Andrew being massively disappointed by everything, but I think part of it is just being around officers clearly lying about their bravery who laugh at Tushin's clumsiness and anxiety and sit there silent when Tushin gets scolded for bullshit reasons when Andrew knows how brave Tushin is, and yet Tushin is also absolutely not the dashing image of what a capable officer should be and hardly even speaks up for himself, A+

And ending on Nicholas being extra pathetic and pitiful - I want to wrap him in bandages and blankets and tuck him back into his bed at home, A+

its not just 'homestuck but shit,' its so much more the central conflict is genuinely really interesting. like, the paradox space canwc takes place in is by default shit. that is its default state. roze lallonk was 'enhanced.' rose lalonde is, from the perspective of jhon and hecka and so on, an eldritch being that they cannot properly comprehend, and she wants to make them like that too. from her perspective, this is an improvement! from the perspective of like everyone else, thats a kind of horrifying prospect! but if they were to be 'enhanced,' they would almost certainly agree that it is an improvement, and godhead aradia proves this - "it feels like ive just woken up fr0m some kind of very l0ng and absurd nightmare". its a really interesting ethical dillema! and its still running on reader commands, unlike SOME web comics of the LAME and OLD sort…

OCtober #2! This is my girl Cendy, an animated plush beagle who's the star of a fantasy book I'm working on. She's a mischievous little goober with a penchant for getting herself and her friends into trouble. More info under the cut:

Cendy's a very old character of mine. She's based on a Webkinz Beagle I had when I was... four? five? I started formulating her story when I was six. Naturally, it and she have both changed a lot over the years. For this latest revamp I wanted to lean more into her plush toy nature. I found references of different actual beagle plushes (shoutout to @plushieanimals and @littleguymart, lots of good inspo and cute plushies to be found there!)

I used a (free to use) photo of felt to add a bit of texture to this drawing. You'll see in the next few OCtober drawings that I started really experimenting with texture, though this is the only one I used an image for; the rest are Procreate brushes.

I'm currently in the process of rewriting the novel Cendy stars in (it's called Missing right now, though that might change), so expect to see more of her and the universe she comes from.

"I control the Chaos."

I love this line so much. Bc, just reading it, it looks really cheesy and dramatic, and it sounds really cheesy in my head.

But in the context of the show? Its used brilliantly. And it is delivered Perfectly. It gives me chills everytime i watch this episode.

Recipe for distaste starts with Strickler giving his history lesson and he's all "you control the chaos you control the game" and by the end of it he's got jim trapped on like 4 different sides: hes in kahoots with notenrique whos proven to be disloyal and unaversive to hurtingpeople including jims allies and his own familiars family, hes planted a fake amulet which ensures jim cant armor up taking away not only his means of protection against bodily harm but also his main weapon that hes been training with, hes dating jims mom which has caused a rift in their relationship, and he has authority at school and is fully capable of spying on jim without it seeming entirely suspicious.

So now strickler has all the power and he really does control the chaos. He's got everyone right where he wants them and it set up so perfectly for the next episode and it just works so well.

Reprimanded

Nicholas Valon was reclining in his chair when his cell began to ring. He’d been dozing, drifting just on the edge of sleep in front of the television, when the ringtone sounded, stirring him. He wanted to ignore it, but decided he’d at least check the caller ID to see whom it was he was shunning.

He should’ve ignored it.

It wasn’t a name on the little LED display, but rather a title, and one he wasn’t keen on seeing.

Chairman

Groaning grumpily at the thought of dealing with his difficult boss, he took a preparatory breath and muted the TV before answering the call.

“Hello—”

“Shut up,” the chairman’s voice cut him off.

Nicholas flinched. He held his phone back, staring at it incredulously for a moment before bringing it back to his ear.

“I’ve been rather tolerant of your attitude towards the children for the last four years, but this time, you’ve crossed the line.”

“Sir, I—”

“I said, shut up.”

‘—don’t know what you’re talking about.’

“I told you just the other day how sensitive Rachel Bluestar’s case is—”

‘Shit,’ Nicholas thought as things began to make sense.

“—so why are Arc and Dan tellin’ me that you provoked an outburst from her similar to the one that killed her family? Are you trying to kill my students? Trying to ruin everything I’ve been workin’ to build? Did you even consider the fallout that would come of a bunch of human children dyin’ at the institute? That’s exactly the type of incident The Guild is waiting for!”

Nicholas growled to himself, being very careful not to let his boss hear. ‘That fucking shrink and leech ratted me out.’

“I’m waiting, Nicholas,” the chairman demanded impatiently. “What do you have to say for yourself?”

“Sorry, you told me to shut up,” the teacher snarked irritably.

A loud noise filled the line, making Nicholas jerk the phone away from his ear. It had sounded like an explosion.

“Answer the question, Nicholas!” the chairman’s voice cracked, loud enough for him to hear without putting the phone back in place.

He blew out a long breath, thinking over his words carefully before raising the phone again. “With all due respect, sir,” he sneered the word, “I was only trying to make them realize how important it was for the girl to learn to control her power. I’m sure you’ll agree that she is, in fact, a danger to anyone around her.”

“Even if that’s true, you don’t tell her that to her face,” the chairman said sternly. He sounded like he was talking through his teeth. “You’re suppose’ta be instilling confidence into these children regarding their abilities, not makin’ ‘em afraid of ‘em.”

Nicholas scoffed. “We should all be afraid of that little monster.”

“DO NOT CALL HER A MONSTER!” The chairman wasn’t yelling into the phone; he was screaming, loud enough to startle the device out of Nicholas’s hand. “THE ONLY MONSTER IN THAT SCHOOL RIGHT NOW IS YOU, YOU SON OF A BITCH, AND THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR HISTORY! WHO THE FUCK SAYS THAT SHIT TO A CHILD? I KNOW YOU’RE FUCKED UP IN THE HEAD, BUT THIS IS BULLSHIT! YOU’RE LUCKY I’M NOT THERE ANYMORE, ‘CAUSE I WOULDA DRAGGED YOUR ASS BACK TO BLACK SUN AND TAKEN YOU DOWN TO THE LOWEST LEVELS, WHERE NO ONE WOULD BE ABLE TO HEAR YOU SCREAM!”

Nicholas ground his teeth, biting back his retort. It wasn’t the first time he’d gotten on the chairman’s nerves, but he’d never heard his boss so irate. He was thankful that the man on the other end of the call was also on the other side of the Atlantic, but he also knew how easily the chairman could be back in Hale if he wanted.

“Now you listen to me, and you listen good,” the chairman went on saying, his volume even but his tone still scathing. “I rehabilitated you from the monster you were because I find value in your experience transitioning from the Human World to the Mythical. It’s because of that experience that I thought you’d make a good teacher for these kids. But I did not give you that position so you could terrorize them into losin’ their tenuous control over potentially dangerous abilities.”

‘It’s not like I asked for this gig,’ the teacher growled mentally.

“So I had better not find out you’ve done something like this ever again, do ya hear? Not this school year, not next school year, not ever. If I find out you’ve made a student shed so much as a single tear over somethin’ like this again, you had better start runnin’ again, because I’ll be coming for you. I’ll hunt you down, and when I find you — Allah as my witness — I’ll show you what a real monster looks like.”

Even through the phone, Nicholas could feel the malice and the venom in the chairman’s words. Cold sweat broke out on his brow; the hair on the back on his neck stood up; and for a moment, he couldn’t breathe.

“I expect to hear a much more positive report about this week’s Gym Class, is that understood?”

Nicholas opened his mouth to answer, but the words stuck in his throat.

“Is that clear, Nicholas?” the chairman repeated, threateningly.

The teacher swallowed around the lump in his throat and licked his dry lips. “Understood,” he managed to croak.

“Good. Enjoy the rest of your night.”

Click.

The call ended.

For several minutes after, Nicholas sat frozen with the phone still held to his ear. He lowered it slowly as he recovered, turning it over to stare at the display. The muscles in his neck began to tense as he did. It spread downward to his shoulders, into his arms. His chest tightened and his jaw clenched; and in a moment of blinding rage, he let out a feral yell as he hurled his phone at the wall. It shattered to pieces and left a hole in the drywall.

He stared at the hole as the corners of his mouth pulled high up his cheeks, almost to his ears, and teeth elongated into rows of long, narrow fangs.

“I hate these fucking kids,” he snarled through his monstrous maw.

There was a pretty clear consensus on this one, which is good because I voted for the winning option myself, and I've long considered it one of the more baffling and out-of-character decisions in the entire Silmarillion. Why on earth did Maedhros go to the parley? I've written more than one fic where I had to actually address this problem, so here's a non-exhaustive list of reasons I've come up with.

The Oath constrained him not to ignore Morgoth's offer. I think this definitely played a part, but it can't possibly have been the only reason why he went, otherwise Morgoth would presumably have played the same trick again and managed to capture more sons of Fëanor at some point or the other. The Oath can obviously be resisted - Maedhros himself held off attacking Sirion for years - so he certainly wasn't magically compelled to go to the parley because of Morgoth's offer.

He genuinely believed that Morgoth wanted to surrender. I don't buy this one. Maedhros wasn't an idiot; he had every reason to distrust Morgoth. Moreover, the silm specifically states that Maedhros "persuaded his brothers to feign to treat with Morgoth, and to meet his emissaries at the place appointed; but the Noldor had as little thought of faith as had he" (emphasis mine). Which leads me to...

He wanted to kill Morgoth's emissaries and further weaken him. This seems to be what the text suggests; despite the death of Fëanor, the Dagor-nuin-Giliath had after all been a resounding victory for the Noldor, so Maedhros thought to press his military advantage. I'm not entirely certain on this one, either. Maedhros was ambushed by Balrogs, who had literally just killed his father. He can't possibly have thought he would be able to defeat them. I think this reasoning played some part in his going, but more in the sense of "it would be nice if we could defeat them" than actually expecting a victory. (I'm not advancing the argument that Maedhros was an excellent military strategist here; at this stage in his life he had very little experience in battle, and there's no evidence to suggest he was a particularly renowned warrior or commander prior to his captivity.)

He knew his father would never have agreed to parley with Morgoth and was actively trying to do the opposite of what Fëanor would have done. This is pure headcanon territory, but I like it. I'm fond of the idea that Maedhros had a complicated relationship with Fëanor and Fëanor's legacy; he had recently openly defied his father at Losgar, so maybe he was doing his best to establish himself as a ruler antithetical to Fëanor. He was level-headed, diplomatic, unaverse to compromise - he would show it by parleying with the Dark Lord himself! I think this highlights some of the most interesting contradictions within Maedhros as a character; he's sensible and politically savvy, but he's also hubristic. The fact that he's noted as persuading his brothers of this (objectively idiotic) plan does also suggest that at least one of them might have told him "wtf you're completely spitting on everything our father stood for" - but maybe that was the point.

He was in suicidal despair. Another very headcanony one, which I like for the angst potential. Maedhros has been having a pretty bad time of it even pre-Angband. If you read Russingon romantically, which I do, he's got no reason to believe he'll ever see the love of his life again; if you subscribe to crispy Amrod canon (which, again, I do), his youngest brother has just died very gruesomely; and, of course, his father has just died and bound them to a terrible purpose while doing so. Maybe, just as Fingolfin did much later, he gave up, and sought a heroic end in battle rather than pursuing his Oath any further. This is obviously deliciously ironic, since instead of dying he was taken captive and tortured for thirty years. It also gives rather nice thematic echoes with Maedhros' later failure to be a great hero, and with his eventual suicide.

Personally, I subscribe to the first, fourth and fifth of these - they were all fun to think about, though!

Round 6 of stupid decisions in the Silmarillion!

"Throwing racial slurs at Dwarves" has won out as Thingol's stupidest decision against a CROWDED field, so next up is another character I've been looking forward to: Maedhros!

This was a really interesting one to make; this poll series is definitely making me think a lot about characters' intent, and also about which characters make significant impacts on the plot. Notably missing from this poll are swearing the Oath itself, because that was in Fëanor's poll and, however you interpret power dynamics and the agency of the sons of Fëanor when they swore it, I think it's fair to say Fëanor was the ringleader there; the Second Kinslaying, since Celegorm was the ringleader for that one so it will be in his poll; and standing aside at Losgar, since that seemed less like a decision by itself and more a reaction to Fëanor's decision - and a mostly ineffectual one, since the political consequences of Maedhros having stood aside couldn't have been foreseen at the time he did it. I also left out searching for Dior's sons and attempting to forswear the Oath pre-Third Kinslaying, since these both ultimately failed and ended up not having much impact on anything other than Maedhros' mental state :(

"Driving out the Orcs from North Beleriand pre-Nirnaeth" might require some explanation. From the Silmarillion: "But Maedhros made trial of his strength too soon, ere his plans were fullwrought; and though the Orcs were driven out of all the northward regions of Beleriand, and even Dorthonion was freed for a while, Morgoth was warned of the uprising of the Eldar and the Elf-friends, and took counsel against them. Many spies and workers of treason he sent forth among them, as he was the better able now to do, for the faithless Men of his secret allegiance were yet deep in the secrets of the sons of Fëanor." According to Tolkien Gateway, this was three years before the Nirnaeth. Since the Nirnaeth was Maedhros' biggest military failure, I tried to break it down into a few separate decisions in the poll.
