Hi there! First, I just wanted to say I absolutely love Wayhaven Chronicles - playing/reading through the books is one of my comfort activities and I’m so happy to have found this series. As I was playing through book 1 again, I had a couple of questions about Murphy. I thought that Murphy stole then identity of someone else at the start of the game - is Ethan Murphy his real name? Sorry if I misunderstood! Also, if Murphy is caught at the end of book 1, is he being held at the facility near Wayhaven? We saw how they were punishing supernaturals in that book - are they treating Murphy the same? Totally understand if it’s too spoiler-y to answer that!

Murphy is not his real name, no. But he's not exactly forthcoming on giving up his real name, so he's still known as Murphy.

And yeah, Murphy is currently being held at the facility and is caged if he was caught. I'm sure the MC will get a chance for an encounter at some point in the future again...

THE FOREST OUTSIDE OF THE STAINED WINDOW RESTS QUIETLY TONIGHT. Not a single sound rings out in the warehouse. Adam’s eyes stay locked onto the glass. The different colors bleed into each other as his gaze bores into them, a quiet sort of desperation clinging to every edge of the fractured light.

Despite the silence, his mind cannot find rest. Thoughts creep in, insidious, filling every corner of his mind. Thoughts of you. How can one person invade another so completely? You’ve bewitched him, there’s no other explanation. Your infuriating smile, your ridiculous jokes—

His throat tightens as warmth invades him, uninvited. He hates that he seeks out your voice, your gaze. And yet, he craves it. Craves the way your eyes find his in a crowd, as if you see him, really see him.

“Maybe it’ll grow on you.”

“Like a tumor, you mean?”

He can still hear your voice from that day at the diner, your laughter so close to his. The sun was drenching you in gold, framing you in a halo of light. He can’t tell if it was the sun warming his skin or if it was you.

And in that light, you were something otherworldly, untouchable. A saint, and he—what was he? A sinner. A broken thing gazing up at something far too good for him. You, a creature of unwavering hope, of impossible strength. His chest aches because he can’t reach for you. You pull him closer, but he resists. He can’t—won’t—bring the darkness he carries into your light. He’s terrified that if he does, your brightness will expose everything. It’ll show him for what he truly is—leave him bare, stripped of his defenses.

“This shouldn’t be your life. You deserve…” He swallows, the words catching in his throat. “You deserve more.”

You deserve more than him.

The memory of your skin, bruised and broken, haunts him. The cuts on your arms that he yearns to heal with his hands, with his lips. There’s something delicate in it—a sweetness so fierce it threatens to consume him whole. The feeling is like a vice around his throat, choking him with need. He wants to be closer, to merge with you, because some part of him knows—you would fit perfectly. But it’s a violent kind of love, tangled in pain. Loving you is a barbed wire wrapped tight around his neck; it’s the only thing that keeps him breathing, but it’s also what strangles him. He wishes he could unravel himself in front of you, strip away his defenses, stand naked before your candlelight and not even flinch.

But he can’t. He can’t let you see him for what he is. He can’t love you the way he wants to, the way you deserve. His love feels like a curse, like a blade pressed to your skin. It’s poison, something that’ll rot you from the inside out. How can he let you carry that?

You make it impossible for him to turn away, though. You beg him—without words, without sound—just with the way you look at him. He knows you’re asking for something he can’t give. You want to believe this is right. You want him to tell you it’s okay to love him back. But how can he promise that when he’s certain he’ll ruin you? How can he believe that your love will survive after you see what he truly is?

“I don’t think you’re a monster, Adam.”

He knows he should hate the way you look at him. The way your face lights up when you see him. It makes him feel—just for a moment—like he’s something worth looking at, like he’s someone’s hope, someone’s person. It makes him feel wanted. But he doesn’t deserve that.

You make him want things he’s long denied himself. You make him believe it’s possible to crave something good, something pure. His eyes remain locked on your figure through the stained glass. The sunlight pours over you like it did that day, and it feels almost as if he could touch it, touch you. His fingers graze the glass, the warmth bleeding through. So close, but never close enough. He presses harder, desperate to feel you, to reach you.

As much as I rag on UB's lying skills, and will continue to do so, this is actually fucking excellent manipulation. Both through word choice and body language. By leaning away from Farah and lowering her voice, as if to share a secret, Nat places herself as being on the Detective's side in this "us versus them" situation. She creates this alliance with the Detective of "you and me, we are the reasonable ones here" and it works so well because so far, Nat has consistently been the only member of the team to not alienate them immediately. She's leaning into this "good cop" persona as opposed to the rest of UB, who have either been directly hostile or intentionally provoking/trolling. By doing this, she's able to slide under the Detective's suspiciousness, and she cements the position by adding in her concern over the Detective's feeling as if she is trying to undermine their investigation (which is exactly what she's trying to do). This is also really clever because it essentially gets the Detective to argue for her side as well. Then, by saying it was the Detective's idea, she continues the theme of "conspiring" with them by giving them the credit for this obviously good idea -- which, in this particular version, we know the Detective to believe it to be a solid plan.

While this doesn't necessarily end with the Detective duped into thinking they originated the idea, it does leave them feeling as if this is a plan they cooperated and compromised on. And most importantly, Nat is on their side.

The fandom knows that Nat is smooth, particularly in romance, but I like the side to her that can be genuinely sneaky as well. Ava, frankly, bungles the situation by putting the Detective on the defensive and antagonizing when UB really needs to gain unquestioning trust from them, which, because of the nature of their mission, they cannot get through telling them "hey, we're trying to save your ass." Nat takes Ava's screwup and turns it into the bad cop. In addition to showing off her own prowess, this also gives an example of the team working together effectively.

Also, what's really clever about this as well, is that it establishes Nat's character of being the softer touch foil to Ava AND as the member of UB best able to integrate with human society. On this playthrough, I am noticing that Nat seems to be the one with the fewest slipups, despite being the one who most wants to tell the Detective the truth. Having read as far as the beginning of Book 3, it really highlights how much Nat tries to be as human as possible that she is the only one to really pull it off convincingly.

When this came out I SWEAR i shrieked out!! Just how fitting was Felix to Adventure and Nate to Knowledge but then again we got my best friend here as the punchline and again it's soooo him. Even my mc and Adam they are so in-character!!

I actually pictured this out happening in the station (since I've also selected coffee as my mc's favorite drink, so i have a coffee maker in the station) and we know how much A loves to break things (literally and figuratively). Though in the real sense, UB wouldve just kicked Bobby out and not have a chance for this kind of conversation but it's just as what-if scenario and it's cute and funny mwehehe plus my mc admitting its her fault just to get it over with is so on point help 😭
