Seeing one tornado is pretty rad. Seeing two at the same time? Mind-blowing. This storm in NW Oklahoma during a big high risk in 2012 dropped twins more than one time! This was an all-timer of a chase day and early in the season too, April 14th! It’s been so hot everyone is a bit grumpy. So I ‘opened’ a horse/vehicle wash in the driveway, much to the twin’s delight. * I kept control of the hose, but otherwise they went wild with sponges, soap, and buckets. We haven’t even gone “back” to school (air quotes - cause it’s nursery school) but I’m already thinking about Halloween. Last year they were Foxes, like Ding Ding the stuffed fox who lives with us (I did a blog post about it). * This year the twins will be big enough to try trick or treating. We try and get outside in the morning before it gets so miserably hot. We rock the PJs and sweat. I told them not to bring their mowers on our walk unless they pushed them the whole way. And when they got tired I refused to carry them. * Enter my Dad, Papa. “Of course I’ll carry them. And hold your hand.” While this looks like K entreating me, I’m pretty sure this is the toddler version of giving Momma the finger. * We chose to buy a home with my parents in 2015. When it doesn’t rain for 19 days and then rains for five in a row this Momma still goes outside. The rain is warm enough that it’s not cold to be wet. My kids aren’t so sweet they melt. The last 10 days my 6 yo niece and 9 yo stayed with us for Camp Nana and Papa. Four kids in the house and the dynamics changed enormously. Parenting someone else’s kids comes with a completely different set of rules. * My first rule is: feed no child ANY food without explicit direction from their parent. I’m not messing with Food allergies or ethical/religious food restrictions. Kids are not, as they say, “reliable historians” (aka liars) and cannot always be trusted when ice cream is involved. * My second rule is: pick your battles but enforce your rules. Thanks to my baby brother and @lefthandjen I know that Aunties can have rules and still be cool. Sure you can ride your bikes; but you gotta have on helmets and closed toed shoes. You can’t be in the pool if there is lightening or thunder; but you want to swim in the pouring rain? Everyday we start the day with Organic Baby Oatmeal. Because my twins are still small for their age we top it with a splash of organic sweetened cream. * For breakfast every day I have a cin-raisin bagel with a bit of real butter. And a Diet Coke with Lime. Don’t give me grief about the Diet Coke. I like my caffeine icy cold and fizzy, and I hate coffee. * That morning was especially bleary because we took a radical step of allowing the twins to stay up past their bedtime the night before. We rarely deviate by 15 min. But we made an exception for a backyard BBQ with out of town friends; and they stayed up a whole hour past their bedtime.
