Miss Cackle's Academy for Witches stood at the top of a high mountain surrounded by a pine forest. It looked more like a prison than a school, with its gloomy grey walls and turrets. Sometimes you could see the pupils on their broomsticks flitting like bats above the playground wall, but usually the place was half hidden in mist, so that if you had glanced up at the mountain you would probably not have noticed the building was there at all. Everything about the school was dark and shadowy. There were long, narrow corridors and winding staircases.

The worst witch 1998 sexuality Headcanons no one asked for
Nobody asked for this but I'm rewatching my comfort show rn and these came to my mind in episode 2.
Please keep in mind, that this is a headcanon for when the girls are teens/adults. WE DON'T SEXUALIZE CHILDREN ON THIS BLOG. THANK YOU.
Mildred: she is unsure about her sexuality. Probably bi or poly
Maud: definitely a little lesbian
Jadu: same as Maud
Ruby: straight
Enid: I'm torn between bi and straight
Drusilla: pan (might be influenced by her actress Holly Rivers)
Ethel: so, she'd usually be the kind of character whom people see as gay because of her rivalry with the main character. However, I think her crush on Nick in Weirdsister College is so damn cute,so I'd say either bi or straight
Fenny and Gris: they're both either chaotic lesbians (even if that's really mainstream in their case) or both just besties and totally straight (tbh to me they're "just" besties 🙈)
Sybil, Clarice will follow once I'm at season 2 in my rewatch!

Q -How popular was tww98? ✨
So, I always wish I was old enough to thirst over Kate Duchene in 1998. I’d have thrived as a fan girl.
But I often wonder how popular tww truly was at the time? Georgina Sherrington (Mildred) said people actually came up to her in the street—over a CITV show!!
Plus, the hundreds of ‘98 fics written on ff.net/ao3 across a steady stream of 25+ years speaks volumes. As well as the inspiration for 3 further spinoffs/reboots.
I’d love to know the statistics!
do you think Kate Duchene (or somebody, anybody) ever warned Raquel Cassidy about all the thirsty girls/women/others pining over her when she took the role of Miss Hardbroom?
haha i’d bet it’d be/is an uber shock to her tbh… controversial opinion..? i was crushing on drill when i watched 1998… is the /whole// hoard of fan girls for constance? any other drill fans out there?

An excerpt from an interview with Georgina Sherrington where she discusses her time on the set of "The Worst Witch." Here, she talks about her adult co-stars and shares a funny story about Kate Duchêne's audition for Miss Hardbroom.
You can watch the full interview on Youtube here or watch her in Stop/Eject.

The problem I have with Cas Crowfeather pt. #1
Usually, I am not doing serious posts in which I talk about characters I don’t like. I did it for fun on my Winx sideblog on which I did/do a post series in which I bitch about season 5. But that is fun. This is serious business. So why that? I started watching Weirdsister College yesterday again and Cas was just the most unlikeable new character ever in a first episode. But let’s break this down:
We see her first when she rides her bike to college and gets stopped by Ethel’s car. She’s angry and switches the traffic light to red. Fine. If I was in her situation I’d be pissed too. Too bad, that I hate riding a bike and therefore as a car driver hate those who do but lets get back to the show.
The first time she attracts negative attention is when she enters Milly’s room, sees Ethel and immediately starts bitching:

Tumblr media
And Ethel (at least seems to be) is really sorry and apologizes and what does Cas do?
Tumblr media
Ohh, you blame it on the servants! Girl? Ethel DID not drive! So how is that blaming the servants when the chauffeur maybe has a problem with bicycles? Every car driver has a problem with bicycles.
So Cas stays a total bitch and so Ethel volunteers to make the breakfast in the morning as an offering of peace. For Ethel’s standards that is the nicest thing in the world. Yes, we know she only tries to be on good terms with Mildred so that Mildred draws a picture of the all-seeing eye so that they can all pass. But firstly: Cas does not know that Ethel is a bit fake friendly here and secondly Milly does this for Nick only and gets upset later on when he wants to go before Ethel so that the all-seeing eye will also let her pass. So Ethel actually never had the chance to pass the all-seeing eye with Milly's help because she wouldn't help her anyway even though Ethel acts nice now. So Ethel does not even benefit from acting nice.
So but what happens next? It’s the next morning and Cas says this:
Tumblr media
(At least that is what she says in the German dub I don’t really understand her accent very well in the English original)
So. Excuse me? Yes, Ethel failed with the breakfast but she did it anyway! Why does Cas need to bitch here again? It’s obvious, that her character is only there to be Milly’s cheerleader. She has no reason yet to be so negative about Ethel. If she’d know her like Milly, yes, then it would be fine if she mistrusted her but out of nowhere?? That’s just pretty damn uncool from her.
And now look at her face when Ethel passed the all-seeing eye:
Tumblr media
What.A.Fkn.Bitch.
So don’t get me wrong. Ethel is a bitch herself and we love her for that. The problem I have with Cas is that she treats Ethel like shit from the start without knowing her. I am also pretty allergic to talking behind someone's back. Cas has zero reason to behave that way and while doing so she proves that SHE is the actual bitch in here.
Sorry if you like her but she is just the worst. A badly written character only there to be on Milly’s side in every situation. I really wished they had brought Maud back. She was a lovely bestie and a well-written character who even had some arguments with Milly. But Cas? Is always there to defend Milly out of nowhere for no reason. Milly does not need a cheerleader. We also don't need someone to bitch about Ethel. We know that Ethel isn't the nice girl next door without Cas being bitchy about her
What f*cks me up too is this scene:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's just the worst to talk about someone's iconic fashion statement as something bad. Especially calling it childish. I'll never forget wearing two normal bunches (without braiding) at age 14 and my friend telling me that it looked childish. Ew. Eww. I remember Cas also criticizing Milly's fashion style later on and wanting to change it - which Milly does. It is not wrong to try something new or to change one's style to make a step into a new stage of life. But one has to do it on their own. Without people judging. It has to be the own free will. And I hate Cas judging Milly for that. It's okay if Milly wants to change it herself but Cas talking bad about it is not okay.
There will be a part #2 eventually if I have to vent again while rewatching. I love the show and just had to get it off my chest lmao.

The thing about The Worst Witch (1998) is that the adult actors act as if they're in a serious adult show. They don't do the "look, this is cute and fun and all that, but no REAL work" thing. They put all of it in it.

Hello it’s been a while since I wrote this post - I am still working on the fanfic but guys I lovvvve this little story I’m working on…well two stories now.
It’s got a lot more work needed but a few people have interacted with this post again recently so I thought I’d give a small update.
I'm writing a Worst Witch (1998) fan fiction. I've become a bit obsessed with the series again and Constance Hardbroom remains to be one of my favourite characters of all time.
Tumblr media
I don't know why I feel so embarrassed about it. There's literally nothing wrong about writing fan fiction. Anyone else like this or are you normal?

Tbh I don't know if it was on purpose or if the tree was just basically there. Isn't it actually Cambridge where they filmed the movie? So, no. I doubt they went that deep.
If there was a second season.....idk either 🤣 because Ben is an amazing boyfriend. He overcame his hate for supernatural stuff and accepte Milli the way she is. Yes, Hobbes is the bad boy but I hope they wouldn't have done a triangle àl la twilight. But maybe they would have. On the other hand, they really also built up Hobbes x Ethel so they might have ended up together. Maybe with Hobbes realizing how amazing Ethel is and how much she actually cares about him. And that it was mainly Mildred's outsider personality he connected with but not her as a person, while Ethel shares his way of thinking, ambition etc. I hope it would be Milli realizing, that Ben is the better choice and some slow-burn angsty Hobbes x Ethel. (I really should start the fanfiction sometime...?) what do you think?
I know I'm looking too deep into this but when Mildred met up with Hobbes when the latter was under that lemon tree had me thinking of what lemons symbolize. Then I had found this stuff:
Tumblr media
The Symbolism of LemonSometimes it is considered a symbol of longevity, purification, love, and friendship, and other times it is seen to be symbolic of bitterness and disappointment. Catholic tradition linked the fruit to fidelity (https://www.saje.com/blogs/ingredient-garden/lemon#:~:text=The%20Symbolism%20of%20Lemon&text=Sometimes%20it%20is%20considered%20a,linked%20the%20fruit%20to%20fidelity. ).
If "Wit", "Uniqueness", "Defectiveness", "Longevity", "Love", "Friendship", "Bitterness", "Disappointment" and "Fidelity" ain't Nick Hobbes, I don't know what is...

the first three earthsea books were all published between 1968 and 1972, actually! So it’s entirely possible that Jill Murphy felt inspired by those to write worst witch (though unlike JKR, *she’d* admit it because as far as I know Murphy is a lovely and gracious and goodhearted woman).
Thanks for sharing the dates! But I wasn’t saying that Le Guin didn’t originate the idea, just that the conversation itself ignores a pretty famous book series that predates Harry Potter.
Tumblr media
What I’m trying to say is: J.K. Rowling stole more from The Worst Witch than from Ursula Le Guin, and so Jill Murphy deserves to be a part of this conversation. It feels strange that Le Guin neglects to mention her.
