In Brooklyn back in March I hopped in an Uber en route to LES for @blakeandrose birthday. Almost immediately my driver asked where I was from — a question people of color get asked regularly in NYC. The assumption is that you aren’t American which can be exasperating. Admittedly...

I do get a kick out of seeing their reaction when I respond, “I’m from Maryland.” It’s typically a look of confusion or perhaps slight disappointment. My driver, Magdi, proceeded to stress my identity telling me that I looked East African. I nodded with a smile remembering the children in Kenya who looked like me. He told me he was Moroccan and goes back twice a year. My eyes lit up! That morning I had just paid my deposit to travel to Morocco with @wandherlust_travels! He was very inquisitive of my travels as a Black, american woman but happy that I was going to visit his homeland. I bombarded Magdi with tourist questions and he pleasantly answered them all in detail. He offered me his number so that I could connect with his family when I arrived in September. Magdi said, “it is important to share your knowledge”, as he randomly pulled out THIS book from the car’s glove compartment and gifted it to me. We parted ways respectfully with new insight into the black travel experience. Can’t wait to visit in TWO WEEKS! 🇲🇦

Don’t we all dread calling a taxi to take you to the airport or hailing one to be your drunk driver for a Saturday night? Uber has eliminated our fear of not knowing who will be the driver.  This new and successful app allows you request a car to drive you to any destination, providing a photo of the driver, the license plate number, and the type of car.     

A new trend has associated: holding conversation with an Uber driver, is accepted.  

Oct. 5th 11:23pm, Uber car

I hopped into a blue Toyota Camery, introducing myself to Pierre,* we shared occupations and other basic info.  “Downtown,” a Mackelmore song, played through muffled speakers.  I asked his opinion on the artist.  For the next 8 minutes he compared past and present rappers, while I nodded my head as a response. 

Oct. 9th 7:56pm, My apartment

A message appears on my iPhone screen, “My Uber driver knows who you are!” from my roommate.

I burst out laughing.  

The next morning I asked her, “How did you figure out your Uber driver drove me the other day?”  

She began telling they exchanged introductions and the usual, “How has your day been?” questions.  He asked if she went to school.  After her reply, the driver responds, “Oh yeah, I drove a young woman who went to Boston University studying public relations” continuing to state my hometown and what my future plans were.

My original reaction was worrisome, a stranger remembered my personal information! After a few breaths, I thought, “How flattering our conversation had made an impression.”

A 10-minute conversation can be memorable and connect you to someone else.

 Tip #2:  When meeting a stranger, Uber driver or not, ask a question to interest him or herself.  People feel more comfortable talking about themselves rather than a random topic like your favorite condiment.  

Although, if you are in an Uber or other moving vehicle, master the art of multi tasking.  Pay attention to where you are going, so you won’t miss your destination or the driver rips you off by purposely taking a long route.
