hi, i really hope i don't come across as offensive or anything, but i wanted to ask you about being trans, if you're ok with it. 🙏

i am trying to build a fictional world for an oc who would have trans friends, but, since i'm not trans myself, I wanted to know: would it be better if, in my fictional world, trans people didn't exist because they would already be born in a body their soul feels comfortable with?

then they wouldn't have to face any kinds of hardships related to struggling with their identity? would this be bad because it would seem that i am trying to erase trans people from my universe? or should i just leave things as they are irl, but try and make more laws that actually work, make taking hormones, doing surgeries and all things like that free and safe, also make it so people are more respectful and use the right pronouns, etc. instead??

i'm genuinely asking, so if you could help me giving your opinion, i'd appreciate it! 😄

i just wanna throw a little disclaimer on this: I'm not the final authority on all trans issues and can only talk about my personal experiences and opinions

this is kind of a loaded question. obviously, in the world we live in, being trans is a minority at best and in some places it is straight-up illegal. it depends on what kind of world building you're doing. i think its fair to do some more research into trans stories and politics surrounding it around the world and take some inspiration from more (or even less) accepting countries to base your mythical world's policies on. personally, I think the "trans people don't exist because they have a body they like from the get go" doesn't really work in practice and it's always fun to figure out how to work important things like trans identities into fiction writing.

please don't focus on the medical aspects of transitioning when you're trying to figure out how your trans characters are going to exist. there are trans people out there that never medically transition. there are some that go for multiple surgeries and therapies to get their body to look the way they want it to. there are other people that only socially transition and simply ask people to use their name and pronouns. some people are comfortable with their born name and pronouns, they just like to play with the idea of gender identity in general.

for example, you could have a character that is never specified to be amab or afab (unless you want to I guess) but uses strictly they/them pronouns. you can play with levels of androgyny, femininity, and masculinity for how you want that character to look, but it still doesn't change their pronouns and gender identity. you could have another character that uses any pronouns and has a beard and long hair and dabbles in makeup. you could have a trans woman who prefers to keep short hair because she is a warrior and the long hair gets in her way (personal opinions obviously). being trans is such a spectrum there's no one 'right way' to do it but personally, I think medical transitioning is the least of your concerns when writing a trans character. personally, some of my characters, I have figured out exactly what their transition goals are and what they would do to reach them, but others simply exist in the universe somewhere and I don't really care to think about it because they're more than their transition.

i can give more examples should you want them, especially with my own characters that I've written. there isn't a wrong way to do it as long as you're being respectful. my dms and inbox are always open

Jack is a southern gentleman whose mama taught him to respect women. He feels bad for the female ex-pop particularly the large grunts. If he can he avoids trying to hurt them but doesn’t think twice about hitting the male ex pops.

He’s not particularly fond of the NightHunter. That guy makes him think of the war and how he was a prisoner at one point.

As for the primes..

Jack and Coyle hate each other. They knew each other briefly during the war. Jack will abandon the trial mission just so he can go fight with Coyle.

Franco and Jack just try to avoid each other. Jack is much too big for Franco to take on but… marone.. those big old pecs are somethin to look at. Jack just doesn’t like the way Franco looks at him.

Poor Jack has to actively run and hide from Phylis. She’s designated him as her husband and she wants to have Jack’s babies. Jack really not too keen on that idea so he just avoids her. He’s usually very polite to her until she starts trying to grab him.

Jack doesn’t trust Easterman. He frequently questions the “therapy” he’s receiving and actively tries to get other reagents to question it. I like to think Jack is the one putting up the propaganda posters xD Easterman is frequently frustrated by Jack. The ex airman refuses to take the trials seriously and keeps fighting the expops and primes. It also pisses him off that jack tries to rally other reagents to be disobedient.
