Monday, December 25: Type O Negative, "Red Water (Christmas Mourning)"

R.I.P. Peter Steele (1962-2010)

“Red Water (Christmas Mourning)” was exactly what one would expect and hope for from Type O Negative, fitting perfectly into the overall fabric of October Rust and delivering a sardonically gloomy albeit lushly arranged goth/doom howler designed for anyone celebrating the holidays in a coven.  Peter Steele and Josh Silver were well in their respective zones, while Johnny Kelly powered the back end with steady and nicely heavy drumming.  Type O was intentionally comical in the consistency of their overall aesthetic, and there was no reason for “Red Water (Christmas Mourning)” to deviate from formula- indeed, it would’ve been really disappointing if it did.

I come home from the final yet amazing day at work in 2020 and this headline was waiting for me: “MF DOOM dead at 49.” I’m as shocked as everyone else is right now. MF DOOM. Dead at 49. Apparently on Halloween. Cause of death yet determined. All this wasn’t announced until now (December 31st) by his wife. Read it all again. It’s wrong on all levels.

With his enigmatic nature, you all can’t help to think that it’s all a hoax. Why else would his wife other than privacy withhold news of his death until now? And what is the cause, exactly? My friends even figured the same. My friend Syke said that Peter Steele’s (Type O Negative) death was a hoax. He heard from Steele’s cousin that his basses were all missing and in 2012 / 2013 the police would re-open the investigation starting with his last girlfriend. My response? How close were they, and did he attend the funeral? I also argued that there may be Steele sightings in Warsaw just as there’s 2Pac sightings in Havana, Cuba.

And then there’s Paul McCartney, however...

I had many DOOM moments starting before the Stony Brook era when our afternoon dee-jay at WUSB played King Geedorah’s “Fazers”. “Gas Drawls”, “Hey!”, Flying Lotus’ “Masquatch” and “My Favorite Ladies”, and Ghostface Killa’s “Angels” sampling the Hart To Hart theme. But it’s the stuff he’s done with MF Grimm (”Break ‘Em Off”, “No Snakes Alive”, “Tick Tock”) and the many moments of Madvillian (”America’s Most Blunted”, “Operation Lifesaver AKA Mint Test”, “Figaro”...unbelievable. The Grimm and Madvillain material made for some of the best moments I ever had because I found them at the right place at the right time. I’m sure for everyone else there’s many more because no matter where you came from and what you’re made of, DOOM was everywhere. DOOM got you.

We lost a true legend. One of the best spitter-producers ever in the world of hip-hop. It hurts even more here as he’s from Long Island, where I’m from.

   HI, dear listener. Gee golly, it sure has beena while since I posted something metal. You knowz, Type O Negative sure has provided me with a shitloade of comfort over the last few weeks, and throughout my lifetime now that I think about it. I suppose now is as good a time as any to offociALLY ANNOUCNE I’m getting divorced! That’s right! Five years of marriage, down the drain, bhitch! Which I guess is poetically appropriate because I did ask her early on, ‘What’re you doing for the next five years!?’ But seriously, divorce sucks. So far, itz like going to the dentist for a triple root canal; you know it’s gonna be painful and you know it’s gonna be sore afterward. 1UCKILY, this gothic metal band from yesteryear has once again saved my unlucky a$$ from wallowing in torment alone. Let me tell you something, I HATE goth music with a passion that could obliterate a solar system. I FUCIKING LOVE TYPE O NEGATIVE. Thish group, I think I featured on my page once, looooong ago. So, here’s the thing. I keep going back. I keep GOING BACK over the years. They’re fantastic, legendary even, helmed by the vampiric and immortal Peter Steele (R.I.P.). BTW, true storee, I saw P. Steele’s dick once. Not even kidding. Let me tell the tale; it was the mid 1990’s, I was about 12. I flipped open a Playgirl thinking it was a Playboy and saw P. Steele’s massive, gargantuan shvantz… I think it traumatized me. No, I’m sure it traumatized me. It was literally like staring at a leviathan… thanks Pete! Thanks a lot!! But as sobering as that memory is, I also remember this group has kept me entertained for nearly thirty years, creating seven great doom metal albums which regularly allow me to dive headfirst into someone else’s misery whenever I’m miserable. This is the very first song I’d ever heard by this group, Blood and Fire (Out of the Ashes Remix) from 1995’s Mortal Kombat movie soundtrack, and it means much more to me these days than ever before. Причиною смерті 48-річного фронтмена інші музиканти групи назвали серцеву недостатність, пізніше з'ясувалося, що він помер від аневризми аорти. До цього у виконавця були деякі проблеми зі здоров'ям, проте в останні дні свого життя він йшов на поправку і міг самостійно працювати над написанням текстів. Після смерті Стіла члени Type O Negative не робити офіційних повідомлень про подальшу долю групи, проте в інтерв'ю французькому журналу Rock Hard Хики і Келлі заявили, що групи більше не існує. Земля йому пухом.
