How did you come up with your human Bill design?

I described my goal in the first post I made about his design:

After seeing dozens of tall dapper skinny white twinky anime boy Bills, I wanted a design that matches none of those words. My other two goals were to use the show’s art style; and to lightly pay homage to Alex Hirsch’s “canon” human Bill with the triangle body… except not deliberately hideous.

My unspoken final goal was "and I'm gonna make him damn good looking."

All the colors were sampled from Bill & Bipper, except his skin (which I sampled off a background character and tweaked until it looked good with the yellows) and his gold tooth (which I sampled off of Ergman Bratsman's).

On top of the fact that I was tired of specifically white dude Bills, brown skin tone was chosen because of the emphasis on Bill's interactions with ancient Egypt; I wasn't sure at the time how much of an influence I was gonna headcanon he had on the region, and it woulda felt weird depicting Egyptians bowing down to a white dude. (And then I decided to deemphasize his influence on Egypt almost completely lol.) It woulda been more accurate to go darker, but I was worried it would start to tilt his design into Nyarlathotep-esque Creepy Pitch-Skinned Mysterious Demonic Threat From The Orient racist territory, especially when he's already got demon eyes.

The triangular torso is the most important part of his design, I usually draw an equilateral triangle in the sketch layer and then pad it out.

If I were a better artist a year ago, I would have given him a double chin so his head+torso together would be triangular. But when I tried, I couldn't figure out a way to draw it that looked appealing instead of like a mean fat joke. So I took the coward's way out and gave him a skinny neck with a vaguely triangular chin, and now write him complaining about having a neck every few chapters.

I think the skinny neck, thinner face, noodle limbs, and typical baggy hoodie fooled people into assuming he's skinny. I figured out a way to draw a rounder face with less neck that looks more appealing to me than the original face, so I do that now. Can't do anything about the noodle limbs tho, those were chosen to match Bill's canon noodle limbs.

I went for a hoodie instead of the typical suits you see on human Bills for two reasons.

One: several years ago I had an OC I'd conceived of as a dumb kid who'd given Bill permanent standing permission to use her as a puppet, and when letting Bill take over she'd hide her human features by wearing a hooded poncho and tying a blindfold with an eye on it over the hood, and that idea stuck with me.

And two: for the story I came up with this design for, the premise is that Bill's been recently unhappily stuffed in a human body and dumped on his enemies' doorstep. So, he doesn't have the freedom or money to get fancier clothes; he's too depressed over being stuck in a human body to care much about his human appearance; and he's most comfortable in something that obscures his human anatomy and reminds him of his real form. If he was rich, free, and able to ditch the body any time he wanted, he'd be wearing suits.

A lot of text ahead, you have been warned

When it comes to pet names PV either calls Smilk by his name or uses gentle names like 'sweetheart' or 'bluebird' (due to his love for those birds too), while Smilk prefers to just use nicknames like 'Nilly', 'Vanilly', 'Nilla', etc because they feel more..personal and original I guess?

PV has much more relationship experience while Smilk has.. none, since before the corruption he was focused on his duty as the Fount of Knowledge and didn't have an opportunity to connect with someone and after that he was stuck in a tree for all those years and PV had a few crushes or relationships before;

PV is taller than SMilk (not by a lot, but enough to notice) so Smilk prefers to float and hide that embarrassing fact. PV definitely knows but doesn't call him out on it;

At first Smilk saw PV's compassion as weakness and naivety but gradually post-redemption changed his point of view and he started to see it as a strength because no matter what PV stood by his ideals no matter how much he got hurt. It's hard not to resent someone to hurt you and find the strength to understand and forgive;

Despite being incredibly smart and wise Smilk's knowledge on some things is a bit outdated. Pure Vanilla tries his best to help and update him on some information even if he struggles sometimes as well (they're both old af, they will never catch up to the modern slang I fear);

PV always has warm hands and Smilk's are always cold. When they cuddle it's a perfect balance;

Smilk is very clingy and needy though he'd never admit that out loud but PV understands what he needs without words and makes sure to spend a lot of time together even if it's something tiny. He makes sure to keep his promise and don't leave SMilk on his own for a long time;

They occasionally read together, though it's more of Smilk reading out loud and PV listening to his voice. It reminds Smilk of the days he used to do lectures but in Pure Vanilla's company it's comforting, he lets his old 'scholar' persona slip;

PV tends to overwork himself/hide his issues and Smilk frequently calls him out on that and makes sure he eats and sleeps while denying that he cares about him;

Smilk struggles with emotions and showing affection and sometimes doesn't fully realize that what he's doing is wrong and toxic due to isolation and his shaky mental state. The best example of that is with his treatment of Truthless Recluse I guess;

Some people like to headcanon Damian as looking more like Bruce, some more like Talia, I like a middle ground, I headcanon Damian as a mix of both

I like to think he has dark/tan skin and green eyes with some hazel specks that come from Talia, his eyes's shape also from her, his nose can come either from her or from Bruce (so it's either straight or aquiline), his mouth is from Bruce (not too thin, not too thick), his face shape is from Bruce, his hair color can come from either of them, so it's either black or dark brown. His face proportions are from Bruce. He's one of the tallest from the batfam, around the same height as Bruce and Jason. His body proportions can come from either side, bc both Bruce and Ras are tall, muscular and large. And he would look good with a stubble, and somehow, having a stubble would make him look more like Bruce, but also more Arab.

He also has a suave deep voice, soft spoken, with a nice accent, a mix of Arab, British and American accent.

It's canon he doesn't like to wear suits (like gala suits, not superhero suits) because he prefers freedom and comfort. He's not American, so I headcanon you will rarely see him in his sweats on the streets. I like myself a man who cares about his appearance. So I headcanon his wardrobe it's full of clothes so simple that he can choose whatever he wants and still be comfortable, elegant, and put together. Damian is very edgy, so I give him rings, necklaces, even some earrings, some chains for streets style, all in gold. He wears mostly dark colors. Dark/cold winter pallete. Lots of black, dark green, dark blue, maroon, dark grey, and some white. His style is a mix from dark academia, edgy and e-boy, but never too much of either of them. At home, he's comfortable in pjs and athleisure.

Also the hair style I like to imagine him the most is short and buzzed on the sides and long at the top, it's hard to explain, but my favorite Damian's outfit and hair is exactly like this fanart:

Chronic pain. The obvious, phantom pains in his leg of course, but fun fact! When he comes home/gets back to the edge after a long day of traumatic or ridiculous events, first thing he does is take Toothless' saddle and prosthetic tail fin off, then he tries to crash in his bed, but either Toothless doesn't let him sleep until he's taken his prosthesis off (I hate that he sleeps with it on in canon looking at it makes my body hurt imaging how uncomfortable that'd be), or Astrid comes in to make sure he does (and also to make sure he eats bc he forgets to wayyy too often).

I hope not all of these came off as super angsty, they aren't meant to completely. Like sure it sucks but he's allowed to not be miserable constantly (disabled people are allowed to not be miserable constantly, it doesn't make our pain any less valid. We're allowed to be happy).

I just love when characters are permanently, physically, changed by their story. Tbh if it weren't for rampant ableism, I think a lot of characters in action/adventure stories would be disabled, but people aren't ready for that discussion yet. finally gonna make a ref sheet for this man!! repurposing an old sketch cuz I still generally agree with the design…I actually intended to render that old sketch but never did 😭

now here’s some never-before-revealed lore and headcanons!! (this all takes place in a story I’ve never created except in my head 💀 also some have been told, I’m just reiterating them):

-This is how LJ generally looks between the years 1817 to 1886. He was “born” in 1803, stayed with Isaac for one year, got stuck in the box for 13 years, and only started wearing bandages in 1817 once he became a target to the public. As he started getting more wounds, he found out that they would open up easily and opted to wear bandages most of the time.

-He can’t eat as he lacks a digestive system. Instead, he feeds on human interaction. The more positive the interaction, the better it is for him. Because he had such a poor relationship with humans during these years, he ends up looking starved. He’s quite weak in this state, and the only thing keeping him alive is his wit and his sharp nails for weapons.

-His limbs are black right above the connection of his joints (knees and elbows). The rest of his skin is white.

-His hair would be naturally curly, but due to improper care and the long length dragging it down, it ends up looking wavy and sometimes even straight, albeit very frizzy and/or greasy.

-In 1886, that’s when LJ and Lillian first meet (omg OC and canon??? gross 😰🤢). They create a pact, and he starts getting more positive interaction with humans. As he gets more “sustenance,” his wounds start to heal properly and he gets stronger. Unfortunately, most of his wounds have scarred over at this point and they remain on his body as it’s now recognized as “healthy” tissue. (Placement of scars will be in another post)

-Lillian is 23 when she first meets LJ.

-Before his strength improved, Lillian could actually beat LJ in an arm wrestling contest!! But after about a few months of being together, that was no longer the case. (Lillian’s ego was a little hurt, but it was inevitable 😞)

-Although it looks like it, he never actually felt starved. He doesn’t experience typical feelings like hunger or fulfillment.

-Sadly, he’ll never retain his curl pattern. Lillian tries very hard to get it back as she has her own experience with her hair, but she can never get more than a few curls on his head. She gives up at some point and just accepts his wavy/straight hair as is. LJ truly doesn’t care either way. If he had his way, he’d probably forget and never wash it again.

-the dickless look is on purpose!!! No reproductive system means no dick!! Yippee, no nsfw 🤗 Unless I feel freaky, which will most definitely happen…so if you ever see him with a dick, it’s just for my own nefarious purposes 😞

-When Lillian first found out how old LJ was, she said “wow, you could be my grandpa….” LJ didn’t take too kindly to that and scolded her like a grandpa.

-His body stopped aging once Isaac died. In this version, Isaac dies at the age of 21. LJ is physically around 5 years older than Isaac, so his physical age is stuck at around 26 (but it’s not rlly trustworthy as his body isn’t comparable to a typical human’s…I’d say it’s probably between 25-35 though)

if it weren’t for canon depictions i’d probably have the scar cover half of his body,, but i like keeping designs close to canon depictions so a big shoulder scar it is! i had it cover more of his back since he turns when being fished down to try and shield himself

as for the face scar! i’ve debated for a long time whether to have that as the origin bc i thought it was too cruel but it stayed in the end- it’s probably the hardest one he’s had to overcome despite it being the smallest major scar. every time he looks in the mirror he’s reminded of how he failed reuben. how can it be that he only gets a small scrape while his best friend loses his life? all because of jesse’s mistakes?
