Late Spring and a slow dance. They’re learning each other in increments.

Dusk is just starting to hit its leisurely stride when Nate, bouquet-handed and lightly cologned, climbs up the staircase of the Ontario Village Apartment Complex with a flutter of anticipation beneath his ribs that makes him feel remarkably human. Or rather like he’s chasing the dregs of humanity.

He threads his free hand through what wavy strands the customary leather strip didn’t catch at the nape of his neck as he goes. His fingers used to gravitate to a necktie and before that a cravat, but modern simplicities in fashion have stalled this habit. When was the last time someone he courted had stoked such a nervous reaction in him? (Years long past. Maybe even decades. He doesn’t disregard the time like Ava, but he is finding it harder to quantify as it tolls by.) And when, he notes with some amount of self-deprecation, did he start using the long length of his legs to skip steps in excitement? Nathaniel Sewell is not someone who normally abandons propriety and skips up stairs.

In the locked closet of an uninhabited, but still pristine house in Wayhaven, sits a clear plastic storage container of VHS tapes - carefully marked, organized by date, and untouched for the last twenty-six years.

[AM 07:18 FRI MAY 24, 1991]

Static bars crackle and hum across the screen before giving way to the grainy image of a dim hallway in a standard American suburban home setting, typical of the late 20th century. Carpeted, photo-lined, popcorn ceiling-ed. A tinny gust of white noise supplements the silence and then, a deep voice speaks behind the camera, resonant with warmth. “Alright, here we go. Walking down the hall now aaaand…there’s Immy. Hi Immy! Sitting here with Mama.”

The image moves unsteadily with the camera operator’s motion into an open, brightly lit if outdated by modern standards kitchen. Two figures are seated against a round table tucked into a nook at the side, framed in early morning shafts of golden light by a large bay window looking out onto Wayhaven’s main thoroughfare. 

A moderate breakfast spread clutters the table’s surface where a woman, young, dark haired, oval-faced, dressed equal parts fashionable and professional, bends over a toddler, no more than two and wearing turquoise Little Mermaid pajamas in contrast to the woman’s business attire. She squirms in a high back wooden chair, confined by a plastic booster seat but still craning her little hair-mussed head to look behind her. 

“Hi Daddy,” the toddler chirps happily, lifting a purple stained hand and flapping her fingers up and down in a welcoming gesture at the screen.  

“You and that camera,” the woman sighs, tersely placing down a knife smeared with grape jelly.  

The image draws closer to the table and its occupants, causing the toddler to bounce wildly in her seat at the attention, while the woman shies away with a hand obscuring half her features. 

“Bex, turn her this way.” 

The woman abandons her pretense of embarrassment to scoot the child’s chair away from the table so her cheesy smile and jelly covered cheeks are facing the camera. 

“Look at you!” The man laughs. 

“What’s this for?” The woman beckons flippantly at the video taker. 

The image closes tight around one of the toddler’s dark brown eyes before readjusting until her small shoulders and the full breadth of her features are in frame. “For us to look back on one day when we’re having our food pre-chewed by someone else.”

An offscreen tut of a tongue. The toddler continues to wave her jelly covered hands around with abandon. “That’s disgusting, honey. No one who watches this wants to hear that.”

“Dis-gus-ding! Disgusding, Daddy,” The child echoes, the image still steady on her smiling face. 

“Oh, c’mon. I’d do it for you in a heartbeat.” The sound of exaggerated chewing and slurping heightened by the mouth’s close proximity to the camera. 

The image falls, shifting focus to the laminated floor, a shuffling of movement as a woman’s voice chimes with amusement, “Stop! Okay, okay stop it!”  

A few seconds pass, the image recentering on the cheerful breakfast scene, a wider shot that captures both woman and child, abundantly similar in appearance framed side by side. The woman delicately crosses the pressed seam of her pantsuit and looks up at the man behind the camera. “Well you’d be fresh out of luck. How is any of this interesting, we’re just eating breakfast?”

“Look, one day she’s going to sprint out the door without so much as a goodbye in the mornings, so let me have this. For sentiment’s sake. What are you eating, Immy?”

“Is that such a mystery, Detective Calder? You cooked it all.”

“Toast and jelly,” the child responds with enthusiasm, elongating the vowels and kicking her heels against the plastic chair. 

“She’s not eating it so much as smearing it everywhere,” the woman chuckles, taking a napkin to the corner of the toddler’s mouth, who squirms away with the unruly never ending energy of a two year old.

The grin in the man’s voice is palpable even through the screen. “Edible art. I like it. So what is my Immy going to get up to today, hm? Mischief? Havoc? Dare I say…mayhem?”

The toddler giggles with each word and emphasized swoop of the camera down to her eye level. The image then pans to the woman whose full mouth is pursed around a smile she’s trying and failing to subdue. 

“What about my Bex. I think there’s all sorts of mischief in store for my Bex today. She looks ready for mischief, doesn’t she? And stunningly beautiful, I might add.” A slow and rather inexpert zoom on the cross-armed and woefully unimpressed posture that has replaced the woman’s amusement with the camera’s focus. 

“I’m trying to get her fed before the Nanny gets here, Rook. You’re not helping.”

In the background, a dull splatter of something thrown or tossed or otherwise fallen, followed by the jubilant laughter of a triumphant toddler that disavows at least the most innocent of these options.  

“Think she’s already waylaid your plans, Chamber Member. Takes after her old man.” 

The woman exclaims loudly in Mandarin and jolts from her chair. Hasty movement, and then joint laughter fills the audio channels. The image jostles with forgotten motion, the man’s voice saying, “I’ll clean-”

Comissioned @darksprawn for my Wayhaven Detectives Eleanore and Margot!! I love them so much 😭. The sound I made when they were finished wasn't human!

Eleanore is a casual jeans and t-shirt kind of girl. A lot of old band t-shirts, sometimes with a blazer. Rebecca wishes she would dress a little more professionally but Eleanore doesn't really care, she wants to be comfortable.

And Margot is a little more fashionable with her open shirt and bralette (which as you can imagine causes Nate quite a bit of personal distress lol) but I promise it's buttoned up a little more when she's working 😂.
