How is Dany is abusive to Jon?
Honest question, I’ve never given it a thought
I'm sorry this took me so long, anon, and I am really sorry for how long this post got. I had a lot of thoughts on this.
Before we begin, I'd like to point you to this compilation of Jon's reactions to Dany, which hardly paints a picture of a man who is happy and in love, as well as this post and this gifset, both pointing out the parallels between Jon's relationship with Dany and Sansa's relationship with Littlefinger, the latter being a relationship I hope most people can agree is abusive.
It's absolutely crucial to remember that in this relationship, Dany is the person with the power. She is the one with the dragons and the biggest army, and she is willing to both use and abuse that power to get her way.
Furthermore, Dany wants the North's loyalty, but the North needs her help. (The fact that it's Dany's duty as well as in her own best interest to help fight the Others is a different discussion; she doesn't seem to understand this anyway.) She has agreed to grant that help, but she could easily withdraw it if she chooses. She has more power than literally anyone else and there's simply no escaping that power imbalance - it permeates every single interaction Dany has with Jon and all the other Northerners for all of s7 and the first half of s8.
I want you to remember how Dany treats Jon on Dragonstone. His weapons and his boat are taken away immediately upon his arrival. She says Jon is "not yet" her prisoner, but 1) that line very clearly implies that she could make him her prisoner if she chooses to, and 2) how much does it really matter that Jon is "not yet" her prisoner when she's already taken away his means of defending himself or leaving the island? Remember how she later tells him "I haven't given you permission to leave." Girl, what happened to Jon not being your prisoner?
I think it's also very telling that Dany never once addresses Jon by his proper title of King in the North, even before he bends the knee. As you may recall, Dany cares a great deal about titles. She never grants Jon the same respect she demands for herself, and she likes to remind Jon that she is his Queen even during a supposedly intimate, romantic scene.
Tumblr media
(Gif by yocalio via gameofthronesdaily)
Earlier in this scene, Dany pointed out that they could stay here in this secluded spot, away from the kingdom and its politics, and no one would find them. Yet even here, away from the rest of the world, she makes a point of referring to herself as "your Queen".
I point all of this out to illustrate that from the very beginning and throughout their relationship, Dany views Jon as a subordinate, not an equal. That is very much not a good foundation for a healthy and equal romantic relationship. Her constant expectation is that Jon will submit, obey, give things up to benefit her, and ensure that the people he has power over act the way she wants.
Case in point:
"Your sister doesn't like me. [...] She doesn't need to be my friend, but I am her Queen. If she can't respect me..."
The implication is that Sansa is doing something wrong by not liking or respecting Dany (meaning "not acting deferential enough for Dany's taste"). The fact that Dany is saying this to Jon and not to Sansa herself implies that it's Jon's responsibility to ensure that Sansa behaves acceptably. "If she can't respect me..." Then what? What exactly is she implying will be the consequences? That their romantic relationship will end? Something worse?
At this point, the North has bent the knee to Dany. As their monarch this is not an entirely unreasonable thing to ask of her subjects - but it's not a very reasonable thing for a girlfriend to ask of her boyfriend, is it? The line between Jon and Dany's political relationship as monarch and subject and their personal relationship as girlfriend and boyfriend isn't just blurred, it's practically nonexistent. To state the obvious, there is a reason we decided that absolute monarchies are bad here in the real world. There is also a reason why a boss dating a subordinate is frowned upon in the real world. Big power imbalances are a bad idea in general and in romantic relationships especially. They should at the very least be considered and navigated carefully. Dany not only fails to do so; she is only happy with her and Jon's relationship when she has power over him.
For proof, let's look at how she reacts when that power imbalance is upended by the revelation of Jon's true identity:
youtube
This revelation is a bombshell for Jon. Everything he thought he knew about his own origins turns out to be untrue. However, Dany's first and only thought is how this affects her. Her first reaction is denial and scepticism; the second is to turn cold as soon as she realises that this makes Jon a threat to her ambitions.
There's also this line:
"A secret no one in the world knew, except your brother and your best friend. Doesn't seem strange to you?"
Which implies... What, exactly? That Sam and Bran made this up? Why? Just like with Sansa in the previous scene, we see Dany questioning the actions and intentions of Jon's loved ones. Remember that.
Things escalate in episode 4:
youtube
Dany is faced with the notion that Jon might hold more political power than she thought, that they might actually be on somewhat equal footing, and this makes her unhappy.
"I want it to be the way it was between us."
Her desire is to continue their sexual relationship and to return to the previous status quo where she held more power than him and therefore didn't consider him a threat. Jon having a stronger claim to the throne than her threatens Dany's sense of her own identity and purpose, and she reacts by trying to deny and suppress this reality:
"You can say nothing, to anyone, ever! Swear your brother and Samwell Tarly to secrecy and tell no one else! Or it will take on a life of its own and you won't be able to control it or what it does to people!"
Tumblr media
(Imagine this with the genders reversed. Yikes.)
Dany is demanding Jon keep his own identity secret from his own family. That's not a reasonable thing to ask of a person you love. Not for one second does she show any consideration for how Jon might feel or what Jon might want. It's all about her. Her expectation is that Jon suppress his own identity, his own reality, to benefit Dany's ambitions. Never once does it seem to occur to Dany that what Jon does with this secret is up to him to decide, not her. His agency is of no concern to her.
Jon: I have to tell Sansa and Arya. Dany: Sansa will want to see me gone and you on the Iron Throne. [...] She's not the girl you grew up with. Not after what she's seen, not after what they've done to her. [...] Jon: They're my family. We can live together. Dany: We can. I've just told you how.
Here we are again with Dany questioning the motives and agendas of Jon's loved ones. Now she's no longer implying but outright stating that they're working against her. What we have here is a pattern of Dany implying that Jon's loved ones are up to no good and can't be trusted. I don't need to explain why that is a dangerous and manipulative thing to do to one's partner, right?
I also want you to pay extra attention to how Emilia delivers that final line. Throughout the whole scene Dany is distraught and desperate, but at this point she turns cold and closed off with an unmistakable anger that Jon won't agree to do as she demands. It is very hard not to read a threatening undertone into that line. "Keep it secret, or else."
Before we move on to episode 5, I'd like to highlight this line, spoken by Dany to Tyrion and Varys in episode 4:
"Speaking to Cersei will not prevent a slaughter. But perhaps it's good the people see that Daenerys Stormborn made every effort to avoid bloodshed, and Cersei Lannister refused. They should know whom to blame when the sky falls down upon them."
Let's be clear on one thing here: Cersei could choose to back down and surrender to avoid bloodshed - but, and I cannot stress this enough, so could Dany. Cersei and Dany are both being selfish and power-hungry by refusing to give up the throne in order to avoid bloodshed. But to admit that would ruin Dany's deeply rooted self-image as morally superior to her enemies. So what does she do instead? She deflects blame. She's the one with the dragons, but if she makes the sky fall down on people, as she puts it, it's not her fault. Keep that in mind.
Now for the absolute low point:
youtube
"What did I say would happen if you told your sister? [...] She betrayed your trust. She killed Varys as much as I did. This was a victory for her. Now she knows what happens when people hear the truth about you."
Okay. Varys was conspiring against Dany, which he could've chosen not to do; I guess Dany was within her rights to punish him. She still could've chosen to imprison him, or at least give him a trial. Nobody made her kill him. But as we've just seen, Dany doesn't like to accept responsibility for her own decisions. She'd rather deflect the blame onto the people who displease her.
What's more, she's not just blaming Sansa for Varys's death but Jon as well, for telling Sansa the secret in the first place - which Jon was well within his rights to do! He never agreed not to tell anyone. That wasn't up to Dany to decide in the first place. Jon did what he wanted to do and not what she wanted him to do, so now everything Dany does as a result of Jon's actions is Jon's fault? Do I even need to explain how shitty this is?
"Far more people in Westeros love you than love me. I don't have love here. I only have fear."
This is entirely true. She never stops to think about why Jon is more beloved in Westeros than she is, but whatever. What's important is that after this, Dany initiates a kiss and Jon rebuffs her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Gifs from snowsource)
"Alright then. Let it be fear."
Again, what exactly do we think she's implying here? Remember the context. During this conversation, Jon already told her "you will always be my queen". He hasn't rejected her as his queen (which at this point he damn well should), he's just rejecting her sexual advances. And yet, Dany's reaction to his personal rejection of her is to embrace "fear", which again refers to how all of Westeros sees her, not just Jon. Dany already deflected blame for her previous actions onto people who displeased her including Jon, and now she's deflecting the blame for her future actions in the same way. And we all know what she did after this, don't we? I don't know how the line "let it be fear" can mean anything other than "you rejected me and that's why I'm going to embrace being feared, so whatever I do now in the name of being feared is really your fault. Look what you made me do." If that isn't abuse, I don't know what is.

Really appreciate someone acknowledging Jon, despite being a male character, being a victim of rape.
For a long time I thought maybe I was overanalyzing, or projecting my own experiences as a female victim, or just reading too much into it. But I kept going back and trying to see things from the point of view for the defences I kept coming across that it's normal and consensual. And I just couldn't reach that.
And now it just stands out that in a fandom that is very passionate about defending female characters from men's sexual violence, we almost never talk about how Jon Snow has multiple times now, fallen into that category of rape victims.
Many rape victims struggle to see themselves as such, tend to do memory edits of people to make their abusers better in their minds, tend to convince themselves the abuse is normal behavior or that it isnt rape because it physically felt good.
Jon is a strong, capable, skilled man with a good head on his shoulders and I genuinely think we as a fandom have tricked ourselves believe it means he must know exactly what he is doing. I don't generally like doing a "if the genders were swapped" defense, but it needs to be said to people who ship Jon with these women or defend these women.
If Jon was a female instead of a man and if his love interests were male we would be viewing it undeniably as rape. And just because Jon doesn't say it's rape doesn't mean it isnt. Both of Jon's love interests were not consensual relationships, and just because he doesn't think the words himself, doesn't mean he wasn't raped.
I just feel passionate about this one, I've looked at all angles many times and everytime I circle back around to Jon is a rape victim, but we have failed to acknowledge it because he is a male character against female perpetrators.
Jon deserves better then to have both his love interests, also be the same women who raped him. And deserved far better then to have so many people root for those relationships.

With Winterfell taken care of, that is all Jon asks for. As long as his people is safe, he will happily bend the knee and give her as many men as she could possibly need. She will make a fine Queen, this he knows in his heart to be true.
His head tilts slightly when she touches him, her touch enough to send a shiver down his spine despite the furs that keep him warm. Her touch is electrifying, even the smallest touch he'd been granted is enough to drive him insane.
Then her lips are on his and he melts against her, bringing a palm up to cup her cheek as he returns the kiss. A kiss that doesn't last long and he has to silence the protest before he lets it be known when she breaks it off.
When she does, his eyes open to look up at her, and a smile makes itself known upon his features. His hand slides down from her cheek, over the curve of her waist which he uses his grip on to tug her firmly against his own body.
"If that is what my Queen desires, how could I ever ignore her? I'd be honored and pleased to keep you warm, Dany."

🐉 ───── she trusted him. as odd as that could seem, she did. more than she trusted anyone. they had similar goals that was clear as ever. she was thankful for clarity in that. that they would deal with the worst of the problems and then they would head for kings landing and claim the throne from the grasp it currently lay in. a grasp that's been far to long.
"i will helo you, jon snow. that was never in question. the dead are coming and if they are not defeated there is no throne to take." she pointed out. she had her priorities straight and she cared for people. she did not want them all to die at the hands of death itself. "if i have yours, then you have mine." she confessed.
her feet carried her to him and fingers reached out to brush his cheek. her fingers reached out and brushed along the stubble and hair upon his chin as she leaned forwards and pressed her lips slowly and carefully against his own. she made a noise as she deepened the connection and then proceeded to draw back.
"we have tonight before we have to prepare." she whispered quickly. "perhaps we forget war talk and you keep me warm up here in the north, it's .... quite chilly." she gave a laugh even as she said it and her hand pressed against his chest. "hm?"

The extensive J*nerys pictures implying their """"love"""" and them standing all close together actually make me think that it's all just a huge misdirect. So far, everyone has talked about how shocking the season is and that it won't go how we think. Using that logic, there's no way j*nerys are endgame, with the way its being shoved into our face. Them ending up together would shock no one. Honestly, the more j*nerys we get, the more confident I am that they won't end up together.
lots of times i think people go way overboard with analysing the characters like … micro facial expressions and how their hands are placed in promo pics. but you know? your absolutely right.
their posing in this promo especially is like every fourteen year old boyfriend and girlfriend in high school who have been together for two weeks, are telling everyone how in love they are, one of them has a side piece and the other has threatened to fight said side piece in the school cafeteria before fifth period maths.

Do you think the eventual Daemyra sex scene will ne explicit? (I refuse to believe there won't be one included in the show). Considering how GoT was explicit I'd hope so??? I might not survive cut to black 😭😂
I believe so, at least as explicit as romantic couples are allowed to be on the show. And I'm taking reference from GoT so I may be wrong in some things too bc my last rewatch was a year ago I think, and I do have a shitty memory, but this is why I believe so. At least the beach sex scene.
As we've seen in Game Of Thrones, romantic couples (like Jonerys or Robb and Talia) are not shown the same way a random character and a whore are shown, because they want us to know they love each other, so we never watch them fucking, we watch them making love, we don't hear loud moans and skin slapping and feel some kind of whiplash from the sudden of the scen, instead they build it up, we see them stare at each other, kissing lovingly and all in all there's a sense of intimacy. And if they were fucking, we only see the aftermath. They used this to show us the development of Dany and Drogo's relationship, at first when he used to rape her the scene was raw and explicit and shocking. The next sex scene they shared (I think) starts abruptly too, but then it comes to a halt when Dany tells him she wants to look into his eyes this time ("love comes at the eyes')and it slows down. That was the closest we've seen to them make love, and after that their next scene in bed it's the aftermath. I do not think they were in love for real, but the show wanted to potray them as romantic, so they never had a typical GoT some sex scene again. There's also Jaime and Cersei, who claimed to be in love, but the show didn't want us to see them that way (the first one was for the shock value, but they turned one of their lovemaking scenes from the book into a rape scene), their relationship was villianized until the scene from Cersei's pov (the "I love my brother, I choose my lover" scene), their next scenes were never shown complete, or we see aftermath/morning after (actually their last love scene was very sweet, when Cersei is already Queen and she let's the maid see Jaime in her bed) but even when they were agressive ot mad at each other and stuff the sex was never shown the same way.
Since from the very first ep the show seems to want the audience to see daemyra in a romantic light, and we've already had some peeks at the beach sex scene in the show's trailer, I think we'll get an scene similar to jonerys' boat sex, I don't think they'll be so cruel to just give us a cut to black, I'm sure we'll get to see some sweet lovemaking, something in the middle of a sex scene and an after sex scene😌
And hopefully it's not the only scene we'll get of them! (I really wouldn't mind seeing them doing it raw and rough tbh lol) if the leaks are true, we may see one before they're married (very much hope so)
And yea, I could've just said yes, but I wanted to ramble a bit lol

Over the last week I’ve fallen head over heels in love with @rayondeneige ‘s amazing story ‘Sometimes, I'd Rather Die’.
It is the perfect remix, poetic and bittersweet, and so it was my greatest pleasure to create this gift and illustrate one of my absolutely favourite scenes from it!! The next chapter is coming soon, so keep your eyes open; you definitely have something to look forward to! ❤️

Thought this might give you some food for thought: I’m anti j*nrya and anti j*nsa on the grounds of incest but I like J*nerys. And here’s why. Our brains identify our relatives based on our lives experience with them, not actual blood shared. The material experience and lived relationships we have with other people are not changed by learning that there is blood shared or not shared. That’s why Jon still loved Dany when he found out they were related, even though he was uncomfortable with it. It didn’t dissolve the way his brain categorized her (as a non relative) based on experience. Likewise, Jon finding out that his siblings are actually his cousins isn’t going to make him suddenly able to be attracted to them because his whole life his brain has categorized them as relatives. When he meets and bonds with Dany, they have no idea. This is why it’s actually pretty uncommon for lifelong childhood friends raised side by side to end up together. Their experience is likely to have led their brains to classify each other as relatives. This all isn’t meant to change your mind or anything like that, but I’ve had people question how I can be against J*nsa, J*nrya, D*emyra, etc but like Jonerys
You have an interesting point of view, but I respectfully disagree entierly for a few reasons. First being, it scientifically is actually based off of blood. We are genetically hardwired to be sexually and romantically repulsed by our blood relatives, because it is a survival instinct against inbreeding.
It's why most long lost relatives are not accidentally attracted to family members before learning of their relation. We are genuinly hardwired in our DNA and genetic code to be repulsed by those who share within those sets of genetics. We can detect invisible markers that our conscious minds do not know about that indicate a similarity in blood relatives and will repulsed immediately. It's why incest is so abnormal, because it is biologically unnatural to be attracted to members of your family even if you don't know they are your blood relatives.
It's why the Targaryean incestual practices made them extinct, because it is unsustainable. We are biologically opposed to inbreeding because of the serious medical complications and issues of infertility. If I breed with my uncle, we share too many of the same genetic markers. Meaning that whatever rare syndromes or diseases we carry hereditary genes of, need to be matched with a partner that does not carry a hereditary ability to pass those rare conditions on. If I breed with my uncle we are too similar and it increases the chance a child would inherit those rare conditions because they did not have a second parent that could cancel out the hereditary genes. It's why we are almost never attracted to any blood relative, it is a survival instinct coded within our very dna.
Meaning it doesn't matter if Jon had no idea he was related to her, there is a 99% chance Jon naturally would not have any attraction to her because biology would already be warning him of the red flags his internal sensors are picking up of similar genetic traits. He also would likely be horrified because Dany is related to him in the exact way Jon thought he was related to Lyanna (meaning having sex with a woman who is his aunt likely would leave him traumatized since he just learned a woman he thought was aunt is actually his mother). She's his aunt in the exact way Benjen was his uncle, and he grew up both not raised to think incest is normal and he follows the old gods which strongly condemns it. He psychologically would have trauma learning he was related to her after having sex with her.
Also, being transparent, Dany being related to him is literally like one of the last reasons I have against them as a ship. My argument is Jon would oppose her as a human being because she stands for everything he finds monstrous, and their entire relationship is abuse and any subsequent sex is rape.
I outline a lot of this in this post and this post if you were curious.
I respect your choice to ship it but I fundamentally disagree with any argument of Jon ever being attracted to her for multiple reasons.
I think he would never be attracted to her, like her, or respect her. And I think their show relationship is gross and abusive, and rape.
The incest is just the icing on the 'no' cake.

drabble 68 + 76?
Absolutely! These two prompts are obviously best for fluff but I went angst 🤭 I know WHAT!? This is a peek into a universe I planned to write earlier this year and I teased with a moodboard (it caused drama because someone thought I was ‘remixing” aka stealing two other Jonerys fics, because of course 🙄) but I plan to return to it soon. Enjoy!
Tumblr media
just one word | 68. “He’s four years old!” & 76. “Daddy!”
They all told her not to worry. Everyone said kids were different, they were resilient, and they “marched to their own drum beats.” Most people said that. It seemed to be the default reply, when she expressed her fear and her worries over her son’s development. They were their own drummers, they had their own tunes, etcetera. Except if that were wholly true, then kids would be doing things at all manner of ages and development stages. They wouldn’t follow a trajectory.
It just seemed that Rhaego had always been a little bit behind. A happy, bright baby, and a happy, bright toddler, but…she knew that his father’s death had hit him hard, even if he was so little he would have no memory of him. It wasn’t like he even saw him frequently. It just…it did. She did her best, but she really didn’t want photos of her ex-husband around the house. There was a single one in his bedroom, on his dresser, and that was it.
Even adding in the turmoil in his young life, Dany knew something else was going on in her son’s head. Appointments, specialists, and here they were, a few months into a new therapist. ASD. Autism Spectrum Disorder. Asperger’s Syndrome. “Don’t worry about it,” the doctor told her. “He will talk when he’s ready to talk.”
“He’s four years old!” Children should be talking at four, she wanted to cry, but her son didn’t. He just…didn’t talk. Not a word. He would point and smile and nod and generally make some sounds, but beyond that…nothing.
She stood in the stables one cold evening, not ready to go in just yet, watching from the corner as he worked with Rhaego. It had been something of a miracle when he managed to get her son to approach her horses. He had alays been sos cared and it made sense. Horses were big, unpredictable, and the stables were sensory overload. Sounds, smells, and sensations that most people didn’t generally like, let alone a small boy on the spectrum.
When she’d called to him, telling him it was time to go back up to the main house, she hadn’t heard him walking towards her, his little boots scuffing on the hard packed dirt and stone flooring, dragging along his ratty, nasty blanket he never let go. She had followed the sound of a horse in the ring, wondering if one of the horses hadn’t been put up for the night, and saw them.
It broke her heart, but made it whole too.
Her son, so frightened of the animals she had fallen in love with, had made it her life’s mission to care for, sitting atop one of the oldest ponies, an amiable, bumbling Shetland named Havzi—Dothraki for cat—because he would fall asleep anywhere and follow people around like a cat when he was a baby.
The little boy sat in the saddle, clutching the pommel, and made no sound as her--- Trainer? Boyfriend? Partner? Love of her bloody life? It was hard to place his role these days-- walked them both in small circles in the ring. It was so quiet, just the hooves plodding along in the sandy dirt they used in the ring, she could hear him speaking.
His Northern burr was always so soothing, lulling her to sleep some nights as he told her stories or they talked of nothing. It rolled, low and steady, carrying on the one-sided conversation without any concern. “See Rhaego? He’s a good boy, just likes spending his days walking around in circles and eating all the grass up on the hills. Nothing to be scared about, he’s as gentle as a lamb.”
Tears pricekd the orners of her eyes and she covered her mouth with her palm, watching them. Rhaego was so calm, steady, and his gaze fixed straight ahead, but she could see his smile, curving on his silent lips. He just seemed…free. She swallowed the dry lump in her throat, watching them, transfixed.
It might have been hours; she did not move. When he finally stopped, he waited, holding onto the horse’s bridle, talking to Rhaego, calmly, gently, telling him that he was going to help him get down and to remember to thank Havzi for letting him ride him today, and that they would need to take him back to his stable and feed him and brush him. Rhaego nodded and didn’t cry or scream when he got off the little pony.
And she watched, awed, when he pet the pony and then sat down beside him, as Havzi shifted and moved to stand in front of him. They engaged in some exercises, just a few minutes of them, and then it was time to take him back, the three of them—the Northerner, the little boy, and the pony—left through one of the side entrances of the ring to the stables.
She hurried to join, rubbing her arms briskly and approached. “Hi guys,” she called, laughing and reaching her hands to Rhaego, upright so eh could see her palms. “Look at you! I saw you! You did so good!”
He ran towards her, grinning and flung his arms up around her. She squeezed him hard, hauling him up into her arms. He was so heavy; he was getting so big. She sniffed and laughed again, so he couldn’t sense her tears. They always caused him distress. “You’re such a brave, big boy. Did you learn a lot?” He nodded and continued to smile, gazing lovingly at the man approaching them.
“Hey.” He leaned down to brush his lips over hers. She returned the kiss, still smiling. He gazed at her with such love; she sometimes couldn’t believe she was on the receiving end of such a lok. His gray eyes twinkled and he nodded to Havzi. “I’m going to put him up. Rhaego? Are you going to help me?”
Rhaego nodded eagerly and she set him down, patting his back. “Go on, wait, wait, let me take your helmet…oh, okay nevermind.” He squealed, grabbing for the top of the helmet, rushing away, not wanting her to. She sighed and watched from the other side of the stable, when Rhaego helped with the tack.
A few minutes later, while Rhaego fed Havzi an apple, she turned towards her Jon. My Jon, she thought possessively, and pressed her palm to his heart, as he wrapped his strong arm around her shoulders. “He’s doing so well,” she marveled. “I remember when he would scream at the thought of coming to the stables…youv’e done wonders Jon.”
“You have, Daenerys, he’s your son.”
And yours too, she thought, because after almost a year together, Jon was the closest thing to a father that Rhaego had. Even her brother Rhaegar, who lived and worked with them, saw him every single day, had always been his uncle. There was never a confusion in her son’s eyes, but she knew he saw Jon as the father he didn’t have.
She took a deep breath, slowly exhaling. “He still isn’t talking,” she mumbled.
“He’ll talk when he has something to say. Talking is overrated.”
“Says the man who only speaks in monosyllables,” she teased. He had been silent when she’d hired him, so quiet, lost in his own world.
Jon grinned down at her, cocking his head. “I speak.”
“When you have something to say.”
“I love you. That’s something to say.”
She kissed him again, giggling. “I love you too.” Turning back towards the stall, she whistled to catch Rhaego’s attention. He glared at her, annoyed she distracted him from feeding Havzi. “Come on little cowboy you! Dinner time and it’s getting cold! How are you not cold?”
He shrugged and walked through the door, Jon closing it and latching it behind him. They all walked together from the stables up the winding path towards the main house at Dragonstone Ranch. Her gloveless fingers were freezing, trying to stay warm in the clutch of his hand in hers. Behind them, she heard Rhaego kicking at stray rocks and scuffing his feet. She stepped up into the house, calling out, “Rhaego, hurry up, we’re letting the hot air out.”
Jon took off his boots and shoved them in the cubby near the back door, in what was appropriately a mudroom. No boots in her house, that was the rule; gods only knew what was on the bottom of them. He spoke, as Rhaego brought up the rear, still goofing around by the stoop “You were really good today Rhaego. Tomorrow we’ll give Havzi a good brushing, maybe even wash his mane, does that sound like fun?”
“Daddy!”
It was just two syllables.
A shout.
A protest.
A name.
It was a word that all children said at some point in their lives. Usually Dada. Papa. Da. All manner of variations, but it was just a name.
Except.
Now.
It was joy. It was heartbreak. It was exclamation.
She gaped, unable to believe what she’d just heard, thinking she’d imagined it. “What did you just say?” she whispered, after an indetermined amount of time, staring at her son in the doorway, who was swaying side to side, not at all bothered. She dropped her boots on the floor with a clatter and fell to her knees inf ront of him, gripping his shoulders. “Rhaego? What did you just say?”
Rhaego turned his face to Jon and smiled, pointing at him. “Daddy.” He took a deep breath. “Daddy? Help me. I can’t get them.”
Every single word crystal clear. Complete sentences. The most beautiful sound she had ever heard, ranking only to the sound of his first cries as he entered the world. She swallowed back her sobs, letting go of him and falling to the side, watching as Jon said nothing, his face pale, and fingers trembling, helping Rhaego with his boots.
“Thank you,” he chirped, and ran off into the house.
Leaving them aghast in the mudroom.
She peered up at him, her fingers reaching for his blindly. “I…did he…did you…”
“Aye,” he gasped. He laughed and pushed his hand through his hair. “I…I can’t…Dany…”
They clutched each other, her face buried into his heart, sobbing. She released all the fear she’d been bottling up for four years, the worries she still had for him, but it was sheer relief. He was speaking. Talking.
He said ‘Daddy.’
She wiped at her eyes and hiccupped, whispering, “He called you Daddy. Jon…I…”
“He’s my son Dany.” He was firm. He cupped her chin, his thumb flicking tears away. He touched his forehead to hers, fierce, vowing. “He is my son.”
“He is,” she cried. They were a family. They had never talked about it specifically, but it was understood. She pushed her face back into his chest, clutching his hand, and he swayed in place with her in his arms as she cried in pure joy that the notion that everything would be alright.
