Aurora: I'm just trying to help-
Orion: Not wan you a hel!
Sara: Sorry, Ryan can you say that again? Slowly, and focus on getting that last sound on your words.
Orion: I. Wanna. Smard. ... Cuz I dumb.
Sara: You're not dumb, sweetheart. You just find talking a little tricky-
Orion: An' weadin', an' wighin', an umbus, an'... an'... an' all da fing!
Sara: Well, I know they've opened up a new Education Centre in Widespot. Why don't we check it out - it sounds to me like a place where you could do some learning in a fun way.
Orion: Yeah. Go dere!
Aurora: Can I come?
Orion: No, Wory! Me not wan you!
Penn: You and me already had a trip out, didn't we, Rory? Why don't we let this be Ryan's thing with Granny?
Aurora: Yeah, okay.
Orion: Who you?
Tommy: My name's Mr Ottomas.
Orion: You boss?
Tommy: Yeah, I'm the boss.
Orion: You hel me a be smard?
Tommy: Hi Charlie - do you want to listen to the story too?
Orion: Issa goodun!
Possibly having the TV as backround knowledge isn't all that helpful...
Hey, this game has the words on the screen and it reads them to him!
Back home, they all had breakfast together and then Sara took Orion to the Education Centre in Widespot.

The Pantheon universe, a summary
What is the Pantheon universe?
Pantheon is a series of mythological stories that take place from approximately 3000 BCE to 1200 BCE in the area known in modern times as SWANA (Southwest Asia and North Africa).
The stories assume the existence of each ancient culture’s deities while taking into account the historical conflicts between those cultures, resulting in a kind of “historical mythology” where historical conflict reflects upon the divine realm (E.G.: the Egyptian pantheon fighting the Hittite pantheon and allies in the Battle of Kadesh story).

Is there any information about Mukishanu outside of his roles in the Song of Hedammu and Song of Ulikummi? I'm assuming there's little to nothing, but but I'm curious either way.
There indeed isn’t much otherwise. As far as I am aware, the brief survey given by Gernot Wilhelm in the Reallexikon is still up to date.
All of the available attestations of Mukishanu come from Hattusa - from Hurrian or at least Hurrian-adjacent sources. The bulk of them are passages from Song of Hedammu and Song of Ullikummi, plus some which according to Wilhelm cannot be placed in either with certainty but belong to the same cycle at the very least. As far as I know, none of these ever go beyond the usual formula “Kumarbi repeats a message he wants to send, Mukishanu leaves to deliver it”.
On top of the literary sources there is a single ritual text which mentions Mukishanu, a list of offerings connected with the cult of Shaushka of Samuha (CTH 712). It’s a peculiar oddity in that every single deity listed in the relevant passage is a sukkal, and explicitly identified as such. I’m not aware of any parallels to this from any part of the “cuneiform world”. The ritual is not very informative, though, it just repeats the formula “a flatbread for x sukkal of y”. No reason is given for gathering attendant deities like that. Perhaps they’re unionizing or something.
More under the cut, including some speculation.
Wilhelm doesn’t discuss CTH 712 beyond Mukishanu’s appearance in it, but it’s not hard to find a full list of the deities invoked, for example here, p. 370: Undurumma (Shaushka’s), Tenu (Teshub’s), Mukishanu (Kumarbi’s), Izzumi (ie. Mesopotamian Isimu/Usmu; Ea’s); Lipparuma (Shimige’s) and Ḫupuštukar (Ḫešui’s). Most of them are relatively well attested, but there are two peculiarities: Undurumma is pretty much unattested otherwise (in the overwhelming majority of ritual and literary texts and in visual arts Shaushka almost invariably appears with Ninatta and Kulitta, so you’d expect them to have this role, but nope) and Ḫešui is himself quite rare so learning he was major enough to have an attendant is quite surprising (granted, there is a theory he was worshiped more commonly earlier on or in different Hurrian communities as these which influenced the Hattusa archive). It also strikes me as odd that Hebat and Takitu are missing.
The only other information about Mukishanu comes from the etymology of his name. While he is attested exclusively in Hurrian and Hurro-Hittite sources, his name actually comes from a Semitic language (I am not aware of any more precise attempts at identification) and means something like “he from Mukish”. This term referred to the area around Alalakh. As discussed here (p.3 ) by Alfonso Archi, it essentially underwent cultural “Hurrianization”: by the fourteenth century, about three fourths of its inhabitants mentioned in textual sources bore Hurrian names, and the ritual text CTH 780 mentions an apparently famous Hurrian expert from Mukish, a certain ms. Allaituraḫḫi. The calendar was seemingly Hurrian too, though with one month name - Pagri - goes back to an Akkadian term (pagrum, a ceremony for the dead).
We don’t have much in the way of religious texts from Alalakh. The local pantheon attested in royal documentation was discussed briefly in Volkert Haas’ Geschichte der hethitischen Religion (p. 556-557). There is evidence for Teshub, Ishara/Shaushka/Ishtar (the writing is logographic and notoriously hard to untangle in this case; I think the evidence for Ishara is the strongest), Hebat, Kubaba, Umbu (a moon god or at least a name of the Hurrian moon god) and earth and heaven. There is also at least one reference to the worship of Kumarbi as well, and to a temple of a deity named Kūbi, see here, p. 207. Mukishanu is notably absent, though, and I haven’t really seen any proposals regarding this state of affairs. I personally see two possible solutions: Mukishanu was an epithet or generic designation which developed into a separate deity; or alternatively he represented the image of inhabitants of Alalalkh in the eyes of another group (much like how Amurru was not actually an Amorite god despite his name). However, this is just my own speculation. It’s also worth noting that Gary Beckman at least seems to imply he assumes Mukishanu was actually worshiped in Alalakh or somewhere nearby, since he counts his presence in the Kumarbi cycle as an argument for seeking its origin across Upper Mesopotamia and northern Syria rather than in Anatolia here (p. 25).

I feel like I'm seeing a lot of very US and Europe-centric hyperspecific polls at the moment (recent highlights include "never been to Disney" and "never been on holiday outside of Europe" as possible answers), and to a certain extent that's fair enough, that's where a lot of tumblr users live.
But I would really like to encourage people who live everywhere else in the world to channel the same energy in their hyperspecific polls. Maybe "I've been teaching the veena for 5+ years" or "I have an umbu tree in my back garden" or "I have touched 2 or more species of marsupial".
I just think it would be fun.

Jamais esquecerei.

FFXIVWrite 2023 Prompt 26: Last
Cynthia's mother taught her a few songs that were so old, nobody remembered what the words meant anymore.
But she didn't realize just how old the songs were.
(The second part of this takes place during my post-ShB EmetWoL AU)
“Mama, mama! Play the pretty song again!”
Her mother giggles, reaching out a hand to mess up the young Viera’s hair. “Which one, kitten? You call all of the songs I play pretty.”
“The last one, with the funny words! I wanna learn it!”
“You remember it’s a duet, right?”
“Then teach me all the lyrics!”
Laughing again, the older Viera puts both hands back on the lute. “Very well. I’ll teach you the main part first. But this is the last song I’m playing before you go to sleep.”
Kuwata tsuno wovalai
Tsurizhi pura alekai
Kondəvain umbu fərtun blonnuwail
Shurtətei chegi hiato
-years later, on the First-
Emet-Selch is in utter shock. Of course, his eyes don’t turn away from where Cynthia’s hands delicately pluck the strings of the lyre he created, but he can barely believe his ears.
She’s singing in Amaurotine.
Singing a song he hasn’t heard in over twelve thousand years.
Barely able to wait until the last note fades out, he quietly asks, “Didn’t you say this was a song from your home?”
She nods, still plucking the strings absent-mindedly. “Yeah, my mom taught it to me when I was really little. She didn’t know what the lyrics meant, though. So I don’t either.”
“...I know that song.”
At this, she puts down her instrument and looks up at him, tilting her head. “But you told me you’d never actually interacted with Viera before.”
“I haven’t. Cynthia, that song is from before the world was sundered.”
“...Oh.” Awkwardly laughing, she adds “I guess that’s why nobody remembered what the lyrics meant. I was told it was one of our older songs, but… I didn’t think it was that old. I… think one of the others I was taught was in the same language, if you’d like to hear it?”
He nods, and she picks her instrument back up.
Sjool paran moy'hi
Ar jar'ruk noy' sin
Dha gya'left tal fooyryuu
Malich fuide aslaat erensboiye
---
Both songs are from NieR, the first being Song of the Ancients, and the second being Kaine / Salvation.
I know that logically the language they spoke before the world was sundered was Latin, but like... the song is called Song of the Ancients. I had to. Also I cannot help putting references to NieR into everything I do

Ok ive decided i hate my job (not new) and i hate the dumbass students at my university (also not new. Entire campus chock full with blond dreadlocks and lederhosen), theres no grad student culture here and im too old to be hanging out with bachelor students who dont know anything (the central european university system is trash and also only 3 years) and have seen exactly their 100km of the world (plus or minus that one trip to se asia that umbued in them such insufferable arrogance) and whose definition of activism begins and ends with throwing a solidarity party (where the donations pay first for the cost of buying booze instead of actually going to a cause)...
But i digress (read: lost my train of thought partway through ranting about these provincial snobs). What im trying to say is besides hating my university and most of the idiots in it, i think im just done with the student scene in general like im sick and tired of being at the mercy of the exam schedule, and the peter pan never wanting to face the real world mentality of everybody there. I need to be surrounded by people looking forward not trying depserately to cling to a moment that may already have passed
#torn between trying to finish as fast as possible#and trying to use my student status to do interesting things even though it would push back finding full time employment#i think once i quit my shitty job amd get a better temporary one ill have the patience to wait for things to work out well#got damn i gotta quit#but in the meantime i gotta go now to work a surprise party shift at the bar#but i feel like ass and it was just supposed to be a quiet monday#instead ots a party on the first day back from break#im crying#they even asked me to come in early (paid) but holy fuck i dont want to do this#so im taking dabs fuck it

Imagine that our world has had a divergence once upon a time, and what once was one realm has been split into two: the Realm of Magic; and then ours, the Realm of Science.
Both realms are still connected, though very scarcely. One day a group of mages travels through the Fabric of the Void to our realm, having bested many hardships to be here. And they're here for one purpose:
"For fuck's sake, you have to stop sciencing!"
It turns out that the more one realm practises their craft, the further away the two realms drift from each other. Which takes the remnants of the other craft still lingering with it.
We don't notice it too much because we are used to ignoring the bit of magic we see to such a degree that most people don't even realise that magic is real.
But for the mages it's whole different problem! Don't get them wrong, it's amazing that we can build a fire with such some stick coated in stuff that we strike against something else coated in some other stuff. It's fascinating and very cool that we don't have to rely on a coin that is umbued with a fire spell that one has to be careful about not spending on accident because it looks just like any other coin.
But! What do you mean, we have left our planet? What do you mean that we have walked on our moon?? What do you mean we are planning to SETTLE on Mars???
Yeah no, we cannot do that. The mages are adamant about that. When questioned about why, they explain that people and things no longer being quite as attached to the ground as they used to be is very helpful when you want to move heavy stuff, but...
"If I have to fish my very light and very anxious chihuahua out of a tree one more time, I'm gonna start going Chant of Penis Explosion on all your asses!"

Khonsu, god of the moon, healing, and childhood
Eternally a brat who refuses to grow up - literally, Khonsu keeps himself eternally young by regenerating his appearance during the new moon. As Daddy's Little Prince (being the son of Amun and all, whose power has only been escalating), Khonsu is incredibly spoiled and likes to entertain himself by hassling others for attention, with Djehuty and Montu usually getting the brunt of his pestering.
Khonsu is a contradictory fella who is not only childish and naive but also extremely violent, sometimes with little provocation as he really enjoys sparring and wants to be a war god. As an astral deity, he can move at quick speeds, but he is ultimately a glass canon that crumples the moment he gets hit. Not that this ever deters him from trying again!
Khonsu is also deathly protective of children and will lash out at anyone harming a child. This was useful when Heru was a child in need of protection, but now that Heru is grown and the pantheon's divine king... Khonsu presents a constant threat to Heru's kingship. While the line of kingship descending from Ra seems secure, there's no promise it will be forever.
Highlights in his life include:
growing up alongside Nefertem, the god of beauty, forming a close bond with the Memphite deity until Nefertem tried to date him, which ultimately blew up their friendship. Despite this, Khonsu still wears purple thanks to Nefertem's early influence.
Khonsu is one of the few deities with the balls to challenge Ra when he thinks he's wrong. It usually doesn't end well for Khonsu, but one could never say he isn't brave
Very restless during the nights and constantly moving around to patrol the borders of Kemet. It's rare that something happens at night without Khonsu noticing, except during the new moon when he sleeps for a few days uninterrupted to regenerate.
Khonsu has very strict sleep schedule boundaries and goes right to bed at sunrise when Khepri emerges from Duat. He wakes up in the early evening and will raise chaos if expected to come out in the daylight.
He knows the other pantheons' moon gods very well and is frienemies with Umbu, a Hurrian god from Alalakh. He also likes to bully Kašku, the Hattic moon god and steal Nanna's (Sumerian moon god) cakes when he isn't looking.
