Cyanide Poison
Tumblr media
Let's start by understanding exactly how cyanide kills you. In simple terms, cyanide prevents cells from using oxygen to make energy molecules.
The cyanide ion, CN-, binds to the iron atom in cytochrome C oxidase in the mitochondria of cells. It acts as an irreversible enzyme inhibitor, preventing cytochrome C oxidase from doing its job, which is to transport electrons to oxygen in the electron transport chain of aerobic cellular respiration. Now unable to use oxygen, the mitochondria can't produce the energy carrier adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Tissues that require this form of energy, such as heart, muscle cells, and nerve cells, quickly expend all their energy and start to die. When a large enough number of critical cells die, you expire as well. Death usually results from respiratory or heart failure.
Immediate aymptoms include headaches, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, lack of coordination, and rapid heart rate. Long exposure symptoms include unconsciousness, convulsions, respiratory failure, coma and death.
A person exposed to cyanide may have cherry-red skin from high oxygen levels, or dark blue coloring, from Prussian blue (iron-binding to the cyanide ion). In addition to this, skin and body fluids may give off an almond odor.
The antidotes for cyanide include sodium nitrite, hydroxocobalamin, and sodium thiosulfate.
A high dose of inhaled cyanide is lethal too quickly for any treatment to take effect, but ingested cyanide or lower doses of inhaled cyanide may be countered by administering antidotes that detoxify cyanide or bind to it. For example, hydroxocobalamin, natural vitamin B12, reacts with cyanide to form cyanocobalamin, which leaves the body in urine.
These antidotes are administrated via injection, or IV infusion.
Cyanide is actually a lot more common than you'd think. It's in pesticides, fumigants, plastics, and electroplating, among other things. However, not all cyanide are so poisonous. Sodium cyanide (NaCN), potassium cyanide (KCN), hydrogen cyanide (HCN), and cyanogen chloride (CNCl) are lethal, but thousands of compounds called nitriles contain the cyanide group, yet aren't as toxic. They still aren't terribly good for you, so I wouldn't go around ingesting other cyanide compounds, but they're not quite as dangerous as the lethal kind.
Thank you for reading, have a lovely day :)

I just realized something. When Lyreth is scared of the idea at being questioned by Nasuada’s interrogators, I don’t think he was scared of being a political prisoner. I think he was scared of dying the same way Sarros did.
“He started to thrash, drumming his heels against the floor. Yellow foam bubbled at the corners of his mouth… his voice dried off into a hoarse croak, and with one final jerk, he fell still.” pg 45
Basically, dying of magical cyanide when being interrogated about the Draumars. Doesn’t sound too appealing.

//thinking about how tweek is more aware of his father's abuse and therefore openly/consciously hates his father more whereas he views his mother as more just passive and complicit, like his father is the one who sparked more fear in him when he was a child
but then a woman will give him a certain doe-eyed look or touch his arm in a certain way, and he's like, "actually i'm now convinced you are my mother in disguise and you're here to get me and now you're inside of me and the only solution is probably to kill myself haha! :')" in a way that he really doesn't get with men
this mostly manifests when interacting with older women or women he views as refined and/or of status, women who hold themselves above in some way, deliberately or otherwise

@babydxhl liked for a starter!
Cold. Crisp. These were words used to describe Mary Dahl, but he found these words better suited to the air, to the cold hard ground, to the city he currently found himself bleeding out in.
Warm. Everflowing. These were words used to describe the blood pouring from his side, but he found these words better suited to Mary Dahl, the woman who had indulged his stupid delusions for so long both in and out of Arkham, and who he had the privilege to call a loved one.
Bitter. Desperate. These were words used to describe Jonathan Crane, but he himself would have used these words to describe the taste on his tongue as he searched for a way out of this mess. He would not die in a back alleyway at the hands of some two-bit assassin. If Ra’as wanted him dead, he’d have to try harder -- and Crane knew that The Demon’s Head could try harder.
Her face flashed in his mind, over and over, and he wondered if she was okay. If she would be okay. He knew where her apartment was, but he hadn’t bothered to visit for too long ever since she had retired from the game. He sent letters, of course, but she was trying her hardest to be better. He couldn’t get in the way.
And here he was, sitting on her sofa as he waited for her to get home, bleeding all over her carpet, indulging in his own selfish need to see her. He had already patched himself up, but he needed this. He needed to see her. Needed it. Needed it. Needed...
Crane’s breath hitched as he heard the door open and for a moment he considered making himself more presentable. He had shed most of his costume apart from the pants and the poncho, the latter being tied around his waist as he had gone to work stitching and bandaging his side up. His long black hair was stained crimson as it fell down into his still bruised face, but it didn’t matter.
She finally entered the room, and Crane could only utter one word.
“...Mary.”
