HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO YA FOLKS -- Hopefully this isn't too late, I know I've been absent lately #ughwork, but I knew I couldn't miss out on posting this! This is my @mk-secret-santa gift for @southparklove1213​, who wanted something with Kuai and Hanzo, leaning on subscorp. Now, I apologize that this came out moody, but man, tfw you get a song stuck in your head... (that and this is me we’re talking about, angst goblin extraordinaire)

A lot of things can happen in the span of five years -- earning Scorpion's trust after decades of illblood and animosity, no - earning his friendship, was one of those things. It was not unlike treading a minefield, the man's temper flaring at even the smallest hint of ill intent, at badly worded phrases and accusatory tones. Hanzo might have been given life once more, reclaimed his face and name, but he was an outcast -- or thought himself to be, absolutely sure that no one trusted him. He was the only one willingly under Quan Chi's control, a wrathful ghost that didn't care what was in front of him as long as he could fight.

Kuai knew better. He was there. He was numb and voiceless and stuck in his own mind but he was there, and he saw it all.

Truly, there was a time when he hated Scorpion for killing the original Sub-Zero, for brutally murdering his brother -- and had he gotten the opportunity, had he not been interrupted by the cyberized Lin Kuei, Kuai was sure that he would have killed Scorpion in the tournament... if that was even a possible outcome for the wraith. He wanted him to suffer, at the very least.

But in the two years of having his body be strung along like a puppet, of brutally killing innocents for Quan Chi's wicked needs, he watched Scorpion. And he saw the rawness of guilt ever present in those glowing eyes, saw the flinching hesitation until Quan Chi goaded him into doing the most brutal of things, of being the one to order the revenants to kill and maim.

Scorpion had a will, but it did him no good.

And this is what fueled Kuai's need to make amends, even before he knew the full involvement of the Lin Kuei with Quan Chi, of the truth behind Hanzo's absolute belief that his brother had been the one to destroy his clan when Kuai knew well that that was a lie. They were both reborn in the Netherrealm, both used by a Necromancer who collected their souls like toys to play with, and that was a good enough reason to at least try and reach out to Hanzo.

Only to be surprised by the strength of the shaking grip that took his hand in return.

The depth of Quan Chi's manipulation could never be fully understood, certainly not by Kuai Liang, and not even by Hanzo, but his deeds alone made him deserving of the most brutal of deaths. And they would do it together.

That had been the plan, at least.

Part of Kuai knew it was wrong to indulge the man in vengeance when he was aware of how hard it was for the man to maintain control over himself, to not give in to his impulsive nature left over by Raiden's half-done revival, the Netherrealm essense still tied to his very soul but he had thought... no, he had hoped that Hanzo would have trusted him enough to wait, listened to him...

Unfortunately, Hanzo had listened, and he knew that should they go with Kuai's plan, of waiting until Quan Chi had been transferred, that their two clans would be put at fault, and Kuai -- the most respected out of the two of them -- would be brought to pay for his actions. And Hanzo couldn't bring himself to allow it. Every second Quan Chi spent alive was a wasted one, and in truth there came a time until he couldn't ignore the Sorcerer's teasing calls deep in his mind, asking him to free him.

And free him from this life did he, beheading the withered Sorcerer in one smooth motion.

But it was as the amulet fell, that Shinnok was released, that the reality of the situation came crashing down upon the Shirai Ryu master -- he had been used once more to move along Quan Chi's plans, shown everyone that he truly was the same empty shell of a man that deep down cared for nothing more than vengeance and bloodshed.

But it was better than having the same thought of Kuai.

And looking up at red skies, Kuai knew it was his fault. He had failed Hanzo.
