Police have arrested the girlfriend of Joliet mass murder suspect Romeo Nance for allegedly preventing police from finding her boyfriend after they said he killed seven members of his own family and one other person on 21 January.

Kyleigh Cleveland, 21, was charged with obstruction of justice on Wednesday after she allegedly told police she didn’t know Nance’s phone number as the manhunt was underway.

Police said they first made contact with Ms Cleveland when they were looking for Nance’s three-year-old son after he was not found at either of the two family homes where the shootings took place.

When detectives found the child at a home in Plainfield with Ms Cleveland, the 21-year-old was cooperative with police, and agreed to be questioned, authorities said.

However, detectives believe she withheld critical information from them to prevent them from apprehending Nance.

Ms Cleveland, who is the mother of Nance’s three-year-old son, was ordered by a judge to be placed on home confinement and electronic monitoring.

Police believe Nance went on a deadly shooting spree on 21 January, shooting nine people in the Joliet area, eight of whom were killed.

Seven of the victims are believed to have been related to Nance, police said. The victims were later identified as Nance’s mother, aunt, uncle, brother and three sisters.

He is also believed to have shot two men at random, including the final victim, 28-year-old Toyosi Bakare.

Investigators do not believe that Mr Bakare was related to any of the other victims.

The ninth man, who was shot in the leg, is also not believed to have been connected to any of the other victims.

Nance later took his own life hundreds of miles away in Natalia, Texas, following a confrontation with law enforcement officials, police said.

Following the shootings, it remains unclear why Nance travelled to Natalia, which is more than 18 hours away from Joliet by road. Illinois authorities confirmed on Tuesday that Nance had no known ties to Texas.

Medina County, Texas, sheriff Randy Brown said he believes Nance was trying to reach Mexico.

“It seems like they [criminal suspects] all head to Mexico,” he said.

Police are now working to establish Nance’s motive for the killings.

“We can’t get inside his head,” said Bill Evans, Joliet’s chief of police. “We just don’t have any clue as to why he did what he did.”

“We may never know the truth or motives,” added Dan Jungles, Will County Sheriff’s Office deputy chief of operations.

She's probably extremely intelligent and badass and stupidly TALL, just like her old man. Meduu would be the coolest character ever if someone actually remembered she existed.

Asum 'Mdama / Bakar:

Debuted in Halo: Glasslands

Born Jan. 20th, 2542 as the second son of Jul and Raia 'Mdama and the younger brother of Dural. He was trained in combat by Naxan - the great-uncle of Raia. When he learned of his mother's death in March 2553, he went to nearby fields to mourn. Then, he began to be fostered by Kasha 'Hilot as he assumed the new name of Bakar. She would take him to Onyx - her new place of work - and he would attend the Pax Institute while there.

It was around September 2558 that Molly Patel would transfer to his school, leading to her, Kareem El-Hashem, and Unggoy Gudam Keschun to come across him being bullied by three human peers. He would at first avoid trying to defend himself, until one of the bullies hits Gudam hard enough to draw blood. However, just as a full-on fight ensues, an instructor named Dinok 'Acroli breaks it up. The next day, Molly would be forced to sit at the same table as Bakar, giving him the opportunity to chastise her for making him look weak, until the other two arrive. Also during this conversation, they would warn him that his brother had joined up with the Servants of Abiding Truth and had possibly infiltrated Onyx. However, much later, Cortana's message would be sent to all of the galaxy and Onyx's Guardian would awaken. Bakar was at school be it occurred, forcing him to join those hiding in the cafeteria. When Prone to Drift arrives, he and his friends concoct a plan to have Drift reach the Guardian and disrupt its communication with Cortana. Then, the Servants of the Abiding Truth attack the school, killing some people and taking Drift away to the Repository. Bakar and friends would pursue, using some creatures also chasing the Servants in their plan to stop them. After catching up, Bakar would confront his brother and beg him to stop, while Dural felt he had been dishonored and should kill himself. In order to keep the attacking creatures from hurting Bakar, Dural chose to whistle a distraction and sacrifice himself, being carried away. Another creature would remain, but Lucy would arrive and take care of it, getting injured in the process. The kids would take her and Prone to Drift away in the Pelican Lucy brought, then fly close enough to the Guardian so Drift could disable it. Now, Bakar is amongst those living in hiding from Cortana due to Onyx's slipspace bubble being reactivated.

Sayup-sayup musik jazz terdengar mengalun menemani tidurku di atas kursi sofa ruang tamu sedari tadi. Musik itu berasal dari halaman belakang, sepertinya dad dan juga yang lain masih asyik menghabiskan waktunya bersama dengan berpesta ria. Maklum, kami adalah penghuni baru di rumah besar yang akhirnya selesai direnovasi sedemikian rupa agar mirip dengan style rumah lama kami; rumah dengan gaya Jepang modern.

Ibaratnya syukuran sambil bertukar sapa dengan saudara sendiri. Toh juga ini kali keempat kami sekeluarga bisa berkumpul di satu tempat akibat pekerjaan yang tak kunjung menemukan titik senggang. Walaupun tidak semuanya bisa berkumpul, tapi aku sudah merasa bahagia. Keasingan yang dulu aku rasakan sekarang sudah berubah menjadi kebahagiaan seutuhnya.

Rumah ini semula ditempati oleh Aunt Lily dan juga Uncle Jonas. Mereka bilang, rumah ini harus terus dikunjungi dan dipantau pengerjaan renovasinya agar tidak ditempati oleh makhluk-makhluk tak kasat mata.

Kugisik kedua mataku menggunakan tangan lalu hadirlah sesosok gadis dengan rambut panjang sampai pinggang menunduk di hadapanku. 

Aku memekik hendak kabur namun sepatu milik Grissham membuatku tersandung lalu terjatuh. Gadis itu terkejut kemudian mengulurkan tangannya, menyeringai seperti hendak memakanku sekarang juga.

He? Atau mungkin tadi aku salah lihat.

“Ma-maaf!” serunya dengan cepat. Ternyata benar. Fyuh, aku memang sudah salah lihat. Buktinya kaki gadis itu masih menapak pada tanah, tidak melayang atau bahkan mengambang. Dia juga bukanlah sesosok hantu legenda berambut panjang yang terkenal dikalangan masyarakat Indonesia. Atau bahkan Sadako… bukan, dia hanyalah seorang gadis yang hendak berkunjung ke rumahku sembari membawa satu kotak entah apalah itu isinya.

Aku meraih tangannya yang dingin lalu kembali berdiri. Jarak antara tinggi badan kami cukup jauh. Dia… imut sekali. Bahkan aku harus menundukkan kepalaku sedikit agar bisa bertukar kontak mata dengannya. Aku rasa kami seumuran.

“Maaf kalau aku ngagetin kamu,” ucapnya seperti sedang merasa bersalah. Aku pun langsung menggeleng tidak masalah.

“Ma-maaf lagi. Aku tetangga di depan rumah kamu. Ini, ada sedikit hadiah dari keluargaku. Selamat datang di komplek ini. Eum… oh ya, ibu dan ayah bilang terima kasih untuk souvenirnya yang cantik. Maaf tadi kami semua memang enggak lagi ada di rumah,” ucapnya sedikit kaku dan tergagap-gagap sambil memberikan hadiah itu kepadaku. Wajahnya juga terlihat pucat, apa dia sedang sakit?

Aku pun menerima hadiahnya lalu membungkuk, mengucapkan kata 'terima kasih' dalam bahasa Jepang. Dia membeku, matanya tiba-tiba melirik ke arah tangan kananku. Seperti terkejut.

“E-eh... maaf kalau tangan kananku buat kamu takut,” refleksku lalu menyembunyikan tangan kananku ke dalam saku celana. Ah… selalu saja begini. Bekas dari luka bakar yang ada di sekujur tangan kananku ini selalu saja mengundang lirikkan yang tidak mengenakkan. Bekas luka yang sudah bertahun-tahun lamanya. Bekas yang selalu menghantuiku hingga kini.

“Lho? Enggak, bukan begitu! Aduh, kamu salah paham, aku cuma… lagi nervous aja. He… he… he….”

“I'm sorry,” sahutnya lagi lalu menunduk seperti sedang dihukum oleh guru galak yang ada di sekolah. Aku tertawa kecil. Ya ampun, dia ini memang suka sekali meminta maaf seperti itu ya jangan-jangan?  

“Gak apa-apa, nama kamu siapa? Boleh aku tahu?” Kini aku memberanikan diri, hendak mencairkan suasana. Aku pun mengulurkan tangan kananku lagi untuk berkenalan secara resmi dengannya.

“Namaku Shankara Jenaka, panggil aja aku—”

“Kara, gimana? Boleh aku panggil kamu Kara?” tanyaku lagi memotong ucapannya karena terlalu bersemangat dapat teman baru. 

“Hee… biasanya orang-orang manggil aku Shan atau Jenaka, sih. But Kara sounds good. Namamu sendiri siapa?” tanya balik gadis yang kini aku panggil dengan nama Kara.

“Oh, namaku Narasena Shuichi. Panggil aja aku Sena, Shuichi juga boleh,” jawabku lalu dia mengangguk paham. Kami pun saling berjabat tangan.

Mendadak angin malam berhembus kencang yang membuat aku dan Kara refleks memeluk diri sendiri. Suasana juga kembali mendadak hening dan dingin. Kami membisu dalam rentetan helaan napas yang tercipta.

Sampai suatu kalimat yang masih menggantung terucap secara bersamaan, kecanggungan mulai menyeruak. Oh come on, I hate this situation. Benar-benar canggung sekali.

“Ladies first,” ucapku membiarkan Kara agar dia melanjutkan kalimatnya terlebih dahulu.

“Okay. Kalau gitu… aku pamit dulu. Udah malem, kamu juga pastinya harus istirahat. It was nice talking to you, Sena. Selamat malam,” pamitnya melanjutkan kalimat yang sempat menggantung tadi seperti enggan berlama-lama dekat denganku. Did I say something wrong to her…?

Ah, aku rasa tidak. Lagi pula Kara benar, ini sudah malam dan rasanya aku ingin segera melanjutkan tidurku yang sempat terpotong karena kehadirannya tersebut. Atau mungkin, dia hanya sedang mengalami gejala kecemasan ringan ketika sedang bertemu dengan orang baru. Sama seperti dirimu yang dulu, Narasena. 

“Oh? Oke deh. Catch you later, Ra.” 

Dia kemudian pergi dengan langkah yang terburu-buru, aku kembali menahan langkahnya dengan satu panggilan. Dia pun menoleh, raut wajahnya terlihat gugup setengah mati.

“Omong-omong, sankyu! Selamat malam!” teriakku sambil mengangkat kotak pemberian keluarganya—sebuah kotak yang berisi coklat Haigh's (coklat tertua yang berasal dari Australia). Kebetulan coklat ini adalah coklat kesukaan keluargaku juga.

Kara tersenyum hambar lalu mengangguk, melanjutkan langkahnya dan kemudian mulai hilang dari pandanganku. Dia sudah kembali masuk ke dalam rumahnya.

Aku melamun untuk beberapa saat. Angin kencang kembali mengacak-acak rambutku yang sudah mulai memanjang. Entah kenapa ada suatu hal yang membuatku jadi merasa penasaran dengannya. I feel like she's different, berbeda sekali dengan gadis-gadis yang pernah aku temui sebelumnya.

Completely forgot I was there for the green dragons, catch me tending to the Bakar and cooking food for the ancestors and a lil centaur baby comes toddling up to me like "didn't you kill deathwing and then go to the afterlife and also evicted the legion?" and im covered in spices like "yes bb but dont worry aunty Rispah the demon hunter just keeps the warglaives to hunt the plains beasts now, here take this cut of meat to your bakar pup"

My brother is sucked into the dragonriding, so instead of doing the main story he's just trying to get gold on every course. Like "hey didnt that guy uhhh spartan kick a dude off the back of deathwing and jump off the top of the tower in the broken isles after killing Gul'dan?" Don't worry about it uncle Drizz just like racing his big dragon puppy these days.

Capricho ‘Arabe beralun rendah, bergema di antara  dinding 100 tahun kedai kopi klasik di pinggiran kota. Langit cerah dilapisi awan putih memayungi sedikit sebanyak kepanasan mentari berhampiran garisan khatulistiwa. Pun begitu, tidak sedikit susut banjiran manusia keluar masuk ke dalam kopitiam tatkala ini; pertengahan Julai dimana waktu puncak kering dan panas melanda iklim tropika.

"Akak mahu order apa?"

Nafisa mengangkat kepala. Dia belum membuat keputusan, khayal melihat pemuzik jalanan memetik gitar di kaki lima. 

"Err…sekejap," cepat-cepat dia menyelak buku menu yang sudah lunyai selepas beribu kali diselak dan dihenyak. 

"Bagi ini dan ini," Nafisa menunding jari pada gambar lalu menyerahkan kembali buku menu kepada pelayan muda dihadapannya.

"Okay kak," 

Kurang 10 saat, telinganya kembali semula memilih untuk mendengar karya Francisco Tàrrega yang tenggelam timbul dalam lautan suasana. Entah mengapa lagu itu membawanya bernostalgia, mengimbau masa silam yang sudah tercatat sebagai kenang-kenangan. Alunannya seakan berpenglipur lara, perlahan di awal nota, sedikit menaik dan menurun, ditarik dan dipetik tanpa sedikit rasa ragu, menjadikannya sebuah karya agung disebut-sebut. 

"Eh Josh, kau tahu tak nama kau tu nama prophet?" Nafisa bertanya, teruja. Buku yang dibacanya dialih ke atas riba. Cikgu Halimah belum masuk ke dalam kelas tambahan petang itu. 

"Namaku? Joshua?" Lelaki itu menggaru belakang kepala lantas menggeleng. Rakan sekelas yang juga sekampung denganya bertanya satu hal yang aneh dan tiba-tiba sahaja.

"Serius kau ni, bapak tiada kasi tahu?" Seingat Nafisa bapa Joshua yang dipanggil Bapak oleh mereka berdua adalah penganut agama Kristian yang taat, wajib ke gereja setiap ahad selain daripada pengasas kepada Yayasan Kebajikan Tai yang turut sama bernaung dibawah gereja katolik dihujung kampung. Pendek kata, bapa Joshua adalah orang beragama. 

"Entah, mungkin aku lupa. Kenapa kau tiba-tiba sibuk dengan nama aku?" Joshua sudah hilang fokus pada buku latihan sejarah. 

"Kebetulan. Aku baca semalam dalam buku nama kau itu nama nabi yang mana dalam bahasa arab dipanggil Yusha'," terang Nafisa. 

"Ohhh, dalam agama kau pun ada? Aku ingat Bapak bagi nama kristian seakan-akan nama orang putih saja,"

"Balik nanti cuba kau tanya Bapak, betul tak dalam kitab kalian ada nabi bernama Joshua," arah Nafisa. 

"Yalah. Hari ni kau mahu ikut aku ke kedai?" Joshua akan menolong pakciknya di kedai buku di tengah pekan hampir setiap hari. Disebabkan arah jalan pulang yang sama, Nafisa seringkali singgah ke kedai buku itu, menolong apa yang patut atau sekadar membaca mana-mana akhbar, majalah dan buku-buku yang tidak berbalut. Dia juga kenal benar dengan ayah saudara Joshua yang dipanggil Uncle Tay.

"Tak mahu lah. Lewat petang sudah," 

Mereka tidak menyambung perbualan lagi apabila guru fizik yang dinanti-nanti masuk ke dalam kelas sambil mengipas mukanya.

Roh Nafisa kembali ke dalam jasad apabila diletakkan sepiring roti bakar oleh pelayan kopitiam. Nafisa berterima kasih ala kadar. Roti bun yang disapu kaya dan butter masih panas membuatkan dia tidak menunggu lama untuk menikmati minuman petang itu dengan tenang. Caprico arabe sudah tidak kedengaran, diganti dengan mazurca en sol. 

Satu daripada banyak sebab mengapa Nafisa akan mengunjungi kedai kopi ini setiap kali pulang ke sini, pekan kecil yang rata-rata dihuni warga emas. Hanya sebilangan kecil sahaja belia yang tinggal termasuklah pemetik gitar jalanan yang saban hari sabar mencari makan di kaki lima. Irama yang dipetik daripada koleksi klasik menyakinkan Nafisa bahawa pemuda itu pernah sekurang-kurangnya jejak ke menara gading, walaupun tidak ke istana budaya. 

Classical guitar bukanlah satu kebiasaan pada abad ini, bukan juga satu genre yang masyhur dalam masyarakat berbilang bangsa di Tanah Malaya. Lalu diam-diam Nafisa mengaguminya.

“Kak, sorry, kuih koci habis. Ganti kuih lain, boleh?” Pelayan tadi kembali semula ke meja Nafisa dengan menu yang dibuka dibahagian kuih-muih.

Nafisa melihat sekali lalu. Kuih tradisional yang dimasak menggunakan tepung beras, santan dan pandan menarik perhatiannya.

“Bagi yang ini,”

"Fisa, mak kau ada rumah?" Joshua muncul berhampiran tangga rumah dengan menjinjing mangkuk tingkat. Nafisa yang ketika itu sedang mengulangkaji pelajaran di beranda mengangkat kepala. Menjengah-jengah sehingga tersembul kepalanya melepasi tiang kayu.

"Ada di dalam. Kenapa?" 

"Aku punya nenek kirim kuih talam," Joshua mengangkat mangkuk enamel bercorak ayam serama melepasi kepala.

"Ya kah? Kejap," Nafisa bangun lalu menuruni tangga. Kuih talam air tangan nenek Joshua adalah kegemaran emaknya. Nenek Joshua yang sudah melepasi umur 80 tahun masih ligat ke sana ke mari, langsung tidak lapuk di mamah usia. Nenek Joshua dan arwah tok pernah berjiran awal 50-an dulu semasa kerajaan membuka tanah. Mereka antara generasi pertama yang berhijrah ke situ. Sehinggalah dia bercerai dan memilih untuk berkelana, sekali sekala sahaja orang tua itu akan kembali ke kampung, melihat-lihat anak lelaki dan cucunya setelah kematian bekas suaminya. 

"Lamakah dia balik?" Nafisa mengambil bekas makanan daripada tangan Joshua.

"Entahlah dia. Bosan-bosan nanti, dia jalanlah," Joshua sudah masak dengan sikap neneknya yang satu itu. Tidak betah duduk diam. Sekejap dirumahnya, sekejap di rumah pakciknya. Lusa-lusa di Penang sana di rumah makciknya pula. Pendek kata, neneknya berada di mana-mana mengikut kemahuannya. Tiada jadual khusus bagi orang tua itu.

"Kau sudah fikir mau sambung course apa?" Soal Nafisa.

"Hmm, belum. Nanti habis STPM lah aku fikir, kau?" Joshua dan Nafisa antara sebilangan kecil yang tidak ke mana-mana selepas SPM, masih lagi berdiam di kampung, masih lagi berjalan kaki ke sekolah, masih lagi menghabiskan masa di kedai buku pakciknya. 

"Aku…entah. Samalah. Tidak fikir lagi," jawab Nafisa bersahaja. 

"Kau kan student bijak. Masakan belum tahu mau sambung apa," Joshua mengomel sama seperti emaknya. 

"Bijak itu hal kedua. Masalahnya memang aku tak tahu mau jadi apa," 

"Ahh, dari dulu kau macam tu. Tidak tahu..tidak pasti..tidak fikir..semuanya tidak," 

Kata-kata Joshua terasa seperti menjentik telinga. Berdengung-dengung dalam ombak lalu hilang dipukul masa. 

Nafisa menghela nafas panjang.

"Joshua, kau pernah tak dalam hidup kau terfikir yang kau hanya hidup sampai umur-umur tertentu sahaja? You won't go beyond that," 

"Kenapa pula kau ni tiba-tiba,” Joshua mengelak untuk menjawab.

“Aku tanya sungguh ni,” Melihat kerutan di wajah Nafisa, Joshua akhirnya mengalah. Dia mendudukan diri di anak tangga paling bawah tanpa dipinta. Nafisa menurut sama. 

“Aku tidak pernah pula fikir begitu, tapi aku pernah tertanya, ke mana sebenarnya aku hendak tuju. Aku tak pernah ada cita-cita yang kukuh. Malah, ada masa aku tidak tahu apa yang aku mahu,” Joshua meluahkan apa yang terbuku dalam dadanya dewasa ini. Tidak terlintas dalam kepalanya, bahawa hari ini dia meluahkan di hadapan Nafisa, teman sepermainan daripada zaman kanak-kanak yang tidak jemu berkawan dengannya. 

“Kau rasa hidup kau kosong?” tembak Nafisa.

“Entahlah. Susah mau cakap,” 

Masing-masing terdiam selepas itu, mengisi kekosongan dengan merenung anak ayam yang membuntuti ibunya keluar daripada bawah rumah. 

“Kau?” Joshua membuka mulut.

“Hmm?” 

“Sebenarnya sudah lama aku mau tanya, kenapa kau menolak masuk A level? Kau tak ada cita-citakah?” soalan Joshua disambut dengan senyuman tawar.

Nafisa tiada jawapan khusus untuk itu. 

"Laa.. kan aku sudah bagi hint tadi. Aku tak pernah terfikir yang aku akan hidup sampai hari ni, jadi aku tak pernah merancang masa depan. Biar sajalah masa menentukan aku di mana," 

Follow the flow bak kata orang putih. Tidak merancang, atau merancang untuk tidak merancang. Dia fikir, dengan tidak meletakkan sasaran dihadapan, dia tetap juga akan maju ke depan. Terkadang Nafisa terfikir, adakah dengan tidak merancang sebenarnya dia meletakkan seluruh rasa redha dan pasrah dengan caturan Tuhan? Tetapi bukankah Allah suka kepada manusia yang berusaha? Bukankah nabi juga berpesan supaya tidak berhenti berusaha menanam pahala meskipun kiamat tiba?

Kendatipun hari kiamat akan terjadi, sementara di tangan salah seorang di antara kamu masih ada bibit pohon kurma, jika ia ingin hari kiamat tidak akan terjadi sebelum ia menanamnya, maka hendaklah ia menanamnya.

Namun Joshua memiliki pendapat yang berbeza. Yang sehingga hari ini, masih berbekas dalam hatinya. 

"Sebenarnya kau tak mahu bertanggungjawab ke atas pilihan kau bukan?"

I imagine the M.A.T.A agents didn't know who bbb's mom(is the name you mentioned her canon name or am i missing something? Sorry) was so they got confused then Uncle Bakar later came in and quietly explained to them who she was(god I'm dying from laughter rereading this conversation)

Edit: bbb's friends also likely don't know who his mom is(cuz i've never seen him talk about his mom in the series that much) so imagine their surprise when they find out who his mom is

His Dark Materials (2019-2022) - REVIEW

SYNOPSIS

Young orphan Lyra, who resides in an alternate world governed by the autocratic Magisterium, lives with the scholars in Jordan College in Oxford. When her friend, Roger goes missing, she goes on a quest with her daemon Pantalaimon to find him and discovers a secret that involves several kidnappings.

This television adaptation, a joint project between the BBC and HBO is a far improved offering than 2007's 'The Golden Compass' which was a disappointingly tame adaptation. Based on Philip Pullman's trilogy of novels, His Dark Materials is a bold fantasy dealing with parallel worlds, angels, witches and has some pretty dark content. But perhaps the biggest talking point of the novels and something that the show has maintained is its anti-religious themes; the story is literally about waging war to overthrow God. Yet His Dark Materials is a show that doesn't appear to be talked about too much; the scope is no less ambitious nor the story any less complicated or action packed. But His Dark Materials does feel like a high end BBC drama as it sadly lacks the spark to match the more cinematic and spectacle driven television we have gotten used to. It's a shame because the story has a lot of high stakes, plenty of consequences plus interesting and complex characters to get fully immersed in.

After impressing in 'Logan', Daphne Keen makes for an engaging lead as Lyra Belacqua who starts off as someone caught up in the games of others and realizes that she is also a major player in them. Her lineage is as complicated as the central plot revolving around child abductions, the theories of her Uncle, Lord Asriel which are all linked to the ruling Magisterium's obsession in suppressing the knowledge and influence of the phenomenon known as Dust. The subject of Dust is what drives the story throughout all three seasons and links the characters together including Will Parry (Amir Wilson) who becomes as much as a lead as Lyra, Lord Asriel (James McAvoy) who's seeking to overthrow the Authority, the ambitious Lord Boreal (Ariyon Bakare) and Lee Scorsby (Lin-Manuel Miranda) care-free American adventurer just to name a few. There are so many characters on the board to consider and the writers aren't afraid to sacrifice them when needed plus this doesn't take into consideration the daemons. The characters from Lyra's alternate reality exist with animals called daemons that are a physical manifestations of their souls that can talk and interact. But there's no doubt that the MVP character/actor who stands out above them all is Ruth Wilson's Mrs. Coulter who, along with her golden monkey daemon, is as mysterious and terrifying in equal measure as any character gets in this show.

It's a show generally grounded in a gritty reality rather than the more extravagant fantasy set locations that you might come across in other shows. Lyra's world is both familiar but also different to our own with its more fantastical elements coming through the depiction of the various creatures, races and worlds we encounter across all three seasons. The use of airships, the noticeable lack of modern technology such telephones and mobile devices, the Gyptian river boat community, the city of Cittagazze to the Kingdom of the Armoured Bears. The third season introduces the more fantastical elements as Lyra and Will travel to the Land of the Dead while Lord Asriel confronts the Clouded Mountains hiding the Kingdom of Heaven. The production values and special effects are superb especially with the talking animal creatures such as Lyra's daemon, Pantalaimon and the Armoured Bear, Iorek Byrnison. The later inclusion of Angels, Spectres and the strange Mulefar's also convincin on screen, in fact there's not many instances where this show doesn't deliver from a visual perspective. What does betray its television budget somewhat is the absence of daemons in some scenes with large amounts of people. It's understandable from a production point of view and they try to imply their presence by having a few visible, but it is quite distracting and only really where the show reveals its limitations.

For just 24 episodes, His Dark Materials is a series that doesn't outstay its welcome, each season feels generally well balanced nor does any particular season hinder the storytelling at the expense of the others. James McAvoy's virtual absence from season two is perhaps the only exception to this but he makes up for it with a strong standing in season 3 as the show does well to build itself across three seasons towards the long teased battle against Heaven. It's also got its fair share of set pieces and excellent character interactions in a generally excellent adaptation of the novels and puts to bed permanently the memory of the poor 2006 feature film. The controversial themes are at the forefront, it executes its set pieces efficiently and the computer generated characters are never not convincing. What it does lacks maybe is some emotional warmth, this is a dark adaptation filled with horror, betrayals and deaths and there's very little in here to compensate for that darkness. But otherwise it is a handsomely made fantasy series that should be a showcase for the BBC even if HBO have bigger and more popular heavy hitters such as Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon to bear the flag.

VERDICT

While come across as a little low key than other fantasy shows, His Dark Materials has plenty to offer with a well realized series of alternate worlds, multiple threats and memorable characters.

Fig dies in both endings (which are exactly the same save for one shot lmao). Anne was cursed by Rookwood, who blamed the goblins, and there’s no cure for her. Sebastian kills his uncle and is estranged from Anne. Bakar kills isidora, who turned evil because she was addicted to the ancient magic coming from her students.
