My thoughts on Return's Audrey Horne, one year after finishing the return.
Tumblr media
You can read the first thoughts had, after finishing the return, here:
As you could see, at first, I wasn't a big fan of Audrey's scenes in the return. I thought they were very lackluster, and a waste of Audrey's character and an even bigger waste of Sherilyn Fenn as an actress. And part of me still thinks that.
But after watching and rewatching the show countless times I've found myself utterly captivated by Audrey's scenes. Audrey: arguably the most popular female character in twin peaks, after Laura Palmer, shows up in only 4 out of 18 episodes, characterized in such a different way, with such weird scenes, and she is gone just as quick as she came, leaving us with no answers and bigger questions ... Only David Lynch would have the balls to do this to such a beloved and popular character, and I respect him for that, a lot. I think Audrey's scenes are the best and most thought provoking scenes in the return and in any movie/series I've ever seen. I don't think any show can do what those scenes did.
As much as I love Audrey's scenes in the return, part of me is still bitter that we go so little Audrey material.
I hate when people say that Audrey was a "big fan favorite character of the orignal show", and she totally is, don't get me wrong! But people often put her in this box and it makes it feel like that is all she was; a fan favorite. And I hate that notion, cuz Audrey was essential to twin peaks.
The development hell that TP went through during the end of season 2 (the rushing, new plots, rewrites, etc ...) made Audrey turn too much away from what was originally twin peaks. And Lynch, probably motivated by those things, ended up putting Audrey in that bank explosion. Which makes me think how things would go if S3 released right after S2 ... Would Audrey be in a coma? Would evil coop take advantage of her? Would Audrey get more attention? And what about the cancelled spin off that eventually turned into Mulhoand Drive? Would it connect directly with the story of twin peaks? So many possibilities that never were and eventually lead to the return, which was completely understandable. The circumstances killed twin peaks, essentially killing Audrey and now she is just this husk of her former self, a damaged woman who can't even leave her own home alone. It's beautiful, really. And it makes me appreciate Audrey's scenes for what they are.
But I still can't help but wonder what we would've gotten if Lynch could've done what he wanted to do.
Idk if Sherilyn and David had any bad blood during production but to me it felt like Lynch loved Fenn way less than he loved the other actors ...
Lynch really, really loves his actors, it's rather obvious: Kyle, Dern, Watts, etc.
And seeing how Audrey's original scene were her being beaten up by Richard leaves a bad taste in my mouth ... I'm glad Fenn made him change to what we got today. And in a meta sense, Audrey's scenes can be seen as just Fenn and Lynch having a discussion about her wanting to be added to the show, I prefer interpreting it in other ways.
Overall, I wouldn't change Audrey's scenes at all, I think they are perfect the way they are. But I just cannot remove that feeling that Lynch just didn't love Audrey enough to give her a bigger role.
I saw someone point out that, maybe, Diane could be entirely replaced by Audrey, and that blew my mind on how perfect it would be. The scenes wouldn't have to change much, not even their personalities tbh, imagine: a tulpa Audrey, with Cole and the FBI, trying to find Coop and evil coop, and at the end Audrey is freed from the lodge and reunites with Cooper ... A girl can dream right? That couldn't happen since Lynch had to add Laura Dern somehow.
Speaking of those scenes, I really hate that kiss between real Diane and Cooper ... It gives the idea that Diane was his true love all along and uh ... Caroline? Annie? But that's a story for another day ...
Also! Lynch was such a massive troll with these promo photos lmaaao

A collection of my Twin Peaks art from the past few years in order to express that I'm absolutely devastated to hear about Lynch's passing. His works, as for many people, touched me in ways I can't fully express. RIP and thank you for providing amazing stories and characters which inspired, and will continue to inspire, others.

Laura Palmer theory...
First of all: RIP David Lynch 🙏 funkiest man to walk the earth
I don't think the real Laura Palmer ever shows up again in Twin Peaks after Fire Walk With Me.
Tumblr media
I don't interact a lot with the Twin Peaks fandom, so idk if this is an agreed-upon concept or a concept at all, but it's something I've thought about ever since I finished Twin Peaks. I'd like to discuss it.
Keep in mind that I haven't read the real diary of Laura Palmer or any of the twin peaks books; this theory is based entirely on the original series, movie, and the return.
Ok so, who is the "real" Laura Palmer? The real Laura is the girl we see in Fire Walk with Me, the one who has a dream/vision of Cooper before she dies. I think Fire Walk with Me is the only instance (excluding flashbacks and videos from the series) in which we witness the real Laura in the entirety of Twin Peaks; why? Well, I base this theory on the ending of the movie.
Tumblr media
After Laura is killed, we see her in the white lodge (yes, I think she is in the white lodge). She is accompanied by her angels (I like to imagine Cooper was sort of a guardian angel for Laura, irrelevant here tho).
I believe that by being in the white lodge, Laura Palmer finally found peace, and in a more generic way to put it, she went to heaven, and she stayed there forever.
Tumblr media
Now, episode 3. When we see a fake Laura Palmer. Why do I think this is a fake Laura? I think the lodge/red room works differently based on the person present there, and in this case, it was Cooper. He sees Laura, but that doesn't mean she is truly there in spirit, even the red man confirms this:
"She is my cousin, but doesn't she look almost exactly like Laura Palmer?"
Even the fake Laura sort of confirms it
"I feel like I know her"
I think this Laura is a manifestation created by lodge identities to "help" Cooper. Is this manifestation created by the black lodge? The white lodge? The arm? The fireman? I dunno, and it doesn't really matter in the context of this theory.
I believe the lodge/red room manifests a lot of things based on Cooper's mind. For example; in the final episode of S2, he sees Caroline and a fake Annie alongside the real Annie.
Like Laura, I believe that only the Annie who doesn't speak is the real Annie. Caroline and talking Annie are both manifestations created by the black lodge to mock and torture cooper based on his memories.
If we look at it that way, we can theorize that the first manifestations we see back in episode 3 were created by the white lodge as they were guiding Cooper. But here, in the final episode, the manifestations are being created by the black lodge to torture Cooper by bringing back his former dead lover and his new lover.
(I know the agreed upon thing reggarding the lodges is that the person/soul stays there. Maybe Caroline, Annie and Laura are stuck there. But I honestly find this way of thinking very boring so I'm choosing to ignore it in favor of my own vision of the rules in twin peaks.)
Anyways, back to Laura:
Tumblr media
I still think this "friendly" Laura is a manifestation, and so is the doppelganger Laura. Maybe by knowing more about Laura throughout the investigations, the black lodge created Laura's doppelganger to haunt Cooper based on his new knowledge about her.
Even tho Lodge Laura isn't real, they are based on Cooper's idea of Laura mixed with the lodge's guidance/tauntings.
Tumblr media
Now, the return...
Tumblr media
Unlike the previous Lauras, this Laura confirms she is, in fact, Laura Palmer.
But she isn't the Laura Palmer we know from Fire Walk with Me. This is the Laura that Cooper rescued from the past; this is Carrie Paige Laura.
Why do I believe that? Well, because of her hair.
In promo material for The Return, we see that Sheryl Lee is pictured with the Iconic long Laura Palmer hair with bangs, but the Laurs we see in the show are sporting shorter hair, the Carrie Paige hairstyle we see at the end of the season.
Tumblr media
I know that using the promo material in a theory is a bit flimsy, but I believe it's plausible.
Now, why would Carrie Paige be here? After all, Carrie herself says she isn't Laura Palmer in the final episode. Well, I believe that Carrie-Laura meeting Cooper in the red room is another manifestation created by the lodge to "guide" him; after all, that's what the lodge did back in season 1, episode 3.
"Is it future, or is it past?"
"Is this Laura Palmer, or is this Carrie Paige?"
Tumblr media
"Laura is the one"
One interesting thing we see Carrie-Laura do is remove her own face, and inside there is light.
Unlike in season 1 episode 3, where the white lodge was helping Cooper, this time it's the black lodge, wearing a mask of familiarity and a fake Laura, repeating dialogue we already know to trick Cooper and us. This Laura isn't here to help Cooper, she is here to confuse him, to taunt him. She gives the impression of being the real Laura, but Laura Palmer is dead.
"Find Laura."
Tumblr media
During the vision shown to Andy by the fireman, we see Laura Palmer surrounded by angels. Meaning that the real Laura is in heaven since the ending of Fire Walk with Me. But cooper doesn't know that.
The series ends with a blackout. In the lodge, Carrie-Laura removed her face, and we saw light, but it was a lie; in the end, Carrie Paige only caused a blackout.
Cooper goes back in time, creating a new timeline where Laura didn't die and became Carrie Paige. But that didn't solve anything, it was useless. And when Cooper returns the one he thinks is Laura to her old home, the one he thinks is "the one". Nothing happens, because this isn't the real Laura, and the real Laura is not coming back.
Tumblr media
This "theory" isn't all that polished so there may be some holes in it. I'd like to hear other twin peakers thoughts on it.
