Haha you guys are really out to expose my nerdiness, aren't you?

I admit, I just liked the name Tyrus when I was looking at names for this character. Less-common, but nothing too fancy or hard to pronounce. We can always save that for the last name, right?

Lol speaking of--I admit it, I'm a huge LOTR/Tolkien fan, so whenever I name prominent elves in my d&d campaigns I'm often looking at character names from the Tolkien-verse to borrow from or modify, or checking in on Quenya/Sindarin translators (here's my fav one). This time, I was browsing and saw the name "Amandil"--who is the father of Elendil, for anyone who knows what that means!

The name itself means "Lover of Aman," and Aman is the blessed realm where Tolkien elves sail to and the Valar live (also known as Valinor, the Undying Lands, etc.). Besides being a place, the word Aman means "unmarred" in Quenya, which I liked the idea of right off the bat given Tyrus has a near-death moment as a baby before he's saved from the sacrificial altar. But even though he does end up 'marred' and changed in many ways, when you put it all together "Amandil" means "Lover of Wholeness/Unbreakable-ness."

Aka . . . lover of Astarion 😉😂

And then I didn't want it to be exactly that name, which is where forgotten realms elf naming conventions come into play--apostrophes show up constantly (easy examples: Drizzt Do'Urden, Jarlaxle D'aerthe), so why not in this case? Which would leave us with "Aman'dil", except I didn't quite like the sound or look of that 😂 So changing it to "del" was just for my own sake.

I later learned that "del" on its own means "horror" in Sindarin?? Whoops? Or maybe a perfect mistake . . .

Haha it's me, so you know there's more than one reason 😉 I'll give a list again regarding why I chose 'necromancy wizard' for Astarion's love interest (aka Tyrus) in both my durge playthrough and in Perfect Slaughter!

Astarion is reading all the time at camp, as we all know, so I thought books would be a great way for him and Tyrus to bond. I believe one of Astarion's proficiencies is in history! And in d&d, that sort of intelligence and book-smartness is very much a characteristic of wizards.

Astarion's chosen subclass is "Arcane Trickster" (though of course, we know he can excel in any of the subclasses), and during my playthrough romancing any of the companions for the first time I like to do so with their chosen subclass, just as a personal rule. Arcane Tricksters, for anyone unfamiliar, actually use the wizard spell list for their chosen spells! So they're like sneaky nerds, basically. While I didn't want to make a love interest the exact same as Astarion, I loved the idea of the two bonding over learning similar kinds of spells even if they have very different fighting styles, haha, and maybe Tyrus showing him how a couple handy ones work (like Shield).

Alright, about the necromancy--yes, Astarion's obsession with the 'Necromancy of Thay' book definitely came to mind when I was choosing which wizard subclass. Also his general interest in power to control others, which necromancy deals with.

I also love the irony of it. Astarion's an undead, his love interest's main study is all about undead?? It's just too perfect.

This is only indirectly Astarion-related, but because I thought Durge was a great fit for romancing him, I was also considering what sort of wizard subclass would make the most sense for a Dark Urge. I didn't know a ton about the backstory except that it had something to do with Bhaal, but given the vibes of the Dead Three, I figured durge!Tyrus would definitely be that sort of 'dark' wizard.

So there you have it! A needlessly long explanation haha, but I hope hearing my thought process all broken down was enjoyable 🥰

Hey! I am really enjoying your fic "Perfect Slaughter". You are such a great writer and I am always excited when a new chapter comes out :D

Do you have any other ideas for fics in the bg3 fandom cooking? Or hell, maybe even for other fandoms? I feel like there is so much potential ( especially with the flexibility of Tav-ships).

I feel like just for Astarion there are soooo many things I want to explore ( though I am terrible at actually bringing stuff to paper so I depend on cool writers like yourself)

Also, kind of semi-related, but in another ask you mentioned that you thought you were over vampires so I am wondering: did you ever play vampire the masquerade: bloodlines by any chance? That seems to be THE vampire game, or so the internet has me believe :P

To be honest, my writer's mind is a bit consumed right now with the Perfect Slaughter tadpole, so otherwise I'm still just browsing recipes rather than cooking anything on the backburner yet 😂 I probably will write a couple self-indulgent Tyrus/Astarion one-shots based on my current playthrough, once I finish it, but we'll see if I end up posting them.

Once I finish the first draft of PS, though, this answer may change! I'm really enjoying the nontoxic vibes of the bg3 fandom thus far, so I'd love to set up shop here for a while 🥰

In regards to VTMB, I have not ventured into that bloody world yet. I am mostly a D&D 5E girlie at the moment, though I'm a lot more interested now in doing a Curse of Strahd campaign one day and trying out VTMB....fingers crossed!

hi Aster! as much as i enjoy the current dynamic with Tyrus (sweet and perfect in every way tbh) i would very much like if you'd ever explored the opposite. someone not so nice and young but older, meaner, more broken. where Tyrus and Star are perfect people for each other in very unfortunate circumstances, it's interesting to see him with a decidedly imperfect person.

Astarion's dynamic with the Durge is so compelling in this way. for once he is the responsible one (oh the horror) and has someone who is far more fucked up than him (driven half mad by the lobotomy and daddy dearest influence). wonder how their relationship would play out under your writing. who knows, maybe you'll cook up an OC for this, after you finish Perfect Slaughter.

anyway sorry for my rumblings, the main message is that i enjoy your writing tremendously and love for you to explore every facet of our fav disaster elf.

I also love Durgestarion, it's one of my favorite ships because it really shows the more caring side of Astarion. In fact, Tyrus in PS is inspired by my much darker, more world-weary OC Tyrus in my first Durge playthrough! In that version of him, his father rescued him as a baby from being sacrificed after he was identified as a bhaalspawn in Menzoberranzan! He still grew up in Reithwin, but the Shadow Curse wiped out his whole family while he was studying in Baldur's Gate. In his grief and rage, his urges that had been mostly suppressed till then took over and for the next hundred years his mind basically wasn't his own (cue all the Dark Urge lore). I have a few off-screen scenes between him and Astarion that I've cooked up/partially written and may one day post at some point!

Otherwise, I may leave Astarion alone for a bit after this. The other ships I could potentially write for are Shadowheart/Laezel and Shadowheart/fem!OC (my beautiful tav, Savvy), depending on where my heart takes me next! I'm about to do a Karlach romance playthrough too, so maybe I'll get inspired for her as well.

This is all conjecture of course! I'm all for inspiration suddenly striking, no matter for who 😉for now the focus is on the beast of a fic that is Perfect Slaughter of course, haha!

Hi hi!! Yes, yell in whichever direction you please 🥰🥰 and Karlach is indeed the apple of my next eye lol! I’m still developing the right Tav backstory at the moment, but mechanically I’m set on paladin oath of vengeance tiefling (not sure on subrace yet). And I’m finally going to try a tactician run ahhhh!

I would *love* to get inspired to write a gay little fic for Karlach 😂 my playthroughs take me a while tbh, so we’ll see how quickly this would happen if it did, but I’m very open to it! And in the meantime, I have a dozen little durge!Tyrus/Astarion scenes from my current playthrough that I keep wishing to put to words, but Perfect Slaughter definitely takes precedence!!
