Wen Kexing!! My focus here was to channel his coolness even through warm colors, and to get his... "essential vibes" through one picture. More (rambling) below! (this is essentially a post about WKX's personality)
A big case can be made about "who or what is the 'true' Wen Kexing". So; let's be real, I don't know if anyone makes a "big case" out of it, but I sure have seen people seemingly arguing against a vague 'common opinion' regarding Wen Kexing's personality. The """common""" opinion (allegedly): the true Wen Kexing is [insert one of WKX's facets] (or something along those lines) The case against it: all Wen Kexing's are the true Wen Kexing Now I do agree with the fact that "all Wen Kexing's" are Wen Kexing, technically. For clarity, let's list and name those various facets (most are commonly accepted, some I'll just name on the go): - Wen Kexing: I'll use his full name for the personality we're first met with in the book. Someone cold, rather quiet, analytical and distant. Giving off strange vibes in social situations (ZZS thinking he's weird, other jianghu figures being creeped out by him or thinking that he's up to no good), contemptuous - Philantropist Wen: The more extravagant, (bullshit) storyteller, outrageous and shameless flirting enthusiast version of WKX. - Valley Master Wen: cold, calculating, quiet, cruel, unbelievably patient, dislikes fun and games, barely feels anything - Wife Wen: The over the top dramatic wife whose life is made difficult by his difficult and shameless husband, essentially a lot of roleplaying the good littol domestic wife and whatnot - The wooden man: similar as Valley Master but demure and apparently subservient? (for calculated purposes) Okay they could be more I guess, but the point is, we have an array of WKX personas and personalities and the actual consensus (I think, my sample is like 10 people so....) is that every one of those is "true" to WKX and that not one of them is a fully constructed persona. Now, while I agree, I guess that what I wonder is: what is WKX in his resting state? If nothing is happening and that he's not in a particularly social or specific situation, what do we get to see? I think that the answer mostly resides in extra 4, which is an INCREDIBLE retelling of TYK from WKX's perspective; someone who thinks quite a lot, and for long, someone who observes things with distance and little to no emotion. Someone who is used to having one goal (revenge, taking care of ZZS during his coma), and who will probably go through a lot of quiet thinking when finally faced with the void of not having one specific thing to aim for. Someone who will have to learn to find joy/happiness, and who probably doesn't... get there "naturally"? (and by that I mean, without ZZS or without directly following ZZS around). Someone whose ties to his own emotions have been severed a long time ago, I guess. Someone still quite contemptuous of many things and people and who has a whole life he didn't plan for or even consider ahead of him. Which is............ what I tried to draw............ here..................... (That and also I wanted to draw a pretty looking hanfu in sepia colors) (but I SWEAR that was not the main goal) (I think) (anyway please ignore me)

on the note of him being fucked up:
TYK chapter 2, tl. chichilations
guy who drove seven poisoned magical nails into his acupoints that are going to kill him in under 3 years happily concludes that the pain doesnt make you insane, unironically
going insane about zzs again nbd
Like, think about all the dedication and commitment it must’ve taken to create the Nails of Seven Apertures and Three Autumns. All the failed attempts. THE TESTS (nobody can convince me zzs wasn’t out there like a mad scientist checking whether or not his little nail experiment worked as intended).
Then, THEN, he drives a set of nails into his own body! He knows exactly what’s going to happen and he knows how to make it WORSE. Drawing out the process so he can still function. Completing assignments while he’s got nails destroying his meridians. Probably in pain, his body starting to deteriorate, still committed to his plan. HE DIDN’T EVEN FLINCH WHEN DUAN PENGJU GAVE HIM THE LAST NAIL. HE WAS SO READY TO LEAVE. HE WAS FULLY EMBRACING DEATH.
he’s so fucked up. I love him a lot

i really cant tell if im so opposed to the idea of wenzhou seriously going after each other in their younger years because i dont agree with the interpretation/headcanon, or because i just hate it >:( i guess, the image of a zzs from qiye (a baby!) going through with the murder of what would be his zhiji and love of his life in another universe makes me incredibly sad. why do you think zzs would do that? i mean, if you have an idea how that might look like, do u wanna share? because while he was a baby back then and his life was already almost not his own anymore, zzs is a tricky guy, and he was soft and approachable enough that he might have had cause to get out of this one. but then again, he would have needed to have sufficient time getting to know wkx, busy and ensnared as he was! like, i really have no idea at all here
oh god!! hm ok ok let me try n collect my thoughts.... to b clear! i'm abt 70% of the way through tyk + have not read much of qiye at all other than what i've seen summarized in meta posts!! theres like definitely context i am probably missing fsdkfgk. but tbh i don't think theyd seriously go after each other either.. i dont think either of them would choose to or want to. i do, however, think that like. there is a certain theoretical scenario in which if zzs was still the head of tc, professionally committing atrocities including against people he DID love dearly, noted guy who is utterly shit about being emotionally literate,& something happened that caused him to think that the extremely powerful, extremely dangerous ghost valley master could be a threat? i think he might hesitate but i think he would.
#WHICH 2 BE FAIR IS LIKE. A LOT TO PUT IN TAGS OR IN A QUICK LB POST. SO. I UNDERSTAND THE CONFUSION 😭#also HI ty for yr nice tags btw. :] hope this makes sense nfskdfg i am just spitballing here tbh... 🎤the floor is yrs if u'd like#id love 2 hear other interpretations !!!#asks :)

When did Zhou Zishu fall in love?
Inspired by this post about Qian Qiu's Shen Qiao – but especially by how different Zhou Zishu's situation is, when you begin looking into it 😄
What I need to address first is that Zhou Zishu, as a character and especially as a narrator, tends to not dwell on, or even downplay, his feelings. It is partially a coping strategy, but also seems to be just a general facet of his personality. One of the joys of close-reading TYK is finding moments of unreliable narration on his part – where his actual reactions don't match up to his words and even thoughts, or where his opinions are clearly colored by preexisting bias, or where he is overreacting to things that are genuinely innocuous… so, the short answer to the question of when he fell for Wen Kexing?
Much earlier than he'd have you think.
So, let’s start with a moment – fairly late into the novel – where Zhou Zishu fully, actively, physically reciprocates Wen Kexing’s advances: the kiss in chapter 56. It is actually a third kiss Wen Kexing initiates, but the first to which Zhou Zishu responds – and from the way the previous two were presented in narration, you’d think Zishu was forced, except...
...wait. Zishu, my dude, my guy, that was your problem? That you weren’t on even ground?
Like, let’s check back with chapter 17, this is Zishu’s reaction:
[...] Zhou Zishu broke away from Wen Kexing’s grip, ruthlessly delivering a punch to the other’s abdomen, his expression cold. “The joke is not funny, Brother Wen.”
– and 40 goddamn chapters later we learn that what he was actually mad about was not being able to ‘react in time’?
And I mean, sure, it was pretty obvious he wasn’t that upset about the kissing back when it happened – considering he could’ve disappeared into the sunset and never see Wen Kexing again but instead continued to travel with him – but the way he thinks about it in 56 really makes it sound like he wanted to answer in kind… but all right, let’s not jump to conclusions that fast.
How about… the moment Zhou Zishu first verbally acknowledged his willingness to stay with Wen Kexing? Chapter 51:
Those ‘few days’, by the way, last literal months. Idk, fellas, is it gay to spend the whole winter living together with your “jianghu friend”, all while sharing a bed and raising a kid together..?
But then again, is it such a wonder that Zhou Zishu is willing to fall into that domestic routine when his first thought when an old acquaintance mentions marriage is...
(chapter 34)
And let’s not forget that his reaction to the above line was:
(chapter 33)
Too bad that Wen Kexing took that silence the wrong way and played it off as a joke, huh? Because whatever else, this wasn’t the reaction of a man about to say a definite ‘no’.
Let’s take a moment to allow this to sink in: by chapter 33, someone was already willing to consider what is essentially a marriage proposal.
Getting closer to that kiss back in chapter 17, aren’t we? The theory that Zhou Zishu’s problem was not with the kiss itself is beginning to look less implausible. Actually, there’s a moment when Zishu is reminded of it in chapter 19, and...
[Wen Kexing] specifically wiped his mouth after that, licking at the corner of his lips as if remembering something. Zhou Zishu stared at him in a daze, mindlessly holding a cup to his mouth to pretend drinking, but after a good while of no liquid flowing out, he finally noticed that the cup was actually empty.
– I think we can all agree that this is not a reaction of someone remembering an upsetting event.
(Also, if I had a dollar for every time Zhou Zishu attempted to drink from an empty cup when flustered by Wen Kexing’s actions, I’d have 2 dollars. Which isn’t a lot but it’s hilarious that it happened twice.)
And just before that, in chapter 18, we also have a moment when Wen Kexing unglues himself from Zhou Zishu’s side for a bit, and Zhou Zishu immediately both misses him –
During the past days, Zhou Zishu had to listen to [big sects’ representatives] until his ears couldn’t bear it anymore. But when he was bored out of his mind, Wen Kexing was nowhere to be seen. It was a bit quiet without the other man’s rowdiness.
– and… well... begins composing cutting remarks about Wen Kexing’s fickleness in his mind:
Internally, he thought Wen Kexing was only mindlessly chasing after him. With the lack of those courtesans with their pretty handkerchiefs, beggars couldn’t be choosers; that was obviously why the man glued himself to him to ramble his ears off.
Actually, there’s something else in this last fragment: you see, Zhou Zishu seems to have a bit of a lasting resentment about them handkerchiefs…
“[...] And regardless of all those handkerchiefs you have, stop with that motor mouth that’s full of gibberish.” (chapter 22)
What’s that about? Well, it all started back in chapter 13. Wen Kexing used a certain embroidered handkerchief to clean out Zishu’s wound, and when Zhou Zishu thought to tease him about “carrying a maiden’s belongings”...
“This is a personal gift from the famous courtesan and gentleman Su Yue from Yang Zhou City, you shouldn’t have asked if you don’t want to make an ignorant fool of yourself.”
So, this is the handkerchief Zhou Zishu will think back to with bitterness. Which... sure is a higher amount of jealousy than one would expect from a guy who literally punched that man for kissing him?
I’m sure by now we’re all on the same page: ‘that early?’ Yep, Zhou Zishu had been showing signs of liking Wen Kexing much more than he lets on that early. Then, what exactly all of that resistance was about?
Well, two reasons: first, Zhou Zishu wasn’t certain about how much Wen Kexing actually likes him (Zishu and trust is… a whole topic), and was worried about investing too much of his own sincerity into something that might not be real – which was probably compounded by the fact that, even trying to hold himself off, he still found himself liking Wen Kexing more and more (remember the reaction to proposal?). And second, of course, that he was rapidly nearing his death – it is no coincidence that he only directly asks about Wen Kexing’s sincerity after knowing he has a chance to survive.
So, yeah – it is not that Zishu takes a long time to warm up to Wen Kexing, it is rather that he is trying to protect his own heart… and Wen Kexing’s too, in a way.

oh my god my bad i did intend to elaborate on that i just lacked brain juice to write a good explanation but YES you managed to nail it anyway. thats it exactly, everyone sees the obvious human skin mask as metaphor and assumes that he takes off A mask to show his real self etc. but that doesn't cover it because he's not wearing A metaphorical mask, he has an infinite number and he swaps them in and out so easily and reflexively that probably he doesn't even know where the bottom of the stack is. opera style. and now that you mention it im sure a lot of the oversimplification that bugs me about the singular mask idea is due to shl!! it kind of IS played that way there! but it's not a one time thing at all! i see it more like the little bits of truth layered between the masks, if you pay attention long enough you start to see the patterns and collect the fragments and gain the ability to recognize more and more and the masks become more transparent.
so i just locked up what a shell game even is and omg u are a genius
IM SAYING
it's a bait and switch its a sleight of hand its that you think you saw one thing but you can't prove it because now its something else. thats the whole guy
#it was really a whole month sksgafagd sorry!!#but ur not stupid you somehow managed to yank all that right out of my brain on your own#calling it one mask and a one time thing is just an oversimplification that had bothered me when i saw it#i am not sure zzs ever really stops bullshitting about everything its more that wkx learns to see through it and zzs allows that#i think.#tyk meta

My version of the wardrobe template! yay!! I had a LOT of fun doing this and feel like I could elaborate a bit more on each of those.
It's already linked up here, but here's once again a > link to the post.< Anyway! More about these designs below!
So first, for WKX's template! - Chapter 2: Grey robes I had already made my design of those for the full TYK lineup I made a while back. I really, really like those, and took inspiration from some of the robes SHL!WKX wears in the show for the shapes. - Chapter 69: dark robes with dark red belt I expected to like that style for him, but not that much! I had seen a tutorial on how asymetrical hanfus were worn by archers in the past and that inspired me, purely on a fashion level of course. I like how intimidating he looks with those and enjoy the touches of blue in the inner layer of the robes. - Chapter 75: dark red robes The GVM robes! which I also designed a while back when researching for the illustrations of the Mt Fengya battle scenes that I wanted to make. I reworked them just a little bit and got rid of some details that I didn't like anymore. I tremendously pleated skirts for WKX so I went at it once again. I also used shifts in hues to make it look like it could have been drenched in blood. - Extra 5: deep red robes For the reminder (since apparently some people are not aware of extra 5's existance), this extra is set 5 years post-canon. I wanted WKX to wear something that looked comfortable for traveling but also practical and fashionable. The teal jacket is of course another nod at SHL since the red and teal combo was an absolute banger. Let's say I didn't want WKX to just sport an all-red look. Furthermore, the teal really works to adorn the red hues. - My personal favourite I actually don't really know whether those are my actual personal favourites, but I've come to LOVE WKX dressed in red and white thanks to @kwehxing's designs. I think it really suits him and on top of that it avoids the question "is this Hua Cheng" LMAO--okay jokes aside, I combined most of the shapes that I really like for WKX (wider shoulders, wide sleeves, and long robes with pleated inner robes) and I find him very elegant like this. Now, for ZZS! - Chapter 1: sapphire blue scholar robes Those had already been designed before as well! They're my go to generic TC!ZZS robes, haha. I was a bit extra with the blue colour here, but oh well. I'm quite obsessed with the silver brocade cynching his waist, haha. - Chapter 2: stolen farmer robes A classic as well as far as I'm concerned--of course, inspired by his hobo fit in SHL because it was quite efficient. I'm forever fond of my scruffy hobo!Xu and his toes poking from his sandals. - Chapter 18: luxurious robes from the Gao family Those were a new design! Which I had a lot of fun coming up with. Putting ZZS in a different colour scheme was also really nice. For those who don't remember, ZZS feels quite ridiculous when he sees himself in a mirror wearing those fancy robes while being so emaciated and still sporting his hobo mask. I wanted to give this "out of place" feeling; and also work on a very "wuxia" style for the robes, since this is jianghu and they were provided by Gao Chong. - Extra 5: black robes I'm incredibly fond of this design. I worked quite a bit on it, since I wasn't sure of where I wanted to go. My main guidelines were: practical and cool. I really like ZZS having a lot of room to move so ideally not too much fabric in the way, and I think he also needs arm braces to be rid of annoying sleeves. Of course, him looking much healthier and having a dynamic ponytail really works to "complete the look", and I find that he looks really cool there haha. - My personal favourite This one has been refined over the months, but it's definitely, overall, my favourite look for him in terms of shapes and construction. I like that the robes are short, I like the more fashionable jacket. I'm especially into the "pants tucked into the boots" silhouette, as well as the little ribbons keeping them tight around the ankles. I'd say that this leg shape + short robes + a bun (or sometimes a ponytail) is THE ZZS design combo for me, haha. It looks practical and fun and adventurous, just how I like it.
To conclude the whole post, I had more fun doing this than I even expected, and needless to say that I'm very excited to see other versions of them following this template. It was a good opportunity to try and project what the characters look like throughout the book, and a fun design exercise as well. I actually don't really like doing character design usually, but for characters I'm obsessed with, it's of course a much nicer experience. Anyway, thank you for reading!

Two illustrations of the "are you sincere?" scene, TYK, chapter 65.
More words below! VERY VERY LONG POST AHEAD
It's probably one of the most famous scenes of the book, considering it's the closest to an actual, outspoken declaration of feelings. Funnily enough, my first reaction to the scene was that of frustration, since WenZhou get once again interrupted, and the running gag + horniness distracted me from everything else that was going on in that scene which I now consider to be truly incredible, imo.
Those two illustrations, but mainly the second one, mainly take from one small paragraph in particular, but I will elaborate a little bit on other parts as well. First, though, a translation of the scene:
[...] Wen Kexing raised his head, looked at him. The lamp's light softening Zhou Zishu's chiselled features shone through his eyes, and Wen Kexing was lost in thoughts— He felt like he and this man had known each other for such a long time. From the moment he'd noticed his shoulderblades, felt this rush of excitement, to when he'd started liking who Zhou Zishu was, when he'd thought——so this is the Commander of Tian Chuang. Suddenly, he'd felt as if he'd met his other self. Both of them, lone wolves caught in a hunter's trap, struggling for freedom to no avail, until they had resolved to coldly gnawing off their own legs in the end. He'd felt compelled to follow him around, watched him, until he suddenly realised—if Zhou Zishu could live like this, then surely, so could he? He thought, and thought, until he fell, fell deep until he couldn't climb out anymore. Wen Kexing absent-mindedly reached out to gently caress Zhou Zishu's face, only brushing him with his fingertips. He felt a slight chill from contact of Zhou Zishu's rough skin against his own palm littered with scars and callouses. All of a sudden, he blurted: "Don't die. Should you die and leave me behind, I would be so lonely..." Zhou Zishu grasped his wrist, but didn't shake him off. He smiled: "As long as there is the slightest chance for me to live, I won't die. My life is mine, my gong-fu is mine. The Heavens granted me this fate, and taking it back from me won't be that easy." Zhou Zishu's breath brushed against Wen Kexing's fingers. He squinted, then said, seemingly deep in thoughts: "Once upon a time, an owl knocked over the bowl of red water carried by a villager..." Zhou Zishu looked at him and, his expression unchanged, he gently asked the question he'd already asked before: "Why was the villager carrying a bowl of red water?" Wen Kexing's lips slowly stretched into a smile, and he answered: "Water is colourless, but should blood trickle into it, wouldn't it turn red?" Zhou Zishu still looked at him but remained quiet. As if Wen Kexing's spirits had suddenly returned to him, his faraway gaze coming back into focus.
"Ah-Xu, you should sleep with me once," Wen Kexing said, his eyes smiling up into crescent moons. "This way, we'll have each other in our hearts; so you won't die so easily, and neither will I. How does that sound?" His tone was playful, but Zhou Zishu didn't banter back; he merely watched Wen Kexing with an odd glint in his eyes, and after a moment, he asked: "Are you sincere?" Wen Kexing chuckled, leaned forward so that his breath was brushing against Zhou Zishu's lips: "Can't you tell, if I'm sincere or not?" Zhou Zishu faintly startled, before he replied in a low voice: "I... I really can't. I haven't seen much sincerity in my life, and can hardly discern it. So, are you?" Wen Kexing's fingers climbed up along the curve of Zhou Zishu's shoulder, and he tugged his bun loose. His black, silky hair cascaded down, at once making the hardened man appear a few shades more fragile. Wen Kexing's playful smile faded, and in a soft, yet deeply grounded voice, he said: "I am." He closed his eyes, and pressed his lips to Zhou Zishu's, finally lifting the heavy turmoil from his heart. Zhou Zishu slowly reached up, a long moment passing before he rested his hand upon Wen Kexing's shoulder, gripping his robes with his fingers. [...]
Phew that was a bit long but it felt necessary! TL by me.
Obviously, the second illustration is based on this passage:
"Wen Kexing's fingers climbed up along the curve of Zhou Zishu's shoulder, and he tugged his bun loose. His black, silky hair cascaded down, at once making the hardened man appear a few shades more fragile," which I have lost my mind about too many times to count. I feel like the contrast between this and the mention of Zhou Zishu's rough skin, and his assured words above, is very cool.
About the scene itself, while I guess it's mostly self-explanatory, I feel like mentioning what particularly touches me here:
I think that Wen Kexing's impression of Zhou Zishu, his freedom, "the way he lives", is really the core of what moved Wen Kexing in the first place. It is also echoing that scene, back in Dongting, when Wen Kexing watches Zhou Zishu lazily sitting in a restaurant, feeling what could be interpreted as resentment or envy when he sees how free he looks.
Wen Kexing unconsciously halted his steps. He stared at Zhou Zishu’s relaxed silhouette for a while, with no trace of an expression in his face or eyes. His heart swelled with some strange feeling—strange, in that it was no feeling at all. He felt as though this man was mocking him with this wordless posture; he who rushed around for one thing or another, who was burdened with so many cares, yet obstinately put on a devil-may-care persona. Zhou Xu—as carefree as duckweed, he thought, with a body like willow catkins. In all the world, with its boundless perspectives, where could you find someone who walked their path alone and never allowed anything to trouble them?
(TL by Lianzi)
Wen Kexing longs for him, to be like him, to be free like him; they both came to having to hurt themselves to be free of their shackles, but Zhou Zishu kept living freely afterwards.
By evoking the red water, the past he could never tell straightforwardly, I think that Wen Kexing is expressing how this past of him has been his shackles and how now, he wishes to follow along, to follow Zhou Zishu in his freedom.
And then, Zhou Zishu's words—they almost feel like his own confession, to me. Later, by the tree as well, his words refer to life, the will to live, and not being really direct, it sounds like his way of telling Wen Kexing, "I am serious about you." Wen Kexing was the first one to hold onto his life, to want for Zishu to live, and now Zishu follows along.
His words feel so powerful, and said so straightforwardly, baring himself to Wen Kexing like that, it makes so much sense for me to expect, finally, a proper confession from him as well, considering how each and every one of Wen Kexing's declarations have so far been over the top, jokey or deflected one way or another. Of course, I also think that Zishu does feel some form of insecurity, does need reassurance, and is gambling a lot here, but I guess... he's essentially worked to bare himself and expects the same in return.
ANYWAY. I think this is a gorgeous scene. I DO think, for balance, that the ending is a bit abrupt and that they would have deserved for Priest not to undermine the emotions right away—for that does take away from it a bit and distracts (calling back, once again, to the tired running gag of "oops they're interrupted). Not that the joke shouldn't have come up, but it could have waited a bit more.
But yeah! Thanks for reading!

I mean ok there's the obvious component of shame of course, that your body isn't doing as it should, embarrassment for 'lacking vigour' or the (societal) implication of emasculation – but there's also the deeply personal frustration of being out of tune with your body. Of your own flesh denying your will.
For a control freak like zzs, who is also deeply aware of expectations and roles, that's a lot. Like yes, sometimes he revels in subverting 'proper' behaviour, and i do think it's an interesting approach to have him own this. But at the same time that nonchalance may only be skin deep – the fact of the matter would also be more meaningful than a simple sexual dysfunction. It's after all also a sign of his declining health, independence, and encroaching lack of agency.
Paired with zzs already having troubles with opening himself up to intimacy – well it's a perfect storm.
You know what! If no one wants to talk about zishu's limp dick with me i'll just have to write it myself!
#of course zzs would hide; conceal; and deny his true feelings on the matter#but it all combines into such a special brand of intimacy and trust#he's already struggling with letting wkx in and for a long while expects him to abandon zzs once he got his will#obvs this would be even more harrowing – it's one thing to be abandoned after wkx got his use out of zz#quite another to have to potentially witness the immediate withdrawal of desire and possibly even affection#for smth that is completely out if zzs's control#i'm just#hnnnggggg#tyk#tyk meta#guesd this also counts for woh as well#woh#woh meta

Either I went for the imagery of ZZS wistfully gazing upon the mysterious and eccentric WKX, which would definitely have been more aesthetic and undeniably fitting, or I went the semi-humorous route of channelling the "WKX fell for that ugly hobo and his gorgeous shoulder blades" meme-ified side of their dynamic.
Well, clearly that's where I ended up going, but I feel like explaining a bit.
For me, this picture was three-folds:
First part is the meme; it's kind of funny, kind of ridiculous, and sets the tone of what TYK starts off as; rather absurd, with its reasonable dose of dark humor, and the (at first seemingly improbable) meeting and love story between a silly dying hobo and a strange, suspicious, hedonistic gentleman. It felt thematically appropriate for TYK to twist the original image and put the obviously uglier one on the poster since TYK relies heavily on genre subversion to begin with.
Secondly, there is WKX. So, controversial opinion (/jk) but I don't think WKX was necessarily convinced or even really thought that ZZS was "a beauty" underneath his alleged mask. It was probably a mix of various feelings and teasing/provoking which lead to this joke. First, everything he expresses throughout the book and in extra 4; the fascination for this man who seemed too hide great strength and was of no known identity--who was probably more than what he seemed.
(I'm gonna push it just a little bit ((but isn't that the fun of literary interpretation)), but the "beauty under the mask" is not only physical. It could be a way to say, I think that beneath your raunchy, ridiculous attitude, beneath your gross appearance, beneath the pretense that you're a nobody, that you're a peasant, you're probably someone of great importance and great accomplishments, someone much stronger than you pretend to be--someone like me, perhaps, even. The shoulder blades references are, besides of course WKX *actually* noticing them, the observation of how ZZS moves, of how agile his body is, etc...)
Anyway-- the entire point of this intro is to say that to me, this isn't actually referring to that whole side of their dynamic (or not entirely), but rather to that passage that I am STILL OBSESSED WITH where Wen Kexing recognizes ZZS just from the way he's sitting in a restaurant, and that makes him feel things not entirely positive:
Zhou Zishu stepped into an inn alone. He chose a seat by a window, ordered a few side dishes and a jug of mulled rice wine, and drank it slowly while soaking in the sunshine. As soon as Wen Kexing walked in, he saw Zhou Zishu from behind. He didn’t know why, but he thought that this view was quite special—he could always pick it out of a crowd. Zhou Zishu did not sit with his back straight. Most of the time, he lounged indolently at an angle that looked exceptionally comfortable. Wen Kexing thought that it seemed as though nothing weighed on him; seeing him was enough to ease the heart. Yet he was not apathetic—he had his joy, his anger, his sorrow—and they came in a flash as quickly as they went. Within the blink of an eye, he had forgotten it already.
(Tian Ya Ke, chapter 18, TL by Lianzi) (have I quoted this already??? If not I should have I love this passage so much)
AND THEN QUOTING ANOTHER PASSAGE (LOL), TL by me this time:
From the moment he'd noticed his shoulderblades, felt this rush of excitement, to when he'd started liking who Zhou Zishu was, when he'd thought——so this is the Commander of Tian Chuang. Suddenly, he'd felt as if he'd met his other self. Both of them, lone wolves caught in a hunter's trap, struggling for freedom to no avail, until they had resolved to coldly gnawing off their own legs in the end. He'd felt compelled to follow him around, watched him, until he suddenly realised—if Zhou Zishu could live like this, then surely, so could he?
(Full passage in this other post LOL)
So yes, THIS. Those two things. That's it. Need I say more? HAH OF COURSE I DO I ALWAYS HAVE TO (help)
More seriously--the way WKX is captivated by ZZS' apparent carefreeness and freedom, all the different feelings (or absence thereof, as he puts it, which I interpret as so distant from what he's used to feel that it almost feels like nothing at all) is what I was going for here.... By not showing his face at all LMAO
The envy, the frustration--the impression of being mocked, but also the longing, how it inspired him to follow along and try to be free like he was.
-cough- yes, so that was point 2 out of 3.
Now lastly, about ZZS himself and my representation of him as hoboxu. I think (?) I've written enough about him that I think I can keep this succint. I love how priest often makes a point of expliciting, in the book, how he's so often smiling, and how he's always incredibly energetic in the morning, as if the night of pain had never happened. I like to think that hoboxu is both a carricature of a ridiculous character that ZZS has fun embodying---but also a liberated expression of his deeper self.
WKX feels like he's mocking him, but ZZS is also mocking himself relentlessly, when he feels like the outside resembles the inside finally, when he feels ridiculous in these new robes, when he allows himself the most outrageous behavior---and then there's mocking life itself, mocking jianghu, mocking everything that he nonetheless deeply cherishes. It's almost... gently mocking, affectionate mocking of everything because his own life has become a joke yet he's still going to enjoy it to the fullest--drinking to his heart's content, rolling in the mud and visiting touristy sites (or so he intended).
In the end... the world is still in his own hands. He chose everything, chose the way he lived, the way he (would have) died and still has the power to dissappear at will--but he stays. Stays and endures what he pretends annoys him, because he can't help himself, because he's ridiculous and is aware of it and may as well have some fun while being so.
I can't seem to ever have enough of this, of this vibe. I wanted to have him laugh at and with WKX, at and with the people seeing him, at and with himself, at and with the narrative.
SO YEAH HAH THATS HUM THAT'S IT. You know what they say, it's only a fun meme if there's an essay behind it (noone says that help 😭😭😭😭)
I hope you had fun reading it and have a nice weeked 🤪

Lord Zhou and the Ghost Valley Master Cross-posting because i'm just that wild, hah! /jk More about the art below! --and a little talk about WenZhou and their relationship to power (+ some meta).
So hum, it is no secret that I enjoy a bit of "spice" in WenZhou's dynamic and at times am very prolific on my nsfw twitter account.
Collars and leash stuff have been on and off, and I was recently enabled for more of that by friends going wild about ZZS on a leash, etc, etc. LBR: I don't think you need any reason to go feral about that kind of stuff--but seeing how I myself seemed to regress to the state of a wild horny beast while making this painting, I felt like I may need to adress it a little. Here are some of my thoughts about WenZhou & power:
WKX and ZZS are both men who are/were in a position of extreme power. Both rose to that position of extreme power, but from very different starting points and motivations.
ZZS was, from what we know from how he describes himself in TYK and from how he behaves in QY, a very smart, cocky, ambitious kid, who probably deliberately sold his services to HLY to keep rising. There were probably ideals mixed in that, but point is, ZZS desired that power, that influence, and was encouraged to reach it. Becoming a sect leader so young was probably a shock, but nothing indicates that this position wasn't wanted. ZZS also mentioned not having a physique as advantageous as ZCL's when he was a child; so he probably had to work hard to reach his goals. Point is: the power was desired and strived for.
WKX has, without a doubt, needed the power, without ever really showing any pleasure nor satisfaction in having it. Surviving in the GV =/= reaching the top; if anything, becoming the GVM put the largest target on his head--but it is likely that reaching the position of GVM was necessary for him to execute his plan (find the key, pull the right strings, obtain his revenge). WKX was a little genius who didn't want to study, and probably wasn't dreaming/aiming for power. Conclusion: the power was a necessity and a tool. Many various characterisation points/analysis/dynamics can be pulled from this, and it is quite interesting to explore how, later, their relationship to power can evolve, both re:the rest of the world and each other. For the following personal analysis, I also worked with the following points from the book:
ZZS admires WKX's strength and power
WKX seems to have multiple fantasies of control and domination
ZZS seems receptive to many of them (including the biting, the somno stuff, and the cnc suggestions)
WKX admires/envies/resents ZZS' freedom
ZZS has fun becoming a subversion of his past self (swearing, being gross, being ridiculous, being openly cocky)
WKX is a control-freak and is very patient
ZZS is a bit conservative
WKX quite the opposite
Now how does that bring me to ZZS on a leash for the GVM?
(note that this is my current conclusion, not the conclusion)
I like to think that on the one hand, ZZS is that man who sees himself as a man and enjoys a lot of things about masculinity. The power that he likes for himself, he also enjoys seeing it in someone else's hands--he likes fighting for it, but (and this is a very personal interpretation) I like to believe he gets the most thrills from being overpowered; because it shows how strong the other is, bc it subverts whom he is himself. The power he's fought to get, has had all his life, but ended up leaving him alone at the top, feels good when taken from him--or when there's someone strong enough that he isn't alone up there anymore. On the other hand, I feel like although WKX would benefit from relinquishing some control and power, he does enjoy using it in a personal, pleasurable way, rather than by necessity. While he probably likes toying with presentations, with appearances, and doesn't mind being perceived as the wife, as the more submissive one in their fake-traditional relationship play of husband and wife, having the power, holding the leash---simply out of pleasure and mutual satisfaction is, I think very cathartic and arousing for him.
But then, why precanon? For the aesthetic bc I'm a simp for TC!era ZZS. And because showing him so strong, so powerful, yet leashed, is kind of a reminder that... It's not about real power. It's not about who, between them, is the strongest, the most powerful, the winner or whatever. It adds that thrill, the aknowledgement that this is out of freewill and choice and pleasure, I guess.
On top of that, man, I'm sorry, but peak TC!ZZS right post-QY canon after he's become the most powerful man in the country but is completely jaded by what happened in the end? On a leash? For a man he respects?? ugh
Anyway TLDR; I think it's hot and all of that gibberish barely has anything to do with my actual motivations to draw this.

-你身上有光 dyptich-
BACK AGAIN with more "Light on you" stuff! I really can't let go of this passage, haha. And I have A LOT MORE TO SAY so Let's go! (LONG post ahead)
This post will contain:
my own attachment and what I love in this scene
what lead me to depict them like this
a personal translation of the passage in the book
But to begin with, a little something about storytelling. In order to help writers, some "storytelling rules" have been set up and theorised about. Those rules are, of course, meant to be broken, and one does not need to follow them in order to write a good story; but during the storytelling course I followed, a few of those rules have stuck with me, especially this one:
The main character, the hero of the story, will be the one to shine or to "save the day" in the end.
Again--does this rule need to be respected for a good story? Not necessarily, but when struggling with how to manage an ending or a main character, it can be helpful.
Anyway. For me, this scene, the "there's light on you" scene, kind of is that scene--that one scene where ZZS is the main character, is the hero. TYK has an interesting story structure, where if you go by the book of typical wuxia stories, ZCL would be the main character; and if you look at whom goes through the biggest internal journey throughout the story, it would be WKX. ZZS's own story technically spans across both QY and TYK, which makes TYK a bit more about WKX's journey than ZZS'.
But that very scene is not only ZZS saving WKX, but also ZZS reaching the conclusion of his own journey. By the end of QY, ZZS didn't go and meet with Jiuxiao. He deliberately looked the other way, too scared to go check on him, too superstitious; and in the end, Jiuxiao died. TYK puts ZZS in a similar position: someone he loves is away, and the choice to go reach them is in his hands. He decided to respect WKX's wish to go and fight his own battle alone, yet he ultimately went against it, changed and moved on from who he was in QY, to go and fight by WKX's side.
It's no surprise that I'm very into ZZS, and this image of him bathed in light, beating the scorpion to his own game and "taking back" this main character spot... It makes me go insane. Not to mention all the incredible quotes of this passage. "His person"? "There's light on you"? Come on!! I'm also. Obsessed with how and what WKX saw. What he must have felt, as he was ready to die, when he saw his person, his husband, dashingly get rid of all the enemies, almost at the peak of his power, come and "collect his corpse"--save him? Just!! Imagine!!! Imagine being WKX and this is how it ends!!! You're the GVM, you've had the life you've had, you finally meet someone that you truly love, the guy's about to die, then maybe not, AND THEN HE COMES TO SAVE YOUR LIFE AGHHHH 😭😭😭 Sorry, I REALLY like this. REALLY.
-------
cough--So, about their expressions and what I wanted to represent. For ZZS, to me... it was a mix of closure, fondness, and satisfaction. I think that ZZS had a "good time", going back to who he was before: tailing the scorpions, going undercover, ambushing from the shadows--not to mention slowly retrieving his full power. I think that this ZZS feels quite good, especially now that he got the confirmation that WKX is still alive. Then, the feeling of having done "the right thing". He's... beyond regret, now. He was able to follow his heart, quite literally, and that also feels good. The fondness is of course because he's looking at WKX. What else is he supposed to feel?? They haven't met for 3 months! I think that he's worried, but they trust each other. He trusts that WKX will survive this, that he'll be strong, that he won't die on him. So yeah. I wanted this ZZS confident--in himself, in WKX, in the future. WKX is a bit dazed, there. Probably in pain, and a bit stunned as he wasn't expecting it. But he's also... a bit enthralled; by this light, by how impressive and efficient his husband is, and, of course, the fact that ZZS came for him. The person he loves, the person whose life matters more than everything else now that WKX has reached his goal, came for him, came to save him. This stupid guy came for him instead of going to the mountain to prepare on his own. Yet another blatant show of them being so alike, isn't it? I guess... it's just a lot of love, a bit of pride, the faintest hint of him being amused, even--and maybe relief, as well. He won't die, and ZZS is there, and he's strong, and again, like for ZZS, there's a future--which he never allowed himself to properly consider, I believe. -------- Finally, a personal retranslation of that scene. I did it not because I thought it really needed it but because the only existing TL of this part of the book doesn't allow for reposting and I figured I may as well try. So for anyone who doesn't remember the passage or hasn't read the book/reached this chapter, here it is!
The Scorpion raised his hand and was immediately handed a weapon. His smile vanished as he looked at Wen Kexing leaning against the tree, already quite injured. He said: “For someone like the Ghost Lord, I must act in person—it would be quite disrespectful to get someone else to do the job.”
As he spoke, he raised his hook across his chest and approached slowly. He continued in a low voice: “I invite the Ghost Lord to walk ahead on the Yellow Spring road.”
He then fell silent, raising the hook higher and higher. Wen Kexing opened his eyes, quietly looking at him, his pitch-black irises like two dark pools of murky water, calm as if he wasn’t the one about to die.
The Scorpion suddenly felt a violent gush of wind surging from the side, charged with killing intent—electrified by an aura of death, goosebumps rising on his skin, he shouted as he lifted his hook in the air and promptly sliced through—the assailant was wearing the black robes of the scorpions, but didn’t wear a mask, had a soft blade in hand—he swiftly avoided the hook; a sudden, sharp pain made the Scorpion cry out as the soft blade wrapped around his arm which, at once, was ripped from his body and fell to the ground.
The several scorpions standing behind their leader immediately assumed a tactical formation—but then, a dashing figure, a metallic chime, and they all stood, dazzled; one swift move for it to be settled: one man standing, several men on the ground. Whether they were dead or alive, all of those who layed still were missing the arm holding their weapon.
Wen Kexing recognised the man. He abruptly sighed, and said in a low voice: “Idiot, what are you doing here?”
Zhou Zishu threw him a side glance and sneered: “I came to collect your corpse, madman.”
The effects of the Nails of seven apertures and three autumns were suppressed by the medicine Da Wu had given Zhou Zishu, and at that moment his gong fu had been restored to nine parts of its peak capacity. If the Scorpion already wasn’t on par should they have a fair fight, then he didn’t stand a chance when ambushed from the shadows.
Zhou Zishu turned to the Scorpion, the pointed end of Baiyi slightly angled down, and he sharply asked: “You dare threaten my person?”
A bit stunned, Wen Kexing watched the back of the man standing in front of him, and slight shivers started coursing through his fingers resting on the ground.
The Scorpion’s face was deathly pale, yet he still managed to smile and painfully say: “Ah… Brother Zhou, my apologies, I didn’t expect you to honour us with your presence.”
He briefly gauged the two men, waving his remaining hand: “Great master, we won’t counter any further. We bid you farewell———retreat!”
The few scorpions that were still alive crawled and scrambled to their feet and hurriedly followed the Scorpion as he withdrew. Zhou Zishu didn’t try to follow and just turned around to face and look at Wen Kexing.
Wen Kexing’s eyes shone brightly, but he simply chuckled: “You should be more careful for…”
Before he could finish, Zhou Zishu’s eyes focused, he swiftly twirled, the blade that was in his hand suddenly split through the air in a beautiful arch—a tinkling sound as it hit something, and soon enough a muffled groan rose from the woods behind them. Zhou Zishu shook his head and sighed: “Using the same move against the same person twice—are all these scorpions merely one trick ponies? And they dare claim to be on par with Siji manor?”
Wen Kexing watched him, slightly dazed. His mouth curved into a smile as he suddenly extended his hand in the air, trying to catch something.
Zhou Zishu frowned and asked: “What are you doing?”
Wen Kexing said softly: “There’s light… on your body. I’m catching it to see…”
Thanks for reading!

And yet.... another..... Face reveal illustration.
And of course, another long post, LOL.
More thoughts on the passage below!
This illustration is born from a hyperfocus of mine on this sentence:
Ah-Xu... [...] Did... did I tell you that I like men?"
他忽然发现,其实对方一辈子都不将那易容卸下来,在自己心里,也从来就应该是这样一副模样,如今看到他长得竟如自己想象中的感觉别无二致,就像是……已经认识了他很久很久一样。 [Wen Kexing] suddenly realized that, should [Zhou Zishu] have kept the mask on forever, this was the face he'd have pictured in his heart. Now, seeing this face that exactly matched the one he had pictured, it simply felt like.... meeting again with someone he'd known for a very, very long time.
This, to me, feels like the comforting familiarity of knowing, of understanding a friend, feeling at ease despite the years, the distance; the feeling of meeting a friend IRL for the first time despite knowing them for years, and yet everything clicks--
To me, the beauty in this passage is in how the mask... never really did anything, change anything. Wen Kexing became friends with the person behind the mask, felt this deep connection for this man regardless of what he could look like, and seeing him, now, his face revealed, is that comfort of, yes--I recognize you. It's you.
What I really enjoy in TYK is Wenzhou's companionship, the way they understand each other so profoundly, and their friendship. The fact that they liked each other as people first, that they connected so well despite the odds. This connection between them makes a lot of the feelings mutual, and I feel like this sentence above, part of it is felt by Zhou Zishu as well; and removing his mask, although it is for practical reasons within the context of the story, showing his face to Wen Kexing is a way to affirm trust, both ways. I trust you with my own face, but you can also trust me--because I show you, I welcome you in. This passage... almost feels like a greeting. "Hello again, friend." except they've been tagging along for a while, now.
I used to wonder if Zhou Zishu was nervous about Wen Kexing seeing his face, as I do think he's a bit self-conscious about his frail body and struggles to understand Wen Kexing's big declaration of attraction to him--sort of like, "will he still like me, what will he think of my face?". I don't really stand by that anymore, because my understanding of ZZS has changed since then. It really feels more like, it's fine, we know each other, we're friends anyway now whether I like it or not. I wonder, is he a bit happy that he gets to greet WKX with his real face? He mentions having counted on keeping his mask until he dies, but... ? It's pretty obvious that at this point in the story, ZZS is already deeply fond of WKX, so I can't help but feel like he is happy, deep down, that he gets to make that connection.
For WKX, it must be comforting, but also quite bittersweet. His appreciation, his growing love for ZZS, only comforted by this familiarity, this acknowledgement of companionship, of ease together, while he is so deeply aware that ZZS is condemned... I feel like at this moment, he must want to hug him, to keep him close, and think, I wish I could have him longer, I wish he could stay; for he's the only friend he's ever had, for he never connected with someone like that before.
Now to adress the elephant in the room and jump onto the next topic, I keep saying "friend", "companion". Needless to say that I am well aware that wenzhou have a romantic+ bond, but I just feel like this part highlights this aspect of their relationship that I profoundly cherish. And thus we reach WKX's very famous line:
It's hilarious, perfectly timed, but I especially love how I feel like, rather than highlighting how gorgeous or attractive ZZS could be, this is yet another way for WKX to lighten his own mood, to detach himself from the deeper feelings, the longing, the fondess, the comfort--given how untimely this all is. It hurts, to feel attached to ZZS as a person, because he's going to die soon, while joking about fucking and being gay always works, and it has the benefit to make ZZS flustered.
So yeah, point is, I'm obsessed with that scene.
Also, obligatory reference to the past versions, which I noticed make sort of a nice movement? haha.
I'm not really standing by the first one anymore, but it works in that context!

Chapter 24, Mo Huaikong spots Wen Kexing and senses that something's up witht that one.
Zhao Jing was nearly out of his mind with worry when the two of them brought Zhang Chengling back. He pulled at Zhang Chengling to ask this or that. This Zhao Jing was a sly codger, Wen Kexing observed, yet he was not indifferent to his old friend’s son. So Wen Kexing turned to make his silent exit—but just as he did so, he felt someone’s stare lock onto him. Wen Kexing halted. When he turned his head, he met a foreboding gaze—ominous, with the air of a mad dog that wanted to pounce on him. Wen Kexing saw Cao Weining speaking to his observer with every courtesy. This, he guessed, was his shishu—the old pricky good-for-nothing from the Qingfeng Sword sect who had made a name for himself. Mo Huaikong. Mo Huaikong listened to Cao Weining—who was chattering his ear off—and, following Cao Weining’s pointing finger, looked in Wen Kexing’s direction. He first felt that this person looked a bit familiar. Then those fathomless eyes made him apprehensive. Yet try as he might, he could not remember. He was stunned. Just at that moment, he saw Wen Kexing’s mouth turn up at the corners to smile at him. He heard Cao Weining lament the profound love between this and another man, and he couldn’t hold back a snort. This Wen fellow, he thought, was bad news from head to toe.
(TL by Lianzi)
I wanted to make it a bit absurd; MHK thinking that "he's bad news" and then he looks like THIS - you don't say!! Earlier today, as I was imagining some scenes of TYK, I started focusing on WKX's mannerisms and how he's acting with ZZS and other people, the differences, and how he's perceived. I feel like book!WKX is hinted at being extremely weird and having this disagreeable, menacing aura, and showing that through these striking glimpses into how many would perceive him is quite fun.
I initially made another version, where he's not smiling, but then reread and realised that the corners of his mouth *do* rise up. I think the scene would have absolutely worked with a very lowkey, smooth looking WKX too, but making it over-the-top was just too funny, and I like to think that WKX does look that threatening a lot of the time. The combo between OBVIOUSLY BAD WKX and ZZS' ridiculous hobo persona is very tasty, imo.
The other version:

Wen Kexing and the most famous male Flower Queen of Jianghu, Su Yue!
And the handkerchief that triggered Zhou Zishu's first little jealousy crisis in TYK hehe. More info and the quote below!
Zhou Zishu knew deep down that he was right, but he still glanced at Wen Kexing’s handkerchief with disdain. It emanated some delicate fragrance, like cosmetics, with a cluster of orchids embroidered in the corner; small, yet exceedingly refined. Too large to belong to a young woman, and the design was too plain by far, yet if it belonged to a man… what kind of grown man would carry around something like this? He couldn’t resist shooting Wen Kexing a strange look. There was nobody else present, so Zhou Zishu teased him back directly: “I say, why do you have a young lady’s token? Could it be that you’ve got an embarrassing secret?” Wen Kexing had been carefully wiping away the coagulated blood and ragged clothing threads, but when he heard these words, he pressed harder and—expressionlessly—tore off the sleeve piece that had been stuck to Zhou Zishu’s wound. Zhou Zishu hissed; his features contorted. Calm, as though nothing had happened, Wen Kexing replied: “This was a personal gift from Su Yue-gongzi, the reigning blossom of Yangzhou. You’d look less ignorant if you said a little less.” He straightaway ripped Su Yue-gongzi’s personal gift into strips and used them to bind Zhou Zishu’s wound. Zhou Zishu didn’t know that Jiangnan had such liberal ways. Even in the capital of yore, thirty miles from the Full Moon River and ruled by the old libertine emperor at the height of his extravagance, nobody ever heard of a man being celebrated as a famous courtesan. Thus Zhou Zishu had spoken without thinking.
Chapter 13, translation by Lianzi. I really wanted to represent WKX enjoying some good time before the start of TYK, and not only through NSFW art (which I've done once or twice before). My desire here was to convey a peaceful atmosphere of WKX enjoying what he likes the most, good food, a beautiful man and the atmosphere of brothels. I have personal headcanons regarding his sexuality and relationship to brothels, and do feel like it's a calming, safe space for him. I'm especially happy with the color scheme, even though it's absolutely not what I initially planned to go with, and am glad with how the embroideries came out!
