Chapter 1

It had been about 6 weeks since you had done the first live-stream, at the start, it was mainly about getting comfortable in front of the camera. Sana, being your mentor through this, started off by bringing you onto her stream. With Mina’s permission, Sana proposed the idea of allowing her to guide you through the first live. Mina trusted both of you deeply, she always understood that while this started off as a hobby for extra income it had become a job for Sana. In the same breathe, they would never compromise their relationship or boundaries. Mina expressed she was completely okay with it, she had even extended her offer to join you for this if it made you more comfortable as she often did join Sana in her streams as it brought even more views and money.

Clothing was the first obstacle. The idea of going full frontal made the idea of jumping into a frozen pool more appealing. So to get you to dip your toes in the water, less was more. As for your face, you had found a black lace masquerade eye mask that complimented the dress well. Sana had brought you into her cam room where she prepped you both for the live-stream. She went over all the rules and safewords, reaffirming you could stop the moment you felt uncomfortable or didn't want to do it anymore. She made sure you were familiar and settled in your headspace before beginning, you allowed her to do your hair and makeup a slow guide to calm the nerves. You had agreed to make the live no longer than an hour, so that’s where it would begin, you sat in front of Sana situated between her legs. Positioned perfectly behind the camera was a TV screen-sized monitor where you could see yourselves and the chat, comments rolling in once the camera was turned on. Mina sat in for the live quietly to take control of the live setup so she could immediately shut things off if you gave the signal, she often did this when Sana was soloing her streams.

Although you feared you’d back down the minute the camera turned on once the compliments rolled in, you felt the adrenaline pumping. It was a head rush to see so many gawking and begging to see more of you, it didn't matter who these people were or what they looked like. It was a rush you had never felt before. So there it was, your close friend feeling you up, kissing along your neck as you guided yourself through an orgasm with your legs spread in front of the camera for all her followers to see. The apartment scene hadn’t been as glorious as it was. Luckily for you, a listing had just opened for a building not too far from where you lived. It was an open floor-plan apartment, with big arched windows and exposed brick walls. Two bedrooms, two bathrooms, an air conditioning unit, and hardwood. It was an interior designer's wet dream. The rent was just in your range and it was a second-floor apartment with a small balcony. You had arranged to see the apartment that day and were pleasantly surprised to find you could see the place in the next hour with only a 15-minute commute from Sana’s place. Apartments like these were hard to come by, the fear of not having a backup option ate away at you which is why you still sat at the computer. You slammed the computer deciding to just scout out the building now would be better instead of sitting here

“Well, I am off to see this place, do you want to come with?” You asked Sana as she sipped away at her coffee.

“I’d love to but I promised to take Mina to the farmers market this morning, she’s finishing up as we speak. Call me right after though and we’ll grab lunch together.” She kisses your cheek disappearing back into her bedroom. You hum in agreeance heading towards the door, you feel a familiar nudge at your leg only to find your fur baby. Jiji was your gorgeous white and grey cat that you found on your way home after a particularly terrible shift, she had always been there to get you through the hardest times.

“And you, my little muffin, I will see you later. Mommy’s gonna get us a nice big place for you to run and terrorize all on your own. Get you a nice big tree and the biggest fluffiest bed imaginable.” She purrs pleasantly as if she had a complete understanding of the promises you just made her.

After giving her a shower of kisses, you headed down the street to find the building. It was about 3 blocks over, it was a relief to know you could stay in an area that was still familiar to you. It was a quaint area, well-kept. There was a coffee around the corner you frequently passed on your way to work but never found the time to stop in or bothered to visit when the one closer to you had always just been across the street. You leaned against the brick wall that stopped at your hips

while waiting for the relator. Your ears perked hearing someone come out of the building. As you turned to peak at the stranger, you were met with two familiar but unexpected faces instead.

“Fancy seeing you here, stalking us?” Seungmin was the first one to say something as they came down the stairs.

“Hmm? I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’ve never seen you two before this very moment,” You said as they now stood at the bottom of the stairs. Seungmin and Jeongin were two waiters from the restaurant you worked at. You were always friendly with both of them, but your friendship never went beyond the walls of the restaurant unless it was a particularly rough night and you all went out to the bar down the street for some after-work drinks.

“Are you wait for someone?” Jeongin asked. He always had such a cute that was simultaneously sharp and made him look older than he was. Seungmin on the other hand had a very boyish face, he was cute like a puppy but something in his mannerisms always said that he wasn’t as sweet as he may look.

“Sort of, I’m waiting on a realtor to tour an apartment here.”

“The one on the 2nd floor?” Seungmin asks in a higher pitch than you anticipated.

“Actually, yeah. How’d you know?” You ask as Jeongin mutters a ‘damn’ under his breath.

“We were looking at it ourselves, we wanted to upgrade the living space. It’s incredibly nice though, it’s big, and the rooms are huge too for an apartment like that. Hard to come by.” Seungmin says as he slaps a hand on Jeongin’s shoulder. “You and Sana moving out together?”

“Oh no it's just me! I figured It was time to give her and Mina a space to themselves.” A half lie but truth be told, they did indeed need their own space.

“But it’s a two-bed-” Jeongins question gets interrupted by the realtor announcing himself.

“Hi, so which of you was touring the apartment today?” It is a short, stout man who speaks up his suit was a beige two-piece completed with a white button-down. You raise your hand in response. “Perfect! Follow me then.”

“Well, I’ll see you guys later!” You waive goodbye to them, Seungmin smiles with a waves, and Jeongin does the same with a look of confusion.

You followed the realtor up the stairs to the building entrance where he punched in the code. As you entered, someone from down the hall emerged from their place. He was tall with dark hair, he was wearing black jeans and a white t-shirt, and his hair was pulled into a half ponytail with some strategically placed strands pulled out that perfectly showed off the ear piercings. He had a smock thrown over his shoulder, his eyes met yours as you passed him to the stairs, there was no denying how stunning he was. The stranger offered a wink as he walked out the door. Something in your gut told you that wouldn’t be the last time you saw him.

The tour of the apartment wasn’t very long, the photos online did not do the place justice. There was plenty of sun beaming through the window, the kitchen was painted a deep green that perfectly contrasted with golden wood and white wall accents. The master bedroom had plenty of space, the bathroom had a claw foot tub perfect for decompressing and aftercare pampered baths. You signed for the lease once you had your fill of the place were given notice that you could move in a week from that day.

A week came by faster than you anticipated, you had hired a moving company to move everything for you. Work at the restaurant was slammed, you were covering as many shifts as you could to give you extra cushion to take the following week off to unpack and rest. The next time you had saw Seungmin and Jeongin, you gleefully told them about taking the apartment, and they generously offered to help you with the move-in process. You declined their offer but warmly invited them to your house warming.

Fortunately, there wasn’t a whole lot, Sana had owned most of the furniture so you had free agency to decorate the place as you pleased. Part of the move-out was agreeing to share custody of Jiji, while she was your fur baby, she was also Sana’s. You had agreed on a week-to-week schedule, this was your off week while you prepared the place. In the hunt for the most lavish and aesthetic cat furniture, you bought and assembled a cherry blossom cat tree with a matching pink cat cave for your sweet girl. After a grueling 5 days of unpacking, readjusting, and shifting, you had finally completed the place.

Ordering so many toys, furniture pieces, and equipment for the 2nd room made you feel a little crazy. You prayed none of your new neighbors saw the number of packages that came over the days concealing the assortment of sex toys, lingerie, and camera equipment. Alternatives to Dungeons & Dragons (2024) now that they are going all-in on gacha:

Dungeons & Dragons 5e (previous) + any number of compatible indie produced modules (Obvious Mimic Press is the one I've played)

Pathfinder 2e (basically the same game, tons of adventure available)

DC20 (if you like rules improvements; not a lot of modules available yet)

Shadowdark (if you want to party like it's 1979)

Obviously Daggerheart if you're a Critical Role fan; the setting is familiar and rules easy and you can play a mushroom (or their version of tiefling, dragonborn, etc)

Literally any older version of Dungeons & Dragons that still has playable adventures out there.

Have you REALLY played all the existing DnD campaigns and modules yet? Until you have, you don't need to buy new ones.

Roll20.net has automatic DnD character sheets so you can cancel that DnDBeyond subscription if you use it just for that. It has also recently bought up Demiplane, another similar platform, which is prettier and has many of the games mentioned here.

If you want to get more adventurous with rules and setting but still like fantasy combat and skill lists, there's Runequest (bronze age fantasy for you ancient Mesopotamia nerds), which I have been reading recently.

Other genres:

Pathfinder is working on an update on Starfinder, so you can play DnD-like rules for a space adventure.

Teatime Adventures is aD20 rules game for a cozy rural furry stories about pies and being kind to each other.

Call of Cthulhu for horror (check out Chaosium Inc's Youtube channel for actual plays, love those guys) and Pulp Cthulhu for extra cheese on top; there's even Regency Cthulhu if you want to try balancing a monster hunt with a husband hunt.

This is a deep cut but A Ghastly Affair is a game set in the long 1700s and the character classes are stereotypes of gothic romance fiction, and I know I have followers who are into that shit, available on DriveThruRPG (I can't find their original website anymore so get it while you can).

I have to mention Righteous Blood, Ruthless Blades, a wuxia roleplaying game from Osprey Publishing, considering @minutia-r and I have written 480K of adventuring for it.

Also I must mention Vampire: The Masquerade, which is the game that got me to take on gamemastering for the first time. The Storyteller System they use is still my favourite TTRPG system. Very gritty modern supernatural setting, and the Core Rulebook even has a caveat saying "yeah there's problematic stuff, because problematic stuff is part of the real world, fuck the Nazis though" (paraphrased). Caveat, the Core Rulebook is kind of unintuitive.

All of the above are games that have rules with skill lists and kind of the same logical approach to playing as DnD (broadly speaking).

I would not go directly from DnD to Powered by the Apocalypse games like Candela Obscura, Girl by Moonlight, or Blades in the Dark, because their logic is very different and they are less about rules and more about genre; or rather, the rules define things that the above games leave to role-playing, and very little for anything else.

For example, in Candela Obscura you would do the same roll for punching a person and breaking through a door, and in Girl by Moonlight you have to roll to confess your true feelings. Girl by Moonlight is absolutely perfect for playing a magical girl TV show though. That's what it's for.

Happy Halloween!

The first Halloween they have after the events of Spring Break is the best Eddie had ever had. He’d always loved Halloween with its mystery and secrets, the hidden horror found in the films, and the candy everyone passed out to the kids. He loved watching the kids of the trailer park dress in their second-hand costumes to pretend to be fairies, princesses, and pirates like he too had once before. But before 1986, he’d always been alone. He would smear makeup on his face and run door to door in the early evening before anyone else was out then he’d saunter home and hide from the bullies outside with a lap full of candy and the small TV screen playing a horror flick.

Halloween of 1986 though brought a new opportunity. Eddie could put on a mask and cease to be the boy that everyone in the town despised. He would no longer be a “known” killer that mothers pulled their children away from. He wouldn’t be the idiot that flunked out of high school after three tries. He wouldn’t even be the freak that people sneered insults at. That Halloween night, Eddie was able to just be himself with his friends.

He and Steve weren’t dating at that point, but he could feel they were close. Eddie saw the way his eyes never strayed quite too far away from him and felt how his hands reached for him whenever he turned away. It wasn’t different on Halloween.

Eddie’s face was covered with black and white paint and his hair was let loose on his back, the curls unruly and full. He was masquerading as a member of KISS, the only metal band that Steve could stomach to listen to for any period of time. Above all though, he wasn’t Eddie Munson.

Steve dressed as Ferris Bueller wearing a costume eerily similar to Tina’s Halloween Party several years prior and matched with Robin who went as his best friend Cameron Frye. The kids dressed in random costumes that meant little to Eddie beyond recognition that they were having fun.

The whole Party went door to door in Loch Nora for the full size candy bars then around the Wheeler’s neighborhood for some of what Dustin called, “the cheap shit”. When the night was over and most of the houses were out of candy to pass out, everyone headed back to the Byers’ house for the sleepover of all sleepovers. They carved pumpkins and ate pie, they made pumpkin seeds and cookies, they almost gave Hopper a heart attack when they started a food fight that wrecked the entire dining room (Eddie started it but he’s taking that with him to the grave).

When the kids were too tired and the girls had retreated to bed, Steve led Eddie out to his car where they watched the stars and smoked some cigarettes. They ate all of Dustin’s candy and traded secrets under the gaze of the brightened moon. Eddie’d long forgotten about his face paint up until the point where Steve’s lips met his in a light kiss that shot electricity through his bones. They kissed and hugged until their noses were cold from the chilly weather and they had no choice but to head back inside.

It was the best night of Eddie’s life.

The morning after was not. He woke up with a bruising jolt from Steve’s elbow making contact with his jaw. His stomach hurt from the excessive consumption of sweets and his lungs were tight from the chain smoking. Most of all though, his head hurt from the loud raucous of the kids finding his facepaint all over the lower half of Steve’s face.

He dealt with the outraged confusion of the kids, the stern ‘talking-to’ (more like screaming match) from Hopper for defiling his adopted son, and even the not so subtle looks from Robin and Nancy. Everything was worth it in the end when Steve carefully wiped off the makeup on Eddie’s face with nimble fingers and gentle swipes until all that was left was some slight staining of skin and his lips meeting Steve’s.

Halloween of 1986 was the best of many moments to come. It turns out that for Eddie, ‘86 was his year after all.

I've just finished listening to the audiobook of These Old Shades by Georgette Heyer. I'm not very familiar with historical romance as a genre - I've only ever read one Georgette Heyer before and I can't remember anything about it, so I'm pretty much new to this kind of book - and I have thoughts!

First of all, I enjoyed it. It's absolutely ridiculous - lots of over-the-top villainy and young fops shouting things like, "Ye gads! Turf and thunder!" Also, the narrator of the audiobook employed some wild French accents the likes of which haven't been heard since the tv show 'Allo 'Allo. So, a fun, silly romp.

But there are key aspects of the plot that, if the book was well known on tumblr, would cause uproar! In a universe where media can either be problematic or wholesome with no other options, we just wouldn't know what to do with it. Below the cut I chew over the issues for my own fun, really, but this involves major spoilers, so if you haven't read it and think you might want to, don't read on!

So, in the tumblr approval corner: interestingly, for a book published in 1926, issues of gender identity and presentation are front and centre in These Old Shades. When we first meet the protagonist, he's a 19 year old French boy (I say boy rather than young man - more of that later) called Léon. However, we then come to learn that Léon is in fact Léonie, a girl who has been passing as a boy for several years for practical reasons. But when circumstances change and it becomes necessary for Léonie to present as a girl again in society, she is at first reluctant to do this, and really misses aspects of being a boy. In fact, she insists on wearing her old breeches at times and also insists on being taught to fight with a sword - boy things! Ultimately, Léonie comes to enjoy many things about being a girl and seems quite happy to be one, but near the end of the book she tells her friends that she is both Léon and Léonie. To me, it felt as if Heyer was inspired by those Shakespearian comedies where female characters disguise themselves as men - and that's good inspiration! In an afterword to the book, there's a quote from a letter Heyer sent to a friend in which she says I’ve made my heroine masquerade as a boy for the first few chapters. This, I find, always attracts people. I mean, you're not wrong, Georgette!

But, in the tumblr cancel corner: there's a humdinger of an age and power difference in what becomes a romantic relationship. So, Léon/Léonie is a nineteen year old peasant at the start of the book, but Heyer codes her as even younger than that. She's repeatedly referred to as a child, and Justin "Satanas" Alastair, Duke of Avon, Léonie's employer and eventual husband, typically calls her my infant. He, by the way, is a forty year old duke with huge wealth and power and life experience, and he buys Léonie from her brother! So, not so wholesome then! It would be easy just to say well, it was written and set in times with very different attitudes to these kinds of issues, and to some extent that's true, but actually, Heyer was sufficiently aware that the situation she had set up might be seen as a bit dodgy even in 1926, that she has the characters directly address it in the book. She has the Duke of Avon tell his friends and then Léonie herself that he loves her but can't possibly do anything about that because he's far too old for her and she should have a husband her own age. Heyer then has the friends reassure him, saying that Léonie obviously adores him and he should get over himself. Then Léonie tells him if she can't marry him, she'll never marry anyone. Heyer also does other things in the plot so that by the time they form a romantic relationship, Léonie's no long a peasant. But, whichever way you look at it, a wealthy middle-aged man buys a teenager, employs her as his page for a while, and then marries her. So yeah, if Georgette isn't careful she's going to get very cancelled!

What kept popping into my mind when i was reading it was that meme that goes not now, kitten, Daddy's . . . Basically, the Duke of Avon is written as a man with a wicked past who loves to have power and control over people, but who, for the first time, feels protective and loving (if still very controlling). Their relationship has a vibe of not now, my infant, Daddy's plotting the downfall of a French aristocrat.

I guess I should say that none of this bothers me at all. It's just a book, a rather silly, entertaining book. It's not telling anyone how they should actually live their lives - it's just a work of fiction, and fiction is where we get to try on and explore and play with all kinds of possibilities. And hey, there are plenty of people who might really like being bought and kept by a rich, powerful, handsome duke - and who am I to judge them?!

I wish I could link to the actual post, but I couldn’t find it on her instagram and suspect it might’ve been from a reel that’s no longer available? Apologies for my lack of journalistic integrity TuT And then her cute little mynock masquerade mask is based on this bat mask.

Savtas: Sav’s casual non-robes wear is almost exclusively jumpsuits, for both convenience and comfort, so of COURSE I put her in the successor to Mark Hamill’s gold lamé jumpsuit he wore for that German TV skit in the 80s. I’m in love with it now

Nadia: I just really wanted to put her in something cute with a lean towards 60s retro-futurism! It felt Star Wars-appropriate. Her dress is based on this fantastic little number by Gnyuki Torimaru. I also gave her Dior boots because I saw them on Pinterest & decided they were fantastic. You might also notice she’s changed the design of her face paint to match Sav’s tattoos ^_^

Favorite Movie Costumes (pt. 1)

Recently got the line-up-your-toys urge to list and discuss my favorite tv and movie costumes-- my favorites are many and tumblr's image limit is low, so I'm not sure how many posts this'll eventually spread to, but here's the first crop.

The Queen's red gown - The Brother's Grimm

I don't think anyone on earth wanted to love this movie more than I did when it came out-- sadly, the film itself was generally a letdown. However, its costumes absolutely delivered, which should come as no surprise since they were designed by Gabriella Pescucci. The costumes for Monica Belluci's queen are my favorites of all, but this piece, the one she wears for most of the movie, may be my favorite costume of all time.

The costume has several iterations; it's paired most prominently with her enormous horned headdress (my fave), but she also wears it with a more delicate tiara.

Marianne de Morangias' red riding habit - Brotherhood of the Wolf

Although Brotherhood of the Wolf is far from a good movie, I have a terrible soft spot for it, which is mostly due to its wonderful costumes, including a crowd of hunting costumes throughout, none more gorgeous than the one Marianne's debuts during the film's first hunt.

I probably owe my love of riding habits to American Girl's Felicity and her swoon-worthy green velvet habit-- they are sadly underused in movies (meanwhile Marianne not only wears this red habit, but also shows off an equally beautiful green one later.)

Christine Daae's masquerade dress - The Phantom of the Opera

Fun fact, I watched this movie as a teenager (after falling in with the inescapable junior high theater nerd crowd, who tried unsuccessfully to use this as a gateway drug to getting me hooked on musicals), then forgot about the vast majority of the costumes, and stumbled upon it again years later without realizing it was from a movie and completely fell in love with it.

I'm very fond of the early 1870s silhouette in general, long trains in particular, and the back of this one is what really sold me. The frothy layers of chiffon?? the flowers?? the graceful tiered bustle?? Obsessed. (Another fun fact, this is one of the references I always bring up when discussing potential wedding dresses.)

Imogen Spurnrose's red ensemble - Carnival Row

I know, another red velvet number ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Imogen's wardrobe is full of lovely quasi-Victorian pieces, but this one had me GASPING when it came on screen. These pictures do not do the color or vibrancy of that jacket justice!

Geilis Duncan's white ballgown - Outlander

I'm usually not a fan of stripped down historical styles, especially ones this anachronistic, but something about the minimalist design of this dress just charmed me.

It reminds of in some way of artistic undress in 17th century portraits, and the lightness of the colors and material has this clean, airy, almost White Lady quality to it, and the simplicity and limited accessorizing really brings out the period silhouette. (Also I adore lover's eyes).

Vanessa Ives' lace blouse - Penny Dreadful

Vanessa has a gorgeous wardrobe (Gabriella Pescucci hitting it out of the park again) containing a number of delicate black and white blouses, but this one is my favorite.

The design is not that complex, but the wealth of tiny details, especially the petal shaped blackworked collar and cuffs, give it a huge visual punch; paired with the decorative belt and beautiful black skirt it's a very unique look that shows off some of the most beautiful elements of the period (last photo courtesy @periodcostumefantasylover)

Lorna's church dress - Lorna Doone

YES another red number. And what a red!! This miniseries is so obscure I had to do my own (butt ugly) screencaps off Youtube, but despite being a fairly modest production, they do some nice 17th century looks in it.

This dress is glimpsed for a moment as Lorna catches sight of her separated lover through the crowd-- very dramatic, but unfortunately it means getting a good look at the beautiful dress is hard, but I did my best: here's the actual scene, if you want a better look (and I'd recommend the series, too!)

Virginia Wilson's Worth dress - 1899

Big shock, the replica House of Worth dress made it in *Oprah shrug* I've adored the original dress for years, so I went nuts seeing it on the show! On top of just top tier everything, the costuming on 1899 was great, and the fact that they decided to throw this dress in was just the cherry on top.

There are some minimal differences between this dress and its inspiration, most notably the change in pattern-- Virginia's dress not only incorporates the alchemical logo like all the rest of the characters, but the rounded edges in the original are all made jagged to match it, as you can really see in the last photo.
