfare—welfare for the rich. It hurts poor people by raising prices. The Times wants that? Maybe they’re sucking up to Donald Trump and his friend Carlos Slim, Mexico’s richest crony capitalist, and the Times‘ biggest shareholder.
–Friday:
A front-page story smears David and Charles Koch (the former of whom is a trustee of Reason Foundation, the nonprofit that publishes this website)
First, the reporter labels them “the ultraconservative billionaire brothers.” Ultra? Why ultra? Why conservative even?
The Kochs favor liberal immigration rules, gay marriage, legal drugs, ending racial discrimination in criminal sentencing, fighting in fewer foreign wars and getting rid of government bailouts and favors for businesses, including their own. David Koch supports higher taxes to reduce the deficit. Which of those things is conservative?!
Maybe the Times calls the Kochs “ultraconservative” because a political group they support points out, “Policies that subsidize electric vehicles and solar panels for the wealthy raise energy prices” and gas and oil are cheaper for everyone. The reporter adds that the group even showed a “video of people driving, turning on lights and plugging in appliances.” Oh, no! How terrible!
The reporter claims the “Kochs have long worked to quash… renewable energy sources like wind and solar.” But they haven’t! They try to quash subsidies for renewables. Big difference. Doesn’t the Times know the difference?
The Times appeals to its Trump-hating readers with a headline that begins “Sensing Gains Ahead Under Trump, the Kochs …” But the Kochs didn’t give Trump a penny.
It’s time for the Times to stop calling all their opponents “conservatives.” Some of us are libertarians. America has other choices besides the anti-capitalism of the Times and anti-capitalism of Trump.
–Saturday:
The Times quotes left-wing New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) saying it “defies common sense” to have a nuclear power plant near New York City. Green activists oppose the plant and Cuomo now says it will close.
But where will New Yorkers get power? The “options include hydropower from Quebec and power from wind farms.”
Great. But what will we do when the wind doesn’t blow? At least the reporter admits that “New York City could be burdened with higher energy prices.” Could be? Will be!
–Sunday:
“Trump Denies Climate Change, These Kids Die.”
That’s the headline on a Nicholas Kristof column about drought in southern Africa. Apparently, there were no dry spells before “man-made global warming.”
In truth, starvation has decreased dramatically thanks to fossil fuels. Starvation now is caused by corrupt governments, not climate change.
If there’s a way to blame capitalism even as it improves the world, the Times will find it.
