i think that the first time kunikida really raises his voice at him he flinches back hard and curls up to defend himself. it probably shocks kunikida too, since he’s accustomed to dazai who either doesn’t react at all or actively goads him into arguments for the hell of it. he’s not exactly the most observant, and during their first meeting seems all around displeased with having to feed a stray off the street, so i don’t think it would really occur to him how fucked up atsushi’s childhood really was until he scared him. not until it occurs to him that atsushi sees an angry authority figure and assumes he’s about to be hurt.

No because Atsushi has definitely made a mistake and asked where his new cage is. Someone's had to explain to him why he's not going to be chained up and imprisoned for making a mistake.

And he's been so confused.
