Yes to everything you wrote about ghosts, why couldn’t the reason for them leaving be the unsafe house, or that it’s located in the middle of nowhere, or the financial issues… what makes it worse is that “being around uncles and aunts and grandmas when you have a child” is not only positioned as a detrimental factor but the MOST detrimental factor - the actual tipping point to leaving, the main reason why Allison was distressed. And they were never uncles and aunts to Allison, they were an undefinable found family. It’s so disheartening that they deemed the family structure as impossible and laughable and I can’t really see the series in the same way again.
i KNOWWW its so bad…. like i think them leaving would be a bad conclusion in any context because its the direct antithesis of the whole theme of the show (especially coz of a factor introduced this late on) but if it was some external factor at least i would always have the first few seasons…. but i cant watch them being a family and having pretendy dinner together or having a tent sleepover the same way knowing alison will never see them as a real family and she will leave them for the sole benefit of never having to see them again. i made this analogy to a friend already but its like watching a 5 season romcom and at the end person A dumps person B for someone they met in that episode and says well i never even liked you that much. how am i supposed to watch them kiss in s3 now and enjoy it the same way? lol
#also if were going with the annoying uncles analogy. its like moving out of your annoying unclea house n moving in with someone elses uncle#like we established that alison can see all ghosts and there are too many ghosts for her to ever live somewhere without any. be real

prince's gambit highlights & annotations
chapter 8
indented text is from the book. some quotes have commentary, some do not. some comments are serious, and some are definitely not. most of them will only make sense to people who have read the series. and, like, there are spoilers. so please read the books first if you're interested!
also: part of the reason i'm doing such a close reading is to study cs pacat's style, especially in terms of how she does romance and erotica. there are "craft notes" that might seem weird, like i'm being redundant or restating something rather than analyzing, but those are more things that i want to remember/take away from the writing!
i'm going to tag these longer posts with "sam reads capri" in case anyone wants to read them all at once.
this is a google doc i wrote with overall content warnings for the captive prince series. it's not perfect, but i do think it's important to include.
It had not been easy to prise out all the information, but Damen had provided the mercenary with a sustained, methodical and unrelenting incentive to talk.
this is a fun line. also, another little hint that kinda offsets the flogging in book 1. like yeah it was bad, without or without the Brother Killer Context, but it’s not like damen is above similar methods of torture towards his enemies. and that’s what damen had been to laurent, at the time—literally his worst enemy in the entire world, except for maybe the regent.
Damen would need to take his horse off the road, and ride straight, as the crow flies, cross country. He didn’t hesitate, spurring his horse up the first slope.
and now i’m hearing the twilight princess hyrule field music. i am not complaining
It was a tactic that reeked of the Regent. All of this was: this convoluted trap reaching across the landscape to splinter the Prince from his troop and his messenger, so that to save one meant to sacrifice the other. As Laurent had proven. Laurent, to save his messenger, had surrendered his own safety, sending away his only protector.
context: yeah i think this is actually an accurate assessment of the situation
Damen tried, for a moment, to think his way into Laurent’s situation, to guess how Laurent would evade his pursuers, what he would do. And realised he didn’t know. He couldn’t even make a first guess. Laurent was impossible to predict.
damen: imagines laurent pulling off some kind of insane rube goldberg machine of tactical evasion, or taking out several armed men while cornered in an alleyway
laurent:
Laurent, the infuriating, obstinate man that he was, was impossible, wholly and completely.
His arrogance was unbearable. If he had deliberately left himself open to attack, if he was caught by one of his own games . . . Damen swore, and focused his attention on the ride to the camp.
oh i go CRAZY for the “i’m upset with you because you endangered yourself and i want/need you to be okay” trope
Laurent was alive. Laurent sidestepped everything he deserved. He was slippery and sly and he had escaped the attack in the town with chicanery and arrogance, as usual. Curse Laurent for this.
okay i’m lost, why is damen mad at laurent? to my understanding, it went like this:
people came to attack laurent and the messenger, splitting up between the two tasks
which then forced damen and laurent to split up. damen did not want to leave laurent unprotected, but knew that somebody had to make sure the messenger was okay. he told laurent to trust that he would succeed and return to camp, agreeing to make it back in a certain timeframe.
damen learned that the people pursuing the messenger were on horses, which meant that the timeframe was miscalculated. but still he went and stopped them, interrogated one, learned about planned attacks on laurent and the camp, and hustled to get there.
in the uber there, damen alternates between fretting about laurent’s safety and imagining all of the harmful ways laurent could have somehow manipulated him or the situation.
it’s unclear to me here if, at this point, damen has actually arrived and found laurent alive (and is pissed about it?), or if he’s just entertaining a hypothetical scenario in which laurent has manipulated him into… what? protecting the messenger and interrogating the pursuers? damen was going to do that anyway. it was in both of their best interests that it got done. and laurent hadn’t known about the horses, so the timeframe had seemed reasonable.
i thiiiiiink this is a hypothetical imagining, and an aftershock from the past 20 chapters, rather than an accurate assessment of the present situation. damen still expects laurent to screw him over, despite the night they shared, because he’s experienced the entirety of the captive prince and 7 chapters of the prince’s gambit. in terms of pattern recognition, it’s not an unreasonable thing to expect. still, it does frustrate me, which might be the entire point. a first-time reader might be thinking more along the lines of damen, which bodes well for that assumption being proven wrong shortly.
also - i could just be totally missing something, or underestimating laurent’s overall situational awareness. that’s what happened the first time i read the series—i felt so awful for laurent towards the end of book 2, and was frustrated with damen for keeping up the lie! although in this case i suppose i’m thinking less about laurent's awareness and more about his intentions? i don’t know. i’ve scrutinized this passage enough. i’m just going to keep reading.
The Laurent who had sprawled out by the fire seemed so far away, limbs unwound, relaxed, talking . . . Damen found that memory was inextricably tangled with the glint of Nicaise’s sapphire earring, the murmur of Laurent’s voice in his ear, the breathless brilliance of the chase, rooftop to rooftop, all of it woven into one long, mad, endless night.
laurent’s conscious delusion about damen not being the same person as damianos, vs. damen’s subconscious delusion about bitchy laurent not being the same person as charming laurent. everyone loses
None of the men he saw was a yellow-haired prince in a woollen cap. And just as he feared the worst, just as all that he had not let himself believe for the long ride began to push itself to the front of his mind, Damen saw him, drawn out of one of the mostly intact tents not six steps away, and gone still at the sight of Damen.
haha you didn’t want him to be deadddddd
it might be scarier to damen that laurent is not trying to screw him over and has survived, than if he had done something hurtful and/or died. given the way laurent freezes at the sight of damen, he’s probably thinking something similar about his voluntary return. like “shit—the worst hasn’t happened. what now? and how do i deal with the fact that laurent dying/damen leaving was, in fact, the worst-case scenario?
His newly minted hair was uncovered, and he looked as fresh as he had emerging from the baths the night before, as he had waking beneath Damen’s hands.
context: laurent disguised himself as a prostitute in a brothel. the yassification was a convenient side effect of the overall scheme
‘You’re alive,’ Damen said, and the words came out on a rush of relief that made him feel weak. ‘I’m alive,’ said Laurent. They were gazing at one another. ‘I wasn’t sure you’d come back.’ ‘I came back,’ said Damen.
“i wasn’t sure” there’s no way in hell you thought he would come back, laurent. maybe logically you weren’t sure, but in your heart you accepted the abandonment the second he left your sight. just like nicaise did, when you left arles :’(
also they do a lot of gazing. i should have started a count earlier but i’m too lazy to go back now. for the record: they do a lot of gazing.
Damen tried to stop looking at Laurent. He had a hundred questions. How had he escaped his pursuers? Had it been easy? Difficult? Had he suffered any injury? Was he all right?
“was he all right” SHUT THE FUCK UP 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 <3<3<3
With the damage of the insurgency still awaiting his attention outside...
wait, so if the insurgency was a part of the overall plan, that tells us conclusively that there are like. inside men working for regent within the camp. which yeah, we already knew, but they’re actively getting intel somehow. or maybe this was planned from the start? this couldn't have been all aimeric, right??
To Damen, it seemed obvious that the uprising was planned, that the instigators were paid, and that their plan had relied on the fact that the rest of the Regent’s men, rabble-rousers, thugs and mercenaries looking for an outlet, would take the first excuse to lash out at the Prince’s men, and join in.
okay cool i was right about that
Two weeks ago, the troop had been a rabble split into two factions. They had not developed the fledgling camaraderie that now held them together; they hadn’t been sent to their sleeping rolls night after night exhausted from trying to outdo one another at some mad, impossible exercise; finding to their surprise after they had stopped cursing their Prince’s name, how much they had enjoyed themselves.
two weeks ago, they had not participated in the “i’ll make a man out of you” montage/musical number from the animated film mulan
It could have been far, far worse. Damen thought of all the ways that this might have played out: Laurent dead, or returned to find his troop in tatters, his messenger cut down on the road. Laurent was alive. The troop was intact. The messenger had survived.
an interesting counterpoint to damen’s catastrophizing en route to the camp.
i think between damen and laurent, we’re seeing the way trauma affects people at different distances from the traumatic events:
damen has very recently been traumatized by his father’s death, his brother’s betrayal, and the events of book 1. he is hypervigilant, almost perpetually disoriented, and prone to spiraling and expecting the worst. because everything is so fresh, he is unable to separate logical expectations from fear-based pattern recognition. he is feeling this hurt, whether he wants to or not, and cannot prevent it from affecting his perception and judgment.
laurent, meanwhile, endured similar trauma—loss, betrayal, sexual abuse—seven years ago, and then for a few years after that. it isn’t raw anymore, but that doesn’t mean that it’s gone. laurent’s trauma absolutely impairs his judgment, both strategically and emotionally. his wounds have not closed properly, his bones have set out of place (i don’t know enough about injuries to make good metaphors here). but he has no intention to fix that, because it would mean exposing the wounds or breaking the bones again, and enduring more hurt.
This day was a victory, except that the men didn’t feel it. They needed to feel it. They needed to fight something, and to win.
i see you’ve taken laurent’s philosophy of taking great pleasure in small victories to heart, damen
‘I prefer to think my way out of traps,’ said Laurent, ‘rather than use brute force to simply smash through.’ The words had the air of finality to them. Damen nodded and began to rise when Laurent’s cool voice stopped him. ‘That’s why I think we should fight,’ said Laurent. ‘It’s the last thing I would ever do, and the last thing that anyone, knowing me, would expect.’ ‘Your Highness—’ began Jord. ‘No,’ said Laurent. ‘I have made my decision. Call in Lazar. And Huet, he knows the hills. We plan the fight.’ Jord obeyed, and for a brief moment Damen and Laurent were left alone together. ‘I didn’t think you’d say yes,’ said Damen. Laurent said, ‘I have recently learned that sometimes it is better to simply smash a hole in the wall.’
and laurent has taken damen’s philosophy of Rip The Thing Out of The Wall to heart, too!!!
It was a succinct speech that was equal parts rallying and infuriating,
i would love to actually read a laurent speech on the page. i’m imagining something between a regina george/heather chandler backhanded bitchy monologue, a dungeons and dragons player explaining their convoluted plan to the dm, and a musical theater director addressing the cast on opening night after a week of grueling dress rehearsals
‘Orlant’s dead.’ ‘Dead?’ said Damen. ‘He was killed by one of the insurgents?’ ‘He was one of the insurgents,’ he was told, shortly. ‘He attacked the Prince as he was returning to camp. Aimeric was there. He was the one who took Orlant down. Got cut up doing it.’
context: pretty sure orlant was trying to warn the prince about aimeric being a traitor…
He remembered Aimeric’s tense, white face, and thought it best, before riding out into a fight, to check on the boy.
damen gets a pass for this misjudgment of character because everyone else fell for it too (i think laurent fell for it? at least at this point?)
‘A traitor,’ Aimeric echoed hollowly. ‘Would you have killed him for that? He was your friend.’ And then he said it again in a different voice, ‘He was your friend.’
context: aimeric is a traitor. he asks jord, his “friend,” if he would kill a traitor (like him). and then he repeats the sentiment in a different voice, because aimeric cares about jord, and he knows that he killed jord’s friend and feels guilty about that.
Damen and the group of fifty men he led were the bait. With them were the wagons that mimicked the appearance of a full troop making an attempt at tiptoeing their way stealthily south, under cover of night. When the enemy attacked, they would appear to fall back, and instead lead the way to the remainder of the troop led by Laurent. The two groups would trap the attackers between them, cutting off any escape. Simple.
foreshadowing of them both being kings—competently in charge of their own forces—but proving more effective as a unified team
He saw the flash of confusion in Lazar’s eyes and thought for a single heart-pounding second that his order might not be followed—despite the authority that Laurent had lent him for this mission—because he was a slave.
okay but like i think the second you came back instead of attempting escape, you made it pretty clear to laurent and everyone else that you’re not
Their attackers fell back, or simply fell. Pulling his sword from the man who had tried to knife him, Damen saw the mercenary at his right fall victim to a precise killing. ‘I thought you were supposed to be the bait,’ said Laurent. ‘There was a change of plan,’ said Damen.
stop flirting, you’re in battle (just kidding, i love battle couples)
‘I’m not used to my uncle miscalculating,’ said Laurent, after a pause. ‘It’s because he’s working at a distance,’ said Damen. ‘It’s because of you,’ said Laurent. ‘What?’ ‘He doesn’t know how to predict you,’ said Laurent. ‘After what I did to you in Arles, he thought you’d be—another Govart. Another one of his men. Another one of those men today. Ready to mutiny at a moment’s notice. That was what was supposed to have happened tonight.’
context: i think this is true! which is funny that i have to specify, but since like 70% of what laurent says is in some way untrue for the first two books of this series, it does help
‘Instead, you have saved my life, more than once. You have made fighters of these men, trained them, honed them. Tonight you handed me my first victory. My uncle never dreamed you’d be this kind of asset to me. If he had, he would never have allowed you to ride out of the palace.’ He could see in Laurent’s eyes, hear in his words, a question that he did not want to answer.
“why are you helping me?”
there are other ways damen could be helping akielos, without helping laurent. they both know it. but he’s choosing to do this instead, and they both know that too.
He pushed away from the tree. He felt an odd dizziness, a sense of displacement, and to his surprise he was prevented from moving off by Laurent’s hand clasping his arm. He looked down at it. He thought for a strange moment that it was the first time Laurent had ever touched him, though of course it wasn’t; the grip was more intimate than the flutter of Laurent’s lips against his fingertips, the sting of Laurent striking his face, or the press of Laurent’s body in a confined space. ‘Leave the repairs,’ said Laurent. His voice was soft. ‘Get some sleep.’ ‘I’m fine,’ said Damen. ‘It’s an order,’ said Laurent. He was fine, but he had no choice but to do as he was told; and when he tumbled onto his slave pallet and closed his eyes for the first time in two long days and nights, sleep was there, heavy and immediate, drawing him down past the strange new feeling in his chest into oblivion.
head in my hands, i love them so much. so many of these little details remind me of the way it feels to develop feelings for someone—little signs that you could potentially fall all the way in love. the sensation of innately understanding that you could give this person your heart, mind, and body, and they would understand what to do with them. that you could want them to have those things, and you could want theirs too. not right now, perhaps never at all—but the potential is there. it’s a strange feeling because it’s a million feelings at once: excitement, enchantment, fear, confusion, and so on…
also, i think i made a note previously on the nature of tenderness through damen’s perspective. inflicting pain vs. caring touch. if i do any kind of overview at the end of this re-read, i’ll want to take a quote from this passage for that specific theme.
#zelda references are getting out of hand i blame the horses#also i love lamen so much it's unreal#capri#sam reads capri#captive prince#prince's gambit#laurent of vere#damen of akielos#lamen

It's their notebook scribbles! There is one in each of their profiles (+ Tsukushi's)
Tsukasa
Tsukasa: "A bird does not let go of the pigeon it's about to leave"
(He meant to write "立つ鳥跡を濁さず A bird does not foul the nest it's about to leave" He confused ato (behind) with hato (pigeon) and nigo (uncleaness) with noga (let go) )
Akira: "Consult a dictionary"
Soujirou: "Idiot!!"
Tsukushi: "Pigeon..."
Rui: *drawing of a bird* pigeon.
Rui
The arrow says "Makino". Yes, that's his depiction of her lmao
Soujirou
"Bronx. 23:00"
(Bronx is the name of the club Soujirou takes Yuuki to get revenge on her ex)
Akira
I don't really need to translate this one, do I? "Imperial" is the name of the hotel Akira meets his married affair in vol 1. "Sweet" is probably meant to be "Suite". The number is probably the hotel room number? Idk.
Tsukushi
"Time Service 17:00
Radish
Chicken thighs
Get!"
It's a shopping list lol

Wonder. They used to spark so much of it.
Their heart hurt remembering how they once were. They were so joyful, so free, so happy. But they were so blind, wrapped around her finger. They didn't understand the reality of their situation then.
Their breath hitched. They continued to hold out their arm, their voice now full of desperation.
"A gift? This has...brought us nothing but pain," their voice trembled, as if they were trying not to break down. They hated it. They hated their 'gift'. "Please take it away, please. It hurts."
"Our child, what is the source of your anger? The fire that was once vibrant and lively has been extinguished."
A figure standing about 10 feet tilts its head at darkheart, its body drips black liquid with gold swirling inside of it. The liquid seems to go back to the body and repeat the process of dripping again..like it's stuck in a time loop....

Darkheart is rather intimidated, jumping back a bit, startled. They were just about to go to sleep...
They're in the guest bedroom in Venomshank's apartment, Venomshank himself is sound asleep in his own bed. So it's just them. Them &...whoever this is.
Their scales stick out a bit, but they hold back on most of their usual snappiness. Something tells them that would be a bad idea. They're not sure what, but that feeling they just can't shake.
"...what are you implying?" They hesitate a little when they ask. This person, this thing, are they already asleep? Is this another one of those stupid dreams?

stats: the first 1000(+) polls
we’ve crossed a major milestone: more than 1000 polls (it actually kind of works out to 1000, because there was one duplicate poll, for Shannon Hale’s The Goose Girl, and one poll that I missed in one of my stats spreadsheets, but)!
as usual, any time I give two percentages with a slash between them (e.g., “18.5% / 11.3%”), the first percentage is the mean and the second is the median.
general observations
we’ve had 46 majority-yes results so far; for comparison, we had 43 majority-yes results in the last round of stats, meaning that in the last 180 polls there have only been 3 new majority-yes results, all children’s books.
the highest individual yes result on either this or the sci-fi blog is still C.S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe at 85.3% yes.
averages continue to drop.
the mean yes result for all books is 13.0% (down from 13.9%), and the median yes result is 6.8% (down from 7.4%).
when I give aggregate numbers for things, I missed a book at some point when I was updating my spreadsheet, so any totals will only add up to 1001 at most.
publisher
the gap between anglophone big 5 imprints and other publishers continues to narrow, but again it’s because the averages for big 5 imprints are dropping:
big 5 imprints: 15.7% / 9.0% yes
others: 6.8% / 2.9% yes
big 5 imprints make up the overwhelming majority of submissions: 713/1002 polls (71.2%), followed by 216 from anglophone independent publishers (21.6%).
age demographic
children’s books continue to be much more likely to get a yes result; the averages across all categories have fallen again.
adult
there have been 553 adult books, of which 10 have gotten majority-yes results (2.2%). the average is 9.4% / 4.9% yes — note the still very low median. an adult book that gets a more than 4.9% yes result is in the top 50% of most-read books in these polls!
teen/YA
there have been 201 teen/YA books, of which 4 have gotten majority-yes results (2.0%). the average is 11.8% / 7.5% yes.
children’s
there have been 247 children’s books, of which 32 have gotten majority-yes results (13.0%). the average is 21.5% / 14.5% yes.
publication date
the decades that have enough books to provide (somewhat) meaningful data are still in a pretty clear bell curve peaking in the 1990s and 2000s:
18th century: 1
1830s: 1 book
1880s: 1 book
1890s: 2 books
1900s: 5 books
1910s: 3 books
1920s: 3 books
1930s: 7 books
1940s: 4 books
1950s: 17 books (average 29.4% / 12.5%, heavily skewed by Tolkien and Lewis lmao)
1960s: 14 books (average 23.2% / 15.4%)
1970s: 42 books (average 13.2% / 6.4% — these have actually risen slightly!)
1980s: 85 books (average 13.4% / 5.9%)
1990s: 118 books (average 16.4% / 11.0%)
2000s: 231 books (average 15.6% / 8.5% — a relatively large drop)
2010s: 311 books (average 9.9% / 5.0%)
2020s: 155 books (average 9.0% / 4.6%)
race
the gap between white authors and authors of color has narrowed slightly, as the average for white authors has continued to drop and the average for authors of color has continued to rise slightly.
white authors: 13.9% / 7.5% yes
authors of color: 7.9% / 4.5% yes
white authors still make up the overwhelming majority of submissions — 856/1002 polls (85.4%).
gender
all averages have fallen slightly. books by women and books by nonbinary writers still have a lower mean yes rate than books by men but a slightly higher median yes rate. this data suggests that in fact people read books by authors of all genders at relatively similar rates overall but that there are more bestsellers / classics by men (skewing the mean up).
women: 12.4% / 7.2%
men: 15.0% / 6.7%

Deity Drop 6: Abhoth
Just as we did when be touched on Great Old Ones in a previous deity special, we are heading back to cosmic horror with our first Outer God.
But what exactly is an Outer God and how does it differ from a Great Old One? Well, a Great Old One is a demigod-level entity that has a body that can be noticeably affected by it’s mortal environs, and for all their defying of sane physics and geometry, it is possible for a mortal to fight back against such an entity and with a little luck “kill” it, forcing it into torpor or at least making it decide that being there is not worth the annoyance.
An Outer God, on the other hand, is a true deity, albeit an unknowable one that doesn’t even try, or perhaps is incapable of understanding why one would try and take a form comprehensible to the majority of mortals.
Like the Great Old Ones though, most of these entities cannot be bothered to even notice mortals, their cults often calling upon deaf ears, with only a rare few ever being granted power, perhaps as an afterthought or even without the deity realizing. While some may have specific malevolent designs, most seem content to stew in their own incomprehensibleness with no real plan beyond just existing in a way that mortals strain to understand, seeming to embody the belief that the universe is truly uncaring.
Abhoth himself is the “Source of Uncleaness”, a monstrous parent figure to all manner of horrors. His children ranging from just as formless as himself to ambulatory limbs, to surprisingly complex entities both fully formed and malformed. Most are immediately seized and consumed by him, but some escape to wander away, wandering the extradimensional tunnels of his realm until they find their way into the underground of other worlds. That’s right, many true-breeding aberrations in Pathfinder, including the classic gibbering mouther, are descended from this foul god!
All of this reflects his nature as patron of the misbegotten, an avatar of life gone wrong in violation of every natural order.
Abhoth himself is described as having a twisted and cynical personality, seeing no beauty in the world and seeking only to add cruelty to it.
This outer god is originally from Clark Ashton Smith’s Hyperborean Cycle of short stories, where he made the jump to the Call of Cthulhu and other such RPGs and then on to Pathfinder.
Though the original source describes him as grey in color, Abhoth’s art in Pathfinder paints him as a bright light (possibly glowing) blue. This may have been to help distinguish him from another cosmic horror staple in the game, the shoggoth. Indeed, for like many formless horrors, Abhoth’s only defining feature is his formlessness and tendency to form and reform various random body parts from his mass seemingly at random with varying degrees of recognizability.
While it is not given a name in Pathfinder, Abhoth’s grotto is connected to many different underground realms across various planets, and his realm itself is a maze of tunnels that he wanders through aimlessly as the spawn that survive his hunger.
As a god of fecundity, I can see some twisted remote culture venerating the Source of Uncleaness as a fertility deity, or perhaps warded against with the hope that children are born whole and fully formed. However, those that delve into his monstrous true nature may come to believe that his formlessness and cruelty are the truest expression of life, and get up to the usual nasty cult business of trying to summon him, or more likely, some of his children, and generally venerate all manner of unnatural life forms, often to the detriment of their health.
As a particularly cynical outer god, Abhoth counts none among his friends, not even his own children.
He also lacks servants in the traditional sense, being directly served by no one. However, he is able to see many worlds through the eyes of his spawn, and may even invade such a world through them on a lark.
Abhoth favors the domains of Chaos, Darkness, Earth, Madness, and Strength, with the subdomains of Caves, Ferocity, Insanity, Night, Nightmare, and Resolve. All of which reflects his cruel but not overtly malevolent demeanor, as well as his connection to caves, physical might and the horror of his own existence.
While a handful of Outer Gods have been written up in 2e, Abhoth has not gotten that treatment yet, so no list of his domains exist there yet.
Like all cosmic horror gods, Abhoth is too uncaring to offer any rewards of obedience.
With all sorts of horrors found in the depths of countless planets, you can bet your buns that Abhoth is definitely still out there in the far future of Starfinder, even if he hasn’t been officially mentioned yet.
That does it today, and yes, Abhoth’s story did inspire the demon lord Jubilex, but we’ll talk about how Pathfinder sometimes doubles up on certain deific concepts some other time. For now, eagerly await the final deity we’ll be covering this week, the first non-evil one we’ve had in a while!

Leviticus 16: God Tells Moses How Aaron Will Approach And Enter The Most Holy Place
1 The Lord spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron who died when they approached the Lord.
2 The Lord said to Moses: “Tell your brother Aaron that he is not to come whenever he chooses into the Most Holy Place behind the curtain in front of the atonement cover on the ark, or else he will die. For I will appear in the cloud over the atonement cover.
3 “This is how Aaron is to enter the Most Holy Place: He must first bring a young bull for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering.
4 He is to put on the sacred linen tunic, with linen undergarments next to his body; he is to tie the linen sash around him and put on the linen turban. These are sacred garments; so he must bathe himself with water before he puts them on.
5 From the Israelite community he is to take two male goats for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering.
6 “Aaron is to offer the bull for his own sin offering to make atonement for himself and his household.
7 Then he is to take the two goats and present them before the Lord at the entrance to the tent of meeting.
8 He is to cast lots for the two goats—one lot for the Lord and the other for the scapegoat.
9 Aaron shall bring the goat whose lot falls to the Lord and sacrifice it for a sin offering.
10 But the goat chosen by lot as the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the Lord to be used for making atonement by sending it into the wilderness as a scapegoat.
11 “Aaron shall bring the bull for his own sin offering to make atonement for himself and his household, and he is to slaughter the bull for his own sin offering.
12 He is to take a censer full of burning coals from the altar before the Lord and two handfuls of finely ground fragrant incense and take them behind the curtain.
13 He is to put the incense on the fire before the Lord, and the smoke of the incense will conceal the atonement cover above the tablets of the covenant law, so that he will not die.
14 He is to take some of the bull’s blood and with his finger sprinkle it on the front of the atonement cover; then he shall sprinkle some of it with his finger seven times before the atonement cover.
15 “He shall then slaughter the goat for the sin offering for the people and take its blood behind the curtain and do with it as he did with the bull’s blood: He shall sprinkle it on the atonement cover and in front of it.
16 In this way he will make atonement for the Most Holy Place because of the uncleanness and rebellion of the Israelites, whatever their sins have been. He is to do the same for the tent of meeting, which is among them in the midst of their uncleanness.
17 No one is to be in the tent of meeting from the time Aaron goes in to make atonement in the Most Holy Place until he comes out, having made atonement for himself, his household and the whole community of Israel.
18 “Then he shall come out to the altar that is before the Lord and make atonement for it. He shall take some of the bull’s blood and some of the goat’s blood and put it on all the horns of the altar.
19 He shall sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times to cleanse it and to consecrate it from the uncleanness of the Israelites.
20 “When Aaron has finished making atonement for the Most Holy Place, the tent of meeting and the altar, he shall bring forward the live goat.
21 He is to lay both hands on the head of the live goat and confess over it all the wickedness and rebellion of the Israelites—all their sins—and put them on the goat’s head. He shall send the goat away into the wilderness in the care of someone appointed for the task.
22 The goat will carry on itself all their sins to a remote place; and the man shall release it in the wilderness.
23 “Then Aaron is to go into the tent of meeting and take off the linen garments he put on before he entered the Most Holy Place, and he is to leave them there.
24 He shall bathe himself with water in the sanctuary area and put on his regular garments. Then he shall come out and sacrifice the burnt offering for himself and the burnt offering for the people, to make atonement for himself and for the people.
25 He shall also burn the fat of the sin offering on the altar.
26 “The man who releases the goat as a scapegoat must wash his clothes and bathe himself with water; afterward he may come into the camp.
27 The bull and the goat for the sin offerings, whose blood was brought into the Most Holy Place to make atonement, must be taken outside the camp; their hides, flesh and intestines are to be burned up.
28 The man who burns them must wash his clothes and bathe himself with water; afterward he may come into the camp.
29 “This is to be a lasting ordinance for you: On the tenth day of the seventh month you must deny yourselves and not do any work—whether native-born or a foreigner residing among you—
30 because on this day atonement will be made for you, to cleanse you. Then, before the Lord, you will be clean from all your sins.
31 It is a day of sabbath rest, and you must deny yourselves; it is a lasting ordinance.
32 The priest who is anointed and ordained to succeed his father as high priest is to make atonement. He is to put on the sacred linen garments
33 and make atonement for the Most Holy Place, for the tent of meeting and the altar, and for the priests and all the members of the community.
34 “This is to be a lasting ordinance for you: Atonement is to be made once a year for all the sins of the Israelites.”
And it was done, as the Lord commanded Moses.

Genre: Slice of life; fluff; drabble
Characters: Leoht and Elric
While Leoht is fast at work preparing his decorative magic for sealing, Elric pinpoints the reason behind Leoht's lightning magic always exploding on him and opts to help the other out in coming up with an easier, less dangerous solution to the problem. A bit of introspection ensues.
His hand is a lot colder to the touch than anticipated.
Elric can’t even begin to imagine how many years its been since he’s done something like this; standing in close proximity of the one witch he’d always known to be his best and only friend, leaning over Leoht’s desk, hand clasped around the witch’s own as he makes a move to reposition the pen between those long, slender fingers to fit comfortably between his fingers too; it feels familiar, intimately so, and the intimacy of it all didn’t seem lost on the witch seated beside him either, if the way those long lashes fluttering down into a soft, half-lidded gaze were anything to go by.
A pang of guilt pierces Elric’s chest.
Surely, he of all people didn’t deserve such closeness? Not after the way the two of them had broken things off all those years ago. Even if Leoht didn’t say it out loud, maybe even refused to acknowledge it altogether, Elric couldn’t imagine the last fight they’d had being any less hurtful on his end.
And yet, here Leoht is anyways, sitting calmly in his seat, eyes still glued to the paper in front of him, his facial features relaxed despite the slight tenseness in his shoulders, hand trembling slightly beneath Elric’s own; a little clammy from the prolonged contact. If there’s any indication that Leoht isn’t comfortable in Elric’s presence, he certainly couldn’t see it, and that in and of itself soothes him, at least a little.
Without Elric realizing it himself, the stiffness in his own muscles begins to relax and he lets go of the breath he didn’t even know he was holding onto. It figures something like this would be a relief to him, but not just because of any confirmation bias Leoht’s body language is giving him.
Rather, it’s because it reminds him of a time long since passed, back when they were apprentices, struggling to learn magic together at their own pace. They may be older now, but the similarities in their positions and the problem at hand are almost too eerie not to take note of.
His hand was cold back then too, Elric thinks, suppressing the urge to smile.
While Elric was able to latch onto their lessons and perform exceptionally well in the realm of magic, Leoht was usually always lagging a few steps behind him, and his struggles only became more apparent the trickier the glyphs and problem-solving were getting. Despite knowing this, Elric rarely ever got a big head over it, instead opting to help Leoht out whenever he could, even if it meant taking Leoht by the hand and trying to ingrain the movements of his pen into his muscle memory by guiding his hand along the rough terrain.
Had it been any other apprentice, Elric would have surely scoffed at their efforts and been thankful that that wasn’t him having such a tough time learning something that should have been simple enough for even toddlers to do. His ego would have gotten the better of him for sure.
But for some reason, because it was Leoht specifically having these troubles, because it was Leoht beating himself up over not being able to pick up on it faster, Elric couldn’t bring himself to be so spiteful.
He wanted to help, not to have a leg up on Leoht or to compete with him necessarily, but merely out of the kindness of his own heart. He couldn’t stand to see Leoht being so hard on himself over something that wasn’t even his fault. If there was anything Elric could do to see Leoht’s big, dumb, doofy smile again, to feel the warmth of his presence, his electrifying energy spiking through the air, then he’d help the other out as much as he could, no matter what.
Maybe the reason behind his willingness to help isn’t as unclear as Elric assumed it to be after all.
Elric huffs, as if to push the softness flooding his chest out of his system as quickly as possible. His grip on the pen and Leoht’s hand firmed up.
“Here,” Elric says, his voice low enough that he hopes only Leoht would be able to hear it, if only because the thought of anyone eavesdropping on them from outside the room mortifies him. “There’s an easier way to accomplish what you’re trying to go for. Let me show you.”
The warm, fuzzy feelings only continue to ravage his lungs as Leoht smiles and leans into Elric’s arm. “Sure,” Leoht replies, softly.
Elric’s brow twitches, his cheeks burning hot in spite of himself. He lifts his free hand and clasps it tight around the top of Leoht’s head, grumbling, “I’m only showing you once, so you better pay attention, alright? I’m not showing you again if you fall asleep on me.”
Leoht chuckles. “Now, what makes you think I’d do something like that, hm?”
“Because you’ve done that before. Remember?”
“That was a long time ago.”
“Might as well have been yesterday to me.”
“Maybe it was yesterday,” Leoht teases, flashing a lighthearted bounce of his brows for added emphasis.
Elric’s grip loosens, his hand falling away from Leoht’s head and raising to scratch the side of his own. “Whatever,” he mutters, sheepishly, though his verbal response isn’t tinged with nearly as much fondness as his thoughts. As he returns to leaning back over the desk, his voice filling what little remaining space is left between them as the pen begins to glide across the page with both hands in tow, Elric, this time, allows the tiniest of smiles to tug along the corners of his lips.
Maybe it was.

Hiring Leaders In The Times Of Crisis
Strong leadership is more important than ever during times of crisis, whether it be an internal organizational upheaval, a global pandemic, or a slump in the economy. The leaders in charge of a corporation have a major influence on its capacity to navigate through difficult waters. During these times of uncertainty, selecting the right executives might mean the difference between success and failure. Crisis-ready executives are those who can maintain composure under duress, lead with resiliency, and motivate colleagues to maintain focus on long-term objectives. This blog will examine the essential qualities and competencies to search for in executives who can successfully lead a business through difficult times.
The importance of crisis leadership
During a crisis, leadership entails more than just standard managerial duties. Under normal circumstances, executives prioritize growth, operational efficiency, and strategic planning. But priorities change when a crisis arises. The company might have to quickly adjust its tactics, reduce risks, and maintain staff morale in the face of uncertainty. Leaders who are prepared for a crisis need to manage the problems at hand as well as look ahead to maintain stability over the long run. Such leaders must be hired using a special methodology that takes into account both hard and soft talents and ensures that the organization's objectives and the leader's values are strongly aligned.
Qualities of a crisis-ready leader
· Adaptability: One of the most important qualities of a crisis leader is resilience. Resilient leaders have the ability to pick themselves up after failures, change course fast, and remain upbeat in the face of difficulty. Consider a candidate's historical success in overcoming problems when hiring for crisis leadership roles. Seek out examples of people who overcame adversity in their personal or professional lives and emerged stronger.
· Decisiveness: Decisions must be made quickly, decisively, and with insufficient information during crises. A leader who is prepared for a crisis must be able to make snap decisions, maintain composure under duress, and weigh the necessity for speed against the possibility of unintended repercussions. They ought to have experience making wise choices in pressure-filled or high-stakes situations. During the hiring process, find out about instances in which they had to make snap decisions and the reasoning behind them.
· Intelligence Emotional (EQ): Stressful circumstances cause emotions to spike. Emotionally intelligent (EQ) leaders are adept at both controlling their own emotions and navigating the emotional terrain of their teams. These leaders have the ability to empathize with people, communicate clearly, and maintain composure in the face of chaos. It's crucial to consider a candidate's capacity for managing interpersonal difficulties when hiring for crisis leadership positions. Their emotional intelligence can be ascertained by asking them interview questions on team dynamics or conflict resolution in previous crises.
· Adaptability and agility: Because crisis situations can alter quickly, leaders need to be adaptive and agile. An effective crisis manager is able to adjust tactics in response to fresh information while remaining open to different ideas and maintaining focus on the main goal. Ask interviewees how they handled conflicting priorities in previous positions or how they adjusted to unanticipated changes in their field.
· Positivity despite uncertainty: A crisis accompanying uncertainty is one of its defining characteristics. Leaders who are prepared for a crisis must feel at ease making choices when the facts are incomplete or the results are uncertain. They ought to be able to accept uncertainty and take measured chances. Look for prior instances of the candidates' handling of uncertainty and their methodology for taking risks when outcomes were unclear.
· Long-term planning and vision: During a crisis, quick thinking is essential, but the most effective leaders never lose sight of the wider picture. They keep an eye on the big picture, making sure that snap judgements are in line with the organization's objectives. Leaders who are prepared for a crisis can maintain order in the present while making plans for the future. Enquire about the prospect’s prior experiences striking a balance between long-term strategic objectives and immediate firefighting.
Essential skills for crisis management
Along with these character qualities, leaders in times of crisis greatly benefit from the following abilities.
· Crisis communication: In a crisis, effective communication is essential. Leaders must be open and honest with their team members, investors, clients, and the general public. They have to be able to deliver the news in an honest, straightforward, and succinct manner even if it isn't good news. Sustaining trust and morale requires the capacity to manage expectations and give frequent updates. When making a hiring decision, find out from candidates' experiences with handling crisis communication and their approaches to informing different stakeholders.
· Risk management: A leader who is prepared for a crisis needs to be knowledgeable about risk management concepts and capable of identifying any dangers to the company. They must be able to recognize, rank, and reduce risks in order to lessen their influence on the company. It is imperative that candidates exhibit their proficiency in handling risk, encompassing financial, operational, and reputational aspects. Enquire about their historical approaches to risk and the procedures they employ to arrive at judgements in high-risk situations.
· Collaborative leadership: Strong teamwork and cross-functional cooperation are necessary during crises. Those who can unite disparate groups to overcome challenging problems are the leaders who flourish in times of crisis. They make sure that everyone is working towards the same objective, encourage teamwork, and listen to differing points of view. Ask interviewees about their experience collaborating with other departments or outside partners to overcome obstacles during previous crises.
· Prudent management: A leader's financial savvy is essential in difficult times, particularly during recessions. To keep the company viable, leaders need to be able to manage cash flow, allocate resources effectively, and make difficult financial decisions. It is critical to appoint leaders who have solid financial credentials and demonstrated expertise leading during difficult times. Seek out those who can articulate how they handle making financial decisions under duress.
· Planning and implementing a crisis plan: Crisis planning and strategy should be one of the abilities of a seasoned crisis leader. Even though emergencies are unpredictable, being prepared can greatly impact how you handle them. During difficult circumstances, leaders with experience in developing crisis management plans, carrying out scenario planning, and putting business continuity strategies into practice can offer direction. Enquire of applicants about their approach to ensuring preparation and how they have contributed to disaster planning in past roles.
How to hire crisis-ready leaders
Selecting the appropriate leader in a crisis demands careful consideration. Here are some helpful strategies.
· Conducting behavioural interviews: Behavioural interviews are an effective method of evaluating candidates' crisis management skills. You can have a better understanding of their capacity for leading through adversity by concentrating on particular instances of prior behaviour. "Tell me about a time when you had to lead through a crisis," or "How did you manage your team during a period of uncertainty," are examples of open-ended enquiries to use.
· Simulated crisis scenarios: Using simulated crisis scenarios throughout the interview process is another useful strategy. Ask candidates how they would react in a hypothetical crisis situation. This can provide you with real-time information into their leadership style, decision-making process, and problem-solving skills.
· Evaluating cultural fit: In a crisis, leadership also needs to be in line with the culture and values of the organization. Especially in trying circumstances, confirm that the candidate's leadership style fits the culture of the company. A strong cultural fit can make it simpler for a leader to motivate the team and generate a sense of unity in times of uncertainty.
· Making use of appropriate tools: Many businesses analyze candidates' essential competencies using leadership assessment methods, such as psychometric tests. By measuring characteristics like emotional intelligence, resilience, and decision-making under duress, these tools can assist assess a candidate's fitness for crisis leadership in a more objective manner.
In times of crisis, selecting the correct leader can be the difference between an organization's failure and success. Executives that are crisis-ready have a certain set of abilities and characteristics that enable them to maintain composure, judgement, and forward-thinking in the face of uncertainty. Organizations may find leaders who will lead them through difficult circumstances and come out stronger on the other side by emphasizing resilience, emotional intelligence, decisiveness, and strategic thinking. Using crisis-specific hiring techniques, such as leadership evaluations, behavioural interviews, and role-playing, will guarantee that the next executive you bring on board is qualified to weather the storm and lead the business towards a better future. Shielding Our Furry Pets from Electromagnetic Fields
Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are almost ubiquitous in the modern digital age. Though our contemporary comforts are made possible by these invisible fields of energy, questions have been raised regarding their possible impact on human and animal health. It makes sense for us to look for ways to protect our cherished furry friends from harm as responsible pet owners. The EMF Defense Pet Pendant is one such technology that is gaining popularity.
What is an EMF Defense Pet Pendant?
An EMF Defense Pet Pendant is a little gadget made to protect animals from the negative effects of electromagnetic radiation. The majority of the time, these pendants are offered as wearing accessories that fasten to your pet's collar or harness. Their working concept is the employment of materials that either absorb, deflect, or neutralize electromagnetic fields (EMF) radiation released by different electronic devices, including home appliances, cell phones, and Wi-Fi routers.
How Does it Work?
Depending on the maker and design, EMF protection pendants may use different precise methods. But a lot of these goods are made using materials that are well-known for their capacity to either absorb or deflect electromagnetic radiation. Typical materials consist of:
You Can Also Try This Product: EMF Defense Pet Pendant
1. Shungite: It is thought that this black stone with a carbon basis has the ability to absorb and neutralize electromagnetic field radiation. Because of its alleged capacity to filter dangerous electromagnetic frequencies, it is frequently seen in EMF protection items.
2. Orgonite: Orgonite is a composite substance consisting of quartz crystals, metal shavings, and resin. Because it is believed to transform negative energy into good energy, it is a well-liked option for EMF protection.
3. Scalar Energy: Certain EMF protection pendants assert to release scalar energy, which is said to balance the body's energy field and counteract the negative effects of electromagnetic fields.
Benefits of EMF Defense Pet Pendants
1. Protection from Harmful EMFs: Pets are susceptible to the effects of extended exposure to electromagnetic radiation, just like people are. A proactive way to reduce this exposure and shield dogs from any health hazards is using EMF protection necklaces.
2. Peace of Mind for Pet Owners: Pet owners may be reassured knowing that their furry pals are protected from potential injury with these necklaces, since they offer protection against the harmful effects of electromagnetic fields.
3. Non-Invasive Solution: Pet pendants offer a non-intrusive and user-friendly alternative to shielding materials attached to windows or walls, which may be rather intrusive. All that's needed to get your pet going is to fasten the pendant onto their collar or harness.

Considerations and Caveats
While EMF defense pet pendants offer potential benefits, it's essential to approach them with a critical eye:
1. Scientific Evidence: There is few and sometimes anecdotal scientific data to support the efficacy of EMF protection items, such as pet pendants. To ascertain their actual effectiveness, more study is required.
2. Supplementary Measures: Pet necklaces could offer some protection, but they shouldn't be your only option to reduce your pet's exposure to electromagnetic fields. You may lessen your pet's risk by putting additional safeguards into place, such setting up EMF-free zones in your house and restricting screen time.
3. Pet Comfort and Safety: Size, weight, and material should all be taken into account when selecting an EMF protection pet necklace to make sure your pet can wear it comfortably and safely.
Conclusion:
Our understanding of the possible dangers presented by electromagnetic radiation is growing along with our reliance on modern gadgets. Even while it's still unclear how long-term exposure to electromagnetic fields can affect pets, a lot of pet owners are being proactive in safeguarding their animal friends. EMF defense pet pendants provide pet owners peace of mind knowing that they're doing everything in their power to keep their pets safe and healthy in our increasingly digital world. They offer a practical and non-invasive solution for reducing the possible risks associated with electromagnetic radiation.
