Still not understanding how Mal got the title of protector of Auradon because she turned into a dragon and spit fire at an octopus in water. Not only that dumbass fight but literally every time she turned into a dragon she never actually won a fight, even at the end of D3 she was struggling till Uma stepped in.

According to the Book Disney Descendants: Up Close! Mal was born in 1999.
She was 6 years old when she wasn’t invited to Evie’s 6th Birthday Party, which took place 10 years after all the villains were banished to the Island. Which places it in 2005. (Isle of The Lost Novel)
That means that That Auradon was created in 1995.
It also means that Rise of Red takes place in 2025.

doing a half-assed rewatch of D2 as i work on a fic but. a thought on the Cotillian fashions--
Uma's dress is much more complimentary of Ben's. She has the gold, in jewelry and accents, and the military-esque epaulets which compliment Ben's gold and military-esque jacket. They're both in mostly blue, sleek looks.
They feel coordinated and intentional, presenting a united but independent front/pairing.
Mal's dress, especially before her transformation (dragon and literal), is very... individual. Obviously part of her journey over the course of this movie is to learn how to balance two parts of herself.
But the complete juxtaposition of her dress next to Ben's really speaks to the way their relationship plays out. She has no gold, no blue. She has yellow and purple (and later purple and black and green). The yellow is the same yellow that Belle wears, rather than anything that Ben is wearing. She has voluminous skirts that take up space, literally separating her from her friends and from Ben.
Mal does not compromise with Ben, does not compromise her chosen identities. She maintains her individuality, even if it isolates her.
Staying true to yourself is a good message for a regular relationship, but as rulers, not as much.
And of course, Uma and Ben's coordination can speak to the spell Uma has Ben under. But both their costumes are true to their characters without any huge adjustments, where for Mal to match Ben it would have to be a very different dress.
So just some thoughts on how Mal and Uma are presented in juxtaposition to Ben at Cotillion.

Ben started off bringing over the VKs he thought needed help the most, but how did he figure that out? He didn't know anything about how life was on the Isle, so it couldn't be based on how their parents treat them. So it probably had to be on who had the most villainous parents (the most bad influence)
So he chooses the kids of a powerful dark fairy who almost took down a kingdom, and Evil Queen skilled in potions, a Royal Vizier turned genie who almost took down a kingdom, and, a lady who had beef with a bunch of dogs?
(I mean don't get me wrong, Cruella sucks and what she was planning to do to the puppies is evil, but it's not exactly on the kingdom threatening level the other three are (and therefore their kids are in danger of becoming))
So what if Carlos gets left behind and another villain's kid goes in his place
A villain who had unspeakable powers and tried to take down a kingdom
Like Ursula
What if the four VKs who go to Auradon are Mal, Evie, Jay, and Uma
Sea Three and Core Four have to call a truce. They still don't like each other, but they have to trust their members with each other. Core doesn't attack Uma and have her back while they're all vulnerable if Harry, Gil, and the crew watch over Carlos
(Because what's the rooming now? Jay alone and the 3 girls together? They'd have to trust each other enough to have each others' backs while they sleep)
But maybe somewhere in Auradon, as they're choosing good, Uma and the others become friends?
And maybe the crew develops a soft spot for Carlos and he finds himself actually trusting them and they actually take care of him?
Plus there's the question of Descendants 2. Mal, Evie, and Jay, along with Uma this time, still choose good, but do the Core Four Three still forget about the Isle with one of their crew still there? Does Uma fall into the same trap as the Core Four did and forget the Isle once she's safe on Auradon? Especially with the rest of her crew there?

sometimes i just sit and think about that how good descendants story could be. how it could be about that not everything is black or white, that there are multiple shades of grey when it comes to morality. but then, i'm getting hit by the fact that descendants is just another classist story

The first chapter out now of a new mini story I made set in the same universe as my Legacy of Youth: Descendants Unleashed story in which 3 year old Mal gets really sick on the Isle and there’s no real healthcare. 💜💙

Mal is bisexual but Maleficent was homophonic.
She liked Uma so she bullied her and called her Shrimpy to fight her feelings
She liked Mad Maddy so she poured bleach in her hair and bullied her to hide her feelings
She liked Evie and was hurt when she wasn’t invited to her party, so when she got out, she tortured her to fight her feelings. Then Doug came along

Summary: Strong hands catch him as he stumbles. “Harry?” someone says. They sound familiar, so he knows somewhere in the back of his mind that it must be a crew member from the Lost Revenge.
Other voices follow, but he has little ability to focus on that when it feels like his ears are about to explode–- burning like they’re on fire. The warm hands of his crew mate leave him and it feels like the ground is moving up to meet him as he loses his balance completely.
Then, just as suddenly as it starts, it ends. His ears no longer feel like they’re on fire, the world realigns, steady once again, and Harry shakes his head a bit as he comes back to himself– on the ground.
Elongated points to his ears meet his wandering fingers. He questions it for only a few seconds before it dawns on him that this was what his father was afraid of, what he had been carefully hiding for all these years.
Not my work.

I am slightly miffed about unrelated things: here’s some descendants headcannons
-if a version Rupaul’s Drag race exists in Auradon- Evie watches it solely for the design challenges and Jay will occasionally watch with her because he finds the lipsync for your life entertaining
-they complain about judges critiques together and Jay has a bias for any queen who can do acrobatics
-Gil sews (which is cannon- see Uma’s wicked book) so he ends up taking up a part time apprenticeship with Evie
-Harry has his sisters’ names tattooed over his heart. He didn’t tell anyone, but the lost revenge crew found out because of one of the massive holes in his shirt happened to act as a frame for the tattoos whenever his coat isn’t on
-once he comes to Auradon, he starts modeling for Evie and more people end up finding out about the tattoos and he ends up gaining a reputation in Auradon as a “bad but sad boy” which he has decided not to question…there are numerous fan edits
-while working his way through Vet school, Carlos ends up becoming royal tech support because king beast has zero clue how to use any form of technology and Ben has gotten tired of trying to explain it
-Gil adopted a dog during his and Jay’s travel around the world
-now he and Jay share custody of a perpetually angry looking Pomsky they named Scout
-they go on hiking trips together with Scout as family bonding time
- Mal still gets strawberries as fan gifts and gifts from other royals- castle beast now has a strawberry cellar to compensate for the overflow
-eventually the cellar became so full the “Auradon strawberry festival” was created to get rid of them. This has become an annual event, held the week after Mal’s birthday
- Mal also dresses up lizard Maleficent for special events with Gil and Evie making her little hats to put on the former mistress of evil
-Hades also partakes in this as a way to get back at his ex-wife
- As the unofficial “Queen of the Isle” Uma has to go to royal events, she brings Harry because he keeps the more annoying royals away by simply being himself
-Uma also comes in full pirate captain getup to these events for no other reason than she thinks the looks people give her when she walks into a room with a pirate’s hat and cutlass with Harry Hook on her arm are funny

GLAAAASSSSSHEAAAART INCORRECT QUOTESSSSSS. because I missed them (long?)
(and other ships)
Red: You’d be stupid to lay a hand on me.
Chloe: Oh, you’d be surprised how much stupid shit I do.
(Fight of our lives basically)
---
Red: Love is weakness and an evolutionary mistake.
Mal: You are literally making a Valentine’s day card for Chloe.
Red, pointing their hot glue gun towards Mal: You’re on thin fucking ice.
(canon)
-now Chloe and her Mentor-
Chloe: How do I make a date really romantic?
Evie: Be mysterious.
Chloe: Okay!
*later, while on a date with Red*
Red: So where are we going?
Chloe: None of your fucking business.
(Red teases her about it on their next dates)
---
Mal: Evie, I know you love Chloe. I mean, we all do, they’re a very nice person and I respect them immensely.
Mal: But I think they might be a fucking idiot.
(she's the smartest dumbass. or dumbest smartass?)
---
Red: How do you know how to kiss? Like who teaches you?
Chloe: Well it’s actually a class, but unfortunately it’s full right now.
Chloe: Would you like me to tutor you?
Evie: That was smooth.
(Evie is proud. Mal is losing 20 bucks. why? Bet)
---
Red: Do you want to know your gay name?
Chloe: My... my gay name?
Red: Yeah, it's your first name-
Chloe: Haha. Very funny Red-
Red: *gets down on one knee* And my last name.
Chloe: Oh- oh my god.
(Mal, proud: Now that was smooth)
---
Mal: Why are you guys acting like this?
Red: Oh, we're not acting. We really are like this.
(sigh)
---
Evie: Mal? I mixed redbull with coffee and now I can see sounds, should I worry?
Mal: Evie, I swear to god—
(Evie. Stop doing that. You need sleep don't overwork yourself. I love her Qvq)
---
Kidnapper: I have your partner.
Mal: What? I don't have a partner...
Kidnapper: Then who just called me a lowlife bitch and spit in my face?
Mal: Oh my god, you have Evie.
(the good old Isle days)
---
Celia : I am a ninja.
Mal: No, you’re not.
Celia : Did you see me do that?
Mal: Do what?
Celia : Exactly.
(canon)
---
Mal: Hey, can you do me a favor?
Celia : Sorry, I have to go do literally anything other than this.
Mal: You don’t even have a legitimate reason?
Celia : Oh, no, I do.
Mal: Well, what is it?
Celia : You see, I simply don’t give a fuck.
(she loves to annoy Mal. Little annoying sister. Canon)
---
Celia: We’ve found the person who stole your identity and was impersonating you.
Dizzy: Where were they?
Celia: Eating cheetos and crying in their car.
Dizzy, impressed: Damn, they really went for it.
(it was Uma, wasn't it? That's literally canon XD)
---
Celia: Here comes the lightning!
Celia, whispering: You've got to imagine it coming out my fingertips, wherein I am an almighty wizard.
Dizzy: Ok, currently imagining that. Hmm, not bad. Not bad at all.
(and they were roommates, your Honor) (wow they were roommates) (The bestest of friends)
---
Red: N... No!
Celia: A fair rebuttal. However, consider this counterpoint: Y... Yes???
(Red is trying to deny her crush on Chloe. Ha.)
---
Dizzy: What, I can’t be in a bad mood? It’s like people think, “Oh, Dizzy is such a nice person, Dizzy is so happy-go-lucky! Dizzy can’t be in a bad mood!” Well, you know what? Dizzy CAN be in a bad mood. And right now, Dizzy IS be in a bad mood.
(Yas Queen. Queen of Mean? So last season. Queen of Bad Mood? So in!)
---
Mal: You tricked me!
Audrey: I deceived you. ‘Trick’ makes it sound like we have a friendly relationship.
(Maybe Queen of Mean isn't so last season.)
---
Dizzy: Comparing Audrey and Mal is like comparing apples and oranges.
Mal: We’re both unique in our own ways?
Dizzy: Apples are superior in every way and all oranges should be eliminated.
Audrey: Which one of us is the orange? (It's me, isn't it?)
(Damn Dizzy. Queen of Bad Mood taking the lead)
---
*the squad is at a dinner party but someone has been murdered*
Chloe: You’re acting pretty carefree for someone who’s life’s at stake. Who’s to say you aren’t the killer?
Evie: It’s a murder, not a tax audit. I’ll be fine.
Red: What about Dizzy? Nobody ever suspects Dizzy!
Dizzy: Well what about Audrey? They have a gun!
Audrey: Celia has a knife.
Celia : Yeah, for fun, not for murder! *stabs Red in the arm*
(where is Uma? oh-. I bet it was Audrey. How else do you show you love someone? They are having their Killing Eve moment)
---
Audrey: You’re such a dumbass (affectionate).
Uma: Aww, you’re such a whore (complimentary).
Mal: How are you talking like that in real life?
Uma: Witchcraft (derogatory).
(canon. They late/hove each other)
---
Dizzy, talking about Evie: They're trying to lure me into a false sense of security! Well, joke’s on them! I’ve never been secure in my life! And I’m not about to start now!
(before Evie got through to her on the Isle 🥲)
---
Mal: *running towards Celia with open arms*
Celia: *moves out of the way*
Mal: Hey, why'd you move?!
Celia: I thought you were going to attack me.
Mal: I was going to hug you!
Celia: Why would you hug me?
Mal: WHY WOULD I ATTACK YOU!?
(OOF. Lol)
---
Celia : I love being right. It’s one of my favorite personality traits.
(yuh)
---
Mal: Wow, this sucks. I’m gonna kill *remembers that suicide jokes only worsen your mental health and that the first step to healing is stopping* you.
(she's getting there. Go queen)
-will add more of the boys in the next one-
Carlos: Are you laughing at that video of Ben and Harry fighting?
Jay: No.
Jay: I'm laughing at the comments.
(the comments saying "Ha! Gaaaay" etc.)
---
Carlos: You don't need my blessing to go kiss Jay. In fact, I was pretty sure you were already kissing Jay!
Gil: Nope.
Carlos: In that case, as the archbishop of Gil's fully awakened gaydom, I give you my blessing to immediately leave and rectify that as soon as possible! Go now, my child, and kiss Jay right on the lips!!!
(Damn Carlos. Yes. Thanks for helping Gil. Everyone needs Carlos as a best friend)
---
Harry: How are we supposed to put a tracker the size of a penny on Jay without them noticing?
Gil: Hey, Jay, I bet you 5 bucks that you can't swallow this penny.
Jay: *takes and swallows tracker* Pay up, loser.
Harry: ...
(same Harry, same. But then again not that surprised)
---
Now this is for @corgiplays for context here
Chloe: Earl, I sense hostility.
Earl: Good, because I hate you.
(accurate?)
---
Earl, entering the room: *Sees Chloe and leaves*
Chloe, watching Earl leave: There’s my monthly dose of the Cat…
(Earl didn't leave before pushing one of Chloe's things tho)
---
Chloe: We just ate. Why are you making pancakes?
Red: For the dogs.
Chloe: Why are you making pancakes for the dogs?
Red: They don't know how.
(I want Red to be able to cook lol. That can't even be a headcanon tho, that has to be an AU lol)
---
Earl: Just so everyone knows, don't ever try to climb a tree at night carrying a strobe light, owls DON'T like it.
Biscuit: ...what happened?
Earl: I made a VERY bad mistake.
(Oof)
---
Biscuit: Don’t be sad!
Red: Why not?
Biscuit:
Biscuit: I don’t have a good answer.
(Red acts like she can understand him. Imagine his responses lol. But she basically can)
---
Chloe: When I first met you, I did not like you.
Earl: I'm aware of that.
Chloe: But then you and I had some time together.
Earl: Uh-huh?
Chloe: It did not get better.
(It did. Stop lying. Also Chloe does the same thing as Red. I mean honestly who doesn't talk to their little furry friends.)
---
Red: You don't know anything about me!
Biscuit: I know EVERYTHING about you! You are an open book written for very dumb children!
(Damn. If Red could actually understand him she'd be flabbergasted)
--and just because I love it so much. Here is that one again
Chloe, gently nudging Earl aside with their foot: Earl, move out of the way so I don’t trip on you.
Earl, her eyes enormous: You kick Cat? You kick their body like the football? Oh! Oh! Jail for Chloe! Jail for Chloe for one thousand years!
(she is purposely laying in the way tho. And then acts like Chloe hurt her when Red hears her distressed meows)
---
That's it
Hope you liked it.

No because let’s really truly talk about the fact that Uma was martyred by Mal, which made her a piriah on the isle, mix that with the fact she had smelly hair and was tiny in stature and fast foward to her being a pirate queen with great social standing and badass reputation, her own turf, a whole ass devoted crew, her own ship, and being the one to fully liberate the entire isle, ike she’s truly that girl and let’s also talk about how through it all, Harry was the only one there for her, THE ENTIRE TIME.
They dedicated their whole lives to each other and their goal to be free and they did it 🥹😊😎

i'm ranting about descendants again and this is a long one
Alright, I talked a little bit about this on twitter literally yesterday (https://x.com/amethxxt/status/1798768561613361458) but I wanted to do it here too, so here we are!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think everyone has seen these pictures by now. It's from Descendants new book "The World of Auradon: Royals & Villains".
Now, at first, I got really excited (in a way, I still am) because it'll probably give me more material to use in my fics. Also, Uma looks absolutely stunning, so I immediately began reading her page and... Well, it's not the nicest things, right?
Like I said on twitter, I can't be the only one who sees the majorly different ways they talk about Uma and Mal.
With Mal, they start saying she's a "confident natural leader", and like- no, she's not, far from it.
I think the best version we got from Mal was on D1. She was such a good character and that's when I think the writers succeded the most with her - I believe it was hard to find someone who actively disliked or simply hated her.
When D2 came out, things went slightly downhill. Mal's inner conflict of not being the picture perfect Lady of the Court and feeling that the odd one out because she wasn't doing well in Auradon when compared to her friends is very realistic.
The pressure that she was feeling to be perfect and all the new things that came with being the King's girlfriend makes you understand why she was so anxious and wanted to leave. Now, I think we should all understand that this makes Mal a very insecure person.
She's insecure, she's flawed and runs away the first chance she gets because everything becomes too much. And if they wrote her like that, how is she a confident natural leader?
When the Core Four and Ben go after her, it's when things begin to change. Mal has a few moments in this movie: running away and leaving just a note to her best friend, claiming Dizzy was going to be fine when Evie felt sorry about leaving a child in the abusive place they all grew up in, betraying Uma's trust. Yeah.
I'm gonna make it very clear that I really like Mal as a character. I criticize her a lot because the writers started putting her in a pedestal, overpowering her and trying to erase anything that could be seen as bad.
Why would they have Mal apologize for using a love spell on Ben when they make such a cute couple and would be endgame anyways?
It gets worse in D3. I remember watching them announce that Hades was Mal's father and being like "No fucking way" because you want this girl to be not only half-fairy but a half-god?? Was this the only way to have his ember in the story?
Well, I think we got used to that plot after a while, but then - Oh, Mal's also Lady of the Court, she'll be a part of the decisions that concern the Isle of the Lost and a voice for the other VKs.
Yes, Mal is "a confident natural leader" who turns her back on her people and comes up to the idea of closing the Barrier for good to protect Auradon citizens.
Why do they refuse to bring up the fact that it was her idea?? Nevermind the fact that her and Ben weren't married yet, she was not the Queen and had absolutely no power to make that decision. They make Ben so useless, a King with no voice because he's not the main character, right?
So she makes a decision that's not up to her and proceeds to lie to all of her friends, makes empty promisses to both Celia and Uma, and when shit hits the fan, nothing happens.
Having Evie confront her about it is one of my favorite scenes, but what are the consequences? I understand that it was the final movie, but it's so rushed that makes everyone else feel out of character.
Mal and Evie can be the best of friends, but you can't tell me Mal would be like "I was wrong, I have to be a voice for everyone and I shouldn't have lied" and Evie would be just "Ok, perf".
And what about the opposite? When Mal betrays Uma for probably the third time, Uma has no trouble forgiving her? Of course they don't mention what happens in the books, they don't mention Mal trying to hurt Evie (or even get her killed lol) and they don't mention the "shrimpy" incident with Uma.
They don't talk about Mal's wrong doings the same way they talk about Uma.
Uma, according to the new book, is a "confident and resourceful VK with a major mean streak". Sorry, Uma has a mean streak? I don't think so. What Disney and Descendants keep doing is use the definition of a villain for a character who's an antagonist.
Villains have malicious intentions, they are evil. You're gonna tell me the girl who simply wants for all the children to get off the Isle, a place they were forced to live in along with murderers and other criminals, some of those who happened to be their parents, all while surviving off of the garbage that came from Auradon, is the evil one?
That is not to say Uma doesn't make mistakes or does bad things. Mal and Uma have the common point of using a love spell on Ben, which is awful and should be acknowledged as that, but they only do it in Uma's case.
"When Mal and her friends successfully freed Ben, Uma took it one step further by putting Ben under a magic love spell" x "She [Mal] used spells to mess with other students, to convince Ben that he loved her, and to change herself in order to fit in as Ben's girlfriend. But once she realized she needed to ditch the spell book and learn to survive without magic, she was able to become the queen she was always meant to be"
Those... are not the same to me. They detail every thing Uma does during D2, making it clear that using a love spell was worse than the previous actions of kidnapping him, but with Mal it almost feels like they excuse her actions because, eventually, she learned that magic wasn't the way to become who she was meant to be.
Also, what do you mean Mal felt guilty about the other VKs who were left behind? Mal didn't even look sad when her and Evie were leaving Dizzy behind! Evie was the one to come up with the idea to bring more children to Auradon, and when that magically turned into the VK Day (my arch-nemesis plotline along with Merlin Academy), she didn't look worried at all that it would them so long to free all the kids if they were going to pick 4 each time.
And again, her idea to close the Barrier for good (with no way in or out) would mean that eventually, everyone left in the Isle would die. I know it's Disney, and they would never make that happen, but if you're not going in to even leave your trash there (aka their food source), yeah, they're all dying.
Now, with Uma, they point out how she wanted to escape and get revenge on Mal, but like...... not really? Of course she mentions in D2 how she wants Mal's new turf and tries to make a deal with her to leave with her crew, but when she's actually free and we get into D3, it's been months (I think) and while Auradon's scared she's going to do something, we find out Uma spent all that time looking for a hole in the Barrier to get the kids out.
When she makes another deal to help Mal, all she asks for is the guarantee that every kid who wants to leave the Isle is able to do so. Who breaks that promise? The "villain" with the major mean streak or the confident natural leader?
I'm not saying that Mal is real villain, because she's really not. But she's far from how they describe her and if you're gonna tell me she's a natural leader, I better not see her bringing down the Barrier, letting both the kids and villains out, and acting like it's the right thing to do.
VK Day wasn't the answer to free the innocents, but bringing down the Barrier isn't it either! Mal doesn't "help convice Auradon citizens to accept all VKs into Auradon Prep" she just decides to do that lol
And again, that decision is not up to her, she had no legal right to do it. She was just Lady of the Court and nothing else.
Like I said on twitter, Disney and Descendants like Uma because she's a fan favorite, she was one since they announced her as a character. But they insist on the idea that Auradon changed her for the better, as if she was never someone who fought for what was right. She's not perfect either, but they can't write about her in a way that makes her look better than Mal.
How did Mal stop her at the end of D2? Mal didn't do anything, they were fighting, Ben made a speech, Uma turned around and left. That was it.
How did Auradon transform her? Of course they are implying that because of Rise of Red and her becoming the new principal, and even though this plot still kinda confuses me, it still seems like all the wants is for Auradon to be a fair place that doesn't discriminate against anyone.
I now this is getting too long, but I really like ranting about descendants. It's my comfort franchise but there's so many things wrong with it lol
And I also know I'm probably looking too deep into it, but I don't think I'm the only one who sees the ways Disney has always treated Uma and Mal differently.
I want to get this book and see if there's anything else about them. I really wished Disney and Descendants treated Uma better, though.

Mal wanted to be good, but only to an extent.
If being a good person put what she wanted in jeopardy she didn’t want to do it. You can see this with things as extreme as closing the barrier or things as simple as taking the time to read a book or not using her spell book.
She wanted Ben and the life of being a Queen without the work that came with it. Uma was right, Mal is selfish a lot of the time. If the barrier had been closed forever she wouldn’t have felt any remorse if the VKs (and Ben) had no problem with it. She would’ve went on with her new life and enjoyed Auradon while all of the kids stuck on the Isle suffered.
And she most definitely wouldn’t have apologized to Audrey if she wasn’t put in a position where she was forced to. It was extremely hypocritical for her and the core four to hold resentment towards Ben and Uma after the spelling incident when she did THE EXACT SAME THING.
This could be like three paragraphs longer but I’ll keep it at this lol
