#tw: dental

[The following scene was impossible to pose, but I wanted it in the story like this, so I'm leaving most details to your imagination.]

Matthew stirred and mumbled something that was entirely unintelligible. “You may take my calendar from my pocket”, Fergus said, “and write on the blank pages what you want to say.”

So far Matt had thought all this was really happening, but now he knew he must be dreaming. Father never allowed anyone to write into his calendar – although they all longed to use the tiny slim pencil attached to it. He said they’d get calendars of their own once they had appointments to note. Which wouldn't be until a very hazy future when they were grown up. And now Matt couldn’t even properly enjoy it. With a swimming head and clumsy fingers he opened a blank page. “I’m so thirsty” was such a long sentence with so many letters. When he had written “I”, he wondered if he’d ever make it to the crucial part. Father called for Owen to stop the carriage. Without the rumbling it went better. Father always knew what to do or say.

“Do you want something to drink?” Fergus asked cautiously, and Matt nodded against his chest. Luckily Fiona had packed a bottle of water for them. Fiona always knew what to do, and Fergus wished she could have come with them. He used a good deal of the water to wash Matt’s face, as he didn’t want him to drink his own blood. Twenty-four hours ago he’d never have thought he could do all this without even getting to the edge of tears. He had feared this excursion almost as much as Matt had, but now he felt he could manage. He was the head of the family after all.

He always kept the slightly blood-stained page from his pocket-calendar, with the very sloped line on it: “Im so tirsy”

Hate needles, have a pathological terror of dentistry, but at this point the pain is sufficient that without access to the surgeon I might be willing to go out to the garden and find a good stick, so.

I meant to come back and start replies today

It's been a tough recovery and the dentist told me it would be. I'm very sensitive to antibiotics and they always tear up my stomach and true to its usual behavior, it is torn to all hell. I am still in pain but it's manageable with otc painkillers which I'm glad for. My gums are still sore from all the extra cutting she needed to do to extract, but it will heal.

I was able to gently chew soft noodles today and it felt so damn good to eat solid food again. My mentality has been a mess over my stomach, my mouth, and a few other things.

But I just now found out the results of my grandma's biopsy. She has cancer again, and this time it's inoperable. She will be getting a PET scan soon and will be talking to her oncologist about what can be done, but considering chemo nearly killed her the last time...

This is. Very heavy news. I lived with my grandparents the first 13 years of my life (with my parents too, we all lived in the same house). When we moved, they moved within walking distance. She has always been like a second momma to me and has done so much for me. My mom is a mess (this is her mom) and I'm a mess. It's incredibly heavy news.

And tomorrow I'm meant to be going to my sister's to celebrate my grandma's birthday. I'm obviously going, but it's going to be a very sad and stressful trip. My grandma has ALWAYS been here and I cannot fathom life without her here. This is. Really hitting me hard.

Mentally, I need to get back on here and do some replies and I will do some small asks. But please understand that I may be scarce still for a while, until the dust settles.

So 2023 ended on a shitty note and it keeps piling.

December 24th - my period started

December 28th - I wake up with the first symptoms of the flu

December 29th Late afternoon - I start feeling cold for no reason and can't seem to get warm. (At this point I'm also congested, coughing, and have a sore throat)

December 29th Night - I develop a low-grade fever and after hours of trying to sleep and being unsuccessful, I take a tepid shower then go back to bed. End up getting less than 4 hours sleep that night.

December 30th Day - My fever is back stays in the 102-103 area no matter what I do, I have a severe congestion migraine, sore throat, persistent cough, body aches + no medicines are working for me. Tylenol had no effect, ibuprofen didn't help, echinacea, vitamin C. Nothing is helping.

December 30th Night - I end up turning my heater off and turning my fan on to freeze out my fever and manage to get ~ 6 hours sleep.

December 31st - With the fever gone the symptoms reduced to still noticeable sinus migraine. My throat only hurts when I have mucus that needs to be coughed up but I have to cough violently to get it to come out. Because of the violent coughing, I develop a big patch of petechiae on my soft palate. But spend the night waking myself up with coughing fits that go on for what feels like minutes. I get about 5 hours of sleep.

December 1st - My symptoms have not dwindled to a relentless cough because the phlegm refuses to come fully up and post nasal drip that leaves me feeling like I'm going to choke to death on mucus. I doze off around 11 for a few hours and wake up disoriented and with a body-wide tingling sensation. Also, I'm having difficulty with what feels like an unending thick post-nasal drip. Due to having survived the last few days only on popsicles and soup, my stomach is demanding solid food. So I ferally rip into a pack of cookies. And the rear-most molar on the right side breaks.

And no dentists within an hour of me are open. So now I have to wait until tomorrow afternoon at the earliest to get this tooth taken care of (because it's too broken for me to pull myself) and hope it doesn't get worse or infected before then.

I'm still heavily in brain fog and want to cry. All I can do is hope it won't cost too much out of pocket to get my tooth dealt with.

This xray is from I think 2018? I've since had that wisdom tooth on the left of the image removed since it (fairly obviously) was causing issues. I just think the image is neat.

I love how you can see my stretched ears so clearly as well as my two nose rings. And I mean, also all the cavities that only got worse over the years.

Also this makes me think of Sims 1 head texture maps and actually now that I think about it I wonder if i could make it into one... 🤔

“I don’t want them to break Matt’s jaw and sew up his face. That’s horrible! He’s only a baby!” Fergus gave Rosalie a haunted look and she nodded sympathetically. “I’m disappointed in Medicine. They’re only interested in fixing people, not making them feel better. There was nothing in all those books on how to care for such a child!”

“I think what you need is a baby-feeding-bottle. We can go and buy one tomorrow!”

“Rosalie, you’re the best! I should have asked you first, instead of visiting the stupid library!” Fergus’ face lit up, but then darkened again. “The other thing I tried to read up about was how to be a good father. That was almost as bad! Some books started out nice, with leading useful conversations and setting a good example. But they all agreed it’s unavoidable to beat your children. I wish Father was still alive. He was a good father and he never beat us.”

“No”, Rosalie said thoughtfully. “He considered it ungentlemanlike to beat girls, and by the time you were born he had mastered other ways of making his authority felt.”

“I wish he was still alive”, Fergus repeated. “I wish he could have met Matthew. He’d have loved him just as much as I do. And I could have asked him for advice. It’s hard to be Head of the Family.”

Rosalie flung her arm round the Head of the Family. “He’d be very proud of you.”
