13. for one grumpy mcGrumpkins vampire please, spare some soft mason content

butterfly kisses against the other’s cheeks

it’s rare that she wakes up before him, but today, she has an unfair advantage.

they were out late last night, on a mission. an ambush, actually, is the proper term, he’s pretty sure -- and the resulting fight (just once, he’d like to enjoy a mission without a fight attached to it) had left him pretty badly injured and in need of recovery, when she dragged him back to her place at four o’clock in the morning.

fuck if he knows what time it is, now. all he can sense is kira, in bed beside him, half on top of him under the sheets. the muted scent of her shampoo swirls in his brain, and the featherlight itch of her hair brushing against his face slowly stirs him to wakefulness with a groan.

mason shifts in the sheets, fumbling behind her back to connect his hand with her side and pull her closer. his eyes crack open slowly, and he blinks when he sees kira’s face, closer than he thought it’d be, tucked affectionately against his own.

it’s not the seemingly endless strands of her dark hair he feels on his face, over the stubble lining his jaw. it’s her eyelashes.

“what’re you doing?” he grumbles, sliding his hand up and over her back without pushing her away.

it feels kind of nice.

“waking you up,” kira answers easily, still batting her eyelashes against his cheek. her right hand rests on the far side of his ribs, where his injury from last night has long since healed over into nothing. “gently, because i know how you are.”

he scoffs, curling his arm around her waist more fully. they’re both at the very edge of her mattress, the rest of the bed undisturbed beyond her side. it’s probably ridiculous, how they’ve crammed themselves into this one square foot of space, when there’s all the room in the world to spread out, but he makes no move to correct it. “how i am? that’s rich, coming from you.”

“and yet, you never wake me up with butterfly kisses,” she murmurs, fluttering her eyelashes high on his cheekbone. 

butterfly kisses. he turns the phrase over in his mind. 

that’s new. 

“why would i do that,” mason asks slowly, dipping his hand lower down her back, “when there’s so many other fun ways to wake you up?”

the trill of her laughter rings out loudly in the room. despite himself, mason can feel a smile starting to form on his face. 

kira tilts her chin up to look at him, pulling her eyelashes away. “i guess that’s fair,” she grins, “but... after last night -- i wanted to...” 

she trails off, teeth biting at her bottom lip. he reaches out and bumps his knuckles affectionately under her jaw. “cut it out,” mason says, “i’m fine. all healed up, promise.”

his eyes linger on the line of her throat as she swallows. the look on her face suggests she’d enjoy arguing further, so he dips in to kiss her before she gets the chance to organize her thoughts, slowly moving his mouth against hers. 

kira shoots him an unimpressed look, when he pulls away. it says i know what you’re doing and it’s not going to work, but, the thing is -- it usually does.

to really loosen her up, he leans in and over-exaggeratedly bats his eyelashes against her cheek, too quickly to be sweet.

“And what the fuck is that?”

There’s a loud snort of laughter coming from Felix at Mason’s confused (yet already disgusted) expression. “Aw, man, I’m going to have so much fun teaching you everything about Pokémon!”

That only makes Mason grimace. Felix grins wavers a bit as he frowns and turns to look at Hyeon. “Wait, since when do you have a tattoo? Can I see it?”

“Oh, uhm,” the detective scratches the back of his neck, smiling sheepishly. “It’s not in a place people usually see? Unless they buy me dinner first, of course.”

It takes a couple of seconds for his words to be registered. Felix already looks as if he’s about to explode, but it’s not until Mason lets out a low, feral chuckle that he joins in, cackling obnoxiously. To be fair, not even Nate manages to bite back a smile.

“You’re telling me,” Felix starts to ask as he gasps for air between snickers, “You have some kind of pokémon tattooed on your-”

“On my ass, yeah.” Hyeon nods, a bit too solemnly considered the situation. “It’s the Squirtle Squad leader. You know, the one with sunglasses?”

That leads to more laughter, and he grins before bowing in mock humility, flicking his dark hair seductively. “I know, I know... I’m a catch.”

“That you are.” Nate smiles from where he’s sitting, and it’s a mix of amused playfulness and steadfast fondness.

Felix looks at them with a knowing smirk for a moment, right before clearing his throat. “Well, Natey doesn’t seem to mind it. So, thinking about getting another one?”

Hyeon groans. “Don’t even joke about it. I got this one in college and I didn’t notice until the day after because I was too drunk to remember.”

Mason snorts. “Nice.”

“Not nice! Very much not nice! Apparently I drunk-called mom 10 minutes after leaving the tattoo shop, sobbing.”

He cringes at the memory, before turning to Nate with an intense stare. The vampire simply raises a brow in question.

“Nathaniel? Please don’t make me do something so stupid again. I need you to protect my beautiful body from other terrible decisions.”

Nate laughs, the corner of his warm brown eyes crinkling in hilarity. 

“For you detective, I shall do my very best.”
