whoever started calling 10 episode seasons a ‘binge-format’ is the bane of my existence
like genuinely a smaller number of episodes doesn’t make a binge format - releasing episodes all at once does, whether that’s anything from four episodes to twenty. (something that’s pretty standard right now because of the switch from paid channels to streaming services)
i’ve seen it suggested as well that shows with 20-25 episodes a season are inherently a better format and…. no????
twin peaks season one has nine episodes (including the pilot) - one of the best tv seasons of all time. artful, beautiful, mysterious, and good fun. makes great use of the tv form but doesn’t drag itself out.
twin peaks season two has twenty-one episodes - absolutely shambolic. there are seven good episodes, then eleven bad ones, then two good ones. s1 was so popular execs wanted to do a long season but knew people were getting frustrated about not knowing the killer’s identity, so forced lynch and frost to reveal it *way* too early and ruined the mid-point of the season. nine episode season could’ve meant the finale had the reveal, didn’t compromise the point of the show and still didn’t drag itself out.
20-25 episode seasons are so so often procedural shows that have stock characters and are more about the environment of the show than plot or character or meaning.
which is okay! like it’s good for entertainment purposes, plot isn’t difficult to follow as a lot of the episodes can be viewed as stand-alones. it functions a lot of the same way sitcoms do.
but comparing idk grey’s anatomy with a show like the bear (which you could also argue is a workplace drama) and saying oh it has 20-25 episodes so must be a better series is batshit.
short series make good shows!
in my option they make better shows, but that’s just my opinion
#i think the twin peaks analogy might be a little unfair because the return has 18 eps and is really good#but i think that’s because it goes against the grain of what a long series generally implies#like it has the mindset of a shorter series within a longer frame#short series#and also acting like 10 episodes series are a new thing beacuase of bingeing and streaming service culture is also complete rubbish#like breaking bad?#hannibal? the wrong mans? game of thrones?#trust me this isn’t new because of the bingeing model in the slightest

did any of you guys know that season 3 of twin peaks (18 episodes + special features) is packaged in an Eight Disc Set. this is partially because the special features are on one disc of their own, which is generally a fair move. the more insane reason is because the first two discs contain the following:
Disc 1: Episodes 1 and 2, plus Episodes 1 and 2 combined as a "Feature Length Presentation."
Disc 2: Episodes 3 and 4, plus Episodes 3 and 4 combined as a "Feature Length Presentation."
notable information is that neither discs' main menus offer a "play all" option like the previous seasons' dvd releases did. the subsequent discs appear to have 3 episodes each, save for Disc 7, which only has 2 episodes since that's all that remained.
Notable information for THAT is there would be no need for 8 entire discs had they simply put 3 episodes each on Discs 1 (eps 1-3) and 2 (4-6). Possibly could have even spread the special features across the remaining space on all the discs, but I understand that that would make viewing them a fucking hassle so that's fair, plus it's like 6 hours of stuff.
I have Thoughts and Feelings regarding data storage and wasting physical space. I do not think this issue is unique to Twin Peaks' release. But Why. That's so stupid. Are other shows' releases doing this shit? I'm trying to stop throwing around the word "pretentious" but why else do you waste an entire dvd disc PER DISC SET PRODUCED just so you can do a Feature Length Presentation on not just the first two episodes, but the first FOUR. I could get into the pacing of said episodes as a waste of data space but I won't. David Lynch works best with sub 10 episode season/series 45 minutes each. He doesn't need more. He is a talented director when given the correct constraints. That is all.
#op#OKAY SORRY I NEEDED TO BITCH#IM DONE IM GOOD IM NOT GONNA DEFEND 'LONG SCENE CAUSES POLLUTION' AS AN ARGUMENT AS IF THATS A VALID OPINION#I RECOGNIZE MY INSANITY

Cooper making Laura's angel disappear
This is a bit uncanny: if you sync the first scene of overlap between TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME and THE RETURN's Part 17, then it makes it appear as if Cooper's electrical-arrival to "save" Laura is what causes her angel to disappear in the wall painting.
I'm tempted to believe this *may* be intentional synchronicity b/c (a) it's very thematically appropriate (on one level, at least), given Coop's wrongheaded white-knight attempt to change Laura's past, & fits with her fear-filled scream at him moments later in Part 17's retelling:
It also wouldn't be the first persuasive example of apparent intentional syncing in THE RETURN. In particular, see the below excerpts of a sync of the glass box scenes in Parts 1 & 2-3, found by fans in 2017, and highlights of which can be found in my Twitter thread here .
The most well-known alleged TP:TR sync is the one, alleged by a fan in 2017, claiming Parts 17-18 are synced in their entirety, if one begins playback of each simultaneously. I don't find it persuasive (at least, as it was formulated back then), & TP:TR EP Sabrina Sutherland has denied that Lynch intended that particular sync parallel, but who knows, there may be something more there.
Perhaps all of these alleged syncs are just coincidence, mere pareidolia. Still, there is at least an argument for intentionality, given: a) they stem from shared scenes of overlap; b) they're thematically fitting; & c) there is arguably more than one somewhat convincing example.

🧡💜💕
🧡: What is a popular (serious) theory you disagree with?
Any of the extremely meta theories about s3 of Twin Peaks (that every storyline is an analogy for some part of making television, or that Cooper and Laura have broken out of the fictional universe of Twin Peaks and are now in the "real world," etc). Especially when people are like "look at this branded product you can see in ep 18, there was never anything like this in any of the other episodes!" as evidence Cooper is now in the real world. CHANTAL EATS CHEETOES. There have always been name brand products and references to real people, places and things in Twin Peaks, you just weren't paying attention.
💜: Which character is way hotter than everyone else seems to think?
Blackie O'Reilly. Tissaia de Vries. Sir Malcolm Murray. Otto Hightower. I'm a simple woman, I like manipulative old people.
💕: What is an unpopular ship that you like?
Ethan/Hecate. Yes, I will be giggling and blushing and thinking "Hecate has a boyyyyyfriend" instead of hoping Ethan goes back to London to save Vanessa from Dracula or whatever I was meant to be thinking during s3.

I've Never Been Impressed By Your Friends From New York And London
Yorkshire
Wakefield
The Cribs - A Band of Brothers
Conor McNicholas “We loved The Cribs, they were like our house band and they were our band, the mainstream didn’t want them.”
The “New Rock Revolution” was created because there wasn’t a scene in the UK, but 3 brothers in Wakefield, West Yorkshire was already doing what they were looking for. The Cribs were the underdogs everybody championed. The Jarman brothers have always kept it DIY, done it their way and never sold out, even at their peak they’d still carry their own equipment and travel in their little van. Q Magazine hailed The Cribs as “the biggest cult band in the UK” in 2008 and they have continued with that mantra throughout their career.
Way back in 1994, 14-year-old twins brothers Gary and Ryan formed their first band, Wrinkle with a couple of friends from school. They wrote songs inspired by Dinosaur Jnr., after drifting apart from their school friends when they started college they got another drummer in but their goal was to be a band of brothers, they just had to wait for Ross who is 4 years younger.
In the summer of 2001, the twins would record rough demos at home (self-taught musicians and producers). By autumn Ross was old enough, Ryan and Gary practically forced him to play the drums and molded Ross into the drummer they wanted him to be and The Cribs were ready to take on the world, unaware of what was about to happen with The Strokes and The Stripes, they weren’t jumping on a trend, they weren’t fitting in, they were on their own and doing what they loved.
While all 3 brothers were working in a toilet roll factory the band left their bedroom in early 2002 and moved into Springtime Studios, a large space in Wakefield where they wrote, rehearsed and recorded what they had written at night, after work. The studios would be rented out to other bands during the day to cover costs.
On weekends they would host parties at Springtime, which would often last the whole weekend, fans would jump on the Megabus and sleep on the floor while the likes of The Paddingtons and 10,000 Things would turn up and a community began to form.
The band was yet to play a gig and there was a line-up they wanted to be on at The Leadmill, down the road in Sheffield. Ryan hand-delivered the one-and-only CD demo they had, which started with Another Number to the promoter who liked it and saw potential in the band but he was too busy managing another band but called Ryan to see if he could pass it on to others. While taking exams at college they received a phone call from Virgin Records who had heard this demo from the guy at The Leadmill. Labels were searching for a UK equivalent of The Strokes and The White Stripes and The Cribs ticked the box.
Within 6 weeks the band had booked their first London show, word of this demo had spread without the band even realising, the room was packed with industry types. They had just finished college but they were still working in the factory, their dream was to leave Wakefield and after that gig they were given the opportunity to do so as they were offered a publishing deal from Chrysalis that night.
The deal allowed them to quit their jobs, tour for 18 months and buy equipment. Their dream was coming true and they would have happily done it for free. Once the publishing deal was signed they were then being hounded by labels and found themselves regularly playing industry showcase gigs in London, the initial interest was from major labels who they had no desire to sign with.
Ryan had stumbled across The Strokes Modern Age EP when he had to nip into HMV to get change for the bus but it was their label mates, The Moldy Peaches who he was a bigger fan of so he rang Rough Trade and invited James Endeacott to one of their London shows. He attended but they chose to sign with Wichita Recordings because they got on well with them, however they had to wait for over a year as Ross was under 18 (they would have had to redo the contracts if they’d have signed when he was under 18 which would have cost money for legal fees and these guys are thrifty). Before signing the deal they recorded their debut album so that they were ready to go once Ross was old enough.
The band was a little frustrated with the release, feeling that it should have come out earlier. It slowly gained a following, the label was pushing them to record a second album but they were keen to tour. Without the backing of the label for live shows, they did it themselves. None of them were particularly clued up when it came to technology so once they had a minute to check out their own website they were surprised how active their forum was and discovered they had fans around the world.
Instead of going down the usual route of booking a tour, they put a message on the forum asking fans to put them on, and they’d play pretty much anywhere as long as their costs were covered. Coming from a small town like Wakefield they understood how important it was when a band played there instead of the typical cities and it was these places that built the band up and became part of the community. It was as DIY as it could get.
Unbeknown to them, the debut album had also gained a following in London too so they started playing in that scene with the likes of The Paddingtons, who they had become friends with when they visited Hull as well as bonding with Dominic Masters and The Others 853 Community who shared the same ethics.
The bands' second album, The New Fellas, mostly written on tour (they were playing 250 gigs a year) was released in July 2005. It had 4 top 40 singles (many of the fans they’d met playing in the small towns helped them). The album still had the low-fi sensibilities of the debut but The New Fellas was more polished and came with the structure that set them apart from the indie bands rebelling against pop.
youtube
If the shift between the debut and The New Fellas was big, there was a huge leap for third album, Men’s Needs, Women’s Needs, Whatever which again saw the brother pen great tunes with big hooks and sing-along moments at their gigs which were getting bigger on each tour (but they launched the album by returning the tiny venues, which were chaotic and mayhem). This album, produced by Franz Ferdinand frontman Alex Kapranos gave the brothers an opportunity to work with one of the heroes, Lee Ranaldo from Sonic Youth who sings on Be Safe. Another big moment for The Cribs came in 2008 when they became a quartet as former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr joined the band for four years and played on Ignore the Ignorant, their first album to go in top 10.
youtube
While many bands softened their sound for the radio, The Cribs haven’t and this attitude has helped them continue to keep their old fans and find new ones with each album that has come. They discovered that they had signed a bad record deal, without having a lot of money, they did the legal stuff themselves but it tested them, they questioned if it was worth it, they considered splitting up as they weren’t touring or recording for the first time since their teens. Then, ‘the nicest man in rock’ Dave Grohl offers them encouragement, and his studio, the journey continued and they recorded an album (Night Network) and in 2022 they rereleased their first 3 albums.
You can’t stop the Jarman brothers.
Leeds
Just up the road from The Cribs there was a wave of new and eclectic bands coming out of Leeds in 2005. Kaiser Chiefs, Black Wire, iForward Russia!, 10,000 Things and The Pigeon Detectives (along with a load of less significant acts) didn’t sound like one another, didn’t really play together, share a fanbase or a dream (but they all (pretty much) seemed to get along with, and champion The Cribs. The NME got their pun game into action and created another scene, New Yorkshire (which was pretty much Leeds and The Cribs). Kaiser Chiefs have gone on to become the only real survivors from Leeds.
Tom Greatorex (Black Wire) “I moved to Leeds at the tail end of 1999 to study graphic design at what was then known as Leeds Met University. It could have been any city or metropolitan area; growing up in a small town in Derbyshire effectively rendered almost all cities as some sort of cultural omphalos in my mind. I'd read the NME and Melody Maker every Wednesday and read about all these groups who I idolised playing places like Newcastle, Glasgow, Manchester, Bristol, Liverpool, Sheffield....fucking, Chester - you get the point - they might as well have been taking place under the sea for a young person with zero money in a deindustrialised village called Somercotes.
So, working towards 'getting-the-fuck-out' was top priority and my means of empowerment was picking any university that did a graphic design course and running at it head-first in the hope they'd let me in.
Leeds was a revelation: not only could I buy tickets to see someone like Idlewild or CAY, but there were people I spoke to in the pub who were actually in bands themselves! It makes me sound like some sort of redneck hick but this was my first experience of people actually doing the whole DIY-punk thing that I'd coveted since my early teens.
There were a hell of a lot of Post-Rock/Mathrock bands and every one of them was 100% pig-shite boring but I went to see them because they were there and it was something I'd never before had access to.
A few years later when we started PIGS it wasn't necessarily in opposition to the utilitarian aesthetics of that scene...but it provided a good foundation. There's a big thing made of talking down influence in British society so let's not do that; PIGS was very influential in Leeds. It provided a brand new space for a brand new taste. Well, sort of. The 3 years pre-millennium were filled with creators and media of all kinds designing itself for a pioneering new era and when it came the mainstream decided to act paradigmatically and double-down on guitar, bass, drums. vocals and practiced indifference. BUT, there were 18 months where everything was vying for main place. Electroclash was seemingly as popular as garage rock, just as UK garage was seemingly as popular as punk rock. The point I'm trying to make is that PIGS played it all regardless of genre and anyone with any REAL sense of futurism got on board with that. Bands formed at PIGS, fanzines got written at PIGS, people stole cameras from Uni to start their photography careers because they felt the need to capture this 'thing' that was happening.
Mainly though it was just a load of kids getting fucked on vodka and smacky pills (Ketamine was at least 2 years away at this point) and getting off with each other. As much as it did give space for people to forge their own creative paths let's not paint it as some den of post-nut clarity school of academia - no one was sat in the corner reading Sartre...apart from this one lad who I won't name but everyone thought he was a cunt anyway. We put on A.R.E. Weapons for fuck's sake. Kids nowadays need to know how bloody cool that was.
I do have to make an important point though, PIGS wasn't at the forefront of all this radical shift in Leeds: Dan Lomax ran a night at a tiny venue in a shopping centre called The Basement and in the Spring of 2001 myself and a small handful of other pals (Nick Hodgson, Nick Scott/Narcsville, Dom Ord, Lisa Harker, Ricky Wilson) would go there on a Thursday. It was dead because all the students would be away for a month at Easter, but Dan had started to play all this new music: Fischerspooner, Miss Kitten and The Hacker, The White Stripes, The Strokes, The Streets etc. I can't impress enough the point that NOWHERE in Leeds was playing this music at the start of 2001.
By the Autumn of 2001 we realised that loads of other cities around the country had all had the same idea when we did. That idea we all had was: just try and copy Trash.
Kaiser Chiefs became SO huge (and deservedly so) that they sort of BECAME Leeds. I don't think the spotlight really stayed on Leeds because of Kaiser Chiefs, it was more like the spotlight followed them and they were Leeds made corporeal. The rest of the country/world didn't need to know what Leeds was because in their experience they were looking at Leeds on the stage right there.
I tell you something though: If it was a spotlight which gave bands from Leeds a platform then there should have been a nationwide fucking blackout before it shone on The Pigeon Detectives.”
Kaiser Chiefs
It felt like Leeds 5-piece, Kaiser Chiefs left the indie scene quicker than they were in it. One minute they were breaking through with catchy indie disco floor fillers, Oh My God and I Predict A Riot, supporting The Killers, dressed in garms from Blue Rinse, the next minute they’d be A-listed on Radio 1 and selling out arenas themselves. It didn’t take long for them to lose their cool factor while local pals, The Cribs, Blackwire and 10,000 Things oozed it. It might have looked effortlessly when they moved into the mainstream but they did have to work hard for it.
Kaiser Chiefs’ story begins at school when they started playing rock tunes together, the line-up, the name and sound changed numerous times. They finally settled on the name Parva in 2000 which saw Ricky Wilson front the band, Whitey on guitar, Simon Rix on bass, keyboardist Peanut and Nick Hodgson on drums.
Nick, Peanut and Simon have been mates since they were 11 when they were in the same class at school. In 1996 Simon and Peanut would leave Leeds for uni while Nick stuck around and met Ricky and Whitey. The trio would go on to form Runston Parva which would become Parva when Simon and Peanut returned to Leeds in 2000.
The band recorded 1 album as Parva, 22, it was set to come out in June 2003 but Mantra Recordings, who was releasing it closed down. This could have been the perfect time for the lads to down tools and get a “proper job” but they had a rebrand. Kaiser Chiefs were born, named after Leeds United footballer Lucas Radebe's old team, Kaizer Chiefs.
Bands who have had a record deal and failed are often looked at as damaged goods by other labels so Kaiser Chiefs became a brand new band and pretended to be younger than they were. The first song they wrote as Kaiser Chiefs was Modern Way, the start of the big hits that can be heard on their debut album, Employment released on B-Unique Records in March 2005. There was a lot of hype around the band within the industry on the strength of these potentially chart-topping singles. In a year they went from their day jobs (Ricky was an art teacher) to selling out large venues.
youtube
Ricky sang with a Yorkshire dialect with lyrics about real-life, relatable situations. I Predict A Riot is about the scenes they’d see outside Majestic at 3am on a Saturday.
Kaiser Chiefs and The Cribs had become good mates over the years, often supporting one another despite the fact that Kaiser Chiefs wanted to be part of the mainstream while The Cribs avoided it like the plague. 2007 wasn’t just a pivotal year for The Cribs, Kaiser Chiefs had a strong one too as they outdid Employment with the follow-up, Yours Truly, Angry Mob which went straight in at no.1. Not only did they have a huge album, lead single Ruby is their only song to top the UK Singles Chart.
Since then the band have come-and-gone, then they would return bigger. The departure of drummer and songwriter Nick in 2012 could have been the end for them but Ricky Wilson joined a minor celeb for a moment when he was a judge on The Voice for 3 series’ and their next album topped the charts. Each release comes with arena tours but their early hits are still what the people want to hear.
Black Wire
Another player in the Leeds scene was Black Wire who was more electro punks than indie. They were a band ahead of their time, they would have fit into the nu rave scene, if they hadn’t already faded out.
They formed in 2002 after school friends Dan and Si moved from Middlesborough to Leeds for uni. The pair had been obsessed with music for years, they’d tried to do something in Middlesborough together but Dan was too shy to perform.
Si had some experience in bands while studying music at college as Dan started to gain confidence at art school, when they arrived in Leeds it was like a new world for them. Si bought a drum machine with which they started to write songs with.
Tom “I first met Dan and Si at a gig at The Rocket (R.I.P). It was March 4th, 2002, and 'The Tour With No Name' had tipped up which was mega exciting as it consisted of 80's Matchbox B-Line Disaster, The Parkinsons and Ikara Colt.
Along with Nick Scott/Narcsville we were the only ones at the front dancing. I can never quite figure out why that was, Leeds wasn't known for stand-offish crowds at gigs like London is, there were plenty of people there even though it was in the smaller gig room of The Cockpit. There's the possibility that I'm remembering it incorrectly but I highly doubt that. You know that scene in 24 Hour Party People where The Sex Pistols play the Lesser Free Trade Hall and all these soon-to-be luminaries slowly, individually, rise from their seats and begin to dance, soon to go home that night and all form their own bands? Well it was nothing like that.
But, I DID meet them that night and I DO remember it just being us dancing and we DID form Black Wire that night.
After the gig we sat in the little bar area and talked about mutual friends we had. Dan and Si mentioned they wanted to form a band (in fact they already had started making some music together under the name Slush Yuppie) and said they needed a bass player. For whatever reason I said "That's me. I'm the only bass player in Leeds you need to talk to"...bear in mind I didn't own a bass guitar and probably didn't know whether you blew into one or wound it up to make it work. But no one had asked me to be in a band before and I was 21 at the time so I needed to do it before I got OLD 2 years later.
They had been recording on a Zoom multi-track which provided the drums and we stuck with that for three reasons,
1: We were incredibly eclectic and saw no reason to not incorporate digital and synthesised sounds in our music,
2: We didn't know anyone rich enough who owned a drum kit and
3: We didn't fucking want a drummer anyway.
Our influences were stuff like The Cramps, The Specials, The Faint, The Birthday Party, LCD Soundsystem etc.”
After a month of forming the band they played at PIGS and their unique set-up of the drum machine made it easier to get gigs as they fitted in perfectly for indie discos as well as supporting bands, thanks to their energy.
It took over their lives, from early on they were either writing, rehearsing or playing live. They constantly toured.
In March 2004 Black Wire released their first single, Attack!Attack!Attack!, the original pressing of 500 copies sold out, as did the second and it was NME’s single of the week. The band had signed to 48 Crash, a record label created for Black Wire which gave them the flexibility to record when they wanted while their manager invested in a van so they could tour when they wanted to. The label founders discovered Black Wire when they played a battle of the bands' competition where they came last.
They toured with The Cribs early on as well as supporting the likes of Bloc Party and The Rapture. They had been booked to play a Queens of Noize night at The Barfly in Camden when they got a phone call to ask if they’d be happy for a last-minute addition to the gig which turned out to be a Libertines reunion after Peter had been released from prison.
Tom “The Cribs were pretty much the only band we felt a direct affinity with, to be honest (along with a great band called Baby Food). Even though we made different music (to a degree) we both felt fundamentally like outsiders. All the sad old nerds from the upstairs-at-the-dog-and-kebab gigs didn't like either of us because we had the gall to get gigs outside of Yorkshire and that was seen as treasonous in the eyes of the Leeds music scene. But that was fine because we didn't care. We wanted to be Black Wire, not Black Wire From Leeds. None of us were from Leeds anyway.”
Their second single, Hard To Love, Easy To Lay was a floor filler, a staple for any decent indie disco. The 7” had made its way over to legendary record shop Amoeba Records in San Fransico. The artwork caught the eye of a manager who was immediately impressed with the band, so much so that he went back to the shop, bought the rest of the copies so nobody else could, called the band and flew to Leeds 2 days later.
youtube
The 3 best mates were pretty low maintenance, the American manager covered their rent for a few months and gave them enough money to record the debut album before flying them out to America for a tour. They covered all the major cities, played iconic venues in New York, including Misshapes but it was a small town, on the outskirts of Chicago where Black Wire made the front page of the local newspaper. Inspired by the American all-age punk shows they ended up playing a high school in the town where their manager was from however parents were concerned with Hard To Love, Easy To Lay, there was police outside ready to arrest Dan if he sang it, instead they got their managers 6-year-old son to say the line. The next day they made the headlines for bringing rock ‘n’ roll to the small town,
Tom “Everything was memorable because all 3 of us were doing this for the first time. Everything we did we shared in it because none of us had experienced it before and that really makes me quite emotional because it honestly felt like us against everything else. At the time a lot of people saw us as very insular and impenetrable as a group but that was because everything we did bonded us closer.
Going to America on tour was us going as a gang. We were 3 people that had defied the odds and made something happen because we felt it HAD to happen. We were a product of our own desire to experience something genuine and weren't afraid of praxis.
But I suppose I should mention stuff like the time we were playing at Vibe Bar on Brick Lane and a man dressed as a priest (or maybe an actual priest) bit Si while we were playing so Si suplexed him through a table, or the time we played a last-minute gig at a High School in Oswego, Illinois for a laugh and got guns pulled on us by the police because we played 'Hard To Love, Easy To Lay' (for some antediluvian reason we were told not to play it because they thought the song was about shagging), or the time we invented the Kaiser Chiefs by causing a riot at a gig in Leeds etc.”
After a handful of attempts, The Cribs final encouraged the band to reform for one of their Cribsmas gigs on the O2 Academy in Leeds in December 2013.
10,000 Things
Leeds-based 6-piece 10,000 Things felt the force of how important the NME was at the time following an album review that practically killed the band.
The band had been creating slick rock ‘n’ roll in the city as they came to life on stage, frontman Sam Riley had a touch of class when he had an audience to perform to. His charm, charisma and love of a few too many beers was the perfect formula for a band in the 2000’s. The energy didn’t come across on the self-titled debut, which the NME gave a 0/10 and that was pretty much it. They got dropped from their label and, just after dreaming of stardom they found themselves behind the bar, instead of getting the rounds in.
youtube
The 10,000 Things dream might have been over but Sam’s time on stage wasn’t. After they split he took the lead role as Ian Curtis in the film Control where he not only played the iconic frontman brilliantly but he got to perform on stage once again, but this time it was Joy Division songs.
iForward Russia!
iForward Russia! was a key part of a Leeds scene thanks to their Dance To The Radio record label which supported a lot of the up-and-coming bands who all had differing sounds, their only thing in common being their location.
iForward Russia! formed in Leeds in 2003, Tom and Rob were in The Black Helicopters, Whiskers was in les Flames, they liked each other's bands but Whiskers wanted to start something new and asked Tom and Rob to join him. Whiskers sister, Katie was a drummer and she completed the line-up.
Whiskers was into the music industry side of it, he handled the admin, booking gigs and trying to get management and a label. They took it seriously from the start, rehearsing 3 times a week. Their previous bands were garage rock and they felt restricted to stick to that sound, with iForward Russia! there weren’t the same boundaries and, as they numbered the song titles in order of writing them you can track their progression. They were influenced by the ‘60’s and ‘70’s as well as newer bands like The Rapture.
They struggled to get a record deal and Whiskers wanted his own label, this gave him the perfect opportunity to do so, and he launched Dance To The Radio to initially release i!Forward Russia! music but it would go to release local talent including iLiKETRiANS, This Et Al and The Pigeon Detectives.
The Pigeon Detectives
While Kaiser Chiefs were receiving commercial success with their debut album, 5 lads from Rothwell, a mining town near Leeds had given up on hopes of becoming footballers and they were bored of their 9-to-5 office jobs so they formed The Pigeon Detectives.
Matt, Oliver, Ryan, Dave and Jimmi have been friends since primary school, none of them were particularly talented when they started out, they began by just playing Oasis and The Beatles songs while they got to grips with the basics. Every Sunday, after a week at work and weekends at indie discos in Leeds they would rehearse and write songs for eight hours with a hangover.
Things started to evolve quickly as they were in the right city at the right time. They signed to Dance to the Radio and were offered a slot supporting Dirty Pretty Things on a UK tour. The 5-piece still had full-time jobs so the label put £10,000 in the bank, they quit their jobs and they were officially rock stars.
Their rise was gradual as they were a live band. Suddenly they started getting radio play, then they were selling out bigger and bigger venues then they were being booked to play festivals. They went on to release 5 albums including Wait For Me in May 2007. The album charted at no.3 but it had leaked 3 weeks earlier (it would have have probably reached no.1 otherwise). The album took the band on tour around the world whilst the NME created conflict between them and local favourites The Cribs.
Unlike a lot of bands at the time, their second album, released 12 months later was also a commercial success, reaching no.5 despite having the pressure of a successful debut. The intense touring took its toll on some members mental health and they had a couple of years off before heading to New York to record Up, Guards and at ‘Em! but they struggled to reach the same numbers as their first 2 albums reached. The band have continued to release albums, tour the UK and spend their summers on the festival circuit.
Hull
The Padddingtons
The Paddingtons, from Hull formed in 2000, they were just a bunch of mates (and brothers) who wanted to hang out and be in a band.
They are the perfect representation of the era, when the teens came across something that excited them they went in deep, making them the most authentic of them all. After falling for The Strokes they deep-dived into ‘70’s punk bands who helped form their sound. Nobody in Hull was doing it and they didn’t realise people in London were doing it until they went there. They looked cool too, they were stylish, not fashionable, they’d go to a charity shop and pick up bits for a few quid. They’d fix leather jackets and ripped jeans with gaffer tape because they were skint. They were a gang who lived for each other as much as they did music.
The 5-piece were exciting, energetic and raw. Fronted by Tom Atkin, who shared the ‘give no shits’ attitude of the Sex Pistols and Josh had the swagger of The Clash’s Mick Jones. They timed the existence brilliantly, sliding into the scene and surrounding themselves around Pete Doherty effortlessly. He was a fan, as was Alan McGee.
Tom Atkin “I went to school with Josh so we kind of knew each other anyway but he was the last one to join. Me and Lloyd were the first ones that kind of started to bond, we went to different schools and met through a friend as he knew we were both into the same sort of music. I was 16, Lloyd and Marv are a couple of years older than me, Josh and Grant.
I was into Oasis, Blur and The Stone Roses and really wanted to be in a band but could barely play guitar. Lloyd’s brother, Grant was a drummer, they’d played in bands together at school, Marv was Lloyd’s friend from school and he’d just started learning guitar. I wanted to be the frontman but I was quite screamy. We’d practice as a 4-piece in my dad's warehouse, after initially playing in my parents' house, but that didn’t last long. It was freezing in the warehouse, we got proper wrapped up, Grant started wearing a duffel coat, he’d drum in and looked like Paddington Bear, which led to the band name as I got a coat too. Then Josh came on board and we felt like a band, we just got on with it. We learned by rehearsing covers of The Strokes, The Hives and Pixies in between reading the NME, talking about music and drinking cheap booze.
Josh’s sister became our tour manager and she bought The Modern Age EP which really changed everything for us and we started looking to New York for inspiration. The New York movement was huge in the UK, after playing Is This It to death I got obsessed with Interpol and Yeah Yeah Yeahs, they were all really cool. The Strokes inspired us in every way, we didn’t really sound like them but we did copy them how we dressed, head-to-toe. We got into a lot of the New York bands because of The Strokes likeTelevision and Guided By Voices. This was the first time we really listened to punk and it organically fed through into what we were doing.
The first proper song we wrote as a band was 21. Me and Lloyd wrote most of the first album, either combining ideas together or bringing individual bits to the table but those songs we nothing without all of us, everyone would chip in. 21 went on to become our first single.
Our first gig was meant to be at Cross Keys, a pub in Cottingham, the village where me and Josh went to school. We turned up dressed like punks, trying to be rock stars, we had a Union Jack flag and they took one look at us and cancelled the gig. We had a hundred people coming to watch us, our mates and family, thankfully the Railway Tavern, down the road let us play.
We kept playing in and around Hull for about a year before doing a gig in Scarborough. The Hull scene was really good, once we started to establish ourselves a scene popped off. Indie was massive at the time, every other kid was trying to be in a band. We had some really good bands who should have done better. Music in small towns and cities is so important, the people are so passionate. I live in London now, and we ‘made it’ as a ‘London band’ but Londoner’s are spoilt for choice. Our management, label and friends from the scene were in London but it was so important to play the small places. We gained loyal fans there.”
The online community allowed them to connect with like-minded people from all over the country, particularly the towns like Coventry and Middlesbrough, which, like Hull didn’t have a huge scene but there were people wanting to make things happen. Like The Cribs, they would use the message boards to advertise gigs and book tours (including one in campsites across the UK).
youtube
Tom “The north was always good to us, we had a lot of mates in Leeds. We played with Black Wire and The Cribs, we first met The Cribs when I went to see them in Hull and knew they were special, they are still one of my favourite bands. We started to bump into them and play with them more and more. We also had a great relationship with Scotland, we recorded the second album in Glasgow so we were there a few months.
We were supporting The IV’s, fronted by Scarborough Steve who’d been in The Libertines on our first gig outside of Hull. He invited us to our first London gig, we got our equipment and jumped on a train, the gig was at a squat in Kings Cross with Portuguese punks, it was chaotic. That’s where it started. We got invited to play with Pete at Wolfman’s flat in Gunter Grove, however it didn’t really go to plan as the police shut it down before we played, we grabbed our equipment, jumped in the car and headed home but this is where we first met Pete who fell in love with us. We started posting on .org which got us more London gigs, there was a huge community in the London scene, that’s what made it special, so huge. One night, at The Rhythm Factory supporting The Libertines was where Alan McGee first saw us and wanted to put out 21 as a single on Poptones. It was about 3am when I came off stage, Alan grabbed me and said he wanted to sign us and put a single out. The only version we had was a really rough demo so we quickly rerecorded it. It was released on CD and 7”, charting at no.47 selling all 1000 copies without any marketing, it was all organic. The success of 21 and Alan’s relationship with Mercury led to our 5-album record contract.”
Signing the record deal was exciting but for lads who’d never had much money, getting the advance in the bank account was a real high for them, and they celebrated in rock ‘n’ roll fashion, ending up getting arrested after “play-fighting” with each other in a hotel room after a gig in Edinburgh. They were young, so young Tom had to get his parents to sign the contract. They had no management or guidance from anybody, they were essentially putting their career in the hands of a major corporation who don’t care about people but at the time they were young and having fun.
The Paddingtons weren’t a band in it for the money and in the very early days they were naive with the business side of the industry. They were part of the last era of bands who signed a record deal where the record company would give them a decent advance to pay for everything which would be recouped in record sales, like a loan.
An advance sounds great but it has to pay wages for band members, management, agents, accountants, lawyers, equipment, rehearsal space, recording time, distribution, music videos, artwork and pretty much anything else. Money from gigs would pay for the tour bus/hotels, touring crew/roaders, the rider would be included in the budget and band members would get a daily allowance, for The Paddingtons, they each got £20 a day. Money that was leftover from the tour would go into the band bank accountant and be divided amongst members, Tom’s mum looked after their finances.
Having money, being on tour with fans who paid to see them, the lads were living their best life. They felt invincible although they felt a bit overlooked when bands such as The Enemy, The Fratellis and The View would support them and a few weeks later there’d be topping charts.
Alan McGee was good friends with producer Owen Morris from the Oasis days, he had a reputation for being a bit mad and The Paddingtons had started to get a party reputation too. The label had concerns about them working together for the debut album so they let him produce their second single, Panic Attack, it all went smoothly, it was their highest-charting single at no.21.
They got the green light to work together for the album, First Comes First and from day 1, it was wild. The studio was in the middle of nowhere, they met Owen at the nearest pub, also in the middle of nowhere and he put his credit card behind the bar. Every day, before recording, which wouldn’t start until the evening there’d be in the pub. There’s not a sober note on the album and Owen had some out-there tactics to get the most out of the band. When Tom was doing vocals for the first song none of the other band members were allowed in the studio, he’d get both Tom and himself to snort a load of pills then make Tom do vocals over and over again while Owen threw up in a bucket. Each day they’d wake up at 4pm, after the pub they would be in the studio from 7pm and recording until 5am. He’d get into the boys' heads, whether that was with drink and drugs, playing Green Day’s American Idiot on repeat or mentally torturing them, he sent Marv crazy and he had to go home. It worked. The album gushes with energy.
Tom “We recorded the debut album with Owen Morris, he was an interesting guy to work with, bonkers. We were big fans of Owen as he’d produced some of our favourite albums when we were younger so we were excited for the opportunity. It was a no-brainer. All of the rumours were true, as soon as we started working with him we knew it was going to be a rollercoaster, it was wild. He was a bit of a madman, in the best possible way. I was 18, it was fun.”
Ahead of the release of the debut album Marv had to pull out of the tour following a serious injury to his arm during a drunken night out. Stu from Kill City, who had supported the band before stepped in. Stu was a fan of the band too and he was welcomed in like he was one of the close-knit gang. Stu would go on to replace Marv a few years later on after the band briefly split up for a couple of months before reforming without Marv, Stu felt like he was part of the band but always knew it was Marv’s baby. After years of Marv not talking to the band, they all settled their differences and on the 2017 reunion tour both Marv and Stu played together.
The expectation from all was that The Paddingtons would replicate The Libertines but Owen’s tactics gave them the anger and energy to create a punk record, it surprised everyone, particularly the NME who gave First Comes First a positive review when it was released in October 2005.
youtube
The record label chose Sorry as a single but the album version is almost 5 minutes long, it had to be re-recorded and the label sent in another iconic producer in Stephen Street, famed for his work with Blur. They’d go from recording with Oasis’s producer to Blur’s. It was a very different experience too as Stephen works 9am - 5pm and the single version is much more concise than the one on the album which lacked a little guidance.
Touring was essential for a band like The Paddingtons and the community aspect was clear amongst bands and fans as you’d often see similar bands share line-ups. They supported bands who were a couple of leagues above them such as Babyshambles and The Cribs and they’d know that a good amount of the crowd would be fans of theirs. At their peak The Paddingtons could sell out 1000-capacity venues in London such as Koko and ULU but they also had a following of punks in Japan.
Tom “We were buzzing from the first album, when I listen to it now it could have been slower but I guess that was what we were doing. The energy told the story of what was going on in our lives, everything was happening so fast, we didn’t have a minute off. Even when we went home we still partied or rehearsed, there was no rest and you can hear that on the album. We were satisfied with how it sold and it kept us going to a second album, which I still really like, it was just a very complicated time, we felt a bit rushed.
It would have been nice to see how it would have gone with an indie label but we were just excited that Mercury wanted to sign us. We were such young kids, making those big decisions at 18, I didn’t know what I was doing. We didn’t have a proper manager, it all happened very quick.
Me and Marv had an altercation, a bit of a bust-up which involved most of the band when we were on tour in Europe, it was a sad time. Touring with best friends takes its toll. Being in a band isn’t easy, we were living the dream but it was quite difficult. We love each other, me and Marv are super tight now but there was a few years where we didn’t really talk which is weird looking back.”
Ahead of recording the second album the band went into The Charlatans recording studio, Big Mushroom in Cheshire where they recorded 5 tracks which cost them £16,000, they didn’t really understand how much it was going to be and ended up not using any of the songs.
In 2007, after delays they moved to Glasgow to record No Mundane Options with Tony Doogan, the experience was very different to the first as he was sober.
Tom “We had a bunch of songs which we planned for a second album, we were touring constantly. Everything was going so fast, it was a bit of a blur, we were wasted a lot and got carried away with partying, touring and having fun, not concentrating on a second record so when it came down to writing and recording the second album it was a bit of a rush. Midway through recording album we got dropped and released it ourselves which was hard work, things are easier when you’ve got a team behind you.”
The bands' second album, No Mundane Options was released in November 2008 on their own record label, Mama Bear (JD Sports invested in the band and sold records in their shops) but it was too late. It only took 2 months to record but they took too long to get into the studio. A lot of the criticism of the album was that it already sounded dated, if they had released it 18 months earlier it would have hit the mark, there were so many bands releasing albums at the time it was easy to become irrelevant and even though there was progression between First Comes First and the follow-up, it was left behind.
No Mundane Options was followed up by The Lady Boy Tapes in April 2010 which saw the legendary Adam Green join them on lead single, Lady Boy.
After The Paddingtons, Josh moved to New York and started Skaters whose debut album deserved more success. The Hull lads have had brief reunions but with them scattered around the country (and New York) and having ‘proper jobs’ it can be hard to schedule dates in. They are no longer the youthful, energetic lads they once were, their 2017 reunion tour took it out of them.
Tom “There was plenty of highlights, touring in Japan, it’s like another world, so interesting, nice people, respectful, it’s great place, I felt like we’d ‘made it’. Playing Leeds and Reading Festival, we went as kids so it was great. Recording was great too.”

Also: as soon as I finished ep 1, my freshly 18 year old sib came home, and I shared that I watched the first episode, explained what it was about, etc. And the kid just stares at me for a minute before going "honestly, I thought Twin Peaks was a comedy, so I'm kind of confused."
Okay I have FINALLY started Twin Peaks. Been meaning to, but David Duchovny pushed me over the edge.

A curtain call
So, there might be a season 4 of Twin Peaks, or there might not be. If there is no season 4, then I just witnessed one of the most depressing, and one of the most audacious series finales ever.
Cooper goes back to stop Laura’s murder from even happening, therefore cancelling out the entire series, and then goes further and cancels himself out in the process. It’s a bold move for a tv show that was so incredibly influential, and twice changed the nature of tv, to erase itself. Twin Peaks as we know it never happened. It’s a big middle finger, and on an intellectual level I think it’s brilliant but on an emotional level it’s crushing.
Like every fan who watched it I am still processing it, two days later. The first night after watching it I slept poorly, dreamt of Twin Peaks and every time I woke up I was immediately thinking about the finale. I think my brain was trying to process all the puzzles in my sleep. I can’t recall being effected by an episode of tv so much before.
If there is going to be a season 4, then I have some thoughts, questions, speculations. Here goes: Did Cooper go back in time, or is this an alternate reality? The Fireman/Giant tells Coop in episode 1 “Remember 430. Richard and Linda. Two birds, one stone”. Cooper becomes Richard, and Diane becomes Linda. Why give Richard the same name as Bad Coop’s son? Is our Coop inside Richard Horne in this alternate reality? Richard Horne was zapped by electricity at the co-ordinates given to Bad Coop by Philip Jeffries. There was no body- perhaps he didn’t die but was sent to this new reality by the electricity, same as Good Coop. It might explain why RichardCoop’s personality seemed to be an unsettling mix of Good Coop, Bad Coop, and Dougie. Diane/Linda seemed to vaguely remember something of Bad Coop also. Can someone remind me- were the co-ordinates on the librarian’s torso also the ones for where Richard Horne died? Was it established where Major briggs was “hiding” when Bill Hastings and the librarian found him in the other dimension? Could Briggs have been in this alternate reality, or was it the white lodge? I can’t remember. And perhaps Audrey is also in this alternate reality. She also doesn’t seem to know who she is, or where she is going.
I’m wondering if the alternate dimension was part of the series all along. Some of the stuff that happened at the roadhouse seemed unrelated to anything else in the plot. Someone posted a video of the end of Ep. 15 where the scene of Dougie being electrocuted had exactly the same timing as the girl, Ruby, at the Roadhouse who crawled along the floor and started screaming. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZJ__doruW4 (But then, it could also just be how David Lynch paces many scenes) Anyway, is this alternate dimension running alongside the season 3 Twin Peaks storyline?

Do you have any headcanons for T4T Sister x Nihil where Nihil is pregnant? (not with Copia necessarily maybe him and Sister got freaky and made a demon baby)
Specifically imagining them both from the KTGG vid bc they are peak gender
In my personal t4t au Nihil and Impera have all the Emeritus babies and Caridnal together, but Cardi is a whole story on its own, if this gets attention I’ll explain more.
TW: ‼️NSFW, 18+ only please‼️mentions of dysphoria, pregnancy dysforia, depression, mention Su!c!dal thoughts and tendencies. Read with caution.
•Impera is definitely jealous that Nihil is pregnant, but Nihil tries hard to affirm Impera, and make sure she feels as loved as possible.
•Nihil loves taking baths to ease himself, he was pregnant with twins. On his first pregnancy. He always rubs his Tum and hums made up hymns to see what will get his little ones to kick.
•Impera and Nihil are attached at the hip, Impera loves to baby Nihil, and go clothes shopping for the babes while Nihil hates it and would rather stay home (he will faun over the onesies and booties while he puts them away though..don’t tell)
•While Nihil was pregnant with Terzo, his cravings were the worst. Also wanting to eat everything he wasn’t supposed to. He got caught a couple times, but nothing too detrimental. Impera would always give him a side eye.
•Nihils Dysphoria gets really bad when his belly starts to become unhideable. He started becoming very depressed, and felt that he wouldn’t be the man he wanted to be. He always feared his body wouldn’t return to its original state or something close to it. Especially having twins the first go, Nihil was terrified.
•Impera would cradle Nihils stomach in her hands while she thrusted into Nihils warmth. She could feel her tip pressing into his cervix, which made her feel overwhelmed, and would cause her to climax unexpectedly.
•Impera was always nervous she wouldn’t make a good mother. She totally watches “how to be a good mom” videos and asks for advice from mom friends.
•when Nihil is ontop, he always works 100% to make Impera feel submissive, just as she would him. Nihil would kiss her chest, tell her how gorgeous she is, and point out his favorite parts of her, calling her his queen, princess.
•Impera enjoys being praised. She wants to feel like a good girl, even while Nihil is swollen with her child.
•They go to every check up appointment together. No if ands or buts about it.
•Primo and Secundo loved snuggling Nihil while he was pregnant. Both of them laying on him while Impera lays under his arm, rubbing his thigh.
•the first time Primo called Nihil “Dada” he literally could have collapsed with excitement.
•Nihil found out they were pregnant with Terzo a week after they renewed their vows. They were married for 5 years, Primo and Secundo were 3. Impera was more excited this time around than before. She felt more involved and invested now knowing more of how to care for Nihil while they worked with their body changes.
•with the time period, their relationship was accepted in the abbey, but it was hard outside and around the world. After Nihils EP came out, he found out they were expecting the twins.
•After Terzo was Born, Nihil had his tubes tied and scheduled consults for gender affirming surgeries. He and Impera agreed they didn’t want anymore kids.

Toronto’s SUN BELOW Take Us on a Cosmonautic Trip for Their Full-Length Debut
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
Album Art by Adam C. Design & Illustration
Though I've spent the majority of my adult life in the United States, I was actually born in Canada. As such, I've been entirely fascinated by the growing heavy music scene over the past 10-20 years in cities like Vancouver, Edmonton, Regina, Whitehorse, Quebec, and Toronto. To the latter we now scatter, converging upon a singular band: SUN BELOW.
This band just gets me high, man. Maybe it's because Jason Craig (guitars, vox), Will Adams (drums), and Garrison Thordarson (bass) have a good feeling for concepts and the musical implications of fantasy. They've been grinding away since at least 2018, releasing three EPs and forging a sound worthy of a bonafide full-length record. Before us: the band's first album, 'Sun Below' (2021) -- a psychedelic doom adventure for our age.
It kicks off with "Chronwall Neanderthal," which grabs us by the shirt right away with its boisterous drumming, hellish fuzz, and reverberating vocals. The lyrics are a bit of an esoteric riddle, painting a picture in three word phrases like "hallowed flame Harvest," "crystal stone Dooman," and (my favorite) "bong and bone Awaken." We featured this track on our recent compilation, 'Doomed & Stoned in Canada (Volume II)' (2021) -- which came out in October. It's one I continue to enjoy, especially in the early mornings when I'm looking for a peppy vibe to carpe diem.
Sun Below continues the chronicles of the "Holy Drifter," a motif that has been central to their work so far. Track number (and indeed, the whole album) elucidates Holy Drifter's nature and motivation.
Ragged drifter walks the holy path Seeking out the ancient herb Gift of sight a curse in stranger's eyes Fear the future yet untold
Shifting down in tempo, we can really appreciate the low-lows of those deliciously downtuned instruments of doom, while the drumming remains strong. Hommages to Dopesmoker are hinted at here and there, especially in the impressive guitar play that seems to tune right into that Matt Pike wavelength, while distinguishing itself with sanguine moments of chill phrasing. Even at a doom's pace, the drumming is meaty and full of heart, something that's not easily accomplished in slower tempos. All three join in unison for an anthemic vocal section in the waning moments:
Wisdom's eyes, burning red Sativa rising from red shed Calling to the peaks of pike Smoke builds up and frees the mind
Ever wondered if doom can dance? Sun Below makes it happen with third track "Shiva Sativa" -- one of three instrumentals on the record, reminiscent of those lively Black Sabbath B-section romps.
Craving a return to the low 'n' slow, the trio conjure "Green Visions" next. The bass generates a dank wah as the guitar croons to the crushing weight of skins and cymbals. The reverb on the vocals reminds me so much of Orchid here.
Green visions What did you see? Green visions What did it mean?
After another instrumental ("Bong Psalm"), Sun Below bring us the off-beat "Kinetic Kief" and a murky "Doom Stick" before summoning their full powers for "Twin Worlds" -- an 18-minute behemoth in two parts that gets very psychedelic. Warning: it's quite easy to get lost in this one! Beginning with a march-like beat, the Holy Drifter trips out and falls into an alternate timeline in history. Explains the band:
By this part in the album’s story, the Drifter has grown fatigued with his lack of understanding of his visions and decides to scale the Chronwall to the peak of his mountain shrine. There, he commences a ritual that creates a rift in space-time, and through the newly created void looming above him, he encounters a future version of himself in the distant future. Through a telepathic link established between them, the Drifter learns that many years from now, the sun is threatening to imminently burn out in the future, and the future Drifter decides to impart this knowledge of impending doom, as well as an enhanced strain of the Sativa herb, to his younger counterpart. Musically, it is the most ambitious track on the record in length and in scope, as it combines groove with the crushing weight of impending doom as well as spaced out vocals which themselves seem to echo across time.
At last, we reach our destination, the aptly titled "Solar Burnout." It's the bluesiest number of the set and my personal favorite (maybe because me and burnout are such close acquaintances).
Light flickers from the smoking star Scorched embers, burning low Depart for worlds of potent green Drifting somewhere in the galaxy
It's got a good share of groove, too. Some will be reminded of the more jaded tracks from Electric Wizard's catalog, all the while cognizant that we have here a talented young crew with a vision uniquely their own. Jason Craig's guitar solo really sings on this one, too, guiding us all the way to the record's rumbling finish.
Look for Sun Below to drop this weekend (pre-order here), which you can hear in the meanwhile as Doomed & Stoned brings you the album's exclusive premiere!
Give ear...
Sun Below by Sun Below
SOME BUZZ
Sun Below is a heavy stoner/doom power trio from Toronto. Playing a signature brand of self-described Sativa rock, a combination of fuzz, volume, and heavy grooves, Sun Below seeks to spread their infectious, rollicking sound to the masses.
Starting as a humble seedling in 2018, the trio formed with a desire to create heavy rock with stoner/doom elements in a groovy Sabbath style, and through constant improvisation, the material is grown organically first with the music and then with the lyrics.
Engaging, extended tracks compiled with a crushing amount of volume touch on topics including cannabis, the occult, Lovecraft, unexplained occurrences, the infiniteness of space and the Holy Drifter. Even at length, each track is an exceptional sonic journey through space and time. Inviting their listeners to get into the groove and the headspace of the music, Sun Below is the perfect combination of a mellow trip with an energetic Sativa boost.
The trio of Jason Craig (guitars/vocals), Garrison Thordarson (bass/backing vocals) and Will Adams (drums/backing vocals) specialize in loose, long burning jams that worship at the altar of tone, riffs, and smoke, but also brim with raw bombastic heavy metal rock to keep the energy up high. Smoke up, tune down, play loud, burnout.
Still relatively new, but reaching towards the light and maturation, Sun Below have been hard at work sharing the stage with the likes of Black Mastiff and Chron Goblin -- releasing three EPs: Black Volume EP (2018), Black Volume EP II (2019), Black Volume EP III (2019), and a music video "Into the Haze." In addition, they were featured on Doomed & Stoned in Canada, Volume 2 (2021). With a new stoner sun set to rise this autumn, the power trio will release their first full-length debut on November 19th to keep the fuzzy momentum going.
The self-titled album has a running time of an hour and ten minutes. It was self-produced, mixed by Will Adams (drums), engineered by Farmer Jesse, recorded at Rival Sound Studios and the album artwork was done by Adam C Design and Illustration.
According to Sun Below, anyone who has been following them through their previous releases will see this record as the final destination on the holy path they have traversed. The concepts and themes present in their past work have now come together fully formed after years of practice.
Fans of big riffs, fuzzed-out guitars, crushing drums, and driving bass will not be disappointed in this record especially those with an interest in Sleep, Electric Wizard, and Red Fang.

I have a list of ~900 albums from 2019 that I still want to eventually listen to / review [IMPOSSIBLE PROJECT ALERT]
For this project (already 125+ releases deep), which is just impossibly daunting and makes me head hurt. IDK how to streamline this process or is any “critic” out there really listening to “all” the good music? It’s impossible I guess... BUT needless to say, these have made this list from an even larger pool of music that I either listened to briefly and immediately dismissed or (gasp!) never even came across my radar (radar = many many music blogs I follow via RSS).
Anyway, because I’ll most likely never get to this (whatever this is, an Xgau parody or something)... Here is the list (please ignore some of my notations/typos):

Pick 5 shows, then answer the following questions, don’t cheat. Tag 10 (or however many) people.
Game of Thrones
Doctor Who
Big Little Lies
Bates Motel
Twin Peaks
1. Who is your favourite character in 2? a real toss up between the eleventh doctor, his beamtiful wife river song, and the thirteenth doctor... clara & twelve are massive comfort characters as well
2. Who is your least favourite character in 1? ROBERT BARATHEON like i love the bobby b memes but then i realise he was my fave’s abuser :)) and of course gregor clegane, ramsay bolton, etc.
3. What is your favourite episode of 4? 2x02 when norma and norman do a musical together <3 it’s one of the few “wholesome” eps of bates where the plot was lulled and summery and lovely
4. What is your favourite season of 5? so far, the first season was basically flawless, but i’m in the middle of the dip in quality from 2x10 onwards... where david lynch’s control was taken away and no one knew what to do
5. Who is your favourite couple in 3? renata x me
6. Who is your favourite couple in 2? eleventh doctor AND HIS WIFE RIVER SONG. amy and rory pond of course. and twelve and clara, again.
7. What is your favourite episode of 1? i stan the fuck out of 2x09, blackwater. it’s just perfect in how the tension is built, the first time we actually get to see (some) of the war of the five kings directly, stannis baratheon is there, joffrey’s in his lannister armour panicking, it’s Cinematic Brilliance.
8. What is your favourite episode of 5? laura palmer’s death reveal episode ofc, 2x07 “lonely souls”
9. What is your favourite season of 2? season five! the ponds and eleven, the best combination. it was the season i grew up on too.
10. How long have you watched 1? maybe a year after it aired - early 2012 when i binged all of it, then binged asoiaf.
11. How did you become interested in 3? honestly @ladycomstock said i would like it TWO YEARS AGO and i didn’t follow it through and then i randomly decided to watch it mostly after seeing laura dern as renata klein and would you know what i adore this show to fucking pieces now.
12. Who is your favourite actor in 4? can’t make me choose between vera farmiga and freddie highmore -- absolute geniuses
13. Which do you prefer, 1, 2, or 5? game of thrones forever, idc what y’all say
14. Which show have you seen more episodes of, 1 or 3 ? well, there’s 8 seasons of got and only 2 of bll...
15. If you could be anyone from 4, who would you be? bruh emma i fucking guess cause she LIVES and has a baby
16. Would a crossover between 3 and 4 work? “the monterey five tries to evade norman bates”
17. Pair two characters in 1 who would make an unlikely but strangely okay couple? i always thought theon x sansa was random but here we are,
18. Overall, which show has the better storyline, 3 or 5? i adore big little lies but i can’t compare it to the show that changed the face of television forever, thank you david lynch for your service
19. Which has the better theme music, 2 or 4? bates doesn’t have an intro so -- but for doctor who with its 23919419 intros, i like twelve’s the best it’s so dramatic
