While I absolutely love the romance and the character relationships that Cassie develops in The Dark Artifices and now going into TWP, I think my favorite thing about the series is more about the political themes and commentary that she weaves throughout the books, because she does so in a way that gives me full-body shivers. I love coming onto the internet and seeing all the KitxTy DruxAsh etc etc content, but what I'm most excited to see are the themes that Cassie will impose in TWP, and what kind of real-world commentary we are about to see.

We know that TWP is supposed to be set around 2015/2016 era, and if we remember those times (how can we not, it's permanently imprinted in our brains lol) the world was changing drastically, especially in the political sphere, which Cassie defamiliarized into the conflict at the end of TDA that led to the split between the Shadowhunters and perfectly set up for the plot of TWP.

What's scary to me is how obvious the problem seems from a reader's standpoint, because the story is about demon hunters and mythical creatures and their made-up political system, but then you remember that every political system is made-up, even those in real life, and how what seems obvious isn't actually that obvious to so many other people. Characters like Zara and her allies are so frustrating and annoying and give me intense rage-fueled shivers because they are reflective of the stuff we see happening today.

Anyways. So excited and a little scared for the plot of TWP.

Happy New Year!

The end has come! Time for the new year! (And the beginning of the TWP era!)

I discovered The Shadowhunter Chronicles this year, in June. A little shocking, I know. I fell in love with the books like nothing before, and this discovery was literally one of my golden eras. It was also this year that I started writing my novel, which is also an era that's not going to end any time soon. But my biggest breakthrough this year was joining Tumblr, where I got an expansion on everything, including fandoms. Apart from TSC, I'm in Shadow and Bone, The Folk of The Air, Good Omens (just started), Percy Jackson, and The Raven Cycle.

But this a people appreciation post, which means that I am, yet again, digressing.

@jeahreading - My best friend on Tumblr, knows all my deep dark secrets and would forgive me even if I lied to her. Jeah is who I go to after a rough day, who I flirt with on a daily basis, and who I'm going to join a group blog with. I love her for being the kind of friend that only exists in books, I love her for almost always liking my posts first, and I love her for reading my writing, even if it is sometimes crappy. I love you forever, angel.

@mayaheronthorn - My first friend here. She's just about as obsessed with KitTy as I am, if not more, and will always sit and read my TWP theories and headcanons, even though they come extremely spontaneously, and are mostly just rants. I think I wrote a TWP fic to her once through a random convo? - but that's besides the point. I hope we get to talk more next year, and you finally come around to posting your novel from time to time! Love you lots!

Hey! Sorry for the random ask but since you post a lot about The Shadowhunter Chronicles I wanted to ask if you've read The Infernal Devices? The Mortal Instruments has never really been my thing but I thought the setting of TID in Victorian England sounded interesting, so I wanted to know if you can read that series without having read TMI first

The Mortal Instruments has some spoilers for The Infernal Devices, so if you wanna read that story in its entirety without having any spoilers about the ending you should read TID first, plus chronologically TID come before IMI.

If you want to read them in release date order, however, you should start with TMI.

Personally, if i’m gearing up for an entire reread of the franchise, I do it like this: TMI - TID - TDA - TLH - TWP (which hasn’t come out yet), and then all the short story collections and standalone books, but if I’m just rereading them for fun I’ll read them in whatever order I want.

Honestly, you should just read them in whatever order you want — although if you want to read about the Victorian and Edwardian eras specifically, you should read The Infernal Devices first, followed by The Lady Hours.

clary- not at all. she listens to freak weirdo music. also she stopped keeping tabs on pop culture in 2008 so what would she even know about taylor swift unless one of her shadowhunter friends makes her listen to her. i think it's possible that in like 2014 she heard a 1989 song and loved it but didn't find out it was taylor swift until 6 months later when simon had to inform her

simon- again, weirdo freak music. he'd be the guy who only starts liking her because of folklore but unfortunately cassanda's timeline only goes to like, 2013 rn and will only go to 2015 for twp so. we'll never see that. i think he has nothing against her music because he is a Music Appreciator but he is probably a huge asshole about her as a person becuase he has a haters soul <3

jace- well i don't think jace listens to modern music <3 however i think in his post 2008 life he has more appreciation for human world art and he would eventually come across a vinyl of red or something (he's totally the type of annoying to have a record player do not dispute me on this) and i think from there he would like her, this is how clary is introduced to her music btw

alec- i literally don't think alec listens to music. other people listen to music around him, and he does NOT have a haters soul so he is NOT an asshole about any of said music.

izzy- yeah <3 and i think her and simon have had fights about it <3 it's not that deep to her though she only fights with him about taylor swift for fun and then they have crazy sex

seen others talk about how great it is to grow up with this series since its spanned so long now, and it will be at LEAST another five to six years. i cant wait

when i started tsc, the characters were several years older than me, and slowly i became the same age, and now im surpassing them, and im older than all of the teenage protags i couldnt wait to be like 😭😭 oh what an interesting and beloved experience. i really cant wait !!! ill be so old when it finally comes to an end

the biggest problem with Queen of Air and Darkness to me is that it really should have been two books. I really enjoy the grief exploration in that book in the wake of Livvy’s death felt cathartic to me on reread and I find Julian’s switch-off arc in relation to that fascinating. I enjoy Thule in terms of how it ties into the main arc with the blackthorns although I’m not crazy about the twp set ups from it. Basically there’s quite a bit in that book I do like but as a finale it’s rushed and disappointing. I also do think either Julian or Emma or both dying would have made the ending slay and I say this as someone who clearly looooves them both and Blackstairs (considering how much I love blackstairs as it is think I would be even more insane about it if we got full tragic potential realized).

Grace x Lucie is thee toxic yuri dynamic in tsc and I think ya’ll are cowards for not paying attention to it. Literally the only reason I would reread tlh is to write fic about them ChoI era because someone should.

on a related note Lucie Herondale reads as a lesbian to me, she says at one point she’s never been attracted to a boy other than Jesse who is kind of a phantom she can make into whatever she wants / project storybook romance tropes onto in a sense for most of the books and she reads as more attracted to Cordelia with the whole ‘Beautiful Cordelia’ fanfiction and like I said her most interesting dynamic with the most chemistry is her and Grace, so yeah I get comp het vibes personally I know that’s my subjective read.

I’m pretty neutral on Clary sometimes I really liked her sometimes I was frustrated by her but I do think this counts as unpopular since most either hate or love her. I do think she falls into the 2010s heroine who is written to have an overly romantically focused arc but all her interesting bits of characterization are about tangential platonic dynamics that the author doesn’t care to elaborate on much… but also this could be an ungenerous or overly generous assessment since it’s been years since I touched og tmi. I do side eye some people for giving Jace a lot of grace to be ‘complex’ and process his trauma and be dismissive of how much she goes through in the books ( I kind of hate Jace. without nuance)

I think I deserve one on one Tessa and Julian interactions in twp, not for any logical reason I just think I deserve it since they’re my two favorite tsc characters. And there’s a lot of fan service in recent tsc anyway… let me have this.

Kieran is overrated I don’t dislike him and enjoy him in the context of Kierarktina and as a foil to Julian, but I don’t fervently love him the way a lot of people do. (I also really disliked his fandom when the tda books were coming out so that might influence this).

I want Thule! Emma to come into play in twp … I’m very interested in the idea of her in the aftermath of Thule Julian and Sebastian’s deaths. I had an idea for a fic about her but didn’t write it partly because of laziness partly because I felt I’d have to go back to tmi to remember endarkened lore for that.

Grace Blackthorn discourse was kind of unserious… not because I don’t think people can have valid reasons to dislike her obviously those exist. What she did to James was sexual assault and of course fans who hate her for it are valid. But I COULD NOT with some of statements about her especially on twitter that were like ‘well if she was a Male Character ya’ll would never forgive her and she would never get a redemption arc she only does cause she’s a pretty white girl’ like GORL. GORL what universe are you living in what paranormal/fantasy media do you consume and engage in fandoms for if you think that a male character who does a nebulous magical consent violation is going to get Less grace (no pun intended) from the narrative and fandom than a female character and would NEVER get a redemption arc. I can’t even ya’ll are dumb. If I’m being really generous maybe they just don’t read/watch a lot of paranormal media other than tsc because otherwise I…

Hi, I know you're taking a break from the fandom rn, but feel free to answer this ask whenever it suits you (no negativity I promise!)

I finished COT, and I felt like it gave off different vibes from other books (not just COG or COI - CC's books in general). I feel like it was darker in the beginning, what with James being sullen and Matthew being withdrawn and Cordelia being exhausted. And the part with London being all dark and silent and lonely and the Watchers going around - that kind of aura, I don't think anything like that was prevalent in other books.

I was just wondering what you thought about that? Did it feel kinda different from the usual too? The tone of the book, especially in the beginning, seemed to give off despair and used hope, though that could be due to James' gloom and all the miscommunication and cracked relationships-

What are your thoughts on the vibe of COT, especially compared with the other books in the series and in general?

You're absolutely right about James's perspective but I'd also add Cordelia's. Everything seemed really dark through their eyes till chapter 23, I haven't felt this level of depression and hopelessness for a long time.

Oh oh I should mention that I absolutely loved the "Dark London" part with everyone losing their minds. Downworlders clapping for so long their hands start bleeding, mothers singing lullabies to empty prams😳

Yes, I certainly feel the same about the different vibe. Some of the chot scenes seemed more.... mature? comparing to her other books. The way the whole Matthew's alcoholism situation was handled, Grace's regrets, Cordelia's depression, Thomas trying to find the healthiest ways to build his relationship with Alastair, Charles's fears and lack of confidence in himself and everything around, James and Matthew's moments in Edom. The way it was written feels different, but I like this particular change.

And for some reason this book feels shorter than the first 2. Maybe it's because my personal favs had less pages than something else, but it's just me. (Arianna deserved as many pages as Thomastair, MAYBE EVEN MORE I SAID WHAT I SAID). And maybe since I'm reading pretty fast, especially when it comes to Cassie's books, I can finish this whole book in a day. I'll be completely satisfied the day Cassie's books have around 1200 pages ☝🏻or more😡

So, about the "mature" part. Years pass, Cassie's audience grows and I'm really happy that her books sorta "grow" with us? Dude idk why thinking in English is so hard😞 if it was a Russian platform, I'd slay😤So! Cassie added mature topics before, some of the TMI moments were really dark, but the way these topics are written/handled is just getting better. My personal opinion is that TLH characters just feel more real than others and this is the result of Cassie developing her writing. I feel like she's still in the process of trying new things/ways to describe and create sth. And this is why the books have a different vibe.

It can be confusing sometimes, but I'm actually glad these changes happen. I understand that writing one series for decades can be exhausting and I know Cassie has big plans for the additional TLH content, TWP and stuff, but I was so afraid one day she can just give up on it (+ all the hate she received after chot release 😒). So knowing that she's still trying new things gives me hope cause it means she's still invested in this series. So I'm really looking forward to her future TSC project👀+ I'm continuing sending her nice asks

Rant about Wessa to me!

ughhhhhh with pleasure. they are my favourite couple.

Def the most disproportionately represented in CC's written work when fronted with the worth they have both, to the fandom and story. If that makes sense. And not for the better.

I think my biggest gripe with the way they are represented is that their true 'arc' as a couple ends with them getting married, when really, in the grand scheme of a relationship that is actually only little more than the beginning.

The real struggle in one's arc is how to stay together through thick and thin. how to navigate.

In fact, the way that CC wrote Malec, is what i HOPED she would do with Wessa. In fact for a long time i assued we would get that. When TLH was announced i was estaticcccc to be able to back to that time, and was dissapointed for a long time again, not only that during the era when Wessa was alive and kicking was beyond sidelined we got no standalones or Red Scrolls equivalent for literally the top 3 ship fav in TSC. They are full of chemistry could fill copious novels with their adventures and family building idk why they were so disrespectfully side lined during TLH. They should have gotten standalones while the TLH came out during the TLH era. Just like how Red Scrolls did for TMI in the second half trilogy.

And i think that's why i'm so salty that TSC ends at TWP. Don't get me wrong I want Kitty and things to come to an eventual end, but i feel like toxicallyyyyy, i'm owed more with Wessa. I have so many questions and lived experiences i think we could learn or know more of (i wrote an essay somewhat talking about this here for you last week if u want a refresher :P), from them as a couple beyond when they were just barely of age kids getting married. Their musings even as young adults were miles ahead of when i was 17 reading them, so imagine what they would be when they were in their late 20s, early 30s and beyond.

So yeah. I apologise if this was a bit wop wooop of a response. I'm in my feels today. I had a shit day so i'm feel cynical.

It just REALLY Just is so well written AND it always satiates that era and time period of London so deeply!

JAPAN! So one of my best friends lives there. She's dear to me. I'm visiting her! But also, I've wanted to go to Japan since I was a little kid because I grew up in a Japanese language/culture immersion program. So this is like, a lifelong dream coming true!

Honestly, TLH is always going to give me spring vibes. (Oddly, this is probably my strongest time-of-the-year TSC association - it's just such a gentle and comforting series, like a breezy spring day with flowers blooming after the frost is gone for the year.) I associate it from start to finish with light academia pastel vibes and dewy flowers, and the end of ChoT is New Beginnings incarnate.

Here's a recent commission I bought that reflects the Vibe of TLH for me! It's on my wall now. :)

But yes, agree that TID is winter (for Wessa proposal lmao) and that TMI is fall based on Vibes. Not sure about TWP yet since I've only read the first chapter, I'll wait and see what I think when it comes out!
