I have a fic in progress, it’s called “Nightmare Realm Blunt Rotation.” Yeah. It’s your classic “nobody could fix Bill so they pawn him off on Mabel” but it’s a contemporary tale set 12 years after the original show. None of the chapters are done yet lol so I just picked out random shit from some of them to share😖

Bits from the chapter where Mabel, after having been handed custody of Bill during a heated negotiations session with the Axolotl, has now recruited him to host live sales for the Mystery Shack gift shop and he eats rocks on Instagram for views

Stan’s jaw dropped, and he couldn’t maintain his inside voice anymore. “What the fuck? Mabel!”

“Just ignore it. This is my life now.”

Stan scowled at her blasé response. “You’re just letting him do whatever he wants now?! Mabel, he’s gonna use that setup to recruit freaks for his cult!”

“No, no. It’s chill. I’ve got him doing live sales on Instagram.”

As if on cue, the devil put away his cosmetics and pressed a few buttons on the phone, resuming his work. “Ok, I’m back. Remember buy two get one half off on the spheres….no, no we don’t offer that.” There was another pause as he furrowed his brow at the comments. “Honestly, Catharine Bianchi, I’m going to send a puma to tear your flesh. How many times do I gotta repeat myself? I don’t care if your an influencer, this is a business.” Another pause, this time the beast brought a gloved hand to his face in frustration. “Your entire life is a joke and you’ll never find love! Ok banned. Sorry my beautiful people.” He picked up a pyrite sphere from the table. “Very fine mineral specimen here, it’s 35. Who’s takin it?… Marlene you still here?”

Upon witnessing this spectacle, Stan made Mabel an offer. “Want me to punch him to death again?”

“No, that’s ok.”

Bits from the chapter where The Pines find out Bill has a keen sense of smell and Stan wants to use it to make money by selling shitty non FDA approved perfumes (spoilers everyone gets a rash from it, total disaster idk maybe someone will drink it and die):

“I could tell it’s him because of the smell.”

Mabel looked perplexed and slightly disgusted, so he felt the need to explain.

“See, because my kind can’t typically see so good, we’re usually blessed with a keen sense of smell to help make up for it.”

“Ohhh! Is your sense of smell like a dog, then?”

“No, maybe like… a dog with nose blindness. I can’t smell as good as most Euclideans, but I can at least smell better than a human. Y’know, it’s one of my fun genetic defects.”

“Sooo, what do I smell like?” Mabel asked eagerly.

“Ah. Kid, you’re not gonna like it.”

“I smell bad?!”

“No, not bad. It’s a nice smell. Makes me feel welcome.” He frowned. “Ya smell like human B.O. and fruit.”

“What?!” Mabel cried, as she started frantically sniffing herself. “Dude I just bathed!”

“No, no, no. All humans have some smelly human smell. That’s like, you’re base smell. As a species. It’s not just you. It’s the undertones that are unique.”

“Oh thank god!”

“And then also whatever stuff you come into contact with affects that smell too. And other flesh monsters have different smelly smells, like deer smell isn’t the same as human smell, ya know?”

“I see. You really are like a dog!!” She patted his head affectionately.

“Ugh. Not quite but… sure fine, whatever.”

“So what does Ford smell like?” Mabel questioned enthusiastically.

“He smells like comfort. Well I mean, he smells like human B.O. and books mostly, but it’s a comforting smell.”

“Aw, that’s cute!”

“Sniffing is a form of greeting in my homeworld’s culture but it can also be a sign of affection.”

“You’re so dog-coded it’s crazy!”

Bill scowled. “I’m not a dog.”

“Yes you areee~!” Mabel cooed. “So what does Grunkle Stan smell like?”

“Horrible. Like loser.”

“Ok but like give me the notes. Pretend Grunkle Stan is a perfume.”

“Oh, honey, nobody would buy that.”

“Ok, ok I’m writing this down! ‘Stan… smell!’ Ok!” She looked up at Bill expectantly.

“Just put ‘ass’ in giant bubble letters,”

“Oh, come on! He’s gotta be more complex than that!”

Bill was sat on the sofa, nursing an unplugged candle warmer, when Stanley barged in.

“Hey, jackass, I have a business proposal for you-“ He paused, a look of disgust washing across his face. “Is that a candle?!”

Bill took another sip from the large container and nodded, smiling. “It’s pretty alright. Piña colada.”

“Huh. I do like piña coladas.” Stan grunted.

“So what’s the deal Stanley? Whaddoya want?”

“I was thinkin, after you sniffed all us the other night, you ought to put that snoz to good use!” Stan pulled a little paper perfume sample from his pocket and shoved it in Bill’s unimpressed face.

“You want me to help you pick a fragrance to conceal your stench?”

“No! I think we ought to get into the fragrance business together! Think about it, they sell this crap at the counter in the mall for hundreds of dollars! Hundreds!” Stan declared, having flashbacks to all the times he got jumped by the old ladies at the department store telling him there was a sale on cologne. Did he really smell that bad?

“Haw? I don’t really get excited about money like you do, Stanley. What’s in it for me? I’ve already got a steady gig going with Starburst.” The gig being half his paycheck was cheese, might I remind you.

“Uh… Ford could model for our ads! Yeah.”

Bill squinted his unnatural human eyes in suspicion and took another glug of melted candle. “Sorry pal, you’ll have to try harder than that.”

A/N: In this chapter I reference the song “Welcome to Wonderland,” By Anson Seabra, and yes it was partly a tiktok trend a few months ago but I really liked the idea of having it work here. Anyways give it a listen while you read for a fun time and let me know what you think! (I rly love feedback 🥺)

It was a busy day at the club, Caleb had more than the usual number of new additions to the club so you had to spend most of your day running around and getting the rooms ready. 

This is the most stressful part of the incoming process, but the one that you thought was the most important. 

Coming to terms with your death and realizing that you will be living in this hotel for the rest of your undead-life is hard to grasp, and it seems to be taken a little easier when the room is nice and cozy looking, with little welcome notes and words of encouragement from you saying they can reach out whenever they need. 

That was your goal, to make sure that they had someone, who had their best interest at heart, to be there when they felt low, or needed help. It’s what you thought you had in Caleb, only to find out just how wrong you were. 

Caleb wanted power, that’s the only reason he was so sweet to you when you got here. He saw the potential you had and wanted to get his hands on you so you wouldn’t use your powers against him. 

As soon as you found out what he was doing, you made a vow to not let him do it to anyone else, if they had powers like yours, you couldn’t let him get his hands on them. 

You had just just finished setting up the last room when you heard the familiar sound of wheels on carpet around the corner from where you were. 

“Willey, I told you not in the hotel! You’re gonna tear up the carpet!” you scolded as you rolled your eyes. 

Willey came into view and you could tell something had happened, his smile was unusually wide at the moment.

“You know the boy I was telling you about? The cute ghost I ran into the other day? He and his band want to talk to you, they want help understanding their ghost stuff, and I mentioned you, so uh.. I’m bringing them over this afternoon!” He rushed everything out in one breath and started jumping up and down in excitement. 

You smiled at his actions and shook your head,

“You seem to really like this boy, don’t you?” You eyed him and giggled as he started to blush. 

“I should be done with my incomings by 1:30 if you want to bring them then, and Caleb should be out until show time this evening so we should be good on that front. I’m excited to meet them.” You smile and look at the boy in front of you get worked up again. 

“Oh, (y/n) you’ll love them! They are so much fun, Reggie can be a little slow sometimes, but I can see you really getting along with Luke, he has some similar attitudes that you do, and then Alex, ugh what’s not to like about him?” Willey was falling into a daze and you placed your hand on his shoulder to bring him out of it. 

“It’s gonna be great, but I do have some newbys to welcome before you bring them here, so I gotta get going, see ya later!” You smile and walk away towards the entrance gate.

Welcoming the new ghost was both rewarding and tiresome, you did what you could to make each person feel welcomed and at home, but some guests were harder than others. 

“Okay, (y/n), we’ve got one more, she should be here in 5 or so minutes. Here’s the profile you asked for!” One of the other ghosts, Kendra, said as she handed you a folder with some basic information on the new ghost. 

Kendra didn’t have powers like yours, but she wanted to help you in any way she could, it was her idea to start collecting data on the new ghosts for you to use to make this an easier process. 

You opened the file and your mouth dropped in shock, tears prickling behind your eyes. 

“Kendra,” You gasped out and she came back and looked at the file with you, “she’s, she is only 6 years old.” You shook your head to get your thoughts straight. 

“Okay, we’re going big for this one. Get some of the dancers for tonight down here in fancy dress, I have an idea.” You decided and she nodded. 

You don’t typically do anything more than hand a personalized welcome bag to the new ghosts or give them a small memento to help them feel like they were in a new home. 

You have never had someone as young as her, this child died at such a vulnerable age, what could Caleb want with such a young ghost? 

You were in the middle of rushing to set things up when you heard the voices of Willey and some other boys coming your way. Checking your watch you realized it was 1:30 and these were probably the boys that he wanted you to meet. 

“(Y/n)!” Willey called and his face fell when he saw your expression, then looking around and saw other ghosts rushing to clear the space. 

“What’s going on? Did something happen?” He continued and grabbed your arm to stop your movements. 

All you had to do was hand him the file and he understood. You turned your attention to the group on boys that came with Willey. 

“Hi guys, I promise I’ll have a more formal introduction in a bit, but right now I really need your help, you sing right?”

The group nodded and you stepped into action. With a snap of your fingers you had changed them all into suits that resembled something out of the “Alice in Wonderland” movie, as that was your goal. 

“Woah,” The blonde boy took a step back and looked up to Willey to see him poofing into a similar style outfit, “Look, not that I mind an outfit change, but what’s going on?” He asked. 

“My job here is to welcome new additions to the club we belong to, I play a somewhat vital part of making the transition from life to death a little easier for those struggling to accept it,” you took a breath as the next part still made you feel a variety of emotions, “We have a new ghost that is coming any minute now that dies last night, she was only 6 years old. I can’t even imagine what she is going through or what she is thinking so this is going to be the most magical and happy welcome I have ever put on.” 

The boys all had a sad look in their eyes, looking at each other and nodding, solidifying their decision to help you with this process. 

Willey handed you back the folder and squinted his eyes, noticing the dim color in your own. 

“(Y/n), how much magic have you used today?” He went to grab your face to look closer but you poofed away, knowing he wouldn’t like what he saw. 

“I’m fine, just follow my lead and, well, catch me when I finish.” You smirk and snap your fingers, causing the room to change from the open ballroom to the looks of an open field with trees and small flowers. 

Hearing a small knock on the door you smile big, 

“Here we go,” you clap your hands and the music starts, the melody of “Welcome to Wonderland” flowing from the band. 

The girl walked in and you smiled and sang the first few lines of the song, opening your arms wide and gesturing to the scene around you. 

“Welcome to Wonderland, we've got it all, Potions and pastries that make you grow tall” 

You snapped your fingers again and a tray of drinks and small snacks that the young girl liked appeared beside her, she grabbed one of each and looked back at you. 

You squatted beside her and motioned to the rest of the room,

“Forests and cottages, castles and cards that can talk” You sang again, allowing her to take in the many sights that the room held. 

“Welcome to Wonderland look where you're at, maddest of hatters, the Cheshire Cat, magical cabins and lovely white rabbits with clocks” As these words were sung you motioned some of the actors to skip out and do a small show of dancing and fun. 

You grabbed the small girls hands and spun her into a dance of your own. 

“Dancing through a dream, underneath the stars, laughing 'til the morning comes. Everyone that leaves has a heavy heart. Oh, Wonderland I love.” 

You take a step back and bow to the child while signing the next line, taking her  hand  directly after.

”Welcome to Wonderland, I'll be your guide. Holding your hand under sapphire skies” 

With another snap of your fingers you change the ceiling to appear a deep blue, with lots of small stars peeking through, pointing out a shooting star to the girl.

“Let's go exploring or we could just go for a walk, Welcome to Wonderland, where should we go?” 

You lead the girl down a path where you see Willey and the boys wait, instruments in hand, ready for their cue. 

“There's a tea party along down the road, make an appearance and maybe they'll sing us a song” You sang, then the boys launched into a slight solo that you all danced around to. 

“Dancing through a dream, underneath the stars, laughing 'til the morning comes”

While this part played out,  you put fireworks in the sky and had everyone come back out to dance with you. You kept snapping your fingers, using more and more of your limited magic to make this the most magical moment for the child. 

You look down and see her eyes gleaming back up at you, bringing a warmth to your chest. 

Knowing you had to wrap this up, you start snapping closer to the girl's head, making her sleepy, and filling her mind with warm and happy thoughts. 

“If this was a dream, then at least I've got memories for when morning comes.” 

You continue the snaps, feeling your magic fading with each one, leaning on a chair for support. You’ve learned in the past that your magic seems to be directly linked to your energy levels, so you knew you had a short amount of time left before you collapsed, so you gave this last part your all. 

 “Now that I must leave with a heavy heart, Oh, Wonderland I love.”

You smiled at the girl as she fell asleep in your arms. You quickly handed her off to Kendra to take her to her room, which you quickly poofed the snacks and other goodies to so she had them when she woke up. 

Knowing this place needed to be spotless before Caleb came back, you used the last of your power to clap and the room put itself back together. 

Directly after you felt your knees start to buckle and you gasped as you started to fall, but knew you wouldn’t hit the ground. 

Within an instant Willey had caught you and poofed you over to a couch where you could rest. 

“That was AMAZING!” the dark haired boy exclaimed, “I do have a question… were those bunny people real?” he moved in closer, “where did you send them?” he had his eyebrows scrunched and was looking at you very seriously. 

“Ah, you must be Reggie,” you laughed, then looked at the blonde boy, “and Alex, I've heard alot about you,” this caused both him and Willey to blush, “and I guess that makes you Luke.” you turned to the brunette, meeting his gaze. He smiled in return and then coughed to break eye contact.

“Ehm, yeah. So, you’ve got some serious power, what you did for that girl, that was truly amazing.” Luke looked around and back to you. “Are you okay though? You look, um…”

“Dim? Yeah, she doesn’t know how to limit herself,” Willey handed you a glass of water, “She has some limitations to how much she can use at once, and then when she succeeds, this happens.” 

You roll your eyes at Willey and take a sip of the water. 

“I’m fine, really, I’ll gain my energy back soon enough,” You brush off the worry and try to change the subject, “So, Willey was telling me you guys had questions?” 

The boys looked between each other and back at you. 

“Well, there's this one girl who can see us, and then when we play music with her everyone can see us perform. We are trying to figure out if there's a way that we can be seen even when we aren’t playing?” Luke stepped forward to ask. 

You tried to hide the shock on your face when Luke said they could be seen, if Caleb knew about this then he’d mark them, so you tried to steer away from that. 

“So there’s nothing I can think of right now, but I can definitely keep my ears open to see if anyone else has ideas. Who is this girl that can see you?” You responded after a bit. 

“Oh! Julie! She’s great, so is her dad, he’s really good at taking pictures and stuff, and her brother-” Reggie got cut off by Alex putting his hand over his mouth.

“Dude, she asked about Julie, not her family tree. Julie was cleaning out her mom’s studio when she found an old CD of ours, when she played it we kinda, just, fell into her life.” He explained. 

“Did you guys die recently?” Taking a once over at what they were wearing you knew they hadn’t, but wanted to give them a chance to explain. 

“We died in ‘95. Uh, an accident of sorts…” Luke scratched the back of his head. 

“We ate bad street dogs.” Reggie dead panned and Luke turned to him in annoyance. 

“DUDE! Not everyone needs to know.” He threw his hand to his forehead as you giggled, then launched into a cough fit. 

“Ah, little bird, why so weak?” Your eyes shot open and met a matching scared expression from Willey. 

You shot to your feet, mustering all the power you could into holding a strong stature. 

“Caleb! I thought you were out until the show tonight?” You questioned.

“Finished early,” he traced a finger under your chin so he could look in your eyes, “why so dull?” 

You gulped and planted a smile on your face.

“Just welcoming today's batch, it can really take it out of me,” you turned to Willey and motioned with your gaze to take the boys away, but sadly not quick enough. 

“Ahh, and who do we have here?” You close your eyes and try to think of something, Willey speaking first. 

“Just some ghosts I met, we were just going,” He tried pushing them away but before they could get out Caleb called them back. 

“Oh, don’t rush on my account! Please, stay for my show tonight, or if you have to go, at least come back for it?” He clapped his hands together and you felt a burn start on your wrist, and his gaze shifted to you. 

“(Y/n) is performing tonight, she’d just love it if you boys could join.” He smiled down at you and the burn intensified.

“Ah, um, yeah! You guys should definitely come back!” You faked a smile and looked back at Caleb. 

“Uh,” Luke started, smiling as he switched his gaze from Caleb to you, “We have a gig at 9, but I’m sure we could swing by for a bit, I’d love to see you again.” He looked at his band mates and they shrugged. 

You winced when he mentioned they were playing tonight, knowing Caleb would ask you about it later, and you couldn’t lie to him, the mark made sure of that.

“Excellent, I look forward to getting to know you boys tonight.” Caleb smiled and started to walk away, but turned at the last second, “(Y/n), darling, can you meet me in my office after you show the gentlemen out?” 

You nodded and he continued on his way, as soon as he was out of sight you turned to Willey. 

“Um, I guess I’m gonna go talk to him, but uh, wanna meet me in my dressing room later?” You prayed he knew what you meant, you guys had to talk about how to go about this situation. 

If you tried telling the boys not to come, you would get shocked, same if you tried to warn them, it was a lose-lose situation. 

Willey nodded and turned to the boys, all of them about to start leaving when Luke turned to you quickly, 

“See you later (y/n)! Can’t wait to see you perform!” He smiled wide at you and you couldn’t help the grin that broke on your face. 

You waved as you watched them leave, the smile falling off your face as they disappeared, knowing what was coming next.  

You slowly walked towards Caleb's office, delaying what was inevitably about to happen. 

Eventually, your walk came to an end, you raised your hand to knock, but before you could, the door opened on its own, Calebs voice speaking from within. 

“Ah, my little songbird, nice of you to join me.” He smiled a wicked smile and the door closed behind you. 

“So, tell me about these boys.”

he’s relatively new (to our particular store and to being a general manager) and our former boss transferred at the end of august this year. and just. man is our current boss a Real Piece Of Work. for starters he’s incredibly stingy and overdramatic about labor and our overtime and how it takes from his bonus check. like just a couple weeks ago i worked night as i usually do but i came in early to cover someone in the morning so i was working a double shift. and my boss was almost immediately complaining about labor to me when he came in and how i should’ve said something about it to him. thing is, we have always just told the opening or closing managers about schedule changes which he. is not. he got so mad at me and said i didn’t need to come in for who i was covering due to labor and shit but like dude why schedule her then lol??? god the fact he was so trying to get rid of me until i come back for my night shift was so annoying? especially given my recently cut hours (more about that shit is upcoming 🙃) so. like. no i’m staying thanks!! ugggh he’s cheap so much so that it’s become a store-wide meme amongst just about everyone lmao. for example say something obviously unusable and so insignificant falls on the floor like One (1) french fry, and we exclaim dramatically “OH MY GOD we gotta pick that up RIGHT NOW, just think about [boss’ name]’s money!!!” it’s so goddamn funny he’s literally too easy to make fun of. which is all fun and dandy until you consider how his dumbass has been causing us to go downhill since he arrived.

the first big significant thing he did (that also really involved me so like. makes me even more pissed) was starting to promote our opener and give him a raise before me despite the fact i had asked first and as the main closer i do so much more shit than this other guy could even fathom doing. i was beyond frustrated and ANGRY. i work too hard and too much for the little pay i was getting. not to mention i live 30-40 mins away! gas ain’t too cheap! the fact this other guy still remains getting promoted is infuriating because he. doesn’t. fucking. deserve. it. and i’m not the only one who thinks so, just about all my coworkers think he’s careless, bothersome, and incompetent with no real maturity to handle becoming a manager. i keep fucking praying he ends up not becoming one. the thought of closing with him makes me want to SCREAM

but luckily i did eventually get my raise (after literally having to directly contact my boss’ boss over the issue) but heres what’s just. great… i’m now like still making a similar amount to what i was pre-raise because our boss pushed and pushed to start closing early. like we ARE brutally slow most of the time at night and the fact there’s this shitty construction blocking a big road entrance to our store isnt helping. but ya’ll we went from closing at midnight every day to closing at 10 except fri and sat we close at 11. its a drastic change though and it killed my hours. the worst part is i know my former boss wouldn’t have done this, maybe closing at 11 every day if anything but not 10, good lord. but because my current boss is so damn persistent in getting what he wants he was able to push enough for the change in our store hours. it’s funny because if you have some kind of issue you HAVE TO be super persistent to him about it otherwise it gets forgotten on the backburner immediately and it’s so frustrating. yet he’s always annoyingly and brutally persistent with his bosses over everything so 🙄

hes also like cutting my hours completely and giving me far less days to work, i used to be working 5 days a week all the time but now its like 4 days and recently this week (dec 3) its turned into only 3 days. but to sorta put that into perspective, i havent worked 3 days or less since MID JULY. id be working 35-40 hours a week (and 50 before i started school) and now this most recent week im barely working 19.

not to mention this hours change has managed to be reason for 1 of our night cooks to quit. and like ya’ll, we have only 4 night cooks, and the one leaving literally closes most of the week. she closed a minimum of three days each. and now our other main closing cook who closes fri-sun every weeky is beginning to consider leaving also. it’s such a shitty development from all this and i don’t even want to know the shit that’s to come next.

so not only all that shit but then there’s how he makes our schedules and always manages to fuck something up each week or weirdly schedule people in a way that makes no sense. like if someone requests off a day they normally always work each week, he often doesn’t fill that shift with someone else? like hello?? our schedules are so static too, my former boss always went out of his way to put different people together on different days each week but my current boss? nah let’s just copy and paste the last week’s schedule, change like 2.5 things and call it good. and i know it’s like, don’t change something that doesn’t necessarily need to be changed but. ugh i guess i just didn’t realize how much i enjoyed that original schedule diversity until it was suddenly gone… doesn’t help that i’m constantly being scheduled to work with the few coworkers i don’t particularly like 😊

so yeah tl;dr my new boss is an incompetent stingy asshole who gave a raise first to someone evidently less deserving than me, obnoxiously pushed to close much earlier thus killing the night crew’s hours, has given me far less hours than i used to altogether, at least partially caused 1 out of our 4 night cooks to quit, and he additionally just makes rather shitty unideal schedules

like. i found the answers. i was hoping all along it’d be some huge earth shattering revelation or something supernatural, i was expecting the typical video game adventure route or horrific twist where it turns out Something Despicable Is Happening In This Forest or something but 

in the end it was just 

a dead boy who did nothing wrong 

there’s no justice for him and there probably never will be. it’s not even clear who’s at fault or if anyone is. and sometimes shit like that happens. the whole game feels less like a game, less like a story, even, and more just like

living someone’s memory of that one fucked up summer he had when he worked as a lookout in wyoming 

maybe there wasn’t a conclusion maybe there wasn’t a moral to the story maybe it didn’t Mean Anything after all it just. happened. 

and it does feel anticlimactic, it does feel unresolved, it does leave you feeling kind of empty and confused but as an experience? it was amazing. as sharing in henry’s experience during this summer and feeling what he went through and getting to know him and delilah and all the little details and the beautiful graphics and all of that? completely stunning

if you run into familiar landmarks everything’s just suffocating in this burning orange smog like the whole world is burning down with you in it but the fire itself is apparently not close enough to be a direct threat so the sense of urgency isn’t really there and everything just feels. weird and disorienting 

like the story ended already, but im still here and i dont know what to do with myself anymore 

and again: is that just bad writing? is that a flaw? or is that what you’re supposed to feel?

i guess im gonna use this as an opportunity to talk a lil bit about the use of fire as a symbol in this game though 

you come out here intending to take on a job watching for fires and working to prevent them 

you put out one fire (confiscating the fireworks, stomping out the campfire) - you solved one problem, sort of - but more fires keep starting - things keep moving from bad to worse - and in the end it’s just you alone in the burning forest 

The Big Fire’s cause is unclear unless i missed it but that seems to happen right at the start of the spark of possible attraction between delilah and henry - a spark which should not be there, they both have people they should be going back to, so there’s the whole. fire as metaphor for passion that is also destructive and difficult to control kinda thing but i dont think they really brought it far in that direction beyond hints

the site fire is set off right when everything goes to shit, another big fire indirectly caused by the people who were supposed to be preventing it 

and you don’t get to save the day and put out the fire or anything either

it just. happened, and now you’re surrounded in it and can’t do anything about it

maybe someone will come in and stop it but that’s not your job. there’s nothing for you but to just leave it burning and move on 

which is really relevant to some other themes im gonna get into a lil later but for now lets keep on goin

it sounded like brian didn’t want to go climbing and his dad was forcing him but that doesn’t make him a murderer 

but if he knew his kid was uneducated and he was trying to teach him how to do it he should not have taken him to somewhere that dangerous 

he should have been more careful, that was his responsibility as a father and he failed that and his son is dead as a result 

i think... i think he was hiding out because he’d rather disappear than let anyone know what he’s done (or what happened, if we don’t place blame on him) 

he didn’t want anyone to find him

and the fact that he’s just sort of. dedicated the rest of his life to living as a hermit in total isolation just to try to keep people away from his son’s corpse rather than just committing suicide or running away or something shows you how eaten up with guilt he’s gotta be but 

i dunno. i dont know how i feel about any of this 

and he did still attempt to kill henry if he really didn’t know about the other way out of the cave 

i dont... understand 

i mean he didn’t want them or anyone else (and probably especially delilah) to know about brian and his mind’s probably more than a little unhinged at this point but 

why keep transcripts of all their conversations. why do all of this. where did he get all of this equipment how has nobody figured anything out 

is he just. out of his mind and has nothing else to do with himself

i think maybe those experimental record reports were maybe like. planted there by ned so i would find them and think there was some weird conspiracy going on rather than me finding his actual hideout/finding out what was really going on but i feel like doing that just caused more trouble than it would’ve otherwise 

this also... hits right on how i was feeling at this moment in the game and is also why im hesitant to criticize it as anticlimactic or disappointing because like

that’s how the characters feel too. delilah’s echoing exactly how i felt. i think that’s how you’re supposed to feel

and i mean maybe you like that maybe you don’t but 

i kind of like the idea of a game that’s structured just. like it’s someone’s memory. just something that happened one summer. 

sometimes things just happen

but i think overall whatever message there is here or what there is to take away from this experience, it’s ultimately a story about regret and running away from guilt, running away from mistakes and what happens when people can’t cope 

henry loved juila. but he left her in australia and he ran away out here and doesn’t know how to cope with it or what to do. he doesn’t know if that was a mistake but he feels like he failed her 

but henry could still go back. he could still go to her and try again. and even if he doesn’t, at least he left her with her family who he knows will take care of her 

delilah left javier. i can’t remember her reason why. i feel like she said she just kind of...left one day and didn’t really know why herself and never could come to terms with it and doesn’t understand it herself but i feel like im forgetting something 

but she left that behind and built up lies about him to protect herself and went out into the forest to keep herself away from it all and spends her time drinking and doing crossword puzzles to try to forget 

and ned left his son’s corpse to rot in the bottom of a cave and hid himself away in a hole in the ground to avoid that reality 

and now he’s run off to god knows where and left the problem with delilah

so now she’s the one who has to decide whether to leave that guilt buried in a hole somewhere or do something about it 

i hope she finds a way to be okay again 

hence nothing remains except for our regrets 

there isnt rly one anymore

and again i think the. “what was the meaning of all this. what have we gained from this. what am i meant to take from this experience” feeling is intentional

i want to know what her response would be if you asked her to come with you but 

i wanted to encourage henry to go back to his wife as much as i could do 

i hope he meets delilah in person and i hope they always stay friends but. i think he needs to go back

and... we don’t know 

we don’t know what they do or what choices they make after this or how it changed them 

and i guess. really the only other thing i want to say for now is that it is... a weird writing direction to take two very interesting, engaging, likeable characters and draw the player’s attention completely on them and their lives, mention a sideplot about a kid delilah knew who went missing, but then suddenly have that become the entire focus of the story 

finding brian’s body was upsetting and sad because i knew he was a good kid, a kid who did nothing wrong, a kid who played wizards and wyverns and loved video games and could turn a space in a rock into a castle with a little chalk and imagination and discovering that that kid died alone in a cave and nobody ever found him is sad

but that wasn’t part of my story, really. so the impact didn’t hit as hard as it seemed like it was supposed to 

i didn’t remember that much about what was mentioned about brian because i didn’t understand how important it was since i was more invested in the characters i knew and cared about than “that kid delilah knew once who went missing” y’know 

it hurt more to tell delilah than it did to see it 

for the entire story to be building up to nothing but the conclusion “it wasn’t about you. there was no conspiracy. there was no big mystery. it was just something awful and tragic that happened because of one father’s neglect and now there’s nothing more that can be done. you weren’t supposed to know, but now you do. and there’s nothing you can do about it.” is. it’s strange. i want to know more about henry and delilah and what they do and what they choose from here on out but that was the end of the story
