Various Umihara Kawase animation scans, using the “Together Forever...” concept book
#Umihara Kawase#海腹川背#PlayStation#turnaround#Backstory: Shun's sprite animation was done using copic markers turned digitized sprites ala Donkey Kong Country creating it's unique style#...then six months later they released the artbook that published the de-digitized sprites but in greyscale alongside the ending storyboard#And it is my personal theory that despite the game being 27 years old they could “remaster” Shun with these original drawings#...as they were shown fully colorized in StrictlyLimited's artbook from 2017#and by theory I mean I would give anything for a remastered Shun

Umihara Kawase Shun featured two new mechanics that were scrapped during development: a wall kick, and wall climb. These made it far enough into the game's development that illustrations were created for them, along with stages making use of them.

Is it just me or could “PlayStation 1″ be it’s own genre of music? Like, there’s this certain sound that’s pretty much only heard in PS1 games, maybe some Saturn or Dreamcast games too, and it’s not based on hardware limitations given that many of these games use CD audio. It’s not in all PS1 games, but like, the PS1 2D Mega Man games, Jumping Flash, Umihara Kawase Shun, and Klonoa would be my examples.

Since my husband and I have been on the road for most of the year, and because we technically no longer have an address of our own (we sold our home in Seattle at the end of last year), I’ve had a lot of game purchases shipped to my parents’ house.
The photo above showcases some of the Japanese games I’ve bought and sent my parents’ way over the last few months. If you’re curious to know their titles, here they are:
The lone Japanese 3DS game is Sayonara! Hako Boy!
The Nintendo DS games are Game Center CX 2, Meccha! Taiko no Tatsujin DS: 7-tsu no Shima no Daibouken, RIZ-ZOAWD and Umihara Kawase Shun: Second Edition Kanzenban.
The PSP game is Parodius Portable.
The GameCube game is Kyojin no Doshin (aka Doshin the Giant).
The WonderSwan games are Cho Aniki: Otoko no Tamafuda, Gunpey, Lode Runner for WonderSwan and Rhyme Rider Kerorican.
Also, there’s a PC Engine game you can’t see: Daichikun Crisis: Do Natural :)
I’ll eventually publish posts about all of the above-mentioned games, of course, but if you can’t wait to see photos of their outer boxes and cases, virtually flip through their instruction manuals, or simply learn more about their gameplay, you should check out the “Nice Package!” and “Manual Stimulation” posts already available on my more traditional gaming blog.

[Review] Kaban-chan Chirari (PC)
Ah, another Umihara Kawase fangame I didn’t know about! Sweet!
Much like Ganbare Natsuki-san, this is a Japanese doujin tribute to the UK series. Unfortunately it follows more traditional doujin distribution channels, via CD-ROM sales, so it’s a little harder to get ahold of. But it’s a very pleasing recreation of the UK formula. Oh, and since the creator is a fan, it also skins the game with characters from the Kemono Friends animal-girl media property. Why not??
It seems to follow in the footsteps of the Shun instalment specifically, with its art style of digitised photo backgrounds, 3D level geometry, and drawn character sprites. There are no enemies or moving platforms, but there is the occasional appearance of another Kemono Friend to interact with; for example, a jumping cat character you can grapple onto that will drag you along. The wire is long, and the controls feel very good; perhaps my skills have also improved after playing all the games, but I found getting around these levels to be within my ability... to a point.
The structure is that of the first two UK games: get through a stage by hooking and swinging from the abstract landscape, with different doors taking you on different routes. There’s a complex map I’m sure, but thankfully no lives system so you can keep on retrying. Normal doors (tyres in this case) are blue, alternate exits are red, so it’s easier to track your route. These routes always end with a final level where you’re required to get the extra collectible: some kind of creature from Kemono Friends instead of the backpack from UK.
What’s nice though is that levels are broken up into categories, which makes runs much more manageable (there’s also the stage replay function for any levels you’ve reached). There’s the tutorial set, normal, and difficult, then the 1.2 update added another “normal” set and a set to train you on advanced techniques. I played almost all the normal levels, but couldn’t clear even the first hard one to see any more.
Which is fine. These kinds of fangames tend to assume you’re familiar with their inspiration and build from there, but I was pleased that so much of the game was within my grasp since I could only ever do about half the levels in the classic games. And as with those games, the skill ceiling is high; the trailer itself should show you that flashy movement is very possible. Not for me though!

Today the Umihara Kawase games returned to Steam after having been taken down after Agatsuma Entertaiment closed its doors in 2015. As such, I figured there was no better way to celebrate on this blog than to look at how the encounters with Tadpole has evolved over the years.
You can grab the Umihara Kawase Trilogy here!
