There is no denying that India is a diverse country and so are their marriage ceremonies. If we talk about western marriages, they follow different procedures. In western culture, people prefer to date first, live together to know each other in a better way and check the compatibility. If they have found each other compatible enough to spend their entire lives with, they simply marry each other which is just a day event. But things are different here in India. There goes a lot of research work in finding the right match in the same religion, caste, community, etc. Not just this, we have various pre-wedding and post-marriage ceremonies involving families of both sides. The Sikh marriage ceremony is known as ‘Anand Karaj’ which means a blissful union of two souls.

All You Need To Know About a Beautiful Sikh Marriage
Sikh marriage is also known as ‘Anand Karaj’. A Sikh marriage is known for its rich culture and strict adherence to religious codes. Have a look at the typical rituals of a Sikh Marriage: -
Tumblr media
Roka:
The parental consent of a Sikh wedding is considered to be extremely significant. Whether it is a love marriage or an arranged one. One big pre-marriage ritual, ‘Roka’ is very important in a Sikh marriage. The Bride's father visits the bridegroom's place and he puts a tilak on the groom’s brow's head, giving him gratitude, clothing, etc. This is respect which the bride’s family gives to the grooms family.
Kurmai:
Kurmai refers to the engagement ceremony that mostly happens at Gurudwara. The function is attended by close friends and family on both sides. The priest or Granthi gives a short prayer before the engagement begins. This ceremony involves the exchange of rings between the bride and groom.
A Kara, the obligatory steel bracelet that men should wear in Sikh and a kirpan, the bride's kin, is a small knife that is a symbol of the noble heritage of the Sikh. A red scarf is placed on the shoulders of the groom, around the neck, during the ceremony.
Akhand Paath:
In Sikh marriage, Akhand Path usually happens a week before marriage. It involves family members reading Guru Granth Sahib for 48 hours at Gurudwara or at the house itself. This ritual is performed separately by the bride’s family and groom’s family. This ritual seeks to explain to the bride the importance of religion and Guru Granth Sahib's teachings, which define the spiritual way of life.
Kirtan:
Kirtan involves the religious music performance. Sikh marriage gives special importance to kirtan. It is performed by experienced musicians also known as ‘Raagis’ who sing ‘Gurbani’ with tabla and harmoniums.
Ardas:
The families visit the gurudwara regularly in the days before the marriage ceremony. Before they reach the gurudwara, they cover their heads and wash their hands and feet. They open the Guru Granth Sahib and read and pray loudly.
Langar:
Langar Prasad is made with semolina, ghee, and nuts by the gurudwara family members. The Prasad is distributed among the attendees after the prayers have been completed.
Shagan:
The father of the bride gives gifts to the groom’s family before the wedding. Such presents are delivered in beautifully decorated trays. In general, the shagan is composed of sweets, berries, dry fruit, clothes, and cocoa.
Chunni Ritual:
A few days before the wedding the groom's female relatives visit the bride's place bringing her an outfit, she is supposed to wear on her wedding day, including jewelry, accessories, makeup kits, etc. The groom’s mother covers the bride’s head with a sanctified scarf or chunni. Which indicates that now she has acknowledged the bride as a family member.
Maiya:
In this ritual bride/groom sit on a stool. Oil is placed on their hair and turmeric is put on their head. People sing traditional marriage songs in this ritual.
And the Weeding:
The baraat is welcomed by the bride’s father and family members at the Gurudwara front gate where the groom’s family is supposed to reach. The bride's side welcomes them, sing hymns and express their faith in the works of God. Most of the men take part in the Milni ceremony. Music and dance is the integral part of Sikh marriage which makes it even more beautiful.
Sikh marriage involves beautiful ritual and generally, all these ceremonies happen 7 or 10 days before the wedding. It involves the family members enjoying and praying goodness and happiness for the bride and groom.
