Endlessly refreshing the Barkley Marathons updates to see if my girl Jasmin Paris makes it onto loop 5. About 8 hours ago she was on track to be the first woman ever to finish the race.
You might remember her from previous ultra running achievements like "fastest woman to complete a Barkley Fun Run (3 loops, 60 miles)" and "overall winner and record-smasher of the Pennine Way Spine Race while expressing milk for her baby at aid stations".
For the uninitiated, Barkley is the most straight-up insane race that exists:
Limited to 35-40 attendees
5 loops totalling 100+ miles
Entrance requirements are...unclear, but include an essay section and a scavenger-hunt-type item
Course is unmarked and very mountainous; GPS navigation not permitted
Invented to mock James Earl Ray, who managed a measly 12 miles in the area during his prison escape
Most people don't finish the race, or even the Fun Run (only 10 people were left running as of last night, and that was a record high)
"Checkpoints" come in the form of finding a book that's been hidden on the course and tearing out the page matching your race number
Start time is whenever the organiser lights his cigarette

I still can't get over this panel from Avenging Spider-Man
Tumblr media
Like. listen I know partial face masks work because you're not expecting whoever to be a superhero but like.
at least a solid half of his face is visible and he's directly face to face with Jonah, of all people.
who, yknow, hasn't just known him for like a decade and a half at this point through the Bugle, but is also literally family
the combination of peter's confidence and jonah's spider-man blinders sure is. something

after getting caught up on nonplatonic forms 0.22 I started infodumping to a friend who called Lee “Stanley in a different font” and I can’t stop laughing about it
Hahahaha! I think it's pretty fun how canon TSP Stanley has no definition whatsoever. He's not even a silent character or a blank slate; what we know about him is based on what a literal Unreliable Narrator has told us, or what we choose to read into him. And I think that the best Stanleys are each a personal response to how people feel about video games and control. It's nice!
Anyway thank you so much for playing through what I've got done so far of NPF! I really wanted to elaborate on a core conflict that I think a lot of us had while playing TSP: You want to take care of The Narrator emotionally, but to do that risks destroying you, instead.
We'll see if Lee has any more success than the canon Stanley did.

P.S. The reference sheet/mothrrator design mentioned can be found HERE!!
Also, the crystal tail is inspired directly by Black— @blackkatdraws’s narrator! It was mentioned in the note as well, but really I wouldn’t have even started this blog without their art being a huge motivator. 💞💞 All the love!!

Here's your reminder that I am in fact so obsessed with spiral and killer klowns but in opposite ways.
I would like to consume spiral and pick it apart.
I would like to just watch the klowns create chaos.

#protests#france#just me rambling#i'm getting real tired of those posts being like ''in the US we cant protest like the french do cuz we get violently repressed''#it is undeniable!! i am not arguing with the fact your riots got stifled very violently. it fucking sucks#but we ALSO do!! The french government literally got denounced by the UN for its use of weapons and ultra-violence against protesters#just a couple days ago there was a huge protest against an installation that would ruin us ecologically#in a continuation to the pension protests#the cops fired 4000 grenades in two hours.#several of those aimed directly at protestors. which is illegal and very dangerous and can KILL#40 heavily wounded. two people are between life and death.#someone lost an eye. a journalist got hit by a grenade in the leg and is gonna be out of work for 2 months.#one is still in a coma. it's been five days. he might die.#it took two hours for the ambulance to get there for him cuz it got blocked by the cops. which is extremely illegal. but they're cops.#and this is one protest but it's like that all the time#last week a woman got her thumb torn off by a grenade shot directly at her#there literally is a recurring joke among cops about 'losing hands' cuz of the sheer amount of ppl who got theirs torn off like this#i sympathize with americans your cops are fucking nightmares.#but so are ours. we get beaten up and mangled and killed. but we're still out there#stop pretending we only riot the way we do cuz we have it easy. i'm legit going to kick your ass#i didn't distribute eye drops to my fellow teargassed protestors last week in my tiny ass city to be told we play on easy mode#anyway. grabbing my medic kit and going out to protest again in an hour. what will You do?

adulthood is reliving obsessions you've had for 20 years but also having a favorite sunscreen

Also, sunscreen can and does expire! There's usually an expiration date listed, but if there's no expiration date listed, the FDA suggests that it's safe to use for up to 3 years after purchase.
The ingredients in sunscreen that provide UV protection degrade over time and become less effective, so expired sunscreen won't provide the same protection as non-expired sunscreen. If it's all you've got then use it, but take it as an opportunity to buy new sunscreen you actually like!
If you have sensitive skin or are prone to breakouts, there are sunscreens that are lighter but still protective. Japanese and Korean face sunscreens like Biore Watery Essence can be particularly good for this, but you can also look for sunscreen labeled "dry touch." Another great option is a moisturizer with SPF, so that you get the benefits of sun protection and moisturizing.
SPF (Sun Protection Factor)
You might wonder why SPF above 50 isn't necessarily better-- what about those sunscreens marketed as SPF 70 or 100? Well, SPF measures protection from sunburn from the sun's rays (hence the name, Sun Protection Factor)-- in particular, a sunscreen label of SPF 15 means that it takes 15 times more solar energy to produce a sunburn compared to unprotected skin.
However, this doesn't directly mean that you can stay in the sun for 15 times longer than you would without sunscreen, because the amount of solar energy you get depends on the time of day and your geographic location. For example, you get the same amount of solar energy from
1 hour in the sun at 9 AM
15 minutes at 1 PM
So it's not a direct multiplier on time. But higher SPF should still protect you for longer, right? That would be true, but sunscreen becomes less effective after about 2 hours in the sun, so for most people your SPF 50 sunscreen will protect you from sunburn for the full two hours just as well as a higher SPF would.
As per the FDA, any sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher labeled "broad spectrum" will protect you from skin cancer-- higher SPFs provide greater protection from sunburn.
Folks who like to get their information in quiz form can also check out the sun protection quiz here (https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/cder/sunscreen/index.html).
Hello everybody with summer fast approaching here is your regular reminder that:
Everyone needs to wear sunscreen
SPF 50 is pretty much the best protection you can get, an SPF higher than that will have the same effect
Melanin does not protect you from skin cancer
Tanning is caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation
Spending the majority of your life receiving regular large doses of UV radiation without any skin protection is a good way to get skin cancer
Don't use tanning beds, and don't go sun tanning
Wear your fucking sunscreen

This is a dangerous sentiment for me to express, as an editor who spends most of my working life telling writers to knock it off with the 45-word sentences and the adverbs and tortured metaphors, but I do think we're living through a period of weird pragmatic puritanism in mainstream literary taste.
e.g. I keep seeing people talk about 'purple prose' when they actually mean 'the writer uses vivid and/or metaphorical descriptive language'. I've seen people who present themselves as educators offer some of the best genre writing in western canon as examples of 'purple prose' because it engages strategically in prose-poetry to evoke mood and I guess that's sheer decadence when you could instead say "it was dark and scary outside". But that's not what purple prose means. Purple means the construction of the prose itself gets in the way of conveying meaning. mid-00s horse RPers know what I'm talking about. Cerulean orbs flash'd fire as they turn'd 'pon rollforth land, yonder horizonways. <= if I had to read this when I was 12, you don't get to call Ray Bradbury's prose 'purple'.
I griped on here recently about the prepossession with fictional characters in fictional narratives behaving 'rationally' and 'realistically' as if the sole purpose of a made-up story is to convince you it could have happened. No wonder the epistolary form is having a tumblr renaissance. One million billion arguments and thought experiments about The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas that almost all evade the point of the story: that you can't wriggle out of it. The narrator is telling you how it was, is and will be, and you must confront the dissonances it evokes and digest your discomfort. 'Realistic' begins on the author's terms, that's what gives them the power to reach into your brain and fiddle about until sparks happen. You kind of have to trust the process a little bit.
This ultra-orthodox attitude to writing shares a lot of common ground with the tight, tight commodification of art in online spaces. And I mean commodification in the truest sense - the reconstruction of the thing to maximise its capacity to interface with markets. Form and function are overwhelmingly privileged over cloudy ideas like meaning, intent and possibility, because you can apply a sliding value scale to the material aspects of a work. But you can't charge extra for 'more challenging conceptual response to the milieu' in a commission drive. So that shit becomes vestigial. It isn't valued, it isn't taught, so eventually it isn't sought out. At best it's mystified as part of a given writer/artist's 'talent', but either way it grows incumbent on the individual to care enough about that kind of skill to cultivate it.
And it's risky, because unmeasurables come with the possibility of rejection or failure. Drop in too many allegorical descriptions of the rose garden and someone will decide your prose is 'purple' and unserious. A lot of online audiences seem to be terrified of being considered pretentious in their tastes. That creates a real unwillingness to step out into discursive spaces where you 🫵 are expected to develop and explore a personal relationship with each element of a work. No guard rails, no right answers. Word of god is shit to us out here. But fear of getting that kind of analysis wrong makes people hove to work that slavishly explains itself on every page. And I'm left wondering, what's the point of art that leads every single participant to the same conclusion? See Spot run. Run, Spot, run. Down the rollforth land, yonder horizonways. I just want to read more weird stuff.
