I was looking through old photos and found this one. “Old” old age make up I did in 1991. After I disappointed with myself on a job I did. Then I decided to do a make up with spending enough time and if this did not turn out good, I was going to walk away from make-up career. And it turned out decent, so I decided to keep doing. Since then, my advice for young people has been if you love doing it, keep doing it at least 10 years no matter what. And do personal piece when you feel stuck. This make up brought me many opportunities. Gelatin facial appliance. FleshtTex Bald cap casted in collapsable core mold, Freeman Repro10 positive and Epoxical and Ultracal30 negative mold. A whole day later, I finally have workable molds for my #ear duplicates! The two colors of #silicone is due to the fact that I ran out making the first one and had to take an emergency trip to #blick to get more. They didn't have the exact same kind, so I opted for #Rebound25 which is a brush on silicone. Ok you guys..! So my puppet's arm armature broke from inside..! So I decided to redo the puppet with an armature assembled with hands and feet pieces all at once. Here I am trying to make room for the feet and hands to fit in the mould. The next step is to fill the sealed pep with gypsum. We bought Ultracal 30 at Sculpture Supply Canada. It comes in a heavy 50lb bag, and you scoop it out and mix it with water to make cement stuff.

We used some strips of duct tape and clay supports to create retaining walls around the edges. At first, Liam poured the gypsum in and left the pieces on a table to set. This was a bad idea. The weight of the stone in the piece, and the flat surface of the table resulted in flat, misshapen peps. We had an unused memory foam cushion left over from the Wreck it Ralph costume, so that became the pouring surface. The foam has just enough give to allow the pep to sit securely, but not flat. 

Since these are back armor pieces, they need to be curved. We placed scraps of wood and cardboard under the corners to maintain the curved shape and poured the gypsum in sections. We later discovered it's actually a better idea to slush the gypsum around for the first layer, until it sets up a bit in a solid, smooth top layer, and then carefully fill the rest in sections afterward.

This makes the next part easier. Once the gypsum is all set (each batch we mixed took about 30-60 minutes to cure), it can be gently pried out of the resin+paper mold. Then it has to be sanded and filled with more gypsum until it's smooth and shaped the way we want.

So another "behind the scene" secret. The tentacles are been made out of polyfoam. We were trying to make it out of from couple layers of slip latex for the texture and then "fill it" with some foam then left it in the oven till next day, but it didn't turned out good. Polyfoam was a super clever solution, especially when you are running out of time! Oh yeah, the wires hanging out, because that's how I was planning to light up my tentacles.
