I never really got the whole "comfort character" thing until mitsuri kanroji. when shinobu said, "If we licked our wounds with hate and sadness, all of us would not be able to move forward. kanroji-san, your cheerful personality and smile often bring us salvation," and when obanai said "your bottomless cheerfulness and kindness... has saved many people, so you should be proud," they were spot on. mitsuri just has this lightness about her that’s so refreshing. everything about her, from her gorgeous hair and smile to her stunning clothes, radiates happiness. Her story of choosing to be true to herself and helping others is so heartwarming. plus, her love for food, family, and cats is really endearing. ufotable totally nailed it with her VA too. all of that together just makes her vibe so healing, like a perfect spring day. loving her is the easiest thing and she’s incredibly dear to my heart

It didn't seem right to skip over episodes I didn't draw recaps for! Things that ran through my head while watching this episode:
--When making this episode, Ufotable had the advantage of knowing what would come later in the manga. While rewatching it today, I had the advantage of knowing what would come later in the anime.
--By that, I mean the judicious use of Nezuko's lines in Tanjiro's dream in "Kamado Nezuko no Uta" *cough which I was just singing again at karaoke a few hours ago so it's even fresher in my brain cough*
--By that, I also mean the imagery of the field of Nichirin-to, wisteria petals, and dawn-like light as Tanjiro contemplates if he were to become a demon, and how he would trust that someone in the Corp would cut his head off for him --It never gets old how the Shabana siblings are a foil to the Kamado siblings, especially because Tanjiro recognizes how close they were and takes it to heart. I love how Gyutaro took a liking to Tanjiro on account of Tanjiro being laughably pathetic, and by merit of both of them being big brothers. That gives them something to relate to which is totally independent of whether they are demons or humans.
--I love that scene with Gyutaro mocking Tanjiro so much; it's one of those scenes that Ufotable really slowed down and dialed up the drama in, while still making every action make sense and count. One of the most tense conversations in the whole anime, and Gyutaro's glee is palpable. I love that all the names he calls Tanjiro are names that he was called when he was human, and while I don't think Gyutaro is conscious of it, it feels like at some level, he's yelling these things at himself because he's angry with himself for having failed to protect Ume.
--Speaking of, I love how Daki is like, "nuh uh, Oniichan, don't you dare make these two our friends, I hate them" and Gyutaro ignores her because she's an annoying little sister. Such siblings. Also, the way she's just casually sitting totally unphased at the top of the building is the biggest mockery, as it rubs him how useless their hard-earned triumph in the previous episode was. I love how much that theme gets stressed in this series--that is what it means to fight demons!
--Kimetsu logic: don't give us any idea what the characters are doing until after they've already done it. Tanjiro wasn't running away, but instead grabbing a kunai and covering its scent? Oh, ok, cool. Zenitsu had another variation on his one technique and he can only use it twice in one fight? Ok, cool. Inosuke can move his organs and resist poison? You know what, okay. Also, a note of voice acting--I love how heroically deep sleeping Zenitsu's voice is (I'm sure that's how the hero of Legend of Zenitsu always speaks), and how Inosuke is clearly Not Okay.
--Uzui can stop his heart? Sure. Alright. I wonder how much of that was voluntary in the middle of a fight with his little Tsuguko on the line, though--perhaps he also went into that state to prevent himself from bleeding out from his arm? But man, he is no-o-o-o-t looking good, that is truly fighting with desperation, however elated he is to have completed his sheet music technique.
--His wives were watching when he was down on the ground and supposedly dead. ;__;
--Ufotable always has such a challenge to make every Breath technique look amazing and they keep raising the bars. Even though a lot of the height of this battle was just being flashy and yelling at each other, they still had to thing about battle mechanics, like what hits they actually manage to get in on each other (Uzui didn't just lose the eye, he took a nasty hit in the abdomen, too!) and the moment Uzui drops one of his swords. Although a lot of the fighting in this episode is slowed down by character thoughts, if you put it all in sequence, it was very, very quick.
--This entire battle, actually, probably did not take very long. The initial blows exchanged between Tanjiro and Daki took a while, but once it got going with Uzui involved, it was very, very fast-paced. Considering people only started to evacuate during the Daki and Tanjiro battle, and most of them were still there during Nezuko's fight, it was probably very lucky if it was vacated by the time this episode started. We don't know how long Tanjiro was out cold, but hopefully that was enough time for the stragglers to get away before Gyutaro's final attack (but Nezuko saves them, yaaay, I also get to enjoy knowing that Nezuko's fire at the end of this episode because Ufotable made that cool choice too!). Anyway, part of the reason I bring up the speed of this battle is because I am still cross at Ufotable for messing up the timeline by placing this arc in very late autumn, which is should had been in summer, thereby making the night short in the first place--and uncomfortably hot even before you add all the flames! (Added bonus: hot and muggy for the boys when they're in kimono and makeup, because that's funny.)

You know what ruins me ?
The sibling bonds in demon slayer.
Usually i think about the shinazugawa siblings but NO. IM TALKING ABOUT THE KAMADOS TODAY
Imagine the pain of having to watch your sibling go through it time and time again just to protect you ? And the worst part is that it's applied both ways. Well it's not the worst because I think demon slayer is so good at showing what lengths you would go for your loved ones.
What takes me out every sing darn time is the first time tanjirou is trying to save nezuko. Imagine, he was walking home after a typical day, and a night spent away from his family, completely unassuming of what his neighbour had unintentionally saved him from.
That is, until he smells blood. Imagine the fear that makes his heart, his heart that has been raised to love and care, drop and ache with paranoia.
And then he's met with the horrible sight of nezuko, his closest sibling, resting in a pool of her own blood that stains everything, from her hair, to her face, to her clothes, to the child in her arms, to the snow that they lie one, to the snow that falls gently on them. His soul is already grieving despite the fact that all he feels is despair and confusion .
And demon slayer does a really good job at conveying that hurt and panic through they way they animated the scene:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And nothing is said, tanjirou just screams, devastated by the scene in front of him. What does he do ?
He must've felt the world just crashing around him as all that matters to him is taken away in the most cruel way possible.
As an older sibling, I can't even fathom the idea of losing my younger brother. Granted, he's not that young anymore. He's always going to be a baby to me. So when I first saw this scene, all I could imagine was the heartbreak tanjirou must feel. As well as the feelings of failure as he wasn't even there to protect his siblings.
Tumblr media
THE PAIN DOESNT EVEN STOP THERE GUYS.
I think it's common knowledge that tajirous first reaction to his whole family being slaughtered isn't instant tears. It's just shock and disbelief that something so horrific has happened to him.
Even after he's processed that, his second reaction is to check if anyone is still alive. Which to me is just
Tumblr media
BECAUSE HOW ELSE WOULD HE KNOW THAT NEZUKO IS STILL WARM ? HOW WOULD HE KNOW THAT NEZUKO IS THE ONLY ONE THATS WARM ???
imagine the rush of adrenaline his body gets when he realises that nezuko could still be alive ? Once again, Ufotable delivers with the portrayal of this as you can see it tanjirou's body language. The way nezuko has been hastily wrapped up to preserve as much of the little body heat she's still producing. The way tanjirou is moving as fast as he can as a 13 year old kid with another 12 year old on top of him. The way he literally says that his lungs feel on fire but he keeps pushing on because it's his little sister.
It's heart breaking.
Guys the kamado siblings actually have me in a clutch. They care so much for each other that it's so cute but devastating at the same time. I think this is one of the main reasons why I think that nezuko is the sole reason as to why tanjirou hasn't gone fully insane yet.
I mean, the guy sees ghosts at like every corner, but he doesn't even bat an eye. He has two very loud and hyper friends that he's constantly surrounded with. And a breathing technique literally no one has seen in a thousand years. And he questions none of it bruh, his sister is in his backpack. He's fine. There's literally nothing to worry about. lmao tanjirou is so funny for that *sighs sadly
Tumblr media
tanjirou's grief is lowkey overlooked sometimes. It's cute that nezuko and tanjirou care for each other but it's also so sad to me as to why they are so close.

Today a shit post, because my friend who I do rewatches with made me promise to post this.
As we were discussing the episode, I started going into an analysis of how Ufotable has framed expectations from episode to episode, especially how they took us from a "a whole episode from one page, huh? Well, ok, eye candy is nice" episode to a "oh, oh, oh, my heart" episode.
And while I meant to say, "Ufotable knows how to play us like a fiddle" what I wound up slipping up and saying was "Ufotable knows how to play us like a Pillar."
So there you go.

Animation Night 153: Kara no Kyōkai, part 1
We are entering... a slightly tricky phase of Animation Night. It’s not that we’re out of great animated films, far from it. Hell, we’ve yet to screen such classics as The End of Evangelion or Adolescence of Utena. But that’s the puzzle: a lot of such films are awkward fits for the format, requiring a lot of context, or standing too short or too long to fill the format.
Nor are we short of beautiful, artistic films from Europe. AniObsessive recently did a column on The Swallows of Kabul, which might finally be an answer the question of ‘what the hell could go beside Funan’. But I think we’ve had a bit too much war and genocide on this blog lately, so we’ll save that for another day.
Instead, let’s keep it chuuni!
It’s been a long while since Animation Night had anything to do with the Nasuverse. Back on Animation Night 60, I wrote a fairly brief description of Fate, and we enjoyed the spectacular Heaven’s Feel movies with only mild confusion.
But this was far from the only time that studio Ufotable adapted the the works of the enigmatic king of chuunibyou, Kinoko Nasu.
Tumblr media
Let’s set the scene to begin. I’ll try and go over what I’ve been able to find out about the history, bearing in mind that Nasu-san is insanely prolific and his meta-setting is a seemingly infinite rabbit hole of lore...
...but as far as the man* himself there’s only the barest information to go on about his earlier life. He went to Hosei University, and afterwards started creating novels with his high-school buddy Takashi Takeuchi. Their first project was 空の境界 Kara no Kyōkai, lit. The Boundary of Emptiness but titled in English The Garden of Sinners in 1998 - that’s our subject for tonight, so more on that in a minute!
(*Wikipedia offers a citation for ‘man’ to a 2004 blog post where he jokes about being called a girl in a newspaper, in which he remarks もともと女々しいのがワタクシの芸風ですものボンソワー。[My style’s always been feminine, bonsoir.]; no further comment on that.)
In 2000 the pair founded a dōjin circle called TYPE-MOON to publish the visual novel 月姫 Tsukihime (lit. Moon Princess), which was a mega-hit when it launched at Comiket, and from that went on to create another visual novel called Fate/Stay Night, which was an even bigger mega-hit. This led to a forest of spinoffs with increasingly baroque titles like ‘Fate/hollow ataraxia’ or ‘Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya’, the most successful being the gacha game Fate/Grand Order, which launched in 2015. That gacha game has in turn spawned many many adaptations of its various storylines, such as (deep breath) Fate/Grand Order - Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia or Fate/Grand Order: Final Singularity - Grand Temple of Time: Solomon. Really rivaling Kingdom Hearts there. Some of these films have been described as creative and ambitious, others very staid and playing it safe, but to be honest I am a foreigner in this land and I can’t tell you too much about them.
Anyway, as far as biographical details go, perhaps there’s more buried in an interview somewhere? But if so, I’ve yet to find it.
Tumblr media
Our subject for tonight is a seven movie series produced by Ufotable from 2007-9, adapting Nasu’s first work. You might say, Bryn, that’s nuts, seven entire movies! To clarify, these movies are for the most really short, each just about an hour long with a couple of exceptions. So we should be able to pretty comfortably view the whole thing over two Animation Nights.
So what’s it about?
Set when it was written in the late 90s, it follows a teenage girl demon hunter called Shiki Ryougi, who has ‘Mystic Eyes of Death Perception’, which let her see indications of how things will die. She becomes a detective specialising in supernatural cases, alongside her eventual husband, Mikiya Kokutou. So romance and supernatural battles.
Many of these ideas, particularly the death perceiving eyes, would be reprised in Tsukihime. Within the meta-narrative, Kara no Kyōkai is an alternate universe, but not one completely disconnected from the rest, with its characters showing up for minor roles - and even playing a role in the end of Heaven’s Feel.
Except, that’s selling it short, because it’s also the first outing for the more esoteric concepts of the Nasu’s works: the Akashic Record, the Jungian anima and animus, and the paradoxes of the Taiji in Chinese philosophy to name a few. And to ground that, all sorts of dark shit: Wikipedia reels of suicide, rape, patricide, incest and murder, along with DID. It sounds like a lot!
Of course, it’s also about ridiculous psychic powers with long names, magic eyes, and so on. It’s easy to mock all these chuuni elements as hollow and pretentious, but imo the resulting blend is to strike out somewhere fascinatingly weird and achieve effects that a more reserved work couldn’t. We’ll see whether that comes together here!
Tumblr media
In discussing the film series, Nasu described the original work - which he came to view as a rough early work - as ‘like a prose poem’, inherently very difficult to adapt. He turned down proposals to adapt it as a TV series and a movie, imagining it would be too hard for audiences to follow. But when a seven-movie series by Ufotable was proposed, he changed his mind:
It was such an off-the-wall idea that I got caught up in the enthusiasm; the offer was so awesome that turning it down seemed rude, so I agreed readily.
So, that’s one of the two characters in our story. What of the other?
Ufotable would later make ‘adapting Fate works’ into a steady line of work alongside popular shōnen like Demon Slayer. But at this time, they were a much more experimental studio. At sakugablog, kVin writes...
[Aniplex producer Atsuhiro] Iwakami had been ruminating about how to put together an adaptation for Kara no Kyoukai that actually lived up to the potential he saw in Kinoko Nasu’s world since 2004, and by the following year, the solution to his woes manifested in front of his eyes. Futakoi Alternative was an eccentric reboot of a milquetoast, twins-themed harem series. It reimagined everything about the original series into a simply indescribable mix of genres and crazy scenarios. The motto of ufotable’s founder Hikaru Kondo resonates throughout the whole series: if making as many things as possible is the way to ensure you’ll get some of them right, why not jump around from noir cinema, to sci-fi epics, then back to face some humanoid squids before some surprisingly earnest romance? For viewers like Iwakami, this irreverent spirit was a wake-up call about new ways to create animation. So, why not approach them when he was planning something grand that wasn’t quite like anything seen before in anime?
In fact, Iwakami’s original idea was merely a trilogy; it was Ufotable founder Hikaru Kondo who was like nah man let’s do seven. Within the studio were type-moon fans such as director Takuya Nonaka and character designer Tomonori Sudo, whose passion inspired Kondo to go big. Recklessly big. The initial plan was to release a new film monthly, but this soon proved predictably impossible. Even so, they managed to complete the series within two years, which is pretty astonishing in its own right.
Tumblr media
As you can see from the clips in this post, the visual style of these movies anticipates - if perhaps in a cruder form - the studio’s later Fate adaptations: chiaroscuro lighting and gradients and filters on top of gradients and filters. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but as far as a house style goes, it’s worth acknowledging.
Internally, its direction was shaped by the flatter-than-usual hierarchy of Ufotable (whose name refers to a round table in the Arthurian sense). Each movie was assigned a different director without a structure unify the production as a whole beyond adherence to Nasu’s work.
I’ll pull in kVin to describe the resulting vibe of the project:
At its core, Kara no Kyoukai is a pretty cute love story that asks itself whether it’s possible to stray away from your fate; to put it plainly, Kokutou claims that he can fix her, even if the fixing involves getting over a pesky character flaw such as a predisposition towards murder. While not a groundbreaking scenario, its commitment to that relationship in spite of all the extraneous elements makes it work, and Shiki in particular is a slaughterer with very charming body language that evolves according to the major shifts to her character.
At the same time, these films are also highly atmospheric and committed to the sensorial experience in a way that no other Type-Moon anime is. While the expository worldbuilding and dense dialogue that Nasuverse works are known for are still very much present, the Kara no Kyoukai films are also willing to stay silent for minutes at a time. The mystery aspect to these films—Shiki and Kokutou work for Aozaki Touko’s detective agency after all—is honored with an appreciation for the mystique; even if you know that long-winded answers are likely to come, they tend to relish the opportunity to soak the viewer in the grim, mysterious atmosphere of its world. There is a quiet appreciation of the things that are yet to be known, and those that may not be spelled out.
Tumblr media
At the time, he writes, the staff were intimidated by the idea of theatrical animation, which in the 90s called to mind Patlabor and Satoshi Kon - a tough act to follow, no question. But the dense image boards of art director Nobutaka Ike, who worked on those very same films, brought the confidence needed.
The films follow the same release order as the original novels, which is narratively non-chronological.
Nasu, for his part (link again), was anxious about his early works being adapted...
In Kara no Kyoukai, the first story, "Overlooking View" (俯瞰風景) is the clumsiest. I've always thought I wanted to do something about it, and I told a staff member, "If we're making this into a movie, I'm going to rewrite the first story; please let me do that." But he said, enthusiastically, "No, I want to work with it the way it is. I want to animate this!"
Then, when I read the finished script, they'd cut out over half of the unnecessary excess fat and had turned out something more interesting as a story, so I thought, "If it's like this, they don't need me to rewrite it."
In Nasu’s view, each film ought to stand alone, but the full picture can’t really be understood from just the first - but he claims that with all seven films, the viewer would have enough to understand the story without having to turn to the books. Which is lucky, because the only version of the books in English is a widely disparaged fan translation.
To support all this comes haunting music by composer Yuki Kajiura and her group Kalafina, who would later create the renowned soundtrack to Madoka. In fact these movies are the origin of Kalafina, with Kajiura putting together a new group with a couple of members of her previous project FictionJunction.
Anyway, please read the rest of kVin’s article (perhaps after the movies! x3) if you fancy a detailed retrospective on all seven films.
Tonight my plan is to screen the first four parts of The Garden of Sinners, namely...
I: Overlooking View - an introduction to the series. In 1998, Shiki lives alone in her apartment, occasionally visited by Mikiya, and working for an occult detective agency. She learns of a series of strange suicides at an abandoned building. Investigating, she finds the building is full of hostile ghosts. Someone is drawing the girls to the building by astral projection...
II: A Study in Murder - Part 1 - in 1995, Shiki and Mikiya are highschool students. A spree of brutal murders break out in the area. Mikiya discovers that Shiki (式) is plural, with a male alter called SHIKI (織) who is the inverse of her personality. But who’s doing the murders?
III: Remaining Sense of Pain - A teenage girl called Fujino is raped by a group of gangsters, and pursues revenge with her psychic powers. Shiki and Mikiya are pulled in to the case, and realise that Shiki once knew Fujino - a girl who could not feel pain. But that seems to have changed...
IV: Hollow Shrine - a direct sequel to the second film. Shiki ended up comatose, and now in the psychic void, confronts her alter. We learn about her backstory and how she got involved with the wizard detectives.
I think these summaries should convey the level of Content(TM) we’re dealing with here. Guards up!
Next time around, we’ll pick up with Paradox Spiral, Oblivion Recording, and then at last A Study in Murder - Part 2. Which will actually be longer, because PS and ASiM2 are two hours long. (There’s also an eighth movie, released in 2013, titled Future Gospel which is a new sequel written by Nasu for movie form.)
I think that will suffice for an introduction. Animation Night will be going live 7:30 UK time, about 40 minutes from this post, and at 8pm UK time we shall begin the movies! Join me at https://www.twitch.tv/canmom~

As we approach the end of another anime season, i feel compelled to actually spotlight a few surprises. Lately, I've fallen out of love with the whole genre. I'm forty years old and have been watching this sh*t since i was, like, four. Godzilla and Transformers were my gateway drug into what we called Otaku culture, way back when i was young. Basically, Weebs before Weebs. Still, being so young and seeing suck stunning visuals and, oh my god, the violence! I am Eighties Baby so sh*t was REAL lax back then. I grew up on Guyver, Fist of the North Star, and Wicked City. Akira changed my life at eight or nine years old and I've been a staunch supporter of the sh*t ever since. Nowadays, that quality is lost. The last few seasons have driven home the fact no one wants to spend money on sh*t. There are a few exceptions, of course. Frieren is a f*cking classic, gorgeous beyond words and f*cking emotionally damaging, and Eminence in Shadow is probably some of the funnest Shounen I've seen in some time but those are few and far in between. Kaiju no. 8 has all the makings of brilliance, and the budget to match. Anything Mappa or UFOtable releases is going to be pretty but probably lack anything resembling substance. It's hard to nil down both and, more often than not, it's the animation quality which suffers, which is why i wanted to make this post. There are three shows this season which are brilliant but lack in the visuals at times. They are definitely worth your time, even if they look cheap as f*ck.
No Longer Allowed in Another World
Tumblr media
Look, I've been touting the virtues of this show since the manga dropped a few years ago. Seriously, if you search this blog for Love,Death, and Isekai, you'll see an entire review of the manga. I posed that sh*t two years ago. I've been a shill for the manga ever since. When it got the anime treatment, i was disappointed by a few things (they gave Tama shoes. Why? Why deprive of such slutty foot game?) but the show, itself, looked cheap. I was disappointed for, like, three or four episodes. All the way until Sensay used his powers for the first time. Then i understood why the animation was sh*t. Those few instances, almost always splash pages in the manga, got all the money. I was let down. Just like i was with Chained Soldier, Chillin in a Different World, and I Got a Cheat Ability in a Different World. I knew i couldn't drop this show like i did those others because i know where the narrative goes so i stuck it out. The animation gets better, slightly, but it never really impresses. Still, the characters and world -building are more than enough to carry. Definitely check this one out based on the story, alone. Expect bright posts of exceptional quality, but it's mostly passable at best.
I Parry Everything
Tumblr media
This one is a mixed bag for me. I definitely enjoyed the show but i felt like it could have been better. It's not overly stunning in terms of visuals, but you can tell work was put into this, More than anything, the character work is the draw here. I love this show based strictly off the interaction between the main cast. There are some interesting world-building stuff going on in the peripheral but, for me, it's how they all kind of bounce off each other which makes this worth a watch. Strong character design, too. Like, the look of this world is pretty well envisioned.
The Ossan Newbie Adventurer, Trained to Death by the Most Powerful Party, Became Invincible
Tumblr media
This is arguably the worst looking on this selection and, somehow, the one i found myself committed to the most. F*cking Ossan is a whole ass contradictory! There should be some bombastic f*cking fights and spectacles all over this thing and, nope! It looks like and old Hanna-Barbera cartoon from the f*cking Seventies most of the time. Still, the performances, narrative, world-building, character work, plot, and just overall heart of this anime, more than makes up for the trash visuals. It's like the opposite of Solo Leveling; All narrative substance, no visual quality at all. I toughed this grody sh*t out until the end and felt almost as satisfied as watching the end of Frieren Th overall plot and character performances are THAT good!
A Nobody's Way Up to an Exploration Hero LV
Tumblr media
This is another one that I've actually been reading. There is some absolutely STUNNING art in the book, certain scenes that have these wonderful layouts which i could see being straight up epic in animation. They are not. Bro, i was about as disappointed in this sh*t as i was with I Got a Cheat Ability in a Different World, and that's saying the most. I wasn't expected Tomahawk steak but i figured at least an Angus ribeye, you know? I got Hamburg steak instead. Like, it's fine, i guess? I can see why it's popular and do recommend a watch but come on? If this thing had a budget, i could see it being a classic.
Dandadan
Tumblr media
I'm just throwing this in here because the first six episodes leaked and it is everything. Anime of the year. Perfect, top to bottom. It's visually striking in every way and the plot is as zany as the manga, No complaints. No gripes. The mention doesn't even belong on this list, I'm just dumby hype about it. Watch Dandadan. It's inspired!

Dandadan

I'm just throwing this in here because the first six episodes leaked and it is everything. Anime of the year. Perfect, top to bottom. It's visually striking in every way and the plot is as zany as the manga, No complaints. No gripes. The mention doesn't even belong on this list, I'm just dumby hype about it. Watch Dandadan. It's inspired!

Mulder: Hah...ha! So you and Punch used to date, right?
Peter: Pssssss!???!?!? Ephemer?! What with you all sudden???!!!!
Mulder: Punch's a scary person you know. How could you fall in love with "Punch" anyway? I mean Punch's non-human. On top of that, Punch is neither a boy nor a girl. I can tell you're a boy.
Peter: Very long time we were just friends or partners but...I don't know...after I met her once again in Neverland....we started to have feelings for each other.
Mulder: "Friends" huh? Then, there was nothing to you guys sharing an umbrella in the rain.
Peter: Then what about you and Scully sharing an umbrella in the rain huh? So you and Scally's Connection are just partners too?!
Mulder: H.....hey!! That's because she's only my partner that can be trusted!!
Peter: Hah...ha! "my partner"!!
Mulder: Ahem.....just because Punch's a loner but everyone is in interested in her.
Peter: Punch is not a scary person. She had a kind heart.
Mulder: But the fact that you didn't see Punch's scary in the past. That means you're crazy about her.
Peter: I already know that.
Mulder: What do you like about Punch then?
Peter: Punch does have a cute side. She's both cute and cool at the same time and her eyes are so beautiful. If I have to find someone to compare with her, Sonic is compared to her the most.
Mulder: Come to think about it! Sonic's also both cute and cool at the same time and his eyes are so beautiful and scary at the same time too!
Peter: That's why I'm falling in love with her. Non-human like Punch's cold and empty heart but inside their heart are so warm.
Mulder: So you said Sonic's cold heart too?
Peter: Yes. Sonic's just a container once in the past. Enkidu told me about it. When Sonic awoke for the first time, he had lived as a doll until he began to create his personality by himself and desired to live. No more than emptiness, the nothingness. Just like Punch and Gil used to be.
Mulder: ...............................!!
Peter: I couldn't take my eyes off from them. Their emptiness. I never thought that they're like dolls but......their hearts are gold inside behind their eyes. That makes them different from others.
Mulder: So because of you make them feel that they're alive. Feel had a place to return. That's why that King Gilgamesh can't let go of his love for you.
Rather, he is the kind of person who pours his love into empty things, seeing life where there is none and hoping it truly will come alive someday. This makes him an appealing target for certain supernatural beings, such as the entity lurking in the Fujou building. Shiki then walks over to look at his lifeless body, noting that between the two of them, he’s now the empty one. After Shiki’s walk home, we finally arrive at the completely quiet scene. Despite the lack of any dialogue or music, the scene is anything but empty. That whole time, Mikiya was the pillar she leaned on while she worked through her trauma. They had been high school sweethearts before the accident. He visited her every week for two years during her coma, and when she woke up in grief, he stayed right by her so she wouldn’t feel alone.
The love That Peter feels(Including Syaoran and Danny too) for Punch and Gilgamesh is the same love as Mikiya Kokutou for Shiki Ryougi. And this is why Peter never left Punch and Gilgamesh alone, he stayed right by her so "she "Punch" wouldn’t feel alone.
As I said Peter did love Punch anyway 😅

Man... I say this as a Gil fan but Kid Gil as a character makes no sense. Since he is still Gil I do love him as my son but well I’ve been thinking about this for awhile. (This post might get long bear with me)
Firstly, Kid Gil’s entire existence really irks me, because it goes against the entire point of the Epic. The whole point is that obtaining the herb of immortality/eternal youth is impossible. It’s what finally allows Gil to move forward and become a better king. In Fate this is still the same, where the snake steals the herb which, after Nasu changed his mind*** (important, I’ll come back to this later), gave Gil the epiphany of finally understanding humans enough to realize he’d been selfish and stupid and become a good ruler. But then, Fate just adds “but even though Gil realized he didn’t need the herb anymore he still went back and got another one later to make sure he has every treasure”. Which no, that was impossible. He only had one chance and he lost it. That’s the point.
Second, Kid Gil as a character was really only created as a plot excuse in FHA, to let him exist in Fuyuki with everyone else without causing conflict. This was back in 2005, right after FSN was written. I don’t think it’s a hot take to say that Gil really had a pretty one-dimensional character in FSN. He’s a villain, and that’s it. Unlike Kirei, or even Shinji, there is no attempt to give him additional depth, other than “he’s arrogant and selfish and believes everything in the world belongs to him”. He laughs manically when ripping out Illya’s heart and claims he had no attachment to Kirei but was just using him (in fact both of these are retconned in the Ufotable UBW anime to match with his newer character). There is no delve into his backstory, except for him believing things were better back in his day. Like all the other Servants he has a short bio in his character profile but it’s very shallow*** (but there is something very interesting in that which again we’ll get back to later). This contains the very first mention of Enkidu, but again this is not in the story itself, only in the biography. FSN Gil has almost nothing to do with the mythological Gilgamesh. His bio is just window dressing. FHA does not do much to rectify this. Unlike Cu, Medusa, and Medea, who get much closer looks into their backstories than in FSN, Gil once again does not. (This is not unique to Gil unfortunately, as Heracles, Kojirou, and Cursed Arm were also snubbed of getting proper backstories in FHA.)
At this point, there is no possible way for Gilgamesh to be able to get along with everyone in the way FHA necessitates. And so, this is where Kid Gil comes in. He is able to blend in with society in a way his adult self is not. He is an all-around good boy who hates the adult he grows into. This is where we get into the first problem with him. Just like his adult self in FSN, Kid Gil does not get very much depth. The most we get is his explanation of his taste in women, which is admittedly probably the first little bit of Nasu trying to delve into his character. He explains how he is interested in people he can watch grow and change over time, how his love for someone is dependent on whether they become a person he’s interested in, and that he will loose interest and abandon someone who doesn’t meet his expectations. This is very consistent with Gil’s modern character, and it’s a detail I like a lot. However, other than this, Kid Gil does not do much other than simply be the owner of Waku Waku Zabuun. He doesn’t have much of a personality either, outside of being “a good sweet boy that everyone loves which contrasts to his adult self”. The only similarity he has with his adult self is honestly his poor treatment of women.
Adult Gil only shows up in FHA by my memory three times. And each of them are far more interesting than his child self. The first of which is a joke scene, where Gil gets stuck in grail mud and keeps laughing insisting he doesn’t need help from Shirou even as he’s slowly being consumed. This is where his disaster outfit originates from. I love this scene it’s very fun. The second is the scene where he and Archer have joined Cu at the fishing pier. This is subtle but actually very important because it’s the first instance we see of adult Gil being loved by kids and that he actually has a bit of a soft spot for them. And the third is at the climax of the story, where he is fighting alongside everyone else, and he decides to fight with his full strength, which is the first time we see his “full power mode” AKA the one where he’s shirtless. But still, in a general sense, adult Gil is basically never allowed to interact with the rest of the main cast. Overall, FHA came out at a time where Gil’s character did not yet allow him to coexist with regular people, so Kid Gil was created as a band-aid of sorts. (Also worth noting is that the Hanafuda minigame contains the first mention of his clairvoyance).
However, Gil’s character has grown a lot since then. Zero established Gil and Kirei having a common interest and partnership, becoming something similar to friends (the anime adds a lot of queercoding to this too thanks Ufotable). There is also a whole flashback to Enkidu’s death in the novels, manga, and drama CD (but not in the anime fuck you Ufotable), which is really crucial because you can’t have Gilgamesh without Enkidu. Gilgamesh would not be who he is without Enkidu.
Then there’s CCC, which was basically Nasu realizing how much he fucked up and what a missed opportunity it was to have the world’s oldest hero in your story and not do anything interesting with him. CCC Gil is what truly made Gil shine as a character. It frantically retcons some things; he doesn’t just kill people randomly bc he enjoys it, he only kills people for very specific reasons in his judgement of humanity. His whole backstory is gone over in depth, including the Fate-original concept of him being the sole person to separate humanity from the gods. He was a tyrant because he wanted to help humanity and thought acting as a villain would let more people feel the need to push forward, but more than that he just didn’t know how to express his feelings, because try as he might he couldn’t understand humans, or gods, and so more than anything else he was lonely. And then of course everything with Enkidu, and the search for immortality, and the snake. And Gil says how it was only after the snake stole the herb from him that he realized how childish he’d been, and how he began to finally understand people, and he started to laugh at his own foolishness*** (the same thing which will come up later). And then CCC really completes Gil as a character as he’s finally able to live out his dream of traveling the stars with someone he cares about by his side. There’s a lot more but I won’t get into it now lmao. Anyway CCC is really good please watch/read/play it (just be warry of the massive amount of fatphobia and fanservice if that makes you uncomfortable).
Anyway, so right after CCC was the UBW anime, where as I mentioned before they changed a few things from the VN to make Gil seem not quite as cartoonishly evil. Then there’s Strange Fake, which technically debuted as an April Fools in 2008, but only seriously began being published as a series in 2015. This has a lot of great Gil moments too, and it further shows his general softness towards children. Anyway Strange Fake is really good please read it. Then FGO came about with the Babylonia singularity, which really just cements Gil as a great character. While Gil started of CCC as fairly menacing and antagonistic, only slowly opening up to Hakuno over the course of the game, Babylonia Gil is a hero from the start. A true wise king, the ruler of Uruk we’ve never gotten to see up until this point. This is also where Nasu fully decided to commit to the Mesopotamian mythology, even if typical of him he changed a lot. Babylonia made a lot of people like Gil for the first time, which is fair. Though a lot of people credit too much of this to it being “Casgil” not “Archer Gil” imo, despite a large portion of character beats in Babylonia being borrowed from CCC.
And so, Gilgamesh, the King of Heroes, has gone through a hero’s journey irl and gone from a one-dimensional villain to a true hero. Definitely someone who can interact with people without killing them on sight. In fact this happens in Emiya Gohan, which is basically just FHA without the serious side to it. Though not in the anime, adult Gil shows up multiple times in the manga and is able to walk around Fuyuki and interact with other characters and just hang out. They even keep up the bit from FHA of him being beloved by Fuyuki’s kids.
But, this post is about Kid Gil, who I haven’t mentioned in several paragraphs now. So, while his adult self who he admittingly hates gets to go through all that, what has the boyo gotten to do? Hey you know that really gross spinoff manga with the magical girls--
Yeah Kid Gil has only ever been relevant in Prillya. But honestly? He’s better there than he is anywhere else. As mentioned before he didn’t get much of a personality in FHA outside of wholesome and horny, and in FGO his existence makes the game worse overall. His interlude is just him creeping on Mash, and his Valentines scene is so infamous at this point it probably needs no introduction. But anyway, Kid Gil in Prillya is a much more interesting character. Though I say that loosely. He still doesn’t get much depth to him, but he does actually act like Gil. Kid Gil in FHA is so dissimilar to his adult self that its meant to be surprising that they’re the same person at all (this is actually pretty similar to how in FSN Gil has nothing indicating his identity from his appearance so it can surprise the characters and reader). But in Prillya, while definitely more agreeable and nice than his adult self would be, he still has moments that are unquestionably Gil. He lays around drinking wine (grape juice?), knows more than he openly tells people, and gets angry as shit if someone disrespects his treasures, particularly his treasure which represents Enkidu.
Tumblr media
I think this is a good time to say as a reminder again that Kid Gil isn’t “Gil summoned as a child”, but instead “adult Gil turned back into a child”. So his personality instantly resetting to his childhood self has always been iffy. It’s one of the things which makes no sense about him. Becoming a child again instantly resets your personality to how it was back then apparently. Though Prillya Kid Gil is slightly different, as he becomes a kid for a different reason but I digress.
But yeah, so apparently adult Gil takes the youth potion whenever he doesn’t feel like dealing with things. He almost does this in Strange Fake before Enkidu shows up. Since his kid version is just so different from him, I guess it’s like they’re different people so it’s the kid’s problem now? Or perhaps he thinks he’ll be more easily entertained by things while he’s a kid? It’s unclear. Oh I guess I should mention here too that technically in FGO it’s kept ambiguous as to whether the Kid Gil there is adult Gil turned into a kid or actually child Gil. But honestly it doesn’t make a difference since they don’t do anything with him anyway.
But, Gil taking the youth potion because he’s bored is ultimately one of the main issues I have with him. As, according to a Fate materials book (from 2009 I believe? I could be wrong), this is how Gil spent the 10 years between the fourth and fifth Grail wars. Specifically, he did it to “more easily blend in with society”. This was back before all the character development, or specifically character retconning, I was talking about before took place. This is still in the same mindset of FHA, where of course adult Gil couldn’t live peacefully in Fuyuki for 10 years. He’s completely unable to coexist with anyone ever.
Anyway yeah it makes no sense. Not just because of later changes to his character, it doesn’t even make sense in the context of the time it was written. Kid Gil is written to be a good sweet boy, who doesn’t condone all the war crimes of his adult self. So, if Kid Gil was around for those ten years, he would probably not be okay with the church’s orphan basement. He would probably be very against it in fact.
Then there is the question of how he would then go back and become the villain he is in FSN. I suppose there’s two trains of thought for this. One, he just stayed as a child for ten years without aging, which seems unlikely given he’s incarnated at this point so he can grow like a normal person, and also I don’t know why Kid Gil would willingly change back into his adult self then? It’s already pretty unclear how he changes back from his kid form into an adult in FHA, but regardless if Kid Gil knew the atrocities his adult self and Kirei were planning I don’t know why he’d willingly become that again. The other idea is that he just aged back up to his adult form, which could explain why it can sometimes seem like FSN Gil is younger than Zero Gil. But this also doesn’t make any sense. It would mean that Kid Gil grew up a second time, knowing the kind of person he became before, in a completely different set of circumstances, and then just happened to become the exact same way he was before?
Going back to CCC, when Gil talks about his past, he dismissive himself as an early child, saying he’s so different they’re practically different people and that he probably wouldn’t even recognize himself. His childhood self had not yet sided with humanity, and was at the time fairly neutral. This is as much as we get about him, but it’s when his isolation began as there was no one to understand him. He was a king from birth essentially, made by the gods to be king. He did not have a normal childhood at all, and was always meant as a tool by the gods, to be the lynchpin of heaven. It wasn’t until later, his teen years, that he rejected this task and decided to help humanity instead, though again he went about it in a rough way.
Basically, the reason Gil turned out like he did as an adult was due to very specific circumstances, and it seems unlikely that not a single thing would change about him if he grew up a second time in Fuyuki. Of course he does hate the modern world, and living there for 10 years just made him want to destroy it more. But then Kid Gil is able to get along in the modern world more easily so does Kid Gil hate the modern world just as much? Just like with the orphan basement I think Kid Gil would probably not want to destroy most of humanity, and probably would want to get as far away from Kirei as possible
(Also this is my bias as a Kotogil shipper but I don’t think Gil would say at the end of Zero that he’s interested in teaching Kirei about pleasure and watching him find himself more and then immediately dip to become a kid).
And then, the whole thing with Gil spending those ten years as a kid anyway is kind of dubiously canon anyway. It is mentioned exactly once, in one materials book, and never again. Nasu is well known for retconning things he’s said in past mats books. And in fact, it’s finally time to talk about the thing I said I’d get back to later. So, this materials book contains both the line about Gil turning into his kid form, and also his profile from FSN. The thing is, this profile states that after the snake stole the herb of immortality from him, Gilgamesh then immediately “died from grief.” This is not true. It is not based on the myth. In fact, it is plainly retconned in later installments like CCC. Fuck, it’s even retconned by Kid Gil’s existence in that he has the herb still at all! Yeah I guess Gil ending his life in despair makes sense for the one-note villain in FSN, but absolutely nowhere else. And so what I’m saying is that if such a huge piece of information in this mats book has been retconned to fit with Gil’s newer character, it’s fair to theorize that the issue of how he spent the ten years is too.
And also? Everyone’s just been ignoring this anyway lol. Kid Gil is just less interesting as a character, it’s much more fun to imagine what his adult self would get up to, and in fact his adult self is able to fit into society just fine if he tries. Plus since it’s only mentioned in one mats book most people will never read I’m sure a lot of people don’t even know it’s a thing anyway. It’s just... really stupid honestly.
And while I think that one particular instance of Kid Gil is stupid, I think in general Kid Gil is just such a wasted opportunity. In fact sometimes I wish that we had like a Gilgamesh lily Servant before remembering oh right we do he just has basically nothing to do with Gil. If Kid Gil was actually Gil summoned as a child and not just his adult self aged down, I think it would be really interesting to go into his character. This is the time where he was truly isolated, before Enkidu, before he decided to become a hero/tyrant. He’s just a child king. I want them to be able to explore the pressure put on him by the gods to be the one to restrain humanity, and how he decided to reject them entirely. He has not met an equal nor has he learned to relate to humanity. While he is kinder than his adult self, he is far less human. And I think that’s interesting, and it’s a shame they’ve never done anything about it.
I guess this could still change. We’ll see what happens in Strange Fake, and I guess Prillya is still technically ongoing. I’ve given up hope of him being written well in FGO lol. But anyway yeah. If you’ve read this far thanks I guess I’m very passionate about Gil as you can tell.

would love to hear how u feel about yoriichi 👀 thirst or otherwise
Oh if it's Yoriichi you will get thirst. I can't avoid Yoriichi thirst, sorry not sorry, you've opened a whole can of worms as I am in love with this sunny man. I'm totally not working on a cosplay for him right now haha I-I'll start with sfw and put the thirsty under the cut.
Yoriichi is actually one of my favorite characters in KNY but he's very underrated and I'm hoping that all changes when he shows up in the anime. Out of all of the major characters besides Tanjiro, Yoriichi is one of the most selfless characters and one of the saddest stories imo. I also enjoy that he's not a typical social butterfly like most good guys are, he's quiet and doesn't really want to be the hero of the story. He just wanted others to live a happy life, the same happy life that was stolen from him. He knew that it wouldn't be possible for others to live peacefully if demons continued to existed though. I have a soft spot for heroes that rise to the call but didn't particularly want to be chosen/special.
Favorite panel of him (sorry I love him I love him I love him)
Tumblr media
NSFW/NSFT Below the cut. Minors please DNI 🔞
Yoriichi utilizes sex for bonding with someone, not for getting off alone. He can go for a long time without sex/masturbating so when he does have sex he's probably going to go for a couple of rounds. No such thing as a quickie with him. Expect to be booked for the entire day and night (it he's not out slaying). If his partner(s) are stressed out he'll definitely initiate cuddles that turns into sex. I don't see him flat out asking for sex, I see him using mostly body language with him asking in a whispered voice "Is this okay to do?" sprinkled in here and there. Man's erection rises with the sun, expect morning wood often.
My man's a sub all the way. I will shout this from my roof top. Also the world's strongest samurai being a submissive person in bed?? Gets me sweating, gets me shaking... that's the good shit.
I can't see Yoriichi being a dominant person, I think he would try if you asked him but he wouldn't be great at it. He also knows he wouldn't be great at it. This ray of sunlight bottoms even when he tops, I would put money on it. Very soft... His partner(s) would have to be the ones to bring ideas to the table. Yoriichi doesn't have much knowledge on kink, but when he does bring up something it's at a whisper and you'll be floored that it even came out of his mouth. Wants to be tied up or held down but don't blindfold him, he likes to see everything going on. Absolutely loves to be teased and I would bet he could get off on just watching his partner(s) pleasure themselves alone. 100% tears up during sex, especially when he's about to cum. Doesn't have a breeding kink in my opinion? I think pregnancy would be a happy outcome but it's not his main goal during sex. He's not loud most of the time but I... listen, I just know in my heart that he has pornographic moans/whimpers. I just know it. It has to be true... Ufotable has a big job to do when picking the VA for him...
Aftercare is a requirement, it doesn't matter if the sex was rough or not. Yoriichi just wants to be so close and know you're safe... He wants to feel and hear every breath you/his partner(s) take...
I just... I want to lay down for a bit...

TOP 10 ANIME (that I've seen) IN 2021)
Just like the title suggests, this is a list of the anime I've seen during 2021 and are not necessarily ones that came out that year. My hope in doing lists like these is to provide recommendations for any anime of any year. Here we go!
(Holy crap, my is sort of on time this year!)
Honorable Mentions: K-On!!, Beastars S2
10. When Supernatural Battles Became Commonplace (2014)
Tumblr media
I could be simplistic and just say that this is a harem show where the main protag is a chuunibyo...but that's exactly what it is. Unfortunately, this show falls to the bottom of the list because it's one of those shows that's more of a commercial for the original source material and it ends before the actual plot starts without a second season. Why recommend it? Well, I will give points for the protag for not being a complete idiot, the animation/character designs are pleasant, and the concept of having someone make believe they have powers then suddenly having them is pretty humorous. Plus, there's a good chance that you have seen a clip from this show without realizing it. This show is the home this scene.
9. Seitokai Yakuindomo S1 (2010)
Tumblr media
This show only has one joke. That joke being: what if high school girls were openly perverted? And it's a joke that lands every time. I'll admit it, I enjoyed myself. It's kind of a breath of fresh air having a whole cast of female characters be openly expressive with things of a sexual nature. Sure, there have been harems where, typically, an older woman is more direct with her approach, but for high school girls to have no shame in exploring these kind of things? If it weren't mostly played for laughs, I'd call it a game changer. Even so, I can't wait to start season two this year.
8. Bubuki Buranki (2016)
Tumblr media
I can't even be sure if I like the show this much, but I'm pretty sure Bubuki Buranki is this high up mostly on style points. I'll bring up the elephant in the room: this is a 3D anime (but a 3D anime done well). Character models move around just fine for casual scenes, but is turned up a few notches for the battle choreography! As for story, the set up is paced just fine, but then slams on the gas pedal and never lets up. The show reminded me of the early years of RWBY where the fight scenes were the main draw. If all style shows appeal to you, I'd recommend this one. It even has two seasons!
7. Joshiraku (2012)
Tumblr media
Based off a gag comic, Joshiraku is a series about cute girls performing in a style of a one person theatre known as Rakugo. While I did have fun watching Joshiraku, I'll be honest and say that it's hard for me to suggest it. There's nothing overly wrong with it, the color palette is very pleasing and the humor goes over well. The best way I can put this is to paraphrase a friend of mine, "It's very Japanese." Again, there's nothing wrong with that, but if you are relatively new to the anime scene, this probably won't appeal to you. If you want to give it a shot anyway, I'd say go for it. If you're a seasoned weeb that hasn't seen this yet, definitely seek it out!
6. Higehiro (2021)
Tumblr media
Higehiro is about a young man in his 20s who takes in a runaway high school and helps her get her on the right path and deals with her past. I wish I could bring myself to rank this higher. At the heart of it, the series is really touching and shows that there are still people, albeit rare, that can/will help you out of the goodness of their heart. On the other hand, this show had a habit of picking ill-timed camera angles and framing for certain moments that felt icky. If you're able to ignore those moments and focus on the wholesome parts, give it a watch. If you can't settle for anything less than 100% wholesome, I completely understand.
5. Demon Slayer (2019)
Tumblr media
When it comes to my approach of popular shows, I usually wait until most of the hype dies down before I watch them. With that said, being able to watch with clear eyes unaffected by hype:
it's fine. Just fine.
Yes, Ufotable knocks it out of the park once again with its animation. Yes, most of the characters are fun and likable. And yet, I enjoyed just fine. I honestly don't know what it is, but I just wasn't blown away. Still looking forward to the next arc, though.
4. O Maidens in Your Savage Season (2019)
Tumblr media
Watching a show about high school girls going through their own sexual awakening as a dude, gotta say, I've learned a lot. Not saying I'm an expert, but definitely have a better understanding now than I did beforehand. To further establish my lack of expertise, I'll just give it a high recommendation before I say anything that shows my ignorance.
3. Records of Grancrest War (2018)
Tumblr media
This was the show that got me mad. Not at the show itself, but rather at the several people in the anime community who didn't watch this. I'm not one who's all in on waifu culture, but all y'all slept on this anime! Yes, the waifu game is strong here, but it also has decent animation, large-scale battles, political drama, and allegiances that change! Please check this out. Being three years late is better than never!
2. Den-noh Coil (2007)
Tumblr media
This was an anime that had been stuck on my "Want to Watch" list for YEARS, but finally gave it a watch after I found the whole show on Blu-ray for a good deal! Den-noh Coil takes place in an alternate world where people wear glasses that not only connects to the internet, but allows interactive augmented reality. However, this technology isn't perfect, in fact, it's actually kind of sketchy. It's a sci-fi and supernatural story being led by a group of young girls, which is a combination I don't see often. It's a fun series that surprised me quite a bit and I hope it can surprise you, too!
1. HoriMiya (2021)
Tumblr media
SCREW. BECOMING. A. COUPLE. AT. THE. END.
I want more romance shows that establishes a couple in the first few episodes and shows their growth throughout! Don't get me wrong, I understand the "Will they/won't they" model because it's a tried and true method to tease the audience to come back for more. But when shows like HoriMiya write relationships, it's so much more satisfying. Ahem, sorry. Yes, for all the reasons I just said as well as comedy with great timing, this was my favorite anime I saw in 2021.

Things that ran through my head while watching this episode:
--Dear Ufotable, why couldn't you had included the second half of this episode in your theatrical release? The One (1) time the Kamaboko boys all combine for one attack deserves cinematic treatment. I. Love. This. Scene. So. Much. They went for it so hard, and so obviously that they even had to poke a little fun at themselves in the Taisho Secret. Speaking of, I wish they would had given us more Taisho Secrets (or Stylish Scruffy Democracy) in Yuukaku-hen as opposed to just rehashing emotions that spoke well enough for themselves, as happens here with Tanjiro. I find it kind of funny how quickly the "To Be Continued" curtain fell as if to be like, "ok, yes, Tanjiro, we get it, time's up."
--Speaking of Taisho Secrets, I'm glad Ufotable has had fun breaking form since switching to FujiTV (and what did we ever do to deserve Butt-Chin Nezuko??), but I kind of miss the consistency of the first season's Taisho Secrets and manga panel BGs and limited movements like they're silly puppets. It makes the breaks in pattern more fun, like Inosuke & Zenitsu gulping in the BG while hearing that they may be in trouble with Shinobu, or cramming all nine Pillars in one Taisho Secret together so they can only move their mouths while stuck in their basic profile poses. Now there is no pattern, so getting a dramatic "no Taisho Secret today, too much drama!" thing is… not dramatic. Good thing they fixed that with Nezuko later doing the complete opposite by breaking the tension with a real Taisho Secret.
--Speaking of set forms and framing, while the animation for Gurenge is great for how it shows overall themes of the series and characters in relation to Tanjiro, this OP really says "this is the Yuukaku arc and this is what you're getting." One of my favorite details (I have a lot of favorite details) is how Uzui looks so relaxed and flamboyantly at ease when he's dodging obi, but doesn't show dramatic effort until he's dealing with Gyutaro's attacks.
--I… don't have strong feelings about the filler of the picnic in front of the grave, I do have feelings about it. I guess I fall more on the side of disliking this filler for how inconsistent the relationship feels between Tengen and his wives, like all that restraint they practice before relaxing because it's so ingrained in them to be subservient to their husband, but then Makio turns right around and calls Tengen out for being unfair. We've also never seen any jealousy between the wives, and however light-hearted, the inorganic way it came about with the cherry blossoms seems to take a nuance that Hinatsuru is the favorite and stretch it to a larger proportion than in the manga. That all being said, Makio sticking a bunch of petals in her hair with that "flirt with me too!" face is adorable. Speaking of flashbacks, I do like how Hinatsuru is the one to propose that they retire and live as normal people once they defeat an Upper Moon, as there needs to be a deciding point for when they'll move on. And the part about no hard feelings if they aren't all together? I love how bittersweet that is, and it feels very in the spirit of Hinatsuru to do that; I don't think it's that she's Tengen's favorite, but that she's the heart of this family. Makio looks to Hinatsuru when she feels conflicted, Suma turns to Hinatsuru first to celebrate their victory. They fact that she almost died would had stung the whole family is a way that doesn't just make them feel the hurt and loss, but feel like a tether has come loose.
--Ok so, I love Suma for being a simple bimbo, but I hope Tengen never feels like he's parenting her. I hope that when she's all "I wanna be a dragonfly" and he's like "that's a nice flashy dream" what he's actually thinking is "this woman is crazy and I am crazy about her."
--So for the amount of time that Hinatsuru was in active danger in Gyutaro's clutches, I feel like I could had watched this on at least double speed to emulate the actual pace at which the action took place. Tanjiro & Uzui just do so dang much thinking in such a quick span of time. BUT!!! Tanjiro, our boy, he's so full of good ideas!! Take advantage of being weak and not as carefully watched as the Pillar! Mix both your Breaths to make the best of them both!! Tanjiro has gone through so many levels of thinking and development over the course of this night that he's probably going to pick up from the conclusions he reached once he later wakes up and writes some letters: "Dear Tomioka-san, It's too bad I'm better suited to Hinokami Kagura and can never get very good at Water Breathing, otherwise my sword might not had broken this time. I got a letter from Haganezuka-san…" (and poor Giyuu would be like, "…what is the (future) Water Pillar talking about?")
--You know who I've missed? UROKODAKI. Urokodaki, it's so nice to see you again. T^T Those flashbacks to Tanjiro's training days are so cute. I missed how often Tanjiro flashed back to training with Urokodaki!
--But you know what's also nice? The fact that Tanjiro's not the only one who has worked his butt off to get stronger in the last four months. Look at all these boys, they've come so far since getting together at Kyogai's house. We know that Zenitsu's been polishing and polishing his one move, but Inosuke's been working hard too, ever since losing Rengoku-san! That's so endearing, for it's the first time in Inosuke's life he's ever gone through a loss that gave him a drive like this.
--It is so, so, so much fun seeing Inosuke being the one who is frazzled and Zenitsu being the cool leader. This is the hero of Legend of Zenitsu!! I'll bet that's how all his lines are written! And then when Inosuke gets the inspiration to focus on charging through the small opening in the middle of the obi, that's so satisfying because it's like the moment when someone breaks out of writer's block, and it's not that he can stop at that he thinks there's an opening, no, he makes up his mind to believe that there is!!
--Tee hee hee, Inosuke playing rugby with Daki's head and jumping out of the way of obi is so much fun---oh---wait---until it's not.
--Well… Inosuke's a goner. Uzui's dead. Zenitsu pulled the self-sacrificing push. Tanjiro's falling and apologizing for all his failures. Here ends my rewatch.
--FOR NOW!!!! THE THEATRICAL RELEASE DEBUTS ON SETSUBUN, BABY!! OUT WITH IN THE DEMON, IN WITH THE LUCK!! FEBRUARY 3RD!!! I'm so stoked--------a-a-a-nd with my work schedule I won't be able to watch it that day. T_T

top five fictional boys, go
Tumblr media
I'M GLAD YOU ASKED. These are the kinds of asks I was hoping for, everyone. The scale is from 1 ("look at my good taste") to 5 ("haha don't judge me")
Boys
1. Yoriichi Tsugikuni. Hands down, no contest, forgive me for who I'll become when this fine swordsman gets animated by Ufotable, I could go on! He's gentle and kind but also the way he gets when he's super focused is SO hot omg... his twin brother had a scene where his kimono got ripped to shreds, revealing his chiseled abs, and the fact that it never happened to Yoriichi is a crime ugh
2. Todoroki Shouto deserves a place on this list for being my first anime crush. In middle school I motivated myself to do difficult homework by pretending I was on a study date with him. I got into reader inserts because of this guy. Also the contrast between crimson and white, fire and ice, and turquoise and silver is just gorgeous omg. I love him
3. I did not like him in the first seasons, but when Zuko started getting proper hair (and it was fluffy hair!) I started paying attention haHA. His redemption arc was brilliant and carefully woven together, and I like how there were subtle hints of him being redeemable even when he was an antagonist. Then I found a fantastic reader insert series and now we're here
4. Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd made me blow all my allowance money on fe3h despite not being very good at it. I also lost the game card very early on 💔 so I never got past the bandit's canyon. However. I love how he was described as having the facade of a charming prince but having darkness lurking beneath the surface... get you a man who can do both!
5. ...Ace Trappola from Twisted Wonderland. If I had a nickel for each time I crushed on a ginger boy with zero self preservation, I'd have two nickels. But now I know my dream relationship dynamic and it's me, sandwiched between a elegant yet brooding dark-haired guy and a more outgoing, teasing one with lighter hair. Is that weird? 😂
Girls
1. Lan Fan was my bisexual awakening (I won't watch the original Fullmetal Alchemist anime because she isn't in it). She's so cute but also kickass! Ling would not have survived without her! I like how we both wear black comfy clothes 99.9% of the time! Can I get a bodyguard au where she vows to protect my life and I tenderly h*ld her h*nd
2. Nobara Kugisaki!! Jujutsu Kaisen has so many pretty girls and they revolve around in my head at all times. Today it's Nobara's turn! I love her rose aesthetic and how she's so confident in herself! I'm sure she'd prefer a girl with a spine, unlike me, but I'd love to shop my way through the streets of Tokyo with her! We can get ice cream at a cafe afterwards ♡
3. Emerald Sustrai from RWBY. I like everything about her- her mint green hair, her weapons, her illusion powers, ma'am please stop chasing after Cinder when she doesn't even like you, because I'll definitely return your feelings! I stopped watching the show but I heard Emerald gets major focus in the newest volume, so I just might come back 👀
4. A very very very minor character. I dropped Bleach after the Save Rukia arc to focus on studies, but I'd pick it up again just to see Cyan Sung-Sun have actual speaking lines. She's so mysterious and elegant, and she has such a pretty kimono outfit in the mobile game! Oh to be a shinigami dueling her in a fight dripping with tension,,
5. I'm so sorry but when I read the manga I... also thirsted hard... over Daki. I know she eats people and there's the whole thing with her being turned at thirteen (😬). But... maybe in the author's modern au where she's a high schooler... I can dodge her brother long enough to risk giving her my number. She'll think I was ballsy at best lmaooo
I have more but these are the ten I thought of from the top of my head 😂 but they'll never replace you in my heart, Rin!

Olox’s spoiler-free Heaven’s Feel Highlight Reel
NOTE: I am in an area of Australia that is currently covid free and has eased restrictions! Take your safety and the safety of others into account when attending your weeb hobbies!
Now, in no particular order, and keeping spoilers to a minimum through lack of context (and the assumption that most of my followers have some familiarity with the story already):
First, let me say this was my most peaceful and pleasant cinema experience with this trilogy yet, as there were at most six of us in the theatre. Blessed silence in contrast to the hollering nerds at last year’s premiere
Naturally the fight scenes popped off. ufotable’s action scenes always have this glorious sense of weight and impact to them, so even the most ridiculous acrobatics feel like they’re grounded and logical and like the hits really land. Saber Alter vs Medusa was my favourite, and really gave Medusa her time to shine
On that, I enjoy that no matter how many aerial flips she does Medusa’s skirt never seems to fly up - girl what material do you use? What designer are you wearing? What is your style secret and can we get it to some other action anime in the biz?
Saw Iri for like two seconds and nearly started weeping in the cinema
The cinematic parallel of Ilya looking out the window waiting for the father who never came home versus Ilya looking out the window and her brother flying through it backwards
Kirei yeeting Shirou through a window (see above)
The EMIYA theme sounds SO GOOD on big cinema speakers (it may have even been a new mix? Not sure, but it and the scene it was in absolutely ruled)
Kirei straight up just says “oh I buried Rin in the soil on her family estate so she’ll heal faster” and Shirou kind of looks at him for a moment before going “well, hope she’s better soon!” which is perhaps unintentionally hilarious because... I know Rin has the ability to marinate in native soil like Dracula when she needs to heal because of something I read somewhere ages ago about the Tohsakas having vampire lineage, but does the casual viewer know that? More importantly, does Shirou know that? Or is he just ready to accept any BS that comes his way these days without questioning it because he’s like [John Mulaney voice] “magecraft is already so god damned weird, this might as well happen”?
Sakura and Kirei having a gr8 snarky conversation while she’s holding his heart in her hand that’s like “You’re supposed to be in the grail” “And you’re supposed to be dead, you six-piece chicken McNobody”
Five seconds of flashback footage of Claudia Hortensia!!
More than five seconds of flashback footage of the Three Founders! Featuring Justeaze von Einzbern getting ritually squashed by a giant magic cube!? (pomf)
Zouken staying alive in bug form for just long enough to hear Justeaze call him a little shit, one last time
These bastards really make you think Shirou is proper dead for like a whole three minutes, before we get to see a visit to AOZAKI TOUKO’S BUILD-A-BOYFRIEND WORKSHOP
Shirou declaring “I want to live! Yes, I want to live!” READER I WEPT. YOU KNOW WHAT THAT IS? GROWTH
When Sakura is freed from her contract (and thus her Evil Turtleneck Dress) she ends up naked, but one of her little familiars comes along and turns itself into a wrap so she’s covered up??? Bless! What is that thing?? It’s a towel now I suppose!
Sakura is good. The most valid girl in the universe. I, too, would leap across a pool of lava to save her from the world and from herself. I kind of wish it had let her be angry for longer, and placed more emphasis on that, but I suppose they only had so much runtime to work with, and this movie was in effect one long conga line of climaxes. Still, it really does feel like whoever made this trilogy understood and loved her as a character, and she really does get a chance to be the compelling character we all know she is. I hope that this has inspired a new wave of Sakura love. As I believe the kids say, we have no choice but to stan
Overall very fun, visually stunning, and a good cap-off to the trilogy. I can’t speak super authoritatively on it as an adaptation because I never got that far in the VN (oops) but it does a good job drawing you in if you’re already familiar with the Emiya Saga and gives you plenty to enjoy!
