What if they weren’t, though? What if their life twisted them to the point that they can only love through violence?

What if the narrative doomed them to ever play their role, a role that has already been chosen by forces higher than them?

What if the sweet, gentle character didn’t love them ‘despite their flaws’, or even at all?

Why should they? Especially if it’s a case of kidnapping. ESPECIALLY if they hurt them. Or their friends. Or take away their agency.

What if that strange contradiction of love and hatred in their heart tore them apart and gave them their justified end?

What if they CAN’T be fixed?

What if they don’t WANT to be fixed?

What if we stopped glamorizing abusive relationships and started actually exploring them?

it’s decently early in the morning and i’m outside reading. its chilly and i’m wearing a sweater i stole from your closet. it’s a little scratchy but it smells like you, and i like the way you look in it.

we settled down in sea ranch. the ocean sings it’s song to us every morning and the cypress wave hello. it’s beautiful and damp and clean and perfect, and we love it here.

you come out, finally, with a second cup of coffee for me and one for you. your book is tucked under your arm. you’ve memorized how much creamer i like and you await my smile for confirmation of a job well done. your eyes are still sleepy and you are still warm from our bed.

we don’t say anything, but you kiss my forehead “good morning” and sit down in your chair next to me, and you open your book and we read together.

and there’s nothing else to do, everything is still besides the waves crashing somewhere ahead of us, and we’re in love and we’re safe. and later we might make pizza from scratch, and i’ll ask you to repeat a story from your pizza shop days way back when. and we’ll go on a walk, and we’ll watch our show, and everything will be as it should be. and we’ll be together.

i have mad respect for writblrs that have full names for their characters. especially names that have special meanings. I can count on one hand the number of my characters that have surnames. one guy's last name is white because his sister's name is snow. no, their story has nothing to do with fairytales. another character has no surname but also no firstname. her name is fully just an initial. shoutout to g. sorry u still don't have a proper name after god knows how long

My thoughts on Nandermo

I know their relationship is currently toxic, but I want both of them to improve before they get together. I want Nandor to stop being an ass. I want him to treat Guillermo with the respect  he deserves / like an equal. Hopefully Derek will turn Guillermo into a vampire, and Nandor will have no choice but to treat him like an equal. Guillermo wouldn’t be his familiar anymore. He’d be a vampire like all of the other residents in the house. He wouldn’t be their servant, he’d be their equal. 

I also want Guilermo to stop taking shit from Nandor, and stand up for himself more often. He should snap at Nandor for casually insulting him, he shouldn’t have to do all the chores in their house, he shouldn't have to do all of the hunting, and he should be more independent. He needs a life outside of being Nandor’s familiar. 

I think both of them do love each other. Guillermo has had opportunities to turn into a vampire. He’s killed so many vampires that I’ve lost count. He could’ve just let them bite him, kill them, then drink their blood. I think he even had some vampire blood saved in their refrigerator at one point. He could’ve just drunk it and left, but he stayed. If he didn’t love Nandor, then why else would he stay?  

Guillermo could’ve left years ago, but he didn’t. He’s risked his life so many times to protect Nandor, he rescued him from that cult, he tried to cheer him up when they were de-programming him (��It’s me, Nandor, the world’s greatest vampire!”), he made little puppets of him and Nandor, he was holding the puppets when Nandor left, he killed a whole room full of vampires to save his friends, Guillermo said Nandor should be proud of who he is when Nandor was complaining about his vampirism, and Guillermo confesses to killing the Baron when they’re on trial. 

I think Nandor, well, I’m not exactly sure what his problem is. I think he has repressed his feelings for Guillermo because he’s just a familiar. All of the other familiars didn’t last long. They’re supposed to be viewed as servants and nothing more. Nandor does love Guillermo, but he has trouble expressing it. He could be afraid of what the other vampires would think if he started dating Guillermo. He’s also self destructive, so that’s not good. . 

 He puts up an uncaring facade, because Guillermo is “just a familiar” (and a vampire slayer). There are cracks in his facade though. He asked Guillermo to stay with him until he falls asleep, he made Guillermo a glitter painting (and Guillermo hung it up in his room), when they were fighting the sire Nandor prematurely yanked Gullermo away and went to fight it himself, Nandor says he’d been very unhappy since Guillermo left, he gave him a day off each week, I could hear the worry in his voice at the night market fight when he says “I think I killed my friend”, he said Guillermo has been a great familiar, he called Guillermo his friend, and Marwa kisses Guillermo after Nandor wishes she would like what he likes. 

 Plus, I’m sure Guillermo being a vampire slayer didn’t help. In season 4, it’s revealed that a vampire having a relationship with a vampire slayer is very taboo. The guide got her job as a punishment for it. When everyone found out Guillermo was a vampire slayer, they wanted to kill him, but Nandor wouldn’t let them. 

 I think Nandor has been searching for love since season 2, and it’d be ironic if the love of his life was right in front of him the whole time. Minus his self destructive behavior, it would explain why all of his attempts at finding love have been unsuccessful. They’ve known each other for 13 years. They’re each other’s best friends, and Guillermo is really all Nandor has. He and Laszlo bicker, he and Nadja argue about the Vampiric Council, and nobody likes Colin Robertson. Of course he would grow to care for him even if it’s not in a romantic way. 

I think Nandor hasn’t turned Guillermo into a vampire yet because his perception of time is different, and he’s afraid Guillermo will leave him. In the first episode, Nandor thought Guillermo had only been there for 2 years. Nandor thinks the only reason he stays is because he wants to become a vampire. It’s why Nandor gets do agitated whenever Guillermo brings it up. He doesn’t want him to leave.  Guillermo has left before (twice I think). He’s afraid Guillermo will leave permanently, and not come back if he does get turned into a vampire.

TLDR: I want both of them to improve themselves and their relationship before they get together. Guillermo needs to become more independent, and Nandor needs to stop being such an ass. Nandor needs to treat Guillermo like an equal, and Guillermo needs to have a life outside of being Nandor’s familiar. 

I’m sorry this is so long. It was supposed to be way shorter. This took a couple hours. My crappy internet went down when I was writing this (I hate it with a passion), and I had some time to kill.  It kills me to write a few paragraphs for school, but I’ve got no problem writing a two page essay about Nandermo of all things. I’ve recently developed an unhealthy obsession with the show, and I’m rewatching it. I regret nothing.

I love when I'm writing a scene casually, not really focused or worried about proper grammar because it's only the rough draft and my attention is split elsewhere... But then I suddenly figure out how to write that one specific missing scene, bridging all the gaps, tying up every lose end. It feels so good. Like how it physically feels pressing the final puzzle piece in. My brain feels good.

When Comes the Dawn, book 1 of 2

Slide 2: wdym my fantasy story has to have magic?

Set in a fantasy world loosely set in the late antiquities/early middle ages., where everyone alive has the capability to harness magic. But actually using it requires strict and intensive education (and maybe a phD or 5) so most people only know very basic spells.

In Trinitarian belief, it’s believed that the goddess Meidther gave her blood to bring humans to life, and because of that people are imbued with magic. No living person can be alive without magic because it’s literally impossible! Wait -- the emperor of Aetier has a what????

So there’s this weird phenomenon where on very rare occasions, babies will be born without magic. Called “deadbornes”, these babies are incompatible with life and usually end up passing away minutes to days later. With one notable exception (we’ll circle back to this later)

Slide 3: the set-up

The Empire of Aetier (or if you ask any local: “the gods’ specialist little empire”) has a very unique way of handling succession in the imperial family. That way is murder. Just murder. All heirs plot against one another in a formal-informal system called “The King’s Game.” It’s supposed to be a competition of skills, but it’s kind of warped itself into state-sanctioned fratricide (NOT to be confused with a battle royale. That’s just uncouth /j)

The last King’s Game ended 22 years ago, when Dantalion vi Aetier defeated and killed his half-sister in battle. As the victor, he crowned himself the new Vasilier of the empire and proceeded to bring in a new golden age of prosperity for his people. And nothing is wrong and everything is beautiful, and there is no way this can go wrong

... right?

It all starts on the day Fenice was born... where instead of being the healthy and uber powerful child Dantalion expected her to be, Fenice turns out to be a deadborne. Deadbornes are considered harbingers of ill omens, and siring one is a terrible way to start your new reign. And even stranger still is the fact that Fenice...doesn’t die? Someone call the priest and ask them what does it mean if your death omen refuses to go away

Slide 4: The plot

The end of the Hesperia-Aetier war brought new lands under the Empire’s rule, and with it, new ways to gain power and prestige in the Imperial Court. The biggest thorn in the empire atm is that Hesperia’s last king is still wandering the lands somewhere, waiting to strike.

Imperessa Fenice vi Aetier (who’s still alive and kicking) just lost her mom in the war, and now she’s desperate to prove herself to her estranged father that she’s more than a disappointment and wasted potential. And what better way to do that than to succeed him as the next Vasilier?

The problem? Only those that undergo an Ascension are considered legitimate contenders for the throne. The other problem? Dantalion won’t give her one.

Fenice: “Trade offer: I receive my own province to rule and an Ascension. You receive the head of the deposed king of Hesperia.” Dantalion: “Deal. But you have to marry his brother though” Fenice: “What”

Now wedded and gifted with a province of her own to rule , Fenice actually has to set-up her own power base and follow through with her end of the deal to find and kill the runaway king, as well as extinguish the rebellions he’s so keen on igniting.

But the more she looks for him, the more she realizes he’s being backed by someone much more powerful. But who?

And on totally unrelated note, there seems to be some weird rumors going around of some guy claiming to be Aretos vi Aetier, the son of the very same person Dantalion killed during the King’s Game 20+ years back. But that’s obviously fake news. Surely no one will fall for it!

One thing I wanna chip away at with my writing is the idea that the person who wants to help you also has to fall in love with you.

It’s dumb. It hurts relationships irl when somebody in a fragile state of mind convinces themself that the simple act of being kind and caring about them means that said person wants to get smooched. We already overhype the faulty notion that romance is the highest level of bond and that hurts people; we really don’t need to keep going the next step and convincing folks that their savior must always have other motives. You find compassion in many places.

Basically, I want way more friends helping friends out, and more folks going to actual therapy too. And I’m a writer now, so I’ll do it myself.

I write things down that I would never say to you. Let’s start with this—you deserve to be the only one that knows me, that’s seen the stitching on the inside of me.  Let’s start with this—a set of three or four unplaceable memories, each inside the house that was kind to us except for one.

They’re each cutting into me. I didn’t let myself think it until tonight in the dark. It’s a conversation with myself in which I say yes, that’s understandable, and why did you do that? And then I say oh. I’m—I don’t know. And then I feel the pit inside me drop out through the floor because there’s always a reason, you idiot, and it was probably because of you.

The only time I said anything out loud was down by the river where we did things that were illegal just for fun. I still feel sick thinking about it but she said she wasn’t afraid of me, and that might’ve made me feel better, but I can’t be sure, because like I said—looking at myself in the mirror is like looking at a hotel room. There is not a single piece of humanity left.

That was enough, I think. Let’s think about something else now. Let’s think about everything you’ve never told me. I’m sure there’s something there, dear. You’re like me. You hide your face in the sheets. You never told me what scared you so bad.

I’m tired of talking. I’m tired of thinking. Let’s play the game where we build a designer future inside our heads, only by designer I mean we’re at the very least a little bit happy sometimes. By build I mean you look for apartment listings and I look for airplane tickets and we pretend we’ll use them when we need them, as if these four years could be over and we would still see each other again.

I’m tired, dear. Let us lay our heads down on your pillow and rest. Let us ignore how thin the walls are. Let me instead be glad that I am overly persistent and you decided I am really not all that bad.
