Stop five on my Raleigh nature tour: Umstead State Park! I love that you can easily move from the Art Museum to Prairie Ridge to Schenck Forest to Umstead simply by following a greenway! So much green space in this area. One thing I most enjoy about Umstead is their interest in educating people about bats. Bats have a bad reputation, but they are incredibly important animals that eat a lot of insects and/or pollinate plants. We as humans would be worse off without them! Umstead has a bat box outside their visitor’s center (I’m assuming because the used to have a colony attached to the building!) that helps provide their local bats with the right conditions they need for nesting and forming a colony. Bat researchers these days have to be incredibly careful when handling bats so they don’t spread white nose syndrome to any uninfected bats. White nose had absolutely decimated bat populations in the eastern US as it spreads easily through colonies when an infected bat brings the fungus back to the roost. In some bat species, 90% of the population has been destroyed by white nose - it’s a serious problem! But happily, some species are beginning to recover and will hopefully pass some good white nose resistant genes down to their offspring. Want to participate in bat citizen science? Try Bat Detective! For this project, you listen to sound recordings and mark bat sounds, insect sounds, and other sounds so researchers can learn more about how bats use sound and track their abundance based on their vocalizations.
