ponyboy grips the gun tight in his hand as he shuffles through the rest of the box. his finger lays on the trigger absentmindedly as he pulls out a diary. the last entry was from a while back, etched out in some form of chicken scratch barely legible.

i’ve been thinking about mama a lot lately. what she’s doing, how she’s doing. where she is.

ponyboy could sob, real tears, letting them run down his face and drip off his chin in a silent sacrifice of his life so far.

“pone? you nearly done- holy!” sodapop comes round the corner, making pony jump up onto his feet. “what’re you doin’ with that, honey?” his voice is cautious as his eyes dart down to the gun in his hand.

ponyboy freezes, distantly realising he was crying.

“pony? cmon put it down-“ sodapop takes a step towards him, eyes blown wide. “darry! darry!” he turns his head slightly, lip caught between his teeth as he glances to ponyboy and back to the empty hallway until he hears the telltale stomps of darry’s footsteps.

“soda..” his voice trails off as darry enters the room, both hands shaking and running through his ungreased hair.

“put it down, pony. is the safety on?”

“ponyboy, cmon.”

“pone-“

ponyboy takes a step back, staring at the gun in a sick, morbid curiosity.

darry runs forward as he’s distracted, snatching the gun and tossing it to the side, pushing ponyboy onto the ground and holding his wrists to the floor.

sodapop crumbles in the corner of the room.

“don’t hurt him dar-“

the flicked a switch in pony’s messed up brain as he attempted to push the body ontop of him off in the form of frantic shaking.

darry climbs off, holding his hands up in defence.

“i wasn’t gon’ do anythin’,” he starts, eyeing the diary still in the box. “was just lookin’.”

“don’t ever pull that shit again, pony. please.” darry begs, emotions evident on his face. lingering in the gap between his brows, resting on his frown lines.

sodapop pulls him into a hug, holding a hand to the back of his head to support him best he could.

the tears on his face dry on soda’s shirt as more drip down his cheeks, reminding him of puddles in the park reflecting a body or a rainy night stuck in a church.

he just cried harder.
