"Deku," Katsuki hisses. "I swear on your mother." Behind him, Izuku squeaks. "If the next words out of your mouth are any combination of 'paddle' or 'please' or fucking 'Kacchan,' again." Katsuki looks over his shoulder, pinning Izuku with a glare. "I'll dump you out of this kayak— Right. Now. And you can swim back to the car."

Izuku is blessedly quiet for a long moment. Katsuki turns back to the front of this tandem kayak, arms admittedly shaking from exhaustion, and gets to rowing again.

It's not Katsuki's fault that he lost his paddles, it was a freak accident, a force of nature beyond his control.

(He was trying to use the paddle to poke a turtle when he dropped it. They got swept away by a passing motor boat. Fuckers.)

Besides, he made Izuku give his paddles over! He was fixing the problem. He was being a great boyfriend, taking Izuku out on the lake, and not making him row them back home, because Katsuki's oars got washed away in, he repeats, a freak accident force of nature.

Of course, Izuku is not quiet for long enough. Because he lives to piss Katsuki off.

"KATSUKI!" He shouts. His voice echoes over the water, grabbing the attention of a couple of campers on the shore. "GIVE BACK THE POLE WITH THE THINGS ON THE END, RIGHT NOW! I'M NOT ASKING NICELY!"

The kayak rocks dangerously when Katsuki whips around, twisting at the waist. "What the fuck did you just say to me?!"

"I said—" And, oh no, Izuku has that face, all determined and bright eyed and stubborn. "GIVE ME THE FUCKING PADDLES!"

And then he swipes his arm down, into the water—

And splashes Katsuki. Right in the face.

When Katsuki manages to blink the water out of his eyes, Izuku is gaping in horror at him. It'd be really cute, if Katsuki weren't so pissed.

"You're dead," he whispers. Izuku swallows audibly. And Katsuki lunges.

Which upsets Dion even more so that fear that doesn't need to be fear anymore, but still needs to be let out somehow, turns into anger. Anger Dion doesn't know how to deal with because he's only 16, was raised in a family with sooo many maladaptive coping strategies to function, and probably doesn't have great age appropriate socialization skills because they moved too often to really make friends. He loves Raz. But he was scared. And he needs help with *that* before he can have an honest one on one with Raz that doesn't dissolve into fighting

I'd fix you up a kennel if I could, nice big dog bed inside with blankets and other soft things. Small lights that changed to any color weaved between the bars. Could even have a couple of small bins on top to store any collars, ears, tails, and any other accessories so you always have some to choose from. I'd always make sure the blankets were warm when you got home if it was cold or the fan and ac were running if it's hot. Even bringing you something to drink and something to nibble on as you decompressed after a long day.

"I am not being a baby!" Mike yelps, for what is maybe the fourth time, and in his indignation he sucks in a mouthful of spores. He coughs, and Will pauses to lift an eyebrow in concern as Mike doubles over.

He purses his lips, looking unsure of whether to reach for him or not, and Mike shoots him a scowl as he straightens back up. "'Wow, Mike, are you okay?'" he mimics, in a piss-poor imitation of Will's voice, and is pleased to see that Will's mouth twitches upward. It's been harder to make Will smile, lately, though Mike supposes that's a natural response to the apocalypse, but- still. It feels like a small victory, when one of Mike's dumb jokes can still make Will's mouth tick up in amusement.

"You're fine," Will says dismissively, and then, with another twitch of the eyebrows, "You baby."

Mike gasps in mock offense, clapping a hand to his chest, and Will huffs out a breath that could, under the right circumstances, be considered a laugh. Mike's heart doubles in size. "I'm sorry," he says, as he steps over a root and continues marching through the forest, Will hurrying to catch up with him, "But neither of us has a driver's license, so-"

"So what," Will argues, which is the same thing he'd said when this conversation started twenty minutes ago, and it's equal parts endearing and infuriating. "It's the apocalypse, Mike, walking three miles alone is way more risky than driving down an empty road at twenty miles an hour."

"Neither of us know how, though," Mike points out, scowling, "And I'm still traumatized from the last time I was in a car with an underage driver behind the wheel, so."

Will frowns, just a little, and even though Mike didn't say Max's name aloud, he can tell they're both thinking about it when Will replies, "Yeah, well. I actually do know how to drive."

His voice is too quiet, now, none of the mostly-fake edge from earlier, and Mike mentally curses himself out for inadvertently bringing up such a depressing topic. "Yeah?" he asks, as lightly as he can muster as he bumps his arm against Will's, and is entirely too relieved when Will presses back. "Since when?"

"Jonathan taught me," Will says, mouth twisted in a wry little grin, "Last fall. Right after we moved to Lenora, because he thought it would get me-"

Will's voice cuts off sharply, and Mike glances over with a question on his lips, only to find Will staring down at his leg. Mike follows his gaze, and his eyes widen in horror when he sees a thick black vine slowly winding itself around Will's ankle.

Their eyes meet in horror, and Will has exactly enough time to utter a panicked "Mike-" before he's gone, yanked to the ground in one fluid motion.

Mike utters a noise halfway between a scream and a sob, and he's off after Will before he's even thinking about it, knees scraping the ground as he frantically crawls after Will, reaching for his wrists.

His fingers touch his palms, then scrape over his forearms, until Will's fingertips fly out and catch the sleeve of Mike's sweater, and Mike grabs his upper arm and holds on as tight as he possibly can.

"Mike," Will says again, like he's not even thinking about it, and Mike pulls him to his chest, watching Will frantically kick at the vine. "It's- got me, hang on-" he hisses against Mike's shoulder, as the vine wrestles at his leg, hard enough that Mike can feel Will straining to keep hold of him.

"Okay, shit, okay-" Mike says desperately, reaching desperately for the bat shoved haphazardly into his backpack, Will's fingers digging painfully into his arms, "You- hold your leg still, okay, I don't want to hurt you-"

"I don't care, Mike, just get rid of it," Will says, thrashing his leg again as he tucks his face away against Mike's shoulder, whimpering. He's scared, Mike realizes, because of course he is, but the realization strikes some deep, protective instinct in Mike. He presses one hand against Will's back as firmly as he can manage as, before he can think too hard about it, he brings the bat down hard on the vine just off to the side of Will's leg.

The vine shakes a little, and Will's fingers dig harder into his skin. "Again," he commands, but it sounds small and afraid as he speaks into Mike's collarbone, "It's- it loosened, so-"

"Yeah, okay," Mike says, lips brushing over the top of Will's head as he leans forward to bring the bat down again, harder this time. The vine loosens further, and Will kicks again, shaking it almost all the way off. Mike brings the bat down again, pulling Will closer at the same time, and Will shakes his leg free, instantly recoiling into Mike and hissing as the vine snakes away into the woods.

"Shit," Mike murmurs into Will's hair, breathing hard as he curls his arms protectively around Will's back. "Are you okay?"

Will lifts his face, and Mike's heart does a complicated twisty thing when he sees that his cheeks are stained with tears. "S' it gone?" Will asks hoarsely, and Mike nods quickly, reaching up to brush Will's hair out of his face. "Then- yeah, I think I'm okay."

"Good," Mike murmurs, and as Will tries to shift away, he finds his arms tightening around him instead, keeping him in place. Will freezes, glancing up at him with wide eyes, and Mike swallows. "I- sorry," he whispers, loosening his grip a little but still not letting go, and despite his efforts his gaze falls to Will's lips. They're- very chapped, from the unnatural cold in the air, probably, or maybe from the nervous lip biting that Mike should- definitely not be noticing.

He's not sorry. Not for any of it, really. He probably should be, but he's not.

Mike leans forward and presses his lips to Will's.

Maybe it's sheer dumb luck that Will kisses back. Maybe Will's just hopped up on adrenaline, or maybe it's the heat of the moment, or maybe he's not doing it on purpose, but frankly Mike would be fine with any of those reasons, because Will is kissing him back, and it's tentative and shaky and nervous, but it's happening all the same.

Will's lips are warm, and chapped just like Mike had been noticing, and it's a glancing sort of kiss, more chaste than Mike would maybe prefer, but it's- something. They're something.

He pulls back after a minute, sucking in a soft breath as his eyes flutter open and meet Will's own. "Don't scare me like that again," he whispers.

"Can't promise anything," Will murmurs, mouth twisting into a small, rare smile. I made him smile, Mike thinks, a thrilled flame flickering up his spine, again.

"Try," he retorts, and Will presses his forehead against Mike's, laughing lightly.

He glances up, eyes wide and pleased as their noses brush. "I'll do my best."

Good enough. "Sorry I kissed you."

Will quirks an eyebrow. "No you're not."

"No, I'm not," Mike agrees, and grins all teeth.

Will laughs, and it's such a sweet sound, quiet and soft but so loud in the dead silence of the woods, and Mike leans in to catch his lips with his own again.

Again, Will kisses back.
