Chapter 1 complete! Devilsknife acquired, egg fridged, Toriel flowered, Umyum befriended, topcake exchanged, I think that's everything I need to do.

I hate to say it but playing Deltarune is kind of boring? It's fine for a first playthrough, but the game expects multiple, at LEAST two, to see everything, and it already did the "deliberately a slog" kinda thing in Undertale. In Deltarune it's kinda like that regardless of route, only bosses are actually interesting to fight and regular enemies are just annoying after you've battled them once or twice. I really hope something is introduced to make this game more replayable or it's gonna be annoying when you try to. I already expect the writing of this game to be fantastic but I'm genuinely worried the gameplay won't be able to reach anywhere near those heights and the game will sort of fall flat.

It's like it's taking a two partial sprite sets and mixing them tbh.

Kind of like how in old games some glitches caused different tiles/sprites to take on the appearance/pallet of a different sprite or tile.

It's like something is broken or missing. The first example I can think of is "Wechnia"/*********** from Knuckles' Chaotix

Nobody knew what to make of this character back when it was discovered. It wasn't until recent years that this character was fully understood. The slot this character took up USED to be occupied by Tails in early versions of the game. After Tails data was removed, the character had no sprites for the data to point to, nor did it have a proper pallet, so when the character is loaded in the game uses Knuckles sprites with a corrupted pallet. In the release build the game crashes, but an earlier build still had just enough data that the character could move and even fly.

So getting back to Deltarune, I think the theme that Toby might be going for here has to do with the whole "missing/corrupt data" aspect that a glitch character would have. In this case, "Umyum" is the missing character that the "Clam" spritesets are LOADing in to replace.

It HEAVILY parallels the differences between the interactions in the Castle Town with all Darkners recruited VS having any of them not present, but in a much more eerie way.

From this I can extrapolate two things:

Like Recruiting in the Dark World, players who go out of their way to interact with everyone in the Light World sections will be rewarded with MORE interactions. The game is encouraging players to Become INVESTED in the WORLD, both LIGHT and DARK.

The more of these lore related pieces are missed, the more of these glitched out situations might take their place. Or, perhaps, they might become much more pronounced. Right now it just loads different fully coherent sprites. But eventually we might see glitched pallets and tilesets. We might even get glitched sounds and text as well!

The lessons I'm getting from this: Don't neglect the LIGHT. Don't neglect the DARK. Don't neglect HOPES. Don't Neglect DREAMS.

This World is a wonderful place. Enjoy it.

So whenever you're on a save that doesn't have onionsan (with the dialogue about the song from the sea) you get clam guy standing there and saying they won't turn up today, right? I just noticed something weird about him...

... When facing away, that isn't clamguy. His sprite is still purple and green from behind.

While facing away, that's clamgirl.

I don't know what this means, but as a fun value npc in undertale who also happens to talk about a 'suzy' and who becomes clam goner in the switch version sometimes, it strikes me as a lil extra strange. Not to mention the fact that pipis are clams... And she's a blue clam..?
