I really like the idea that one of the weird lurkers of your blog (like me) just hangs around looking for inspiration to write papers about. Like I realize that's not how it probably actually went down, but 2017 to 2022 seems like a pretty reasonable lead time from reading your post to conducting the research to writing and publishing the paper.

It’s amusing that the original post only got 22 notes (likes), but when I looked at it again it had 19, which I’m choosing to interpret as the authors sheepishly withdrawing their likes in order to preserve their anonymity.

I think they probably just googled the phrase “friends to lovers pathway” before using it as the title of their paper and pulled up my post, or the other alternative being that the post popped onto their timeline when they were in the early stages of manuscript prep, and it was a moment of academic serendipity. I definitely don’t think I inspired the work in any way - just the quote and title. But it’s funny to imagine being studied.

I should say that I don’t necessarily expect permission to be asked if people intend to prosper or advance their careers from my words or art. However, I do appreciate the courtesy of being told that it’s happened. So far I’ve been quoted in a published book, quoted to name an academic paper, a person is actively selling plushies and other merchandise based on a post of mine while claiming that it’s their intellectual property actually, and screenshots of my work are regularly considered hilarious enough to steal but not pay me for. (the cricket post in particular was screencapped, went viral on Twitter some years ago without reference to me, was shared around BBC journalist twitter, and hundreds of people in the media industry said things like ‘lol we should pay this person to write’ …. in the apparent ignorance of the fact that if they had asked I would probably be open to…. Being paid to write……… and all the other times my posts have broken containment to go viral on other platforms for other people, with comments about how I should be commissioned to write a book; obviously that’s a normal part of online journalism and media, and I’m not naive about it, but it’s a bit much to for these people to be enriching their platforms with screencapped content, without the OP’s knowledge let alone consent, and joking about how they should pay for it or would read a whole book about it, when they’re the only people who could actually do something about it in the nightmare media landscape.) And nobody told me about any of these examples, I always find out by trying to retrieve links to my own stuff, or by friends telling me that someone else has gone so viral with my recognisable work that it got around to them.

It's no coincidence that many of the bad decisions made by social media companies and very popular products/services we use lately are trying to copy from Elon Musk's decisions on Twitter. He hasn't had it for that long, and if these higher ups actually look at the user feed back, a majority of people don't like the changes that were made, and the majority of the people that actually do like the changes are Elon bootlickers, much like the mindset of the higher ups.

You don't find success in copying others. If you do then you're the equivalent of some random (non-cable/satellite) pay TV subscription in Chicago that quickly shuts down within a year or two. You find a gap in the market and fill it or provide a better product that doesn't hinder the customer's experience just for the sake of cheap profits. It's why Cohost and Mastodon exist.

If these companies continue to copy the changes made to Twitter, a website that keeps dying as the months go by, and think that making their services worse so they can make minuscule profits, people are gonna abandon ship and an actual web 3.0 movement that doesn't involve greedy ass sins trying to use outdated technology made in 2008 as an unsustainable and inaccessible method of currency is gonna initiate.

Diese Welt ist so schlecht eingerichtet für Unorganisierte und Vergessliche

Kurz bevor Elon Musk Twitter kauft, will ich schnell mein Twitter-Archiv runterladen, für alle Fälle. Ich gehe auf die Twitter-Seite, auf der man das tun kann und werde aufgefordert, mein Passwort aus Sicherheitsgründen noch mal einzugeben.

Ich öffne 1Password und gebe mein 1Password-Passwort ein. Ich suche das Passwort für diesen Twitteraccount und kopiere es auf die Twitterseite. 

Die Twitterseite sagt: “Help us keep your data safe. To verify your identity, we need to send you a verification code to *****@k**************.***.” Weil ich meine Mail an meine eigene Domain kulturindustrie.com bekomme, sie aber mit Gmail lesen möchte, habe ich eingerichtet, dass Gmail die Mail von dort holt. Das passiert allerdings nur in Zehnminutenabständen. Erstens werde ich in zehn Minuten (eigentlich schon in zwei Sekunden) vergessen haben, dass ich mein Twitterarchiv runterladen wollte, und zweitens: “Verification codes expire after 10 minutes.”

Weil ich dieses Wartezeitproblem aus jahrelanger Erfahrung kenne, öffne ich die Webmailseite meines Mailhosters, suche in 1Password nach den Logindaten, logge mich dort ein und finde den Verifikationscode, eine sechsstellige Zahl. Die gebe ich bei Twitter ein.

Das ist jetzt eine vereinfachte Darstellung. In Wirklichkeit bin ich während dieses Vorgangs mehrmals abgelenkt worden und habe alles vergessen, woraufhin mich 1Password, der Webmailaccount und die Twitterdatenrunterladeseite aus Timeout-Gründen ausgeloggt haben und ich wieder von vorn anfangen musste.

Aber irgendwann ist es geschafft und ich kann mein Twitterarchiv anfordern. Es wird bis zu 24 Stunden dauern, sagt Twitter, bis es bereitgestellt wird.

In den nächsten Tagen erreichen mich eine Twitter-DM und eine Mail von Twitter, in denen steht, dass ich mein Archiv jetzt herunterladen kann und das bitte bis zum irgendwievielten November tun soll, weil es dann wieder gelöscht wird. Weil der Zeitpunkt gerade nicht passt und ja auch noch gar nicht November ist, denke ich “später”.

Heute fällt es mir dann wieder ein und ich sehe nach, welcher Novembertermin in dieser Nachricht genannt wurde: “Your Twitter archive is ready for you to download and view using your desktop browser. Make sure you download it before Nov 4, 2022, 8:17:00 PM.” Die Frist ist vor ein paar Stunden abgelaufen.

I've seemingly run into a thing where Gmail of all things doesn't always actually send me emails (wtf, google). It's rare, at least, but it still seems to happen. Twitter? I can understand with its enshittification and all, but at least I still get DMs even if I'm never actually notified. Tumblr?
