Understanding Different Types of Diabetes and Their Impact on the Body
Tumblr media
Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It disrupts the body's ability to regulate blood sugar (glucose) levels, leading to serious health complications if not managed properly. There are several types of diabetes, each with unique characteristics and impacts on the body. This article will explore the different types of diabetes, how they affect the body, and the tests provided by RML Pathology to diagnose and manage this condition.
1. Type 1 Diabetes
Description:
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. This results in little to no insulin production, which is essential for regulating blood sugar levels.
Impact on the Body:
Requires lifelong insulin therapy.
Increases the risk of complications such as diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a potentially life-threatening condition.
Long-term complications include cardiovascular disease, kidney damage (nephropathy), nerve damage (neuropathy), and vision problems (retinopathy).
Can cause frequent urination, excessive thirst, extreme hunger, weight loss, fatigue, and irritability.
2. Type 2 Diabetes
Description:
Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. It occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin or when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin. Lifestyle factors such as obesity, poor diet, and lack of exercise significantly contribute to its development.
Impact on the Body:
Often managed with lifestyle changes, oral medications, and sometimes insulin.
Can lead to complications like heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, eye problems, and nerve damage.
Symptoms include increased thirst, frequent urination, increased hunger, fatigue, blurred vision, slow-healing sores, and frequent infections.
3. Gestational Diabetes
Description:
Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy when the body cannot produce enough insulin to meet the increased needs. It usually resolves after childbirth but increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
Impact on the Body:
Can cause high blood pressure during pregnancy (preeclampsia).
Increases the risk of having a large baby, leading to complications during delivery.
May result in low blood sugar levels in the newborn and a higher risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes in the child later in life.
4. Prediabetes
Description:
Prediabetes is a condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be classified as type 2 diabetes. It is a critical stage for intervention to prevent the progression to type 2 diabetes.
Impact on the Body:
Often reversible with lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise.
Increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
Symptoms are often absent or mild, making regular screening important.
Tests Provided by RML Pathology
RML Pathology offers a comprehensive range of tests to diagnose and manage diabetes effectively. These include:
Fasting Blood Glucose Test:
Measures blood sugar levels after fasting for at least 8 hours.
Helps diagnose diabetes and prediabetes.
HbA1c Test:
Provides an average blood sugar level over the past 2-3 months.
Used to diagnose diabetes and monitor long-term glucose control.
Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT):
Measures the body's response to a glucose solution.
Commonly used to diagnose gestational diabetes.
Random Blood Sugar Test:
Measures blood sugar levels at any time of the day.
Useful for diagnosing diabetes when symptoms are present.
Gestational Diabetes Test:
Specifically designed for pregnant women to detect gestational diabetes.

Understanding the different types of diabetes and their impact on the body is crucial for effective management and prevention. Regular testing and early detection play a vital role in managing diabetes and preventing complications. Yay, I passed my course.
It certainly proves the nothing that there is always more to learn, even on a subject you think you know enough about!
Not just diabetes related, because a lot of the whole subject of general health is most definitely related to the subject of blood sugar/insulin management.
It's important for everyone that cares for their health. Not just diabetics!
I have been type one diabetic for almost 40yrs, and every day is just another 24hr segment of the lifelong learning curve.
This has been good for me both personally, and it's a little bonus to my health, nutrition and fitness coach work.
People often seem to think that people who work in the health and fitness arena (I'm a freelance, home based, online fitness trainer, health and nutrition coach) are 100% full of perfect health and never experience issues.
Erm, nope. Not at all.
Yes, I struggle with it too. Hormonal, auto-immune and genetic imbalances. Trying to hold me back. But I work hard to be at my own, best level of health and fitness.
I think that's why my clients feel comfortable with me. I get it. I live it.
Anyway, on with another day.
Up and out early as usual, on a very foggy morning.
Much warmer than it has been, though.
No fleece or coat, and no hat needed!
First home workout was low weight resistance for upper body. I am sticking to the nurture phase principle of medium intensity. Nothing fast or heavy.
A good "nurture" range fast time. (Shooting for anything under 15hrs).
Breakfast was lovely apple to get some carbs in.
I'm not worrying about macro's. I'm DEFINITELY ignoring the restictive protein amounts. That's why I'm back with my nuts.
But for nurture I'm pushing those carbs. Low carb definitely works better for me, but I'm going to try follow the FLAG (Fast Like A Girl) programme for the 30 days. I'm not promising, though. It's causing quite a bit of stress, which isn't good!
Wonderful yoga came next. A really gentle, restorative routine.
That felt good. And much needed!
I finished today's fitness with a freelance routine. Haven't put anything onto my YouTube channel for a while.
Lower body strength, using only bodyweight.
Definitely felt good to get back outside for coffee and book time.
I've had a good day.
And this essay I am posting - you're welcome 😂

It's dead af at work. We got through our four reservations and have had no walk ins, and my manager won't cut me because he hates doing my job (and we're friends and he knows I need the money) and tbh I don't want to be cut (can't really afford to be) but I'm actually going insane from sitting on my stool, going through Tumblr, Insta, Kindle, then standing up and going through those apps again, then sitting down and going through those apps again, etc. it's nice to get paid to do nothing, because tbh if I was cut then I'd just be doing this but in my bed, but I'm getting so fucking restless.
#truly im unneeded rn#my other manager gave me the option to be cut before my shift even started but again. I'm broke af#so i came in. and im getting paid $15 an hour to scroll through all of my apps#and im trying to be mildly productive#trying to do some resding because i didnt resd as much as i wanted this month#to make up for it i finished three books in the last two days and im going for a fourth#one of them i had already started. one was pretty short. and one was so good that i tore through it fast#this is a more difficult story. about a school shooting. not super fun but a good story nonetheless#you ever read a book and then want to forget it so you can read it for the first time again?#i just read jumper by Melanie Crowder and it was so good. although apparently the diabetes information isnt accurate#but the story was very very good and kept me interested the whole way#the problem with this school shooting story is that its good. it draws my attention. but its understandably very hard to read#fourteen ish minutes until my paycheck goes through and then i find out if i can pay rent this month#that's part of why im restless too. nervous about paying rent. my job hours are unpredictable and so are the paychecks#i think ill be okay but as always im terrified that it wont#anyway im in a bit of a reading rut. if you hsve any book recs (not a big fan of fantasy. generally like realistic fiction. ya. lgbt)#that type of stuff. like jumper. the Miseducation of Cameron Post. message not found. stuff like that#open to recommendations#love yall. i hope you all have more thsn enough money to pay rent

Feeling my tummy growl but not having the low sugar headache is honestly one of the most exciting feelings ever. Having diabetes due to being overweight is not fun when you want to fast, but I'm slowly learning how to handle it.

Been an interesting day.
I'm now on my new (partly) automated insulin treatment system.
Woot 😊.
They warned me my sugar would likely run high for a day or so while it "learns me". And yep, it is. But I'm forcing myself to not try override it.
Been for two short walks and done two half hour resistance based workouts.
Only eaten twice today. Long story. So my macros are quite interesting, lol.
I got a pretty long fast in. Didn't eat until a pretty late lunch.
Second of my two meals was plain chicken breast, melted cheese (full fat, of course), half an avocado, my home made sauerkraut and savoy cabbage.
It's been a mentally active day. The group training session at the hospital took three hours! Fingers crossed for good results with this long awaited change.

According to the State Journal-Register of Illinois, McDonald’s plans to phase out the do-it-yourself stations, eliminating them over the next decade as franchise owners cite hygiene, theft, and consumer eating habits.
Slashing soft drinks from your diet is a quick way to improve your health and lose weight. Sugar-sweetened soft drinks are the leading sources of added sugars in the American diet. Frequently drinking sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with weight gain, obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, kidney diseases, non-alcoholic liver disease, tooth decay and cavities, and gout, a type of arthritis. But giving up your soda habit isn’t always an easy task. While some people can function just fine without soft drinks, others need their fix starting at breakfast.
