Wrestlers protest: We have not stepped back, keep supporting us, says Sakshi Malik
Rio Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi posted a video from her Twitter handle, clarifying that they have not given up.
Tumblr media
NEW DELHI: Released late on Sunday night from police detention, the wrestlers are contemplating their next move even as they continued to get support from the sporting fraternity after police action against the top grapplers was unequivocally condemned by many political leaders and sports personalities.
Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Sangeeta Phogat, Sakshi Malik and several others were detained by Delhi police on Sunday when they attempted to move towards the new Parliament building for women’s ‘Mahapanchayat’.
Disturbing videos of police action against elite wrestlers emerged from Jantar Mantar, which will now remain out of bound for them.
The wrestlers are demanding the arrest of WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who they have accused of sexually exploiting women grapplers.
Rio Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi posted a video from her Twitter handle, clarifying that they have not given up.
“Police has filed FIR against us when we have not caused any damage to the public property. They were very cruel with us, one woman (wrestler) was being handled by 20 officers, you can see the videos.”
“We want to inform our supporters, who are waiting for us at Gurdwara (in Ambala) and other places, that we spent this day devising our next strategy. We have not stepped back, the protest will continue. We will let you know our next step, keep supporting us,” she said.
Bajrang, Vinesh, Sangeeta and Sakshi did not take calls as several attempts were made to reach out to them. “We will let you know soon what our next move will be. We are still gathering ourselves. I was released at 11 pm and Bajrang was released around midnight. We are yet to meet at a commonplace. We will soon discuss it,” said one of the team members.
The police, which has filed FIRs against the trio of Bajrang, Vinesh, Sakshi and several others for violation of law and order, has made it clear that they will not allow the wrestlers to return to Jantar Mantar.
Meanwhile, India’s first individual Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra denounced the police action against the top wrestlers, saying the treatment meted out to the grapplers left him “sleepless” and he was “haunted” by the horrifying images.
Unprecedented scenes of police dragging Olympic and world championships medal-winning players, including Sakshi, Vinesh, Punia and Sangeeta Phogat, were witnessed when the wrestlers and their supporters breached the security cordon ahead of their march towards the new Parliament building.
“Last night was sleepless, haunted by the horrifying images of my fellow Indian wrestlers protesting,” tweeted Bindra, even as India’s most successful footballer Sunil Chhetri and former India all-rounder Kapil Dev too criticised the action against the wrestlers.
“It’s high time we establish independent safeguarding measures across sporting organizations. We must ensure that if such situations arise, they are dealt with utmost sensitivity and respect. Every athlete deserves a safe and empowering environment,” added Bindra, the 2008 Beijing Olympics gold medallist in air rifle.
India football captain Chhetri, tweeted, “Why does it have to come down to our wrestlers being dragged around without any consideration? This isn’t the way to treat anyone. I really hope this whole situation is assessed the way it should be.”
Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan said a solution to the issue should be found immediately. “I’m so sad to see the visuals of our Athletes. Please solve this ASAP,” Pathan tweeted.

Dragged and detained, wrestlers in no mood to relent
Incidentally, Sakshi, her husband Satyawart Kadian and a few others met Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday evening demanding the arrest of Brij Bhushan.
Tumblr media
CHENNAI/NEW DELHI: The scenes and their shrill cries sent shock waves across the sporting world. Olympic and world medallists were dragged and detained by Delhi police just a few kilometres away from where Prime Minister Narendra Modi was inaugurating the new Parliament building in the national capital on Sunday morning.
Country’s top wrestlers including Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Bajrang Punia, Rio Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik and two-time World Championships medallist Vinesh Phogat were trying to march towards the new Parliament to organise ‘Mahila Samman Mahapanchayat’ when they were stopped midway and were being forcibly taken to separate locations from Jantar Mantar where they had pitched in their tents for the protest that ran into Day 36. There was quite a commotion while removing Sakshi, Vinesh and Sangeeta Phogat.
It all started when the protesting wrestlers were in no mood to back out. They breached the security cordon while trying to move towards the new Parliament. Top official sources told this newspaper that the Delhi police are going to initiate legal action against the wrestlers and register an FIR under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for allegedly creating a ruckus around Jantar Mantar.
The Delhi police also uprooted the tents where these wrestlers were staying since they resumed their protest on April 23 demanding the arrest of the sidelined Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Other belongings of the wrestlers like cots, mattresses, coolers and fans were also removed from the place.
While the move was apparently aimed at ending the ongoing sit-in protest, the wrestlers insisted via social media posts that the protest will continue. “Our protest hasn’t ended. Once we are released from police detention, we will start ‘satyagraha’ at Jantar Mantar. Not dictatorship but this country will see women wrestlers’ satyagraha now,” tweeted Sakshi and Sangeeta Phogat, Bajrang’s wife.
Incidentally, Sakshi, her husband Satyawart Kadian and a few others met Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday evening demanding the arrest of Brij Bhushan. Independent MLA from Charkhi Dadri, Sombir Sangwan, acted as a mediator. “We prepared a seven-point demand letter for the meeting. But wrestlers demanded the immediate arrest of Brij Bhushan even as the Home Minister told them that he will be arrested in one month after police file the chargesheet in court as per law,” Sangwan told this daily.

Priyanka backs protesting wrestlers, says BJP's arrogance is "crushing voices"
Her remarks came after India's top wrestlers on Tuesday intensified their protest demanding the arrest of WFI chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
Tumblr media
NEW DELHI: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday slammed the government over the protests by top wrestlers here, and asked whether it wants to save the culprits in the matter.
The Congress general secretary also said that the pleas of the sportspersons, who enhance the country’s honour were being ignored, and asserted that “when the arrogance of a party and its leaders” is sky high then such voices are crushed.
Her remarks came after India’s top wrestlers on Tuesday intensified their protest against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and asserted that they won’t leave the protest site until the WFI president, who is facing sexual harassment charges, is arrested.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued notices to the Delhi government and others on a plea by seven women wrestlers alleging non-registration of an FIR over their sexual harassment allegations against the WFI president, saying these are “serious allegations” requiring its consideration.
Expressing support for the protesting wrestlers, Gandhi said that sportspersons are the pride of the country as when they win medals despite all the difficulties and after working tirelessly, “their victory is our victory” and the whole country smiles.
“The victories of women players are bigger than the rest. They are sitting on the road next to Parliament with tears in her eyes. No one is listening to their complaint against exploitation that has been going on for a long time,” Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.
“These girls with strong arms and pure hearts believed the government when it told them that there would be an inquiry. But the investigation did not happen. The question of punishment did not arise at all. Does the government want to save the culprits?” the Congress leader said.
Whose pressure is there on the Delhi Police, Gandhi asked.
She also questioned why Opposition leaders are being questioned by the same police on hearing the pain of a girl during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, but the pleas of the sportspersons who enhance the country’s honour are ignored.
Her remarks were in reference to a Delhi Police team last month querying Congress leader Rahul Gandhi at his residence over his remark made during the Bharat Jodo Yatra that “women are still being sexually assaulted.”
The police team had asked him to provide information about the “victims” to take up their complaints.
“When the arrogance of a party and its leaders touches the sky, then such voices are crushed. Let’s support these sisters of ours. It is a matter of honour for the country,” Gandhi asserted.
The wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, have also alleged that the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief is now resorting to strong-arm tactics and trying to break the “victims” by issuing threats and offering bribes.
Former Haryana Chief Minister and senior Congress Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Congress leader Udit Raj and CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat, who was stopped from joining the stir by the wrestlers in January, were welcomed by the wrestlers, at the protest site on Tuesday, a day after they had sought support from all quarters.

Brij Bhushan Singh arrested over alleged sexual abuse
Tumblr media
Indian wrestlers protested in Delhi on Sunday, demanding the arrest of the chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), Brij Bhushan Singh for allegedly sexually harassing female wrestlers. The female wrestlers also accused some officials of the federation of sexually abusing them, BBC reported. They first staged protests and called them in January after the government promised to investigate and address their grievances. The protests in January had attracted international reactions, but the WFI had denied all the allegations made by the wrestlers, including that of sexual misconduct. As the protests continued, the government asked Singh to step aside for a few weeks and inaugurated a panel to supervise the federation’s activities. However, BBC said there was no clarity on the status of his position as the WFI website still lists Singh as its president. The Indian Olympic Association also set up a committee to investigate the allegations against Singh, who is a lawmaker and politician from the governing Bharatiya Janata Party. The committee submitted its report in April but its findings have not been revealed yet. Singh has denied the allegations. In a protest they resumed yesterday, the female wrestlers demanded the government make public the report submitted by the panel that investigated the allegations. Their male counterparts also joined them in the demonstrations. On Sunday night, Vinesh Phogat, a two-time World Championship medallist, tweeted a photo of the protesters sleeping in the open. “From podium to footpath! Under the open sky at night in the hope of justice,” she tweeted. Olympic medalist Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik were also part of the protests. Phogat had alleged in January that at least 10 female wrestlers had confessed to her that they were sexually exploited by Singh. She had also said that they would not compete in international tournaments unless Mr Singh was removed from the post Read the full article

SC issues notice to Centre on pleas against blocking BBC documentary on PM Modi
The Supreme Court on Friday directed the Centre to produce the original record of its decision to take down tweets circulating links to the controversial BBC documentary ‘India: The Modi Question’ on the 2002 Gujarat riots.
A bench of justices Sanjiv Khanna and MM Sundresh gave three weeks’ time for the Centre to file its response and placed the matter for hearing in April. The court was dealing with two petitions - one filed jointly by MP Mahua Moitra, journalist N Ram and advocate Prashant Bhushan, and the second by advocate ML Sharma. PKBNews
On January 21, the Centre issued directions for blocking multiple YouTube videos and Twitter posts sharing links to the controversial documentary.
The court declined to be dragged into the issue of students being punished for airing the documentary, saying the proceedings before it will confine to legal arguments.
"We are issuing notices. Counter affidavit be filed within three weeks. Rejoinder within two weeks after that," the bench said.
The matter is listed for the next hearing in April.
The petition has also sought quashing of “all orders directly or indirectly censoring” the information including those shared on social media.
The plea claimed that the BBC documentary has “recorded facts” which are also “evidence” and can be used to further the cause of justice for the victims.

Emergence Of Debt-Free Essar Indicates Group’s Strong Foundations
Essar finally paid off his loan. For more than $2 billion, the Group sold three infrastructure assets—two ports and a power plant—to Arcelor Mittal Nippon Steel India. End of a difficult phase, tweeted Prashant Ruia, Shashi Ruia's eldest son and director of Essar Capital. Looking back, I'm pleased that we were able to meet our obligations and monetize some of our top-tier assets. Moreover, the start of a new chapter.
Essar Group was not erected on sand, to start with. People who were writing Essar obituaries did not consider the underlying assets; they simply saw debt figures. The Group built quality asset after excellent asset using bank advances and loans. Aditya Mittal, a descendant of Arcelor Mittal, made a statement at the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2018 that stands as a powerful testament to Essar's project quality. In the form of Essar Steel, the Ruias, according to Mittal, had constructed a steel plant of the highest calibre with enormous room for growth.
Second, the Ruia people possess steely nerves. The Ruia family stood their ground when many other business families (including Neeraj and Brij Bhushan Singal, Venugopal Dhoot, and Vijay Mallya) buckled under the weight of their mounting debts. They stayed put and didn't give up. Instead, they built a fresh, prosperous, debt-free Essar. They simultaneously started new businesses, improved existing ones, and sold off infrastructure assets to pay back bank loans while working on two different fronts.
